Become is not your average YA paranormal. We're thrown into an intense novel about the battle between angels and demons. Lucifer's daughter, Desolation, is our protagonist and against her wishes, she's being sent back to earth Where there are teenagers and people with… feelings.
Desolation has a really unique personality. Being the devil's daughter she's very cautious, socially awkward and a bit of a loner. She doesn't want to fall in her father's footsteps. In fact, she doesn't really like him all that much. She also senses that there's something very different about her; As though she doesn't belong in Hell. I had a lot of fun with Desolation. She is very critical of herself, but you can tell that underneath it all she's a great person who is just trying to figure out where she fits in.
I really enjoyed the style of writing throughout the novel. It's very descriptive and sophisticated; I found it highly intense, and with a lot more depth than most. There are strong messages sent throughout the story about finding oneself and, most importantly, good vs evil. The intensity was a bit of a problem when it came to the theology and the myths behind the angel/demon battles. I found myself getting confused during the explanations. My only knowledge of it comes from the show Supernatural, so the elaborate lore were a bit overwhelming. I had to reread a lot of passages to get the gist. For this reason, I couldn't entirely get caught up in the story as much as I had hoped.
Despite the complexity, I still enjoyed the plot. Like i mentioned, it was very intense with a lot of action and battle sequences. I did like getting to know why Desolation was seemingly different from the others. The romance also played a big part in the story which did alleviate the seriousness throughout the book.
As an angel/demon book, don't expect this to be like the popular YA novels such as Hush Hush or Fallen. Become goes right to the core of Norse mythology: Asgard, Loki (Lucifer), Odin, Thor. But even if, like me, you don't know a lot about these myths, it's still a fun read, however I think people versed in it would absolutely enjoy it to it's full potential.

Not just the average YA novel with angels and demons, we're talking the devil's daughter here. A phenomenal story of a girl who should, by all accounts, be a bad girl, but wants so desperately to be good. The story of Desolation Black and her trials as a normal teen, while trying to please her father (AKA: Satan) not only kept me on the edge of my seat, but left me questioning how I see the world. If a girl with such darkness in her life, can find a way to do good, then there's hope for the rest of us.
Even if you're not a fan of dark paranormal novels, you'll love this one. It's not like all the others. Not even close.

I am finally get a chance to write the review for BECOME and will be posting it soon. Suffice it to say that I LOVED the book. Ali Cross weaves a fantastic tale, steeped in Mythology. She brings a bad-ass main character to life in a fresh and exciting way. This is definitely NOT your typical angel/demon story. And the boys...oooohhhhh the boys!!! A great read.

I really liked this first installment in the Desolation series. Desolation Black, Satan's daughter, comes to earth and enrolls in a local school. She makes friends with Mera (a human) and Michael (an angel). There's lots of hijinx and angels and demons in the story. And at the end, Desolation has to make an agonizing decision. Fun story and I love the references to all the Norse gods and Asgard/Ragnarok.

I looked at the cover of this book and thought, "Pleasepleaseplease, let this book be as good as it looks on the cover." The cover is so telling. You see beauty, power, sadness, heartache and desperation. You look closer still and you see light mixed with darkness, fierceness mixed with frailty, Heaven mixed with Hell. Like I said, telling - because this is what you'll find in the story as well.
The story is about and told by Desolation Black, daughter of Lucifer. Desolation, or Desi, as she prefers, is a girl who is bound to a destiny dictated by her parentage. A destiny she loathes. Knowing full well who her father is and what his expectations are, she puts up as much resistance as she dares, as she is groomed and trained by her father's most-trusted ally, Akaros. What is she resisting exactly and why? Lucifer and Akaros push Desi to embrace her inner demon and Become, so that she can be used as a instrument to further her father's agenda and bring more souls to Hell. But, Desi finds herself at odds with this. She's resistant and she can't explain why. Why does she care what happens to humans? Why does her conscience bother her?
Life in Hell is cold and lonely, but Desi much prefers it to life on Earth. She had a brief stint on Earth that left her shaken and more damaged than anything she's experienced in Hell. She won't be going back there if she can help it. But thinking she has any choice in the matter is a fantasy. Before she knows what hit her, she finds herself being sent right back. The only thing she may have to look forward to, is the possibility of seeing someone who showed her kindness last time. Other than that, another visit to Earth can only mean pain, sorrow and a massive amount of guilt.......and that's no less than she deserves, if you ask her.
Desi takes up residence, again, with her father's minion, Daniel, and his oh-so-sexy and mysterious son, James. Desi and James have a little thing I like to call C-H-E-M-I-S-T-R-Y. Whew! But, Desi is intuitive and knows she can't and shouldn't trust James, no matter what effect he has on her. He is his father's son, after all. I'll confess right now that James is my favorite character in the book. I found him intriguing. And no, it's not because he's smokin'! He's complex, with some unexplored depth, fighting some of his own figurative demons. James is a definite presence in the book, but I would've liked to have spent a little more time with him, figure out what really makes him tick. There are some GREAT scenes between Desi and James too, ones that will melt your heart. She's also having dreams about another guy, someone she's never met. So why does he feel so familiar?
Ali Cross has a talent for phrasing and description. I found myself sucked in from page one because of lines like this, where Desi is describing her dread and anticipation of seeing James again: "The part where I'd have to see James, and act like his smile didn't feel like a stake through my heart. Or how I'd drive it through my heart myself if only he'd kiss me again." Wow, nailed it! How do I know? Been there. Haven't most of us?? Desi's voice is simple, sarcastic and carries attitude. My kinda girl!
Desi not only finds herself surrounded by the depravity and sin she knows to expect from this world, but also by the best of what humanity has to offer; love and forgiveness. Despite everything she struggles with - her father, Akaros, Daniel, James, Michael, her inner demon, her past, her future - the toughest battle is with herself. Discovering that she is MORE than her father has led on and that she can CHOOSE her own path in life, upsets everything she thought she knew.
A testament to her creativity, the author uses an intricate interfusion of several belief systems (that I could pick out) that work together to support her story and the plight of her characters. She's blended Norse Mythology and Catholicism along with other modern Christian beliefs. My knowledge of mythology is pretty minimal, but I easily kept up. Those of you who are a little more scholarly will probably be able to draw more lines than I was able to. I thought it worked really well together and made the story interesting.
This story is about choice and exercising our free will. Although Desi is Satan's daughter, she's faced with the same conflict humans face on a daily basis. Do we use our power, influence and gifts for good or for evil? That, like the rest of us, she is not entirely bad and not entirely good. It's a decision to made every second of every day.

10 Things I loved about this book:
1) I know I always say this - but hey I don't read books much if the cover doesn't grab me. It's what I look at first. This cover is awesome. That is a big compliment coming from me b/c my friends will tell you I am picky. I love that it is a badass angel figure. I love the purple and grey. And I love sacrificial undertones. I am actually jealous this is not my cover.
2) Desi is a badass. She is so true to a teen and jumps off the page. She is flawed and I love that she's not perfect and doesn't pretend to be. She's actually okay with not being perfect. Who doesn't need a little of that?
3) Michael is yummy. Yummier than what your yummiest yummy is. That's all I'll say about that! Oh yeah and there was tons of kissing. :)
4)The book pulls you through - if it's not through external plot racing moments, then its from the internal conflict that is - at times- heart breaking.
5) The relation to real life. The relationship between Desi and her father can be translated in any teen's world. Overbearing father, wants her to be something she isn't. Has expectations of her that she doesn't have of herself. And while yes - he is the devil - he still seems real to me in a way. Even shows a slight vulnerable side in that he loves his daughter.
6)It is a nice twist on the angel/demon battling books. Not only is the key relationship between father and daughter (I seem to see mom issues more but maybe that's just me) and she just happens to be the devil's daughter. Uh... awkward and can you imagine the pressure she's under? Slightly intimidating.
7)There seems to be a underlying mix of Norse mythology and modern Christian theology. So it makes you think about how you really see the world around you. I like books that make you think.
Even her secondary characters stand out and jump off the page. I already mentioned Michael, but Lucy intrigued me as well.
Ali's writing is layered and descriptive. Sometimes extremely intense and a bit shocking.
Lastly, I love that this book is self published. I think Ali did a great job and has put out a high quality book. And she did it all herself, which is hard and amazing.
So - go get this book! It debuts on 11/11/11 and I'm glad I got a sneak peak!

Become (Desolation #1) by Ali Cross is one of the reasons I love books by Indie Authors. It is edgy and risky. The main character Desolation Black (Desi) is the devil’s daughter. Literally. But, she is more than that. And her struggle with the “more than that” is the gist of the story in this first book of the Desolation series.
I love the themes of Become. Traditional stories have clear-cut lines between good and evil. More and more writers are addressing the truth that that good and evil exists within each of us. What Cross has done is created a character and world that makes all this huge.
The other great thing Cross does in Become is show the challenges that the flawed can face when embracing the good. It is probably a quiet struggle for many that Cross puts front and center through her main character, Desi.
The writing is solid and the supporting cast is varied. My favorite is Desi’s friend, Miri. I would have liked Miri to get a little more play in the book’s final pages, but hopefully we’ll see more of her in future installments.
The world building was the only thing that put me off in the beginning. The dominant mythology in Cross’s world is Nordic--Loki, Odin, Valkyries, etc. That pantheon works well as the story progresses. However in the beginning, introducing the devil as kind of Lucifer/Loki combo kind of had me going...which one? It felt confusing.
The end was very strong, although I expect it will leave some readers disappointed. This is a great read if you have ever pondered the bigger questions of light and dark, or--if you’ve ever had any “daddy” issues;)

I am so happy I finally decided to read Become. The copy I bought from an auction was signed so it stayed on my shelf for a long time until I finally decided to deal and read. Yes I am one of those who don't like reading signed copies. But wow was I completely taken by surprise.
Of course you already know that Become deals with demons and angels, Desi being the daughter of Lucifer. But what you don't know until you get into the story is the use of Norse mythology. I have never read another book that used Odin, Asgard as Heaven, Midgard as Earth, and that Loki was Lucifer. Definitely a new twist that brought a lot more excitement into this unique world.
There really isn't much else to say without ruining the entire book. I can say that Desi was one kickass heroine. Even though she was the daughter of darkness she always strived to be better. There were plenty of hard choices throughout the book but Desi faced everything with nothing but absolute determination and strength, especially in the end. Even if one doesn't entirely enjoy paranormal books you can't miss out on the story of Desi, the life she was given, and the path she has chosen.

If you liked reading The Space Between then you will probably like reading this book. To me it had a similar vibe of sadness/otherness and trying to figure out if you could love even if you were not designed to do so, that I enjoyed in the other book.
The main character, Desolation, is the daughter of Lucifer and she likes Hell because it is comfortable/predictable. She really has nothing to fear there, nothing that really complicates her life. Oh she has her duties as Lucifer's daughter, but she since she has a fear and dislike of Earth, Hell is, in a sense, a place where she can be at peace even though she always has this doubt that she doesn't really belong there. She feels like there's this little part of her that is warmth, warmth that she isn't supposed to have. Why does she even have this bit of warmth in her? She knows she's Lucifer's daughter, so what can she possibly do about this warmth? Can you really fight against your nature?
A quote that explains well her fear and dislike of Earth is this:
Desolation has been on Earth before, which is why she fears it and dislikes it. Not because she hates people and their emotions of love and other things, but because she knows that she is supposed to be bad, but there is a warmth in her that she shouldn't have. She feels connected to people and she shouldn't care about them at all. I like her constant struggle between her emotions and her thoughts. They don't correlate and they are supposed to. They should correlate because of who she is. She is Lucifer's daughter. She should only embrace darkness, only think darkness, but it doesn't happen this way for her.
If your emotions and thoughts don't correlate, then they say separating mind and emotions are what you should do, but this is hard to do and not many can do it. It's like when you go to war. You might support the reason for the war, but you are not good at hurting other people without feeling remorse. So what do you do then? Separate mind and heart, so you can do what you have to do. And this is what Desolation struggles with. She can't really do this and she "needs" to because she is Lucifer's daughter and her heart should be completely centered on darkness. At the same time though, she really doesn't want to be like her father, but she fears that she isn't good enough. That the warmth she carries is minuscule and isn't enough not to hurt people. It isn't enough to love people properly, to do what is right.
Her back and forth internal struggle is one of my favorite aspects of the book. I also like that even though this has romance in it, an emphasis was placed on the power and beauty of friendship. Desolation is not supposed to want or need friends, but she does and the portrayal of the friendships she has with Miri and with Lucy are well done. They felt real to me. And they were also good in showing the pain she goes through because of her internal struggle.
A quote that I think describes the type of friendships she formed with some of the characters of the book is this:
The reason I only gave this book 3 stars though was that I felt the first half of the book was way more interesting than the second half. I love angels and demons, but for some reason they weren't that interesting to me in this book. Well I think it was more like, since I really enjoyed the internal struggle that was the first part of the book, the second half which was mostly about preparing for battle and fighting, wasn't that great to me. I didn't really care. I mean, she's going through this all this depressing internal stuff and then it's like "Well now that Desolation is starting to accept herself for who she is, let's throw a lot more of this supernatural stuff and let's make this about some epic battle that needs to be fought or else very terrible things will happen." Didn't really work for me.
I did enjoy though that during this half of the book we got to learn more about the angels and demons involved in this battle. We got to learn more about Norse mythology, which was interesting to me since I wasn't too familiar with it.

The main character, Desolation, is the daughter of Lucifer and she likes Hell because it is comfortable/predictable. She really has nothing to fear there, nothing that really complicates her life. Oh she has her duties as Lucifer's daughter, but she since she has a fear and dislike of Earth, Hell is, in a sense, a place where she can be at peace even though she always has this doubt that she doesn't really belong there. She feels like there's this little part of her that is warmth, warmth that she isn't supposed to have. Why does she even have this bit of warmth in her? She knows she's Lucifer's daughter, so what can she possibly do about this warmth? Can you really fight against your nature?
A quote that explains well her fear and dislike of Earth is this:
"When he turns back, the look on his face is like a fist to my gut. The loss and betrayal in his eyes belongs to me—I’d put them there. And the crushing knowledge that I can inflict pain without even trying wracks my body with shame."
Desolation has been on Earth before, which is why she fears it and dislikes it. Not because she hates people and their emotions of love and other things, but because she knows that she is supposed to be bad, but there is a warmth in her that she shouldn't have. She feels connected to people and she shouldn't care about them at all. I like her constant struggle between her emotions and her thoughts. They don't correlate and they are supposed to. They should correlate because of who she is. She is Lucifer's daughter. She should only embrace darkness, only think darkness, but it doesn't happen this way for her.
If your emotions and thoughts don't correlate, then they say separating mind and emotions are what you should do, but this is hard to do and not many can do it. It's like when you go to war. You might support the reason for the war, but you are not good at hurting other people without feeling remorse. So what do you do then? Separate mind and heart, so you can do what you have to do. And this is what Desolation struggles with. She can't really do this and she "needs" to because she is Lucifer's daughter and her heart should be completely centered on darkness. At the same time though, she really doesn't want to be like her father, but she fears that she isn't good enough. That the warmth she carries is minuscule and isn't enough not to hurt people. It isn't enough to love people properly, to do what is right.
Her back and forth internal struggle is one of my favorite aspects of the book. I also like that even though this has romance in it, an emphasis was placed on the power and beauty of friendship. Desolation is not supposed to want or need friends, but she does and the portrayal of the friendships she has with Miri and with Lucy are well done. They felt real to me. And they were also good in showing the pain she goes through because of her internal struggle.
A quote that I think describes the type of friendships she formed with some of the characters of the book is this:
"So brave. So foolish. Miri smiled and it was like the sun shone on her face—even though she was just a girl, a broken girl caught up in a living, breathing, horror story. I looked at these people, none of whom I really understood, and they certainly didn’t understand me. And yet I felt surrounded by the one need I’d never expected to feel for myself. The one need the selfish never knew was the one you couldn’t take but could only give. Love."
The reason I only gave this book 3 stars though was that I felt the first half of the book was way more interesting than the second half. I love angels and demons, but for some reason they weren't that interesting to me in this book. Well I think it was more like, since I really enjoyed the internal struggle that was the first part of the book, the second half which was mostly about preparing for battle and fighting, wasn't that great to me. I didn't really care. I mean, she's going through this all this depressing internal stuff and then it's like "Well now that Desolation is starting to accept herself for who she is, let's throw a lot more of this supernatural stuff and let's make this about some epic battle that needs to be fought or else very terrible things will happen." Didn't really work for me.
I did enjoy though that during this half of the book we got to learn more about the angels and demons involved in this battle. We got to learn more about Norse mythology, which was interesting to me since I wasn't too familiar with it.

In the beginning of this book, you are told the story of when Desolation aka Desi, is born and that her father, Loki or Lucifer came to collect her. Although she is Lucifer’s biological daughter, her mother is not a demon. Being raised in Hell and surrounded by demons her whole life, that is what Desi associates herself with, even though she hides her “spark” from her father and Akaros, her trainer. She thinks that having this “spark” is a weakness.
Desi is given the job of going up to Earth by her father. Being that this came from her father, she knows that she cannot refute it. She is not looking forward to going to Earth, or Midgard. She doesn’t understand why she is being sent. The last time she went to the human realm was eight months ago and she still has regrets from that experience. Once she is there, she is staying with the Masons, Daniel and James and attending St. Marys Academy. It is not too soon after Desolation arrives at Casa del Diablo, she learns what her father wants of her.
At St. Mary Academy, she meets Miri, who turns out to be a true friend. The only other friend Desi has had was Lucy, so she is not entirely comfortable with the experience. She also meets Michael, and gets a feeling that she knows him from somewhere. It is during her experience there and through the help of Miri, Michael and a group known as “The Hallowed” that Desi finds out who she is and what her destiny is.
This book blew me away. I loved the writing in it. It was deeper than most YA novels that I read. Not that it was like a chemistry textbook, but it was interesting to see more depth in the characters and storyline. Cross draws you in by the way that she describes things. There were some parts in the book that I am sure that I missed and will require additional readings to fully understand them, but this does not take away from the book.
I Like:
▪Desolation. I love her personality. The fact that she was raised by demons in Hell and she still has a “spark,” as she calls it, is amazing. She is truly an unforgettable person. The journey of discovery that Desi goes through is paramount to the plot of the book, and yet it is not always your main focus.
▪Lucy. Her part in this book is short, but it is essential to the progression that Desi experiences. She is one of the first people to show Desi what being loved means.
▪Miri. At first, I’m unsure about this character, but she turns around and in the end is a good friend for Desi. She helps her get through a lot of things which never would’ve been possible.
▪Michael. Of course you have to love the cute boy in the story. You find out that he is more than just a pretty face (and a warm touch) in this book. I am curious to see what his character will do when the second book, Desolation, comes out.
▪James. Even though he is kind of sleazy at the beginning of the book, he has a good heart and eventually that wins out.
▪The Cover. (I haven’t really discussed covers much in my reviews and I plan on rectifying that.) On this cover, you see Desi with wings in the background. You don’t get a full understanding of the cover until after you have read it, but I love how you get a sense of Desi even before opening the book.
▪The mythology that is thrown into the book. I have always had an interest in mythology and love that more books are incorporating the themes that I know into their stories.
▪The battle between good and evil. This has been a common theme in books since the beginning of time. The way that it is described in Become is different than anything I have read in this genre. This is a young adult book, but it will be enjoyed by older adults as well. This is a topic that demands seriousness and Become has a good balance of being serious, romance and friendship.
▪Odin. I love that he is portrayed as a Father figure in this story. It just makes you all warm and fuzzy.

Can you believe it? An angel-type book that I didn’t immediately want to depose of after I finished it, amazing! It’s such a rare occurrence I feared I’d never find another one again, but here it is. It’s only a 3 star but that’s far better than most angel books fair in my hands…There was some issues I had with it, but overall I found it to be a satisfying read.
The plot itself is pretty unique when it comes to the lore used, because not only does it use Christianity but it pulls in a huge amount of Norse mythology. When I saw the name Loki pop up on the first page my heart soared and I kind of hugged the book…no joke. I have a huge love and appreciation for the old religions, so to see them in any novel makes me super happy. So basically the major canon from both religions are present. You have Odin/God, Loki/Lucifer, Helheimer/Hell, Valhalla/Heaven and so on and so forth. I think the mix of the two is kind of brilliant. The plot revolving around Desi is one that is a bit confusing at times due to the limited amount of information you are feed as the story progresses, but I will say I didn’t quite get the point of her being on Earth. I saw the point because it’s explained but I personally didn’t see why that route had to be taken when another route probably would have worked out better. I also liked the whole Remembering thing in regards to leaving and entering Hell. Basically you are forced to remember the deeds of your life, and I can imagine that for some that would be a horrifying experience.
Desolation or Desi, as she prefers to be called, is a strong-willed girl who is in constant battle with herself. She confused on who she is and even though she knows her destiny she doesn’t want it to come true. At times she’s the perfect contradiction to herself. She’s such a powerful girl both physically and mentally, but she doubts herself constantly and in a way makes herself seem less than what she is. I liked the fact that when it came down to it she could hold her own but her overwhelming self-loathing really brought it down for me. She also can get pretty arrogant at times, which fits but it was a bit eye-roll worthy. Miri is a great character and she reminds me of a certain prophet on Supernatural, she has her issues and her role in the whole story doesn’t really help but she comes through with some help. She’s likeable but I wish there were more interaction between her and Desi, more conversations or bonding experiences. Something to really back up the connection they have. Micheal is probably my least favorite character, and that’s simply because I was confused when it came to his part. Everything is explained over time and the holes are plugged but my impression of him didn’t really change.
Overall it’s a good novel and I plan on reading the second book Desolation when I get the chance.

The other reviews I've read have labeled this book a paranormal romance. Now that they mention it, I can see that, but as I was reading it, paranormal was not the description that came to mind.
This is a story about good and evil. It's a mix of Norse mythology and modern Christian theology.
It's heart-breaking, gut-wrenching, but most of all it's hopeful. I fell in love with this book because of the themes presented. First, as stated above, it's a book about hope and redemption. The second theme goes hand-in-hand with the first. We have a destiny, but only if we CHOOSE it. It's all about our choices and even in the depths of, well, desolation (which is the name of the main character. She is the devil's daughter after all), we can choose to, not just overcome, but BECOME! And the third strong theme is about the strength of love. It is the reason we can have hope, redemption and choice.
But seeing as it is a battle between good and evil, I admit that some of the scenes made me uncomfortable. They were TOO intense. The reason I didn't give this book 5 stars has nothing to do with the author's beautiful writing or her complex characters, but my own sensibilities. She uses strong images in the beginning to show you the world Desolation lives in, also making it clear how much she hates it. She's surrounded by Sin (as you can imagine considering who her father is...) This makes her choices to Become something all the more radiant. The light always shines brightest in utter darkness... but the swearing and the innuendo were too much for me.
However, I do intend to read book 2 because I'm completely hooked. It's an incredible story! I would just advise that adults read it before you decide to let your kids read it.

Wow. Just wow. Ali Cross has created an elaborate world blended from fable and reality with engaging characters that not only stole my heart, but left me wanting more.
Desolation Black is hell spawn and I mean literally as in Lucifer’s daughter. She plays the part as minimally as possible. She tries to appease her father’s wishes, all but one. No matter how hard he tries to push her to Become, she refuses. That tiny sliver of humanity she holds on to for dear life, the spark within her, means too much to her for her to embrace her demon side.
With her father growing increasingly impatient with his heir, he forces her out of the safety of Hell and into the unknown of Earth. This place of feeling and remembering scares Desi more than any part of Hell ever could. But her father always gets his way, assuring her it’s for her own good that she will learn to be a better demon among the human sinners.
It is not the sinners or the darkness her father’s pawns that scares her the most. It is the one boy that could be her greatest downfall and the girl that needs a friend more than she needs one of her own. Because once she Becomes, how will she be able to save all she loves when she will be their greatest danger?
Become is a wonderfully heartbreaking and captivating story. It will pull at your heartstrings and have you cheering the characters on to the very end. I am madly in love this series and Ms. Cross’s style of writing. I can’t wait to start Desolate and continue their quest.

I first decided to read this novel because I loved the premise and the cover. Something wickedly dark about all of it. I wanted to know more.
Plus, the author, Ali Cross, runs a fantastic blog that I enjoy checking out and I love supporting new authors. So I thought, "Give it a try. What could it hurt?"
I'll tell you, it only hurt my soul that I didn't read it the moment I downloaded it. Yes, this book is that good.
Desi Black is no joke. I suppose that comes from being raised the daughter of the devil, heiress to Hell. She's a wonderfully written character easily identifiable with teen girls who don't seem to fit in anywhere. The romantic interactions were nothing to laugh at. Tension so thick, scenes so descriptive, it grabbed me and never let go.
Become was so wonderful. I can't wait for the next installment to come out.

Couldn't put it down! I wouldn't think I'd like a book where the main character is Satan's daughter. But I did. It's an incredible tale of love and hope.
The characters are well developed. Lucy will step from the pages to hug you. You'll want to jump in to do the same for Miri. Michael seems like a flat character until his true nature is revealed then wow--great choice for a hero. And Desi pulls you through sorrow, love, fear, despair, revulsion, apathy and hope. Most of all hope! Several others take up space in your heart as well and stay with you long after you close the cover on this book.

Ali Cross is an immensely talented writer. Her characters are rich and layered - my favorite was Lucy, who simply jumped off the page. I wanted her to be my best friend! BECOME provides a clean romance and an intriguing storyline, with a protagonist who is equally complex. The moral ambiguity of her main character provides a satisfying tale of personal growth. Ali's writing is simple yet effective, without any overly-flowery descriptions, and she conveys emotion well through both exposition and dialogue. I adored BECOME and I recommend it for anyone who enjoys good YA paranormal fiction.

So I have started reading some books on my TBR list, and I am glad this was one of them. This author is new to me but I loved this book. Desolation is a good character, I enjoy her humor and how she views hell and her father. This book was capturing from the beginning. I think the relationship between Desolation and Michael is a beautiful romance. As I read this book I could see this great movie being created. This one is another great movie idea. I think good vs evil always sells and this is a new take on everything. I enjoyed it and look forward to book 2.

Wow! Become is not a normal book, not a normal YA book, and after I finished reading it I understood that it's much more complex and much more obscure than others of this genre.
The story talks about Desolation Black, a girl who's name is not the only weird thing in her life. She is Lucifer's daughter. She lives in Hell surrounded by solitude, but at least her life is better than when she is on Earth. Yes, she have been to Earth and it was awful. But now, she needs to come back and face all those things that she wants to forget. Will she be able to do it? Will she find love and friendship, or will she follow her father's steps? Decisions, decisions… too many decisions!!
This book, like I said before, it's dark! really dark! The main character, Desolation (or Desi) is the Devil's daughter, so it's logic that her life is surrounded by sin, lust, and desolation. So, at the moment I started reading I was a little bit shocked for some scenes and some topics. They were too crude for me, too dark and too heart-breaking. But I forgot everything when the story caught my attention, and I couldn't stop reading until I finished. The plot is really well done, and the characters are really nice, Desi is a main character like no other, too dark, too sad, but really strong and in need of love. I loved Lucy, she is warm and lovely and I hated the all the things that happened to her (You need to read the book to understand) and for a moment I was angry to the author for doing -that-, but well, it was necessary to the plot and I was happy to see Desi with Miri, another lovely character that I really liked and… Michael. *sigh* He is awesome!!!
So, what can I say? I consider this book not just a paranormal romance book. I think that it's much more than that. This book talks about decisions and how those decisions can affect the life of more than one person. It also shows how dark and destructive can be the world when you're in bad company or when you're doing wrong. Become is a good book that teaches you the difference between right and wrong. That's why I highly recommend it!

So, at the moment I started reading I was a little bit shocked for some scenes and some topics. They were too crude for me, too dark and too heart-breaking. But I forgot everything when the story caught my attention, and I couldn't stop reading until I finished. The plot is really well done, and the characters are really nice, Desi is a main character like no other, too dark, too sad, but really strong and in need of love. I loved Lucy, she is warm and lovely and I hated the all the things that happened to her (You need to read the book to understand) and for a moment I was angry to the author for doing -that-, but well, it was necessary to the plot and I was happy to see Desi with Miri, another lovely character that I really liked and… Michael. *sigh* He is awesome!!!
So, what can I say? I consider this book not just a paranormal romance book. I think that it's much more than that. This book talks about decisions and how those decisions can affect the life of more than one person. It also shows how dark and destructive can be the world when you're in bad company or when you're doing wrong. Become is a good book that teaches you the difference between right and wrong. That's why I highly recommend it!

I thought this was a great read, and I will definitely hurry along and pick up the next book in the series. I have to say I'm not hugely into angels and the teachings of the Bible, and this book obviously has a fair bit to do with both. Well, the Bible stuff isn't really that obvious but there's just a lot about sin and all that. I really do hate the idea that people who really don't do things that are all that bad (i.e. being alcoholic - yes, it's bad but it's not like it's murder or something) are candidates for a life in Hell. But that is really MOSTLY beside the point, and despite my aversion to all things Christianity-related when it comes to fiction, I was able to immensely enjoy this book. Particularly as it wasn't just Christianity but Norse myth as well that came into it. I do enjoy a bit of myth. ;)
The story moved nice and quickly, and there was action around every corner. Desi is a kick-arse character and I definitely could envision breathtaking action scenes from a movie version of the story. I loved Michael and thought he was pretty hawt, all things considered. *waggle* And the supporting characters - Desi's version of the "Scooby-gang" as she referred to them - were cool to read about as well. I did think it was a bit funny that Buffy was referenced in a few places. The idea of Satan's daughter being pretty familiar with that TV series amused me and to be honest when I read it I actually went, "HUH?" And remembered that a while back I started re-watching Buffy and now wish that I was still re-watching it, instead of being stuck in a room with an invalid cat most of my home life. ;)
Anyway, I would definitely recommend this book if you like kick-arse action with a fantasy/paranormal/whatever slant, and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

Become brings an interesting twist to the angels and demons plot. It weaves elements of Norsk mythology and kick-butt action for a creative new paranormal series.
Unfortunately, I didn't like the main character very much. Desolation "Desi" Black is the daughter of Lucifer a.k.a. Loki. She is sent to earth on a mission to retrieve Miri, an alcoholic who has visions of the future. But she doesn't really embody despair and pain; she's very introverted, insecure, and secretly good-hearted -- although she denies it in the beginning. She's very emo, and has a hard time fighting her inner demons. She struggles to become her own person and not a pawn in her father's evil plan.
I liked Lucy's kind and loving character, even though her life was short-lived. I also adored James and Michael. Of course, at first I thought James was a sexy villain bent on seducing Desi but when I realized his true nature and saw how much he cared about Desi and Miri, I ended up liking him. And who wouldn't fall for Michael's charm? He also happens to be an angel. Oh, and I liked Miri's innocence and loyalty. She was a good friend and the perfect girl for James.
All in all, it was a good book. I got really excited towards the end, starting for chapter 20. The fight scenes lagged a bit but it was well described. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the series.

Extremely engaging, powerful fantasy adventure focused on the struggle between light and dark. Desi is surrounded by evil, a child of Satan and a human, yet she refuses to give into the temptation to "become" - which means to embrace all of her dark powers. Sent to Earth by her father, she makes some unexpected friends, has visions of a past she didn't know she had, and discovers how to release the secret spark of light inside herself.
Out of all the books I read over the Christmas season, Become by Ali Cross was the finest crafted novel. Tightly woven, intense, and packed with meaning, I was drawn into this story immediately and read it in one sitting. However, it is dark fantasy, and I had to wrestle with that a bit in my head. I really enjoyed it, but I struggled with some of the intense moments, and it made me realize that I have a tendency to bury my head in the face of some the world's sinful and ugly realities. The dark stuff in the novel is based on real life, ugly stuff that is in our world this very moment. We can't all be kickin' superheroes like Desi but we can make a difference if we take the time to pay attention to the hurting world around us.

I generally steer away from fantasy because half of it is absolutely incredible, and the other half feels more like a description of powers and a new world more than the journey of the character - but I LOVED this book.
This was all about Desi's journey. Sad, crushing, hopeful, torn. All of it was amazing. When I wasn't reading it, I was thinking about it. I felt like I was truly part of her journey.
OH - and there was lots of good kissing, too.
Ali Cross writes action so well, and that's not an easy thing to do.
I can't wait for the next!!

BECOME by Ali Cross is a page-turning debut! Desolation (Desi) is a compelling character--exactly the kind of girl I want to read about. Someone with internal as well as external conflicts that must be overcome.
The story takes the reader through the range of emotions, with quick wit and excellent writing, to tears when Desi must make hard decisions.
Ultimately, BECOME is about making choices, but I guarantee you won't be able to predict what Desi ultimately chooses...

More of a 2.5 the biggest reason why I couldn't get into this book is because for the whole book I was confused until the end where the things I was confused about that didn't make sense finally started to make sense, and I would have enjoyed this book more if things were cleared up sooner as by the time things were cleared up I was so frustrated that I couldn't deal. Overall I'm really sad that I don't enjoy this book as I was excited by the premise.

From the depths of Helheim to the lofts of Asgard, this novel propels us on a breathtaking journey of self-sacrifice and redemption. The author takes characters that should be impossible to sympathize with and makes you fall in love with them. I was completely swept away and utterly surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. The author has made a fan for life of me.

I was intrigued at first, though I found the Norse variation on Heaven/Hell jarring. But as the story progressed, it felt as if it lost some of the emotional weight that allowed me to identify with Desi and the other characters, and by the end I was much less invested in the characters and their fates. Perhaps because so much info was thrown forward quickly in an effort to reach the climax.

I really enjoyed this book. I was excited to keep reading so that I could find out why would happen next.
One thing that puzzles me....WHAT is Miri? Is she something or just....Miri? And why did it sound like there was some sort seual tension between Miri an Father Cornelius when he was introduced???????
I guess I'll just have to continue reading the rest of the books in order to find out.

Made it about 75 pages. Not my thing. Definitely not something I would want my teenager reading either. Not that I have one yet, but I will soon enough. Sorry dear author. I try not to be to harsh or negative, too much descriptive violence and immorality. I get that it's the devil's daughter as the main character, maybe it's just me, but I don't need to read it.

And I loved it.
Gorgeous writing. Incredible story.
