Very sweet to read a longtime shepherd’s reflection on psalm 23. He explains the thorough care sheep require, which most people aren’t familiar with (at least I wasn’t!) which helps to deeper understand the parallels David is making in Psalm 23 about our relationship with God as our shepherd. It’s so cool to see the ways God created the physical world to reflect supernatural truth and show us shadows of Himself.
Feels like chicken soup, very comforting, simple language. Great book to read on the beach.
But I do have to say in the second half he makes some scripture interpretations/ draws parallels that seem like stretches/ conjectures
I absolutely loved this book. You realize just how intentional each word in Psalm 23 is and also become increasingly aware of the care God longs to give us.
“Our view of Him is often too small - too cramped - too provincial - too human. And because it is we feel unwilling to allow Him to have authority or control - much less outright ownership of our lives.”
This book is one I will definitely be rereading and will rediscover all the good knowledge nuggets in it.
Really enjoyed this read! Part of it felt like a children’s book because it had pictures and because of the simple depth in the pages. Short and brief chapters, but so much good in them!
There are so many parables, passages and illustrations in the Bible that would have made perfect sense to the early Christians because of the culture and lifestyle in that time. I believe psalm 23 is one of those. I don’t personally know any shepherds, so I think it has been hard to really grasp the true meaning of psalm 23 with all its symbolism. This is such a unique book, written from the perspective of a shepherd, and broken down verse-by-verse, outlining the significance of each. As many are, I’m very familiar with psalm 23 and would even venture to call it my favorite psalm, and now I have an entirely new and much more profound perspective on it. I highly recommend this for those looking to dive deeper into this psalm!
Phillip Keller takes you through Psalm 23 from his perspective of being a long time shepherd in East Africa. I walked away with a much deeper appreciation, understanding and awe of Jesus’ claim of being our “good shepherd”. This book grew my affection for the Lord and bolstered my trust in his provision and protection.
Every time I read this book I come away comforted, encouraged, and with a fresh understanding of this incredible psalm. I first read it when I was a teenager; I am now 71, and I have read it several times in between. But this time seemed to mean more, and I got much more out of it. This is indeed a classic which should be read several times throughout one's life, with much benefit to gain.
This is truly a special book. Hearing about Psalm 23 from the perspective of a shepherd is beautiful and eye opening. The author provides great illustration for us to connect with this passage on a much deeper and more intimate manner.
This author masterfully created the most beautiful study of such a well known and often quoted psalm. By weaving his personal experience as an actual shepherd with Biblical truths and promises, he creates an extremely deep and intimate look at the meaning of each line of Psalm 23. Just so good!!
SUCH a good read! I finished it four days ago and want to read it again. It offered me such a new perspective on the meaning behind Psalm 23, some of which left me teary-eyed at the end of certain chapters. Especially for Westerners, I think this book paints a beautiful and otherwise unknown portrait of a shepherd's lifestyle in the Middle East. This creates a whole new understanding of King David's potential motivations when originally writing the iconic psalm. 10/10 recommend to anyone, Christian or not.
After reading many fiction books it was time well spent reading this book. The book reminded me of where I should always be looking in this busy world and a different perspective of this Psalms.
