Risdaverse #11

When She's Wary

Rate this book
Being stolen from Earth has taught me that there's nothing in this universe to be trusted. Not people, not promises. So I make sure that I'm prepared for the worst at all times. I fill my homestead with pit traps. I make weapons for fun. I avoid my friendly neighbors.

And I never leave my house if I can help it.

So when I find a deathly-ill cat alien on my living room floor, I do what any sensible human woman would do. I put a stun-stick to his jock and demand answers.

He should be scared. Terrified. So why is this idiot flirting with me?

This novella features a skittish weapon-loving heroine, a hero who loves her just as she is, and vibes. Just vibes. Enjoy!

Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.

This was cute but…. 🐈

So these Risdaverse books are always great for a good time, they are mostly light fare, brain candy and have very low conflict. This book was no exception and had all the usual warm and fuzzies but I just had the cringies the whole time I read this. The hero was an overgrown cat and Dixon leaned into his cat-like features at every opportunity. I just couldn’t get over it. It was too off-putting for me. He had whiskers, fur, claws, a raspy tongue, he purred, he had a mane, he marked his territory, his tail twitched and he preferred to sleep in a round bed (she snuck that one in at the end). I just couldn’t. I don’t even think this is about me not being a cat person, but more that I can’t get into the sexualization of pets. It’s just not my kink. I don’t really like werewolf books much either for the same reason. So this was very much a case of personal preference on one hand, but also, there was a certain amount of overkill here as well. I read the author’s note out of curiosity (I rarely read those) and Ruby says that this book was inspired by her new pet kitten and that just sent me…I laughed for a while but then felt really uncomfortable. Ok it’s weird that of all the things out there to be triggered by, I’m triggered by cats, but at one point this book felt like puss ‘n boots: the porno, and I just couldn’t.

So I think I learned my lesson and will avoid all Praxiian books in this series in future. If you can get over a woman screwing a large cat-man, this is cute.

YOU WERE WRONG MY PAST SELF!!!!!

for me this was ruby's BEST book. it wasn't insta-love they spend FIVE MONTHS before they started dating. AND he didn't jerk off on her door like some other nasty praxiians BEFORE they become something more 🙌🏼 he's the standard 💋 maybe i do love some praxiians 😌

tabitha was so real with her way of dealing with trauma, i like reading fluffy stuff but most of the time it's confusing how they adopt so easily with their new life after years of slavery. i loved that he waited patiently until she was ready to make progress 🤍

MINA AND MYCRUL making a cameo???? plus mention of bee?? yeah she put all her best works in this book😋😋

(april 20) note to my future self: this one is about praxiian so don't get excited when it's released 😩

I love the Risdaverse series and even when I read one I don’t necessarily connect as well with, I’m still thrilled to continue the series. I have never dnf’d one either so I knew I was going to devour When She’s Wary as soon as it released. This is probably my favorite Risdaverse too (although Bad Guy and Worse Guy are up there even though they’re not “officially” within the series and the couple from Bad Guy make a cameo here). I loved this book from start to end and it made my heart enormously happy.

Jrrru (H) is a Praxiian (cat like alien) who’s on Risda III to be with his brother who recently mated with a human woman there. His brother and his mate like to use noli, which is an aphrodisiac for the Praxiians and Jrrru accidentally gets affected by it too, tries to counteract it, makes himself horny and sick, and gets the brilliant idea to introduce himself to one of the neighbors. Tabitha (h) is a weapons-loving, trap setting, cautious woman who needs to feel safe and have access to certain necessities after the abuse she suffered during her abduction. She’s not excited to discover a sickly Jrrru on her porch but she still helps him, while making it clear she’ll take him out if necessary. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama and neither are virgins (no details given really).

Jrrru is enamored with Tabitha’s prickliness and this encounter leads to the most patient, sweet wooing of this series imo. Praxiians are territorial and protective of their mates and they do “mark” their mate’s territory as part of that (it’s ejaculating on their door) so fyi, there’s some cultural discussions that take place too. I loved how Jrrru embraces who Tabitha is and is supportive of what makes her happy. Tabitha slowly lets him in and the slow burn of their relationship was just amazing. I thought both characters showed some growth with Jrrru learning not to lean so much into his charm and Tabitha learning she could be safe and depend on others despite the horrors she experienced (I do think this story addresses the abuse some of the women went through and the aftereffects more so than some of the other stories). The intro of steam and the slow nature of that progression was also perfect. And y’all, there’s no third act breakup.

I would 110% recommend this one! The story ends with their HEA and a short time jump ahead that’s steamy and sweet. I’m really hoping to see these two as cameos at some point.

This was so sweet and tbh, Tabitha reacts the exact way I would if I'd been through that trauma. Low angst, high vibes

Another sweet Rhisdaverse novella involving a Praxiian hero. I liked this fine, even though cat-guys really aren't my jam.

Tabitha has gone through a lot, and because of that she's very cautious about everything. Jrrru is enthralled by Tabitha the moment that he meets her, but he is very willing to give her the time and space that she needs to feel comfortable. Pretty sweet.

I know I'll end up reading the Rhisdaverse series again in the future, but I'll probably only re-read the ones with the Mesakkah heroes.

Mina and Mycrul from "Bad Guy" show up for a bit.

⭐⭐
2 stars.

➕ What I liked :

Loyal/sweet/patient and rather goofy hero.

The hero was not a Mesakkah or Sa-khui but a Praxiian.

Love/sex did not magically "fix/cure” her trauma.
(She is/was still working through things.)

➖ What I disliked :

Very insta-lust and insta-love from the heroes side/part.

I have No problem with the alien being a praxiian or another alien species other than Mesakkah/Sa-khui they all have some weird and freaky stuff about their bodies/looks/appearance etc.
But I found it a little annoying with how repetitious the descriptive words were used to
in a over the top way describe how “cat-like” the praxiian was… it would have been more interesting and have added a little more depth if the hero had a interesting personality (other than him being goofy)...and not just things about his body/looks but instead his personality etc.

The heroine also needed depth because her personality is all about making weapons and pushing people away (even other human females) and being angry… not much more really.

The couple/main characters feels very mismatched. (Over the top opposite attract and over the top “grumpy”/sunshine trope)

Many parts of the story/plot felt underdeveloped and rushed and the time jump in the story just made it worse.
(Even for a novella it lacked detail/world-building and character background etc.)

The flow/pacing was strange.
(Both too slow and too fast even for a novella)

A unlikable heroine.
(It is understandable that the heroine is wary/careful but also guarded/defensive and has big trust issues because of her traumatic past.
But the heroines attitude and personality is mean and hurtful but also somewhat toxic or/and hostile.
She pushes people (even other human females) away from her that are just trying to be her friend or nice/helpful to her and sees them as fake etc. but also how she is towards the hero among other things.
In other words she is just way too prickly and unfriendly… and she was really not ready for a relationship so it felt kind of forced.)

Lacking romantic build-up and chemistry.

Formulaic in the character description/character choice: small/tiny human and huge hulking alien.
(Would have been/Would be really interesting to maybe see much more variety in the character descriptions/character choices…. Some more female characters like Kate, Leilani, Devi etc. But also some variety to the male characters as well.... different looks/appearance and/or different aliens species.)

3.5 ⭐️ Tabitha the angry kitten meets Jrrru the cuddly cat-man. I liked this better than the last one. Maybe because Tabitha’s stockpiling of weapons made way more sense to me than Chelsea’s lack of self preservation.
Jrrru is a little insta-lusty but it’s Risdaverse…so go with it. Tabitha is suspicious at first, but soon can’t wait to see her big orange kitty-man every time he makes an excuse to visit. It’s supposed to be more “slow-burn” but it’s only 120-ish pages
Again it’s fine cause Risdaverse…so you guessed it, we go with it.
I think I’m ready for a new alien species of love interest next book. The kitty-men aren’t my favorite

I love a good slow burn. Better than that, I love a man that's willing to go slow and do what it takes to make his woman feel safe. To build things up so that she can trust him with herself.

Jrrru was wonderful and not intimidated by Tabitha's prickly wariness. This was a lovely, cavity inducing sweet slow burn. Jrrru and Tabitha learned the reward is all the better when you put in the work. I loved this couple and how they were the opposite of Chelsea and Hrrrusek (Or however you spell his name. I can't remember lol). Though both couples were perfect for each other, the way they evened each other out.

I love this series of little Syfy romance novellas. I hope they keep coming.

So EFFING sweet I got a toothache

This romance was a slow burn in novella form but it worked! I wasn’t so sure about the MMC from the last book, but he had a lovely growth arc alongside the FMC that made him the dreamiest catboi. Tabitha, like every human on Risda, has ALL the trauma and copes by being reclusive and prickly. I loved the acceptance of coping mechanisms.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: slavery, discussion of starvation and severe dehydration

Cute, quick novella (that took me longer to read than it should bc I’m on vacation) about a human who’s been through it and is scared of everything and a cat alien man who’s patient enough to woo her.

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💚🖤❤️💜
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📘
World building: 🌏🌍🌎🌏
Character development: 😭☺️😊🙃
Narrator(s): 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Tabitha - she was abducted from Earth by aliens and spent years as slave. She now has a homestead on Risda 3, where she lives alone and keeps away from others. She lived for years in misery as a slave and has a huge fear of any alien male, so she keeps to her farm as much as possible.

The Hero: Jrrru - he is a Praxian, which is a humanoid race that is cat-like in many ways. He works on Risda 3 and is currently staying with his brother and his brother's human wife, who is a farmer. One day, his brother and sister-in-law decide to try Noli flower, which is an aphrodisiac to Praxians. When Jrrru gets too close to the house, he can smell the Noli and starts suffering the effects of it, though luckily, he has null root that is supposed neutralize the effects of different poisons.

The story: Jrrru eats two of the roots, which taste awful and make his stomach upset, but doesn’t have any effect on his manhood. He decides to walk to the neighbor’s place to see if he can take care of it the natural way. Though when he gets to Tabitha’s house, he collapses on her doorstep, after throwing up in her bushes. Tabitha, is fearful, but the goodness in her overrides her apprehension and she helps him.

I like this series quite a bit, though I don’t much like the Praxians. I like the blue aliens because aside from their huge size, their horns, tails and skin color, they look very much like humans. Praxians, on the other hand, have fur, pointed ears like a cats, a split lip like a cat, a flat pink nose, and eyes like a cat. Even though they are tall and muscular, they are just a bit too animalistic for my tastes. So, I picture them being a bit more human looking.

This audiobook was narrated in dual points of view via dual narration. Mason Lloyd and Jillian Macie narrated it. I like both narrators quite a bit. They have done many of Ruby Dixon’s books in the past and are perfect for this series. Mason has a deep voice, and he speaks in a slightly stilted way that I really like for the alien men, kind makes them sound like they are not used to to talking a lot or not used to the language. I don’t quite know why, but it works for me. Jillian also has a great voice and always sounds very natural.

Jrruu is the guy you’ve always hoped for. A guy who likes to have fun, but he also knows how to cater to his woman. He’s also loyal, sexy and he brings gifts 🎁!! If a man is willing to wait for you ladies and not with stipulations it’s safe to say he may be the one.

Tabitha is living in her fears. Unlike many of the heroines in the series her slavery was not filled with Assault but neglect used similar to prisoners of war. The tactics are usually used in the beginning to strike fear into the individual and after a while the captor actual forgets the prisoners are there and will leave them to their demise.

Tabitha is a product of a harsh environment and unlike many of the women of Risda who are looking for someone to save her she decides to save herself. Tabitha is an absolute badass and she has her own weapons (some are even homemade which leads me to believe that our girl Tabitha had family in bad places) *cough cough* Mafia .. on another note this was classic Ruby with a slow burn and not much sexy time but great character development and time to learn the characters in and out.

I loved everything about this book so much I started it not too long ago and finished it !! Oh this rocked my world 🌍!!

Happy reading everyone 😍🥰

Jrrru & Tabitha

This meet-cute moment is absolutely hilarious and iconic to me!🤣 I loved how sweet Jrrru is and how patient he was for the woman he knows is meant for him 🥹

TROPES: alien romance, caretaking scene (reluctantly from the heroine to the hero when they meet), great banter, grumpy-sunshine, hero falls first, I hate everyone but you (heroine), kick-butt woman, meet cute, neighbors, novella, worshipping herp

I stroke my whiskers with my free hand, still waiting for the right moment to gift her with the smelly candle I’m now regretting purchasing. Some females are not smelly candle females, I don’t think. Chelsea might be a candle female. Tabitha is more of a “knives and garrotes” female.

Tabitha and Jrrru, the other Praxxian brother, were so cute together. I loved the contrast between last books MC’s and how Tabitha was not sunshine and smiles but making and hoarding weapons and traps. I’m pretty sure if anything like this happened to me I’d also be like Tabitha. Jrrru the carefree charismatic brother really stepped up and matured. He became what she needed and it was perfect.

A very wary, closed off human woman and the Praxiian crashing on his newly mated brother's couch next door. Tabitha and Jrrru, my friends. YESSSSSS.

Tabitha is desperately lonely, but she doesn't trust anyone enough to let them close. Literally, as it turns out. She has pit traps dug around her house to keep people away and she makes weapons to defend herself (as best she can) in her spare time. When Jrrru stumbles up to her doorstep after dosing himself with something that didn't sit well with him, she's forced to interact with him.

For the record, Jrrru's dosing of himself was of a medical nature. Sort of. Let's just say that Jrrru has a minor lack of impulse control and not a lot of patience to give said medicine time to work. That said, living with Hrrrusek and the fearless Chelsea has given Jrrru a little insight into how, uhh, trying it can be to live with someone who doesn't always think their actions through. So while he is a little impulsive at times, he DEFINITELY gets better as time goes on.

I mean, the guy was the definition of patience when it came to wooing Tabitha. He took his time letting her get to know him and he very much let her set the pace. Seeing as how Tabitha had a lot of walls and scowls, we're talking months, not days or weeks. So, yeah, Jrrru learns patience and that taking your time and planning things out can have a BIG payoff.

MAN, I enjoy spending time on Risda and getting to revisit couples (Mycrul and Mina!) we've met before. And Tabitha and Jrrru? YESSSSSS. *thumbs up*

I really enjoyed this one.

Not sure if it’s cause the wooing took some time so we got some decent character development investment making the ending more satisfying but it was good.

I don’t mind an overly and early smutty novel (lol hello this is a Ruby Dixon novel) but I feel like some of the previous installments lost any sort of tension after our characters smashed. Then those novels tried to artificially inseminate (lol yeah I went there, boo tomatoes tomatoes) tension and low-angst but at that point in the book I didn’t care anymore and usually DNF because things felt too formulaic.

This book was one of the first ones in a while that was really well paced even though the character’s relationship developed slowly. It was still interesting with every small and new thing we learned about each character. Those onion layers were very nice.

Also did Ruby get a new beta/copy editor? We got some new twists on things! Was very excited to see a different side to the noli, praxiian, meat-stock, and oral smex Ruby Dixon-isms. And no breeding kink. Not that there’s anything wrong with it, there’s just like… 30 books out there for you. Sometimes you get tired of eating noodles and want bread you know?

Anyways, good job Ruby. Really enjoyed Jrrru and Barlia. ❤️

When She's Fearless was cute but THIS RIGHT HERE?? 🔥🔥🔥

Maybe it's because I related so much more to the prickly unsocial nervous wreck.

Or maybe it's because I'm a sucker for the Princess Bride style courting that Jrrru did for Tabitha. (it was very as you wish and so sweet) ♥️

Or maybe the fact that Jrrru told her that he wanted to wear her thighs around his neck like a scarf.... Which, you know, PEAK romance.

Jrrru is on the list of Rubyverse faves for sure. 🤌🏻

Sweet, slow-burn, strangers-to-friends-to-lovers alien romance between Tabitha, a wary and lonely human, and Jrrru, a Praxian that feels unsure of his place on Risda.

Jrrru and Tabitha meet under awkward circumstances - he was unintentionally dosed with Noli when his brother and his mate used it. He tried to use an antidote and ends up sick on the neighbor's doorstep. She doesn't want to help him, but she feels compelled to due to her past. Jrrru slowly befriends Tabitha, and their relationships builds over months.

Tabitha was resourceful, kind-hearted, and brave. Jrrru was patient, respectful, and hardworking. I loved the shy and awkward rapport between the two of them. I always enjoy my time on Risda.

More of a slow burn than I expected of a Risdaverse novella, but I enjoyed it. The FMC has trauma that manifests in reclusive, weapon-building behaviour, and the MMC is a golden retriever type (ironic, as he’s a more cat-like alien) who is super patient and considerate when courting her — after a very… excitable introduction when he’s accidentally consumed aphrodisiac). I can always count on Ruby Dixon for an all-in hero.

First off I LOVED the one before this, When She’s Fearless, Chelsea was so inspiring, and Hrrusek was just the sweetest sexiest dad bod praxian! But when I heard about this one coming up, I knew I was gonna vibe with Tabitha hard. And I did. I loved this book and Tabitha And Jrrruk, they may be one of my new favorites.

Tabitha has been through some serious shit, and she has a lot of valid defenses because of it. She doesn’t like people near her or in her space, and she prefers to stay in her house, in the fortress she created. Safe.
So when a very sick, but very horny praxian shows up on her doorstep, what’s a girl to do? Debate killing him and hiding his body of course.

Jrrruk is having a bad night, to say the least. This….was not the ideal first meeting with the reclusive neighbor next door. Ideally she would have been down for mating, but the stun stick pointing at his balls says otherwise. However Jrrruk is not put off by her prickly, and down right threatening, nature. He falls for her even harder.
He is fascinated by Tabitha and her magnificent scent, and the fact that his usual charms do absolutely nothing to win the female he knows is his. But he is happy to let her lead, and even wait forever, so long as she wants him around. Trust is hard won with his female, but when its given, it’s the most precious gift of all.

My experience: If you have trauma, or even just neurospicy things that make it hard for you to leave the house or trust…anyone? This book is for you! As a survivor with diagnosed agoraphobia, this book was like reading into my soul.😳 It was a really cathartic read, without being too heavy (and with plenty of the unparalleled Ruby humor). For me, just to see someone else have the same issues and struggles with leaving the house or letting people into their space was so so powerful. There are so many moments I almost cried from relief. These things aren’t seen or talked about a lot, and it was so nice to see Jrrruk understand and love her, and be ok with the things she needed to feel safe. He didn’t try to change her, he wanted to just be there for her, to protect her and help her make weapons, to help her feel safe. So in conclusion- man I didn’t know how much I needed to see this exact story in a book. So thank you so much Ruby for writing this.🥹💚

Alien-ness of Peen: 👽🔘🔘🔘🔘(mostly humanoid but BIG👀🍆)
MCs Together:🫂🫂🫂🫂🔘 (they interact pretty often and hang out a lot, with some very small moments away)
Burn: 🔥🔘🔘🔘🔘 (Slow burn, sexual encounters pretty late in the book, I think between 60-70%-ish🤔)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🔘🔘🔘 (This one is lower spice, but the scenes are SUPER HOTT 🥵)
