Useful techniques to help you overcome social anxiety, improve communication skills, and build meaningful relationships. And also, improving your small talk skills can boost your self-confidence and can help you feel more comfortable in social situations.
The author of this book makes some pretty bold assumptions: the inability to or discomfort with conversing or making small talk stems from social anxiety, and social anxiety comes from a lack of confidence. Personally and professionally, as a registered nurse, I don't agree with either of these assumptions. Therefore, the book didn't resonate with me. I honestly wish it simply was what the title and subtitle promised: simple guidance to help you make small talk if you don't find that an easy thing to do—for whatever reason—and some easy techniques to help you do so. By the way, the book didn't have any particular list of 31 techniques for anything, nor was anything numbered. If you read any books on conversation or small talk, the techniques mentioned will be nothing new to you. I didn't like how the introduction starts right off insulting the reader and trying to make the reader feel bad so that they would be more open to the author's ideas. That's a technique espoused by some nonfiction writing courses, but I'm not a fan. The author also places way too much emphasis on the importance of small talk, like you'll never progress in your career and life if you don't get this down with the help of this book. Not a fan of that approach and tone. If you believe that your personal discomfort with making small talk stems from social anxiety and a lack of confidence, you may find this book more helpful than I did.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Great book on how to manage small talk. I wish i had had this book few years back when i really struggled with small talk and dealing with social anxiety on daily a basis. This book share alot of great strategies and technique not only how to enter small talk but also how to exit it.
Items of Note: * The goal of small talk isn't to be the most interesting person in the room, but to make the other person feel interesting. * Think of conversations as a game of catch. You throw a question, they throw an answer back, and the exchange keeps going. * Every conversation is a chance to learn something new. Approach social interactions with a mindset of discovery.
I’ve struggled with social anxiety for years and can find it difficult meeting people and making good impressions. I loved the scenarios and prompts the book gave for these situations! The phrases alone are incredibly helpful. Highly recommend.
