Preston, a lifestyle Dominant, recently retired from a career on stage at an exclusive club. His vision of a quiet retirement shattered when he fell for singer Paulo, a complete D/s novice. In this installment of the ongoing story of their life together, Paulo worries that Preston is no longer interested in topping him. “Adaptations” first appeared in the Toy Beads anthology from Torquere Press.
Before dawn and after dark, Lee Benoit is a writer of queer fiction, some contemporary, some speculative, some historical. During the daylight hours she is a professor of sociology & anthropology. In the old days, Lee traveled the world doing field research. Nowadays, she lives in the middle of a New England hayfield where being a two-spirit single parent provides more than enough excitement. Lee also paints watercolors, bakes wild-yeast sourdough bread, and shares her bed with a pair of cats and an abjectly adoring hound-retriever mutt. Whenever she gets itchy feet and misses the world of research and advocacy, Lee invents a new world in her head and takes notes on what happens there.
You do not need to have read the previous stories about Master Preston and Paulo to enjoy this little short, but I believe they are well worth checking out. They were a couple I stumbled upon when I was first discovering BDSM and it was quite different from what I’d found. There was no smug Dom stomping about ordering a fluttering twink to lick his boots and paddling his butt for being bad, it was more of a gentle dominance tempered with a lot of love, understanding and humour on both sides. So for those not familiar with the couple I recommend you check out more of their stories, but this can be read as a stand-alone.
On with this story. Paolo is much younger than his master, by more than 20 years, and Preston has arthritis in his hands. This makes it difficult for him to administer the discipline which is part of their lifestyle as he can’t properly hold a flogger, and he doesn’t have the strength for something like an old-fashioned spanking with a bare hands. Rather than talk to Paolo about his concerns, he starts to withdraw, leading Paolo to believe that he’s losing interest in him and it’s only a matter of time until he gets dumped. Paolo approaches Preston’s old friend Tasim for advice, however doesn’t really take it, instead purchasing anal beads which only upsets Preston more because he doesn’t have the strength in his hands to use them.
You see both sides of the story in this one and I just enjoy how much these two very different men love each other. Paolo doesn’t care that Preston has arthritis, he just worships him and their life, however I think the insecurity on both sides is realistic given the situation. Paolo fearing he’s boring the older man and Preston fearing that Paolo will find a younger more capable lover. Also Paolo is in a choir and is always singing songs and changing the lyrics to make them rather dirty, which both amuses and dismays Preston, but he’d never tell his boy to stop. Here is a bit of his Roberta Flack rewrite:
“Changing my life with his tools, Licking me softly with his tongue, Licking me open with his tongue, Owning my whole life with his words, Domming me all night with his dong…”
Finally Preston realizes he’s pushing Paolo away and reaches out for help, finding a man who makes toys adapted for people with special needs. He takes the beads to him and they work out a contraption which allows Preston to use them just fine in a very steamy scene of reconnection between the two men.
As I said, I just love these two and the title is very apt. It’s about looking at other ways to find the same pleasure in your partner as you always did, rather than feeling a bit sorry for yourself that you’re not the same. It’s a nice touch that shows physical problems or handicaps don’t have to mean it’s not still sizzling in the bedroom.
This is a cute, yet thoughtful, story about Preston, a Dom with health issues, and Paolo, a loving sub, who is desperate because he thinks his master doesn't want him anymore. It is also, and this is the thougthful part, about what true D/s is really all about, and it isn't all physical.
I first read this story in April 2009, when it was part of Toy Box: Beads, and I'm glad I was reminded of it now that it's out as a single story. If you like reading about unusual D/s relationships and how loving partners can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, you will probably like this story. It is a great example for 'mind over matter'.
Enjoyable and poignant short about a Dom with arthritic hands confusing his sub by acting distant and uninterested. I haven't read the others in the series but I think I'll check them out, as this was well written and touching, as well as having a hot sex scene once Preston figures out how to get around his problem.
