In 2005, the children from the BBC's groundbreaking "Child of Our Time" television series reached an important milestone as they turned five years old. Tessa Livingstone, who has worked on the series since its inception, has brought together a wealth of information and reassuring guidance to help everyone achieve the best for their child. Issues such as personality, siblings, love, learning, anger, friendship, gender, self-awareness, success, ambition, and empathy are discussed and interspersed with games, fun tests, and questionnaires to help parents see their children as individuals with unique needs and gifts. It will help them cope with the many issues over which they have little control, and guide them through those where they can influence and affect their young child's life for the better.
I really enjoyed this book. It is the book accompanying the BBC television series - and it would have been great to have seen the series too. It was different from the usual childrens development books that I have read in that it follows several families from birth to 5 years and it shows different parenting styles and circumstances. The story of Alison - a single mum with no arms and her son Parys was particularly moving. It made me stop and think when I found things difficult with my daughter just how much harder things could be...It was also an interesrting book in that it had a very modern feel to it and the style was casual - conversational in places. I really enjoyed the "realness" of this book as well as all the little practical hints, tips and tests in the coloured boxes throughout this book.
This is the only preggerly/baberly book that I've bought (rather than library lending). I love the telly programme and had heard that the book is very good. It's not setting the world alight so far, but I do like flicking through the pictures to say "aww" at photos of Ivo and Alex and to feel sad when I see pictures of Eve and her mum, knowing that her mum's since passed away.
