How can a band that started as a joke become one of music s most unstoppable forces? These sonic soulmates have endured death, addictions, an unstable line-up and have still managed to produce some of the most vital rock n roll of the past three decades. This book charts the Red Hot Chili Peppers unlikely rise, from their days as funk-loving punks wearing little more than smirks to their current status as a multi-million sellers and dynamic performers. Here s the complete Red Hot Chili Peppers story, from their first meeting at a Los Angeles high school to the creation of such career defining albums as BloodSugarSexMagik, Californication, and By The Way.
Jeff Apter is the author of more than 30 books, many dealing with the world of music. He has written biographies of Keith Urban, Malcolm and Angus Young of AC/DC, Jeff Buckley and the Bee Gees. As ghostwriter, he has worked with ARIA Hall of Famers Kasey Chambers and Richard Clapton, and AC/DC’s Mark Evans. He was also the creative consultant for the award–nominated live production A State of Grace: The Music of Jeff and Tim Buckley and spent four years on staff at Rolling Stone Australia.
This was an interesting experience that made me love the RHCP even more although it seems that the author's idea is to make us fall out of love by constantly listing their indiscretions with drugs, women etc and talking about their flaws as humen beings even thought he barely knows them if at all. But the music part was informative and interesting because it made me search for and listen to new (to me) music hence the 4 stars. I wish there was a book who's author would be closer to the source i.e. the band.
I have seen a lot of the bad reviews for this book but I thought it was a great read. I don't know if people were expecting Philip Norman or Mick Wall but Jeff Apter is more than up to the task. The book delves deeply into each of the current and past members and sometimes it can get pretty scary. I am always amazed when I read a rock star bio at the drug use etc... I guess true art can only be created from intense pain.
Not much new here if you read Scar Tissue. The author is Australian, I believe, so that provided a slightly different perspective. Just another part of my summer of Chili Peppers.
About halfway through but not sure if its worth going further. The glorification of self centred people producing music that doesn't grab me (with lyrics that seem to be aimed at adolescent boys). I made it through the lead singers autobiography and maybe that was enough.
Ok, finished it. Over all it came across as being overly sycohphantic but of course the target market would be fans of the band. This being the case of course the author will leave the reader with the general feel that the group, despite some failings, is over all, wonderful. I differ.
it was ok this book the begging was lot of info because i didn't know that the ass player went to high school with slash fro G&R but in the middle of the book got boring for me.
