A 911 call reports a dead young mother, her critically injured husband, and their missing seven-year-old daughter. Pete and Zoe realize that as the storm moved north from Louisiana, a mysterious killer came with it.

Annette Dashofy is the USA Today best-selling author of 12 novels in the multi Agatha Award nominated Zoe Chambers mystery series about a paramedic and deputy coroner in rural Pennsylvania’s tight-knit Vance Township. In addition, her standalone, Death by Equine, about a veterinarian at a second-rate thoroughbred racetrack, won the 2021 Dr. Tony Ryan Book Award. The second in her new Detective Honeywell Mystery series, Keep Your Family Close, was released in December 2023. Her upcoming What Comes Around (Zoe Chambers #13) is scheduled for release in May 2024. Annette and her husband live on ten acres of what was her grandfather’s dairy farm in southwestern Pennsylvania with their very spoiled cat, Kensi.
I found I really enjoyed this one and thought it was done really well. The liked the pace of the story and the plot. The overall suspense kept me glued to it. The writing was good and I was throughly entertained. I recommend this book and I’m definitely reading another one by this author. I hope this is helpful. Thanks Levels Best Books via NetGalley.
We readers are a funny lot. The house could be falling down around us, and if we are completely ensconced in a book, we would keep reading. When one of those books comes along, there is no greater pleasure for a reader. Well, Helpless, Zoe Chambers #12, by Annette Dashofy is certainly that book. It is as riveting a read as I’ve had in some time. Dashofy is a master plotter, with different points of focus that all work together in creating the urgency of action from beginning to end. There is not a scene in this book that isn’t on the edge of the difference between disaster and success. The pace is in sync with the rushing flood waters and the ticking of the clock. Time is no one’s friend in this story, and helpless is an all-pervasive feeling in the face of the disasters of nature and of man.
It's a horrifying scene that a neighboring farmer arrives at when going to his friend’s house to fill sandbags for an approaching major storm to western Pennsylvania. Michelle O’Donnell lies dead on her kitchen floor and her husband Danny O’Donnell has been shot and pinned beneath a tractor. Their seven-year-old daughter Peyton is nowhere to be found. As law enforcement, including Vance Township Police Chief Pete Adams and his wife, Corner Zoe Chambers arrive on the scene, it’s also discovered that Danny had been working on the tractor, replacing a tire. The perpetrator drove the tractor onto Danny as he lay wounded and then sabotaged the tractor so it couldn’t be driven off the dying man. Unbelievably, Danny is still alive, and he’s able to tell them what happened, and that Peyton has been kidnapped.
Pete and County Detective Wayne Baronick once again join forces and are now tasked with finding a cold-blooded killer, a sadistic monster, before the child can also come to harm. But, this killer is cunning and already has a head-start that doesn’t bode well for the authorities, and no one knows his identity. The severe weather from Hurricane Iona in New Orleans is a double-edged sword. While it prevents the killer from leaving the area, it also makes conditions near impossible for law enforcement chasing him. People who live in low-lying areas of Monongahela County are frantically trying to sandbag their houses and businesses and farms to keep flood waters out. Roadways are filling with water, creating conditions for cars to be swept away, and, trees are toppling onto roadways making the roads impassable. But, Pete and his deputies and Baronick won’t let the conditions surrounding them keep them from a full-out pursuit of a child in danger and her unstable kidnapper. Amber alerts are issued, with a vehicle description finally being put together, but the alert is only as good as the information is current, and when the perpetrator starts to switch vehicles, the new vehicle must be determined before adding to the alert. It’s a game of cat-and-mouse that couldn’t have occurred under worse conditions. And, the clock keeps ticking.
Ordinarily, Zoe would head to the morgue where she would do the autopsy on Michelle, but Danny has asked her to stay with him, and that’s where she knows she has to be. Danny is the blacksmith for her horses and a friend as well, so her presence has a calming effect on him. A tent-like structure is set up over Danny and the rescue workers while the storm rages around them and rain pounds the canvas above their heads. Zoe’s former EMT partners are working tirelessly to try and keep Danny alive. Dr. Fuller arrives to help, which is outside of his usual duties, proving just how much everyone is invested in saving what’s left of this family. Danny’s friend Leroy, desperate to help, is sent after supplies to fix the tractor so they can drive it off Danny. Danny is fully coherent, and ironically, the pressure of the tractor is keeping him from bleeding out. And, the clock keeps ticking.
With Helpless, Annette Dashofy has taken the Zoe Chambers series deeper into the chilling waters of suspense than ever before. She has set a frenetic, but controlled, pace of action, with intertwining plotlines that must all be resolved in less than 24 hours. Tick tock, tick tock. You will feel that clock ticking the time by with lives on the line. The storm will seem to grasp you in its relentlessness and fury, too. Dashofy takes all the moving parts and brings them together in perfect symphonic blending. Helpless is, of course, already on my Favorites List for 2023, and I’m positive that it will be on many others’ favorites list, too. I know I’ve said this before, and it doesn’t take anything away from the books I said it about, but I do think this is the finest writing Annette Dashofy has produced. The author stated in a recent interview that writing this book was a daunting experience because “writing suspense is way out of my wheelhouse.” Well, Ms. Dashofy, I think you’re going to have to redefine your wheelhouse now.
I received an e-copy of Helpless from the author and from NetGalley. My review reflects my honest assessment of this book.
Heart-pounding! This is actually a 5 star plus book! Nothing at all like the previous Zoe books and not to take anything away from those books but this one is much, much better! Although not for the faint of heart. Fortunately it was not raining as I read this one in two days; I do not recommend reading it during a hurricane.
I was helpless to stop reading, blown away and totally submerged in HELPLESS by Annette Dashofy -- wow! The damage kept mounting from this “perfect storm,” a long, hard day swamped with troubles caused by nature and humans out of balance. Redemption and hope came from the courage and caring shown by Zoe, Pete, and an amazing team of good guys, as they tried to help an injured father and find his kidnapped daughter. Toward the end, I was wishing to have it on audio, hard to read because my eyes were blurred by . . . allergies, yeah, that's it, Sylvia and I are both allergic to cats. It's a rare gift to create people so real and to touch emotions so deeply. One major lesson, even when you feel helpless, keep trying. There’s comfort in knowing you didn’t give up. Another lesson, stop, think, and use strategy. You might want to plan a day or two free of other events because you may not want to put it down, and you might, like me, need some time to come back to real life afterward. I may come back to this one whenever some problem makes me want to give up, not HELPLESS after all.
After a long series of 4 star books with a few 3 star ones mixed in, I have anxiously anticipating reading a book that would keep me captivated from page one. HELPLESS is that book. The Zoe Chambers series of a small town Western Pennsylvania paramedic turned coroner has always been excellent, and one of my favorites. In this latest installment, the author has made a slight tonal shift becoming a little more gritty, less cozy procedural to procedural thriller. And it worked. The whole story takes place in one day with a murder and kidnapping happening as remnants of a hurricane flood the area. As always, the characters and their relationships ground and illuminate the action. Once I started reading, I read until I finished the book. Highly recommended! Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
BIG thanks to both Level Best Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Helpless.
I was blown away by Helpless, which is the 12th book in the Zoe Chambers series! Zoe and her police chief husband, Pete, must find a murderer and rescue the child he kidnapped during massive flooding from what is becoming a hurricane. So much for my plan to read a bit before I went to sleep. I couldn’t put this riveting book down. The suspense was intense!
The wounded and trapped father is Zoe's friend and blacksmith, and he asks her to stay with him during the rescue efforts. Attempts to free Danny fail and his condition worsens, yet all he cares about is his beloved daughter. He's desperate to know she is safe.
I loved all of the characters. (Well, other than the murderer.) Helpless is the first book I've read in the series and it can definitely be read as a standalone. I recommend it!!
The title of the book is most fitting, as Zoe Chambers and Pete Adams find themselves battling time and the weather to find a murderer and a missing child. Keep some tissues handy, because this is probably the darkest (and saddest) book yet in this series. Devoured this in a weekend as I couldn't put down!
Thanks to Level Best Books for access to a digital ARC on NetGalley.
Standout Book in an Incredible Series. Helpless, the newest Zoe Chambers Mystery by Annette Dashofy is compelling, amazing, heartbreaking, exhilarating, exhausting, and so much more. This intense mystery splits between personal tragedies as Pete searches for a missing and endangered child of a murdered woman while Zoe comforts the severely injured father. Both face the dangers not only of a wily murderer but the challenges of extreme flooding interfering with both jobs. My thanks to NetGalley, Level Best Books, and Annette Dashofy for making it possible for me to read an ARC of this incredible tale! I reread Helpless as soon as my copy landed on my ereader. When people say they can't put a book down, this is the book they are talking about.

Review:
After receiving a 911 call, Zoe and Pete go to the farm where the emergency happened. When they get there, they k=find a young mom dead, her husband clinging to life and their daughter missing. Zoe has to help the father and Pete will have to begin searching for the little girl. And with a massive weather coming their way, time is of the essence.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and these descriptions pulled me into the story and did not let me go. The way the author described the weather conditions, the downed trees and the road conditions, I felt like I was right there with them, fighting the elements and racing against the clock. The suspense was palpable. I wanted to keep reading but I was afraid to at times.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well plotted mystery. This was one of the best books that I have read in a while. Do not miss this book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Level Best Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.
Are you up for a solid mystery with lots of action? It’s not quite a police procedural, but close. Zoe, a former paramedic and current county coroner, is married to Pete Adams, police chief in Vance Township. As you read, you will meet a lot of characters and have no trouble keeping track of them. Most of them are people who will put their own lives on the line to insure the safety of others. Some do it as part of their official duties, others because they are good people and good neighbors. The plot centers around a wife murdered, a husband left for dead under gruesome circumstances, and a child kidnaped. The setting which plays heavily into the plot is Hurricane Iona. Sleuthing and life saving work by the EMS is drastically hampered by pelting rains, destructive winds, flooding and road blockages. Car accidents impede roadways and increase the load on emergency personnel; electrical and cell phone outages cause panics. As bodies accumulate in the morgue, Zoe is caught between her official duties as coroner and her inner need to support the husband as a former EMS worker and as a friend. She is also called to the death scenes to process the bodies and desperately wants to help her husband find the missing child. This is a well written book and series. The plot is devised in such a way that the reader wants to keep the story going to hopefully arrive at a happily ever after for the characters. This is not a Hallmark book, however, so don’t expect that level of predictability. I was a little teary eyed at the end, but I admired the author’s fine touch with the conclusion. I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Almost immediately when I started reading Helpless, I knew it had to be part of a series. The main characters, Vance Chief of Police Pete Adams, and his wife Zoe, who is the coroner for the town, seem like fully developed characters from the get-go. Sure enough, this is number 12 in the series, but the fact that I didn't know the main characters or their friends in the small town of Vance did not in any way inhibit my enjoyment of the story.
The story starts off with a bang. The Pennsylvania town is getting the biggest rain it has had in years and the roads are flooding. Those in low lying areas are being asked to move to higher ground. In the midst of all this, a crime is reported. One of their neighbors has been trapped beneath his tractor by the man who shot his wife and kidnapped his daughter. Action ensues as the police and Zoe try to save the trapped man, as well as track down the kidnapper.
The action was literally nonstop and the amazing thing was that the whole book takes places place in one long and grueling day. The reader feels the pressure and panic of Pete as he tries to track the killer while tending to others crisis in the town, and Zoe as she tries to help her friend and neighbor caught in an impossible situation.
I thought the author spun a riveting story that kept me glued to the page. I'm now intrigued to read some of the back catalogue of this series and see if every story is this good!
This was 4 1/2 stars for me, and I'm rounding up to five because I love discovering a new author.
Thanks to NetGalley, Annette Dashofy and the publisher for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I have to admit that I've only read the first 4 installments in the long-running Zoe Chambers "cozy-ish" series. I gravitate toward grittier and darker mysteries than most cozy mysteries can provide but I'm fond of stories that can straddle the line between cozy and suspense mysteries. Anyway, I don't pay as much attention to series that I consider too mild/humorous/slow-moving but when I saw Helpless by Annette Dashofy offered by the publisher, I remembered why I started the series in the first place!
Helpless works well because it keeps the suspense ratcheted and the atmosphere intense. Zoe, by the way, is a paramedic & county coroner married to the PA small town's police chief. I don't think I've ever read a series featuring an EMT or paramedic first responder, and that is what pulled me in a few years ago. Somehow I lost track of this series but I'm excited to go back and read more of the books and see what I missed.
Helpless features a massive storm system barreling up the coast and hitting rural PA at the same time that Zoe and Pete are trying to solve the mystery of who killed their friend's wife and kidnapped their little daughter. They are tasked with doing this while the area floods out roadways, knocks down trees and power lines, and cuts phone service. This book is a bit different than those in the beginning of the series, at least in my opinion, by taking the suspense level up a few notches. I look forward to more of this series! Recommended! thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my advance digital copy
Loved this mystery, couldn’t put it down. My first time and now not my last time reading an Annette Dashofy novel. Loved the cover, perfect! The title so appropriate in so many ways. The storm of all storms hits the town Pete, police chief, and Zoe, coroner, live in. They find themselves at a local farm at the end of a 911 call to a homicide and another victim within inches of his life trapped under a tractor. If anything could be more tragic, their 7 year old daughter is missing , TAKEN! As Pete and Zoe work together, Pete takes off to start the search for 7 year old Peyton. It’s a wild, tragic and unbelievable search to find the murderer and kidnapper. Jaxson Staley , thinks Peyton is his daughter and thought her mother, Michelle was hiding it from him. With a prison record he has nothing to lose. The weather is impeding his efforts to get out of town quickly. Police one step behind him , while Danny , Peyton’s Dad holds on for his life under the tractor. With a lot of help from the community, everyone is doing what they can to help even as more murders are unveiled. What’s going on in this town and will the storm ease to allow this family to be reunited? Who is really Peyton’s father and should you trust the things you hear? Loved this vivid, engaging novel!
On the edge of my seat for so much of this book, Annette kept me believing and questioning both at the same time. I recommend Annette Dashofy and the ability to let yourself get interested one of her mysteries. Thanks @netgalley for the ARC.

I absolutely loved this story, keeps attentions, suspenseful and thrilling. quick read, new author for me, will look into reading more of their books. Thanks to Level Best Books, netgalley, and the author in exchange for an honest review. Published May 9th 2023
n a May 28, 2024, interview on Jungle Red Writers, Annette Dashofy discussed genre labeling within the mystery field. This prompted me to consider Dashofy's characters and their growth from Volume 1 to this spine-tingling Book 12. At the beginning of the series, the lead protagonist, Zoe Chambers, could be considered an amateur sleuth. As an EMT, she was familiar with violent death but could remain professionally detached from the outcome. Now, in Book 12, she is the local coroner, and her husband, Pete, is the chief of police in the adjoining county. It's fortunate that both are highly trained professionals. A major hurricane, Iona, is speeding northward, directly in the path of Monongahela and Vance Counties. The clock is ticking. A body is found in the kitchen of one of Zoe's friends. Danny, the farrier who services Zoe's horses, is found trapped in the barn under a sabotaged tractor. The unknown suspect has also kidnapped Danny's daughter. Danny, barely alive, can still assist the investigators. He begs Zoe to stay with him. Making a compassionate decision, she becomes the liaison between Danny, the medical team, the EMTs, and the deputies trying to apprehend the kidnapper/killer. All are helpless against the power of the hurricane. The tension is palpable; I confess I read the last chapter to get some sleep. Reading it again, knowing the outcome, I cried. Such is the power of Dashofy's work—bringing the reader into the immediate, cinematic reality of today's world and, with a subtle cliffhanger, leaving them eager for more.
Setting the Scene: As Hurricane Iona powers a massive weather front their way, the Vance Township is shaken when a 911 call reports the murder of a young mother, the father clinging to life, and the kidnapping of their 7 year old daughter. As the weather front moves in bringing record breaking flooding, torrential rains, and downed trees, resulting in unpassable roads and shelter-in-place orders, Zoe and others struggle to keep the father alive, while Pete and his force scramble to find the kidnapped little girl and her captor who is leaving a swathe of murders in his wake. So many questions. Who? Why? Where is he now, and where is he heading? How is he staying one step ahead of them?
What I Thought: This was a well crafted story that kept me on the edge of my seat. The detail portrayed in this book ran the risk of tedium, but the skill of Annette Dashofy to craft a story that was simultaneously suspenseful and personal prevailed. I never realized a hurricane that comes ashore in Louisiana could wreak such havoc as far north as Pennsylvania, but beyond the murders and police hunt, this book also conveys the cost to people and property when such events occur. I highly recommend this book, and my appetite is whetted for the next in the series.
With the remains of a tropical storm hitting the area, the last thing that Zoe Chamber-Adams and Pete Adams need is a criminal running around the area. But that’s just what they’ve got. They are called to a horrific scene on a neighbors’ farm. The wife has been shot, the husband left for dead, and their daughter kidnapped. As Pete tries to find the daughter before she is taken out of the area, Zoe tries to learn what she can from the husband. Will the storm help or hurt them?
This is more of a ticking clock thriller than a mystery, with the book taking place over the course of a day. As much as I love this series, this one was a bit of a letdown. I found Zoe’s portion of the story slowed the plot down, and I found it a very dark book, even by this series’ standards. On the other hand, the overall plot of the book was great and I was still always reluctant to set the book down. It was great spending time with Zoe and Pete, and I enjoyed seeing the updates we still got on the series regulars and some ongoing stories. Fans of this great series will still be glad they picked up this book.
The Suspense is unbearable. The inciting incident is unthinkable. The carnage is not over. Anyone who considers author Annette Dashofy’s Zoe Chambers series to be cozy should know that although she adheres to many of the rules for cozies, this story is not cozy. Many of the other books in this series have been suspenseful. Many have been heartbreaking. This book is a step beyond. Besides her incredible and reliable cast of beloved characters, Dashofy has created some heinous villains in her other books, but not one of them is as thoroughly evil as the one she has drawn in HELPLESS. Because these stories are set in southwestern Pennsylvania, the weather is always a consideration and frequently a part of this author’s plots. The flooding from the hurricane in HELPLESS is a relentless menace, posing a diabolical threat on every page. If you have ever watched flood waters rise, you will recognize the feeling of helplessness it engenders. Devastating as this book is, it was truly incredible to see the many characters we’ve met over the years pull together and work in unison towards bringing the best resolution they could in dire circumstances. What a plot!
As a flood threatens the citizens and town, the day will be one that County Coroner Zoe Chambers-Adams and her husband, Vance Township Police Chief Pete Adams, will never forget. A woman has been murdered, her husband precariously hanging on to life and their seven-year-old daughter kidnapped. Follow along, hour by hour, as the search continues for the young girl. Pete and his team battle the rain, flooding, downed trees and a killer who is leaving devastation in his wake. Zoe is consoling the young father, her friend, as they await word of his daughter and his imminent death. She is also dealing with an assistant who uses her concern for the dying father along with the search for his daughter to claim that she is unfit for her job. As the body count rises, along with the flooding, will they find the little girl in time for her father to know that she is safe and to say goodbye? A rush from beginning to end! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)
The latest Zoe Chambers mystery focuses on a tense, gut-wrenching 24 hours as the remnants of Tropical Storm Iona barrels towards rural Pennsylvania. Vance County Police Chief Pete Adams & County Coroner Zoe Chambers-Adams respond to a 911 call. They find Zoe’s friend and blacksmith Danny seriously injured & pinned under an immobilized tractor. His wife Michelle has been shot dead & their 7-year old daughter Peyton has been abducted by their attacker.
Zoe stays with Danny as the rescue attempts continue, hoping she can uncover clues that might help the investigation. Meanwhile, Pete & his officers battle rising floodwaters, blocked roads & loss of communication as they frantically search for Peyton & her abductor. But the desperate man is doing whatever he can to escape & several more victims die as the day progresses.
WOW! This was an enthralling read and one of the best books in the long-running Zoe Chambers mystery series. Highly recommended.
I received a digital ARC from Netgalley and Level Best Books. All opinions are my own.
🌀A thrill a minute! Mother Nature & murderer rampage in rural Pennsylvania😳
Wow, what a powerful story! I was kept on tenterhooks throughout this thriller by an author I had never encountered before. The suspense and gut wrenching excitement started right out of the gate and continued unabated from the beginning to the tense climax. Flooding storms and destructive winds added to the unpredictability as Zoe and Pete, a coroner and police chief married couple in small-town Western Pennsylvania, work a tragic murder/kidnapping case together throughout one exhausting day. I found the plot excellent and these characters felt real. So much action condensed into one day but in a believable manner that kept me totally engaged. The bittersweet nature of the investigation's conclusion made it a story difficult to forget.
Recommended without hesitation. Dashofy is an author I will be following from now on.
Thanks to the author, Level Best Books and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
As always, I preface this review with the information that Annette Dashofy has been a friend for many years.
As she says in her acknowledgements, this entry in the series is a departure from the usual mystery plotline. The heart of the story here is Zoe and Pete’s frantic hunt for an abducted child and a diabolical killer who always seems one step ahead of them. Hampering their quest is the driving rain and rising floodwaters from a tropical storm.
One of my favorite things about this series is the small-town atmosphere. Pete and his officers and friends in other police departments don’t have handy access to all the latest gee-whiz technology bigger city PDs have. Instead, they rely on their long acquaintance with the people they serve and their highly developed sense of who’s not telling the whole story.
If you’re look for a change from stories set in the Boston-New York-Chicago-Los Angeles world, you won’t find a better place to start than any Zoe Chambers novel by Annette Dashofy.
What??? Is 5 stars all I can give this??? Annette Dashofy has added what may be the best installment in her Zoe Chambers series. "Helpless" kept me at the edge of my chair from the very first page. When it comes to a natural disaster, the aftermath is generally never, "And they all lived happily ever after".
Zoe's and Pete's strengths are cemented, not only as a couple, but also as professionals in their fields. They are determined throughout NOT to be "helpless" and not let anyone else be "helpless" in every way they can.
I always enjoy reading updates about characters from books past. (Even when they just haven't changed much from when we last "saw" them).
Boy, if you are a fan of Annette's books (and I sure am), this one will more than please. If you've been curious about her books, but have never read any, please start this series at the beginning, especially if you are from Western PA.
This is a 6/5! Helpless continues to push the emotional depths of Zoe Chambers-Adams.
Since first meeting Zoe, her troubled life is anchored by her horse that she fears losing to financial difficulties. We have watched her struggles, been cheered by relationships she has made, especially with Pete Adams. In this latest novel Zoe has to put aside her job as coroner to be an EMT and the support Danny O'Donnell needs during his struggle to survive for his daughter, Peyton.
The plot twists are gut wrenching at times as everyone was challenged by hurricane/tropical storm Iona. The descriptions made me feel the rain, the mud, the winds. The bravery of Danny to never give up was emotionally compelling.
Thank you Annette Dashofy for a novel in which your skill with words excels.
I volunteered to read an ARC from Level Best Books through Net Galley.
This one was a heartbreaker. Set over the course of a day in extreme weather conditions Zoe and Pete find their friend mortally wounded, his wife dead and their daughter missing. Who took Peyton and why is what they need to discover. The tension was non-stop and kept me on the edge of my seat but witnessing Zoe grapple with watching her friend try and hang on until his daughter is found really hurt my heart. While this book can be read as a standalone it would be much better when read as part of the series. I highly recommend this book series to fans of Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. Ms Dashofy has a very engaging writing style and this book is a stand out of the series. Thanks to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. 5 stars, but have tissues handy
I have loved all of the books in this series, but this one was exceptional! A monster rain storm is approaching when Zoe and her husband, police chief Pete Adams, are called out to a crime scene. When they get there they can't believe what they find. One person is dead, one person is seriously wounded and a child is missing. Between the destruction caused by the storm and the police force already being stretched to their breaking point this just adds to an already terrible situation. This whole book takes place during the span of one day, with time stamps at the top of each chapter. I couldn't put it down and couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see what would happen next. Definitely suspenseful to the end.
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Thank you NetGalley and Level Best Books, for the copy of Helpless by Annette Dashofy. When I first started this book I couldn't get into it so I stopped. When I picked it up again I had no problem jumping back in and it really gripped me. Maybe if I had known it was book 12 in a series I would have never put it down in the first place. Pete and Zoe are great characters and I liked that Pete was a Police Chief and Zoe was the Coroner and I am anxious to read the previous books to understand more about their backstories. While this book was fine as a standalone I am curious about some of the other characters also. The story was closer to a ‘cozy’ mystery than the usual thrillers I read but there was plenty of action! If you’re looking for a good series, try this one.
This was a well crafted story that kept me on the edge of my seat.

The whole story in this book takes place over a 24 hour period.
There is BIG trouble happening on Pete's patch. The murder of a young woman, along with the kidnapping of a young child on top of localised flooding would be enough to challenge anyone but the shocks just keep on coming.....
Beautifully written, great main characters and secondary characters as well. The pace is great, and the suspense just never lets up.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #LevelBestBooks for a copy of this ARC.
