Dragon Keepers #4

The Dragon in the Volcano

Rate this book
The Dragon Keeper series bridges the gap between MTH and Eragon or Harry Potter. It is solidly middle grade, accessible, and adventure-filled. In The Dragon in the Volcano, Dragon Keepers Jesse and Daisy, follow their dragon, Emmy, into the Fiery Realms. Intrigue, danger, and lots of crazy characters make the reading fun, as well as the wonderful relationship between the dragon keeper cousins and their dragon.

Kate Klimo spent her early years amidst the cornfields of Iowa where the winters were prodigious. Often, when the snows flash-thawed in the spring, she would find her backyard filled with the flapping, resurrected bodies of fish her ice-fishing father had stored in the snowdrifts. Thus sprang into her young head the unshakable notion that, all winter long, fish escaped from the rivers and magically swum through the snow banks of Mount Vernon, Iowa.

When she moved to the little town of Sea Cliff, on Long Island Sound, she met her best friend Justine in the Stenson Memorial Library at the main desk, where they often checked out the same fantasy writers. Together, they read C.S. Lewis, E. Nesbit, Edward Eager, and George MacDonald and embarked on a tireless search for portals to magical worlds, extending from abandoned Victorian mansions to the decrepit local five-and-dime to the sandy cliffs sweeping down to the Sound.

With her propensity for magical thinking and long-standing love of fantasy, does it come as any surprise that Kate grew up to be in the book business? But after over 25 years of heading up Random House Children’s Books, with the publication of The Dragon in the Sock Drawer in March 2008, Kate began to ease over to the author’s side of the desk.

Now a full-time author, in addition to numerous one-off titles, she has written the middle-grade series The Dragon Keepers series and the Dog Diaries as well the Centauriad for young adults. Under the pen name Bonnie Worth, she has penned over a dozen books in the best-selling Cat in the Hat Learning Library. She lives in New Paltz, New York with her husband and two horses.

This one was fun, they entered the "Fire Realm;" Emma became more independent and Jesse and Daisy were afraid of losing her; and their two old nemeses unite against them. Plus the new realm allowed for new concepts and creatures.

These books are perfect for Little Miss. We read them out loud to her. The characters are pretty simple, yet loveable, and the plot easy to follow. Danger never feels too real and everything is wrapped up promptly.

I would recommend this one for read aloud to younger kids, or as an early chapter book, especially for readers who are reaching that reading level pretty early.

Dragon Keepers Jesse and Daisy are missing their dragon, Emmy. They find the trail she left for them, which leads into a volcano, and they are transported into the Fiery Realm, where Emmy has fallen for a handsome dragon, Jasper.

I suppose it's not very fair for me to pass judgement on a book meant for such young children, but I think that even when I was the target age for this book, I had more discerning taste. This was boring, corny, full of cliches, bad puns, contrivances, and the liberal use of the handy-dandy deus ex machina. I admit that I picked this up as an easy read to satisfy a challenge, but it was barely worth it, and that was the only reason I forced myself to finish it. If I was a child it would be tolerable, so I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1.

It’s okay for very young readers, but Emmy is just too overpowered and every problem is always solved through some magical coincidence, with some help of a woman down the road that seems to know everything for some reason.

This is the fourth book in the Dragon Keepers series by Kate Klimo and John Shroades. We discovered this series by chance during a library visit and my oldest is enthralled. She read the first two book almost nonstop until she finished them. Now that we're almost done with the fourth book in the series, we are thrilled to see that there's a fifth book that has just been published.

I found the book to be a quick, entertaining read. It's a great series to introduce children into the sci-fi/fantasy genre and has some suspense and adventure without being too scary or weird. Jesse and Daisy, the main characters, are ten-year-old cousins. This preteen, sibling-like pair are brave and love to explore and they remind me of Jack and Annie from The Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne.

This story takes Emmy and her keepers into the Fiery Realm. This story was even more fantastic than the others, with the majority of the tale occurring in a magical world filled with gemstones and fire. The story is exciting and dramatic. I thought the idioms and word play were fun, but the celebrity fixation was a bit tiresome. Some of the dialogue was decidedly tweenish, but it helps show that Emmy is maturing very rapidly.

Overall, we really enjoyed these books and I can certainly see this series continuing past the first five books that have been published so far. Our oldest has raved so much about the series that our youngest is now wanting to read The Dragon in the Sock Drawer.

interesting quote:

5 stars as always for this beautifully written series!

I like the setting the adventure takes place in, the volcano! It's dangerous but pretty, and I never thought that water within the place could be more scary and tragic than actual fire.

Emmy has also gotten really big, and two of my favorite characters are back and ready to cause some trouble. ;) There's also a ton of new characters too, which I've really come to adore and I hope they will be shown in the upcoming series as well! (Especially Jasper.~)

Much better than the library story. I liked that Emmy has hit the teens - at least as dragons count it. Very well done and the reason she was crushing on another dragon was exceptionally well put together.

This book deals with the maturing of the young dragon, who, in true childish form, is growing physically faster than she is growing mentally. I really like that, in the footsteps of “The Book Dragon” Emmy is a voracious reader. Keep the books coming – they encourage young readers and I applaud that immensely!

Man! Kate Klimo is upping the anti! It is now beginning to cost the cousins to be good keepers! Wow! It is no longer just fun and games!

This whole adventure started with a bored dragon! The poor dragon was left home alone with no true (healthy) entertainment, of course she is going to run off. One must always attempt to keep their "pets" mentally stimulated.

Didn't realize that "The Dragon in the Sock Drawer" has become a series. I picked this up and enjoyed it in an evening; I'll go back for #2 and #3 in the series. Some very inventive elements but very readable and not too sophisticated.

IT WAS REALLY GOOD! My favorite part was when Jesse dropped the water balloon on Malachite's head and extinguished her.

I'm about to read The Dragon in the Sea. I hope it's going to be great!
