As a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's, I watched many, many Popeye cartoons. A local TV station had a ''Popeye Theatre'' program on weekdays late in the afternoon. This also featured Three Stooges movies hosted by Our Gal Sal, Sally Starr, for many years.
When my son came home and brought this book to show me, I just had to read it. I had seen the movie a couple of times, so this was a definite read for me.
This book which chronicles the making of the film was very well done and is loaded with on the set pictures. It told of the rigorous process of putting a movie together from start to finish. Such planning!
In effect this is the "making of" featurette that should be on the DVD edition of the musical Popeye, but isn't. Some interesting insights into Robert Altman's process and how he assembled this movie. I would have enjoyed seeing more about how Jules Feiffer developed the script and what things he pulled from E.C. Segar's comic strip and from other sources.
Promotional paperback extended with 'more than 200 photographs!' is a very quick read with some interesting tidbits. A slim peek into the genesis of the project, events of production, and Altman's improvisatory process. The main takeaway? Avoid filming on location!
