It’s April 2061. The UK and the world has been through thirty years of strict controls to combat runaway climate change. It’s a dystopian world, where there is little fun– it’s hard work and has been for all of 14-year-old Amber’s life. She knows little else but this little commune in the corner of south-west London.
Yet things are finally improving. Tonight, as curfew is relaxed, Amber and her Dad are watching her first ever (eco-friendly) fireworks display. It’s a party atmosphere at the riverside – a ‘gift’ of the Government - and Amber is captivated. But then, she sees a firework travelling downwards at great speed, like a missile slicing into the River Thames. Was it really a firework? Going the wrong way? Nobody else appears to have seen it. So, she checks it out and spots something shimmering just beneath the surface. Something unlike anything she's ever seen before.
A homeless boy called Bo – one of the Outsiders – approaches her. He also spotted it and both of them very quickly come to the conclusion that some sort of spacecraft has landed in the Thames and only they know about it. At least that’s what they think.
That same evening, Amber comes face to face with an alien form in her bathroom - an alien, Amber soon learns, that has crash-landed on Earth and needs her help to get her home to Neptune - nearly three BILLION miles away! A daring plan is put into action to launch this alien - Blue - back into space for a rendezvous with a COMET, a comet that will take her right back home.
Amber is risking everything – arrest, the loss of her home, the disgrace of her family. Can she trust the Outsiders ? Why does Blue give her so much hope for the future? And is she possibly falling in love with Bo?
This is a story of bravery and hope. Of a fearless teenage girl, determined to do what’s right against the odds.
Of a planet and human civilisation emerging from a nightmare…
Review for 'The Neptune Girl' by Nick Lloyd-Davies.
This may be the first book we have read by this fantastic author although it certainly wont be our last!!
This absolutely fantastic book may be aimed at children and young adults with the age rating Amazon has given being 8-18 but, sadly, at the age of 39 I am no longer classed as a child or even as a young adult but I absolutely loved it!! I would read it to my 13 year old son Malaki and we would both take turn reading a chapter each. We would both also read it on our own. In this fun and adventure filled book Nick transports the readers to the year 2061 where the World is different to the one we know. Everyone now lives in communes unless you are an "Outsider". We meet Amber who is 14 years old and is watching the first firework display in many many years, an eco friendly one due to pollution levels, when she sees something land in the Thames. When she goes to explore she meets "Outsider" Bo. Those in communes are not meant to socialise with "Outsiders" as they are commonly known as trouble, thief's and worse. Amber and Bo have both spotted the same thing in the river and after she runs home a strange experience in her bathroom leaves her returning to the scene the next day. She sees Bo again and they get talking about what they have seen. It turns out that the object is a spacecraft and the alien inside needs help to get home to Neptune. They call the alien Blue due to her colour and Amber and Bo along with the help of Bo's family try to work out a way to get Blue back to her home planet. However, when the police discover the spaceship an award is put out for any information. Can Amber trust Bo and his family? Will Blue ever manage to return home? Well, grab your copy of this exciting book today to find out for yourself. Regardless of your age I can guarantee that you will not regret it!! With a storyline ram packed with friendship, communities, science fiction, fun, family, drama, adventure, dystopia, climate change, danger, secrets and so much more what are you waiting for? One of the things that i thought was fantastic about this book is how Nick has created this futuristic planet in a way where our actions polluting the environment has affected the whole World and changed lives forever. I am a huge fans of educational books which make both children and adult think about the planet or other topics and Nick has included the important topic of pollution in this story but done it in a fun way which both shows the impact of pollution makes on the planet but also a fun and adventurous storyline. The other thing that I loved about this story in particular is that it teaches children to be kind to everyone. In this book the "Outsiders" are basically treated like dangerous criminals all because they do not live in the communes yet they all joined together to help Blue get home and even put themselves in danger to help which really goes to show that nobody should be so quickly judged. The book is written in a way where it feels like you are with Amber and Bo while trying to get Blue back home which we really enjoyed!! I absolutely loved the book and although we tried to limit it to a couple of chapters a night we ended up going way over as we both just really wanted to know what was going to happen next!! I was a bit naughty at times and even read on after I had told Malaki he had to go to bed and although it meant I had to reread it or listen to it again when we read it together again it was completely worth it!! Malaki really enjoyed reading this book and we enjoyed discussing the different themes it covered such as the impact pollution is having and what may happen and how the communes were so judgemental of the "Outsiders". We both found the storyline to be fascinating, unique, fun, action packed and intriguing and we were both as hooked as each other! The plan was to read 3 or 4 chapters a day together but we ended up reading the whole book in two days as Malaki kept picking it up through the days as did I as we both really wanted to know what was going to happen next!! The characters are all well developed, intriguing and thanks to Nick's brilliant and evocative descriptions they they all came to life along with the scenery and settings. Malaki and myself really enjoyed the storyline which we devoured in a couple of days. However, if it had been reading it on my own I would have read it in one sitting of several hours as I was thoroughly addicted and invested in not just Amber, Bo and Blue but also the rest of the characters and the incredible and fantastic storyline and fun book!
An absolutely brilliant, adventurous and action packed book for children, older children, young adults and grown ups alike!! Brilliant descriptions, action packed adventure and much more!!
❤️ Overall a fantastically imaginative and immersive adventure book 💜
I found this a very easy read and very easy to get into. As a supporter of quieter and more eco friendly fireworks, I found this an interesting starting point. When the children are first introduced to Blue, I think it was a good subtle way of introducing to children and young people the importance of choosing to be what they want to be and not what others want when they discuss if blue is a boy or a girl especially in today's society where it is heavily debated what is right or wrong. Towards the end we finally find out what the crisis was that led to all of the regulations in place and it is very topical. Overall I found it a very heart warming story of friendships and overcoming divides.
