Kader Abdolah is the penname of Hossein Sadjadi Ghaemmaghami Farahani, an Iranian writer who also writes in Dutch. Abdolah has lived in the Netherlands since 1988.
He studied physics at the Arak College of Science and fled the country as a political refugee in 1988. Today he lives in Delft (The Netherlands), writing under a pseudonym made up of the names of two murdered friends. Het huis van de moskee (The House of the Mosque), catapulted Abdolah into the Dutch bestseller lists.
First book club of 2025! Some good stories, some less good. They're all written by people who live in the Netherlands but come from different cultures. Some of them come across so grumpy and complaining, or generalise too much from a few experiences, but there were a few that got the balance right. I liked Exmat the most, it was a good story, and just told a story of two people and hinted at their cultural backgrounds, without trying to extrapolate one personality onto a whole nationality.
