Fandom: Harry Potter -------------------------------------------------- AU. Yes, the old Snape retrieves Harry from the Dursleys formula. I just had to write one. Everything changes, because the best revenge is living well. T for Mentor Snape's occasional naughty language. Supportive Minerva. Over three million hits!
Some people may claim that adding works of fanfic to Goodreads is cheating, but it's a piece of novel-length writing, and just because it's not been published doesn't mean that it shouldn't count as a book.
Imagine if Severus Snape were the person who met Harry at the Dursleys and introduced him to the wizarding world. And what if Harry were then further sorted into Hufflepuff? What if his best friends were Neville, Hermione, and Draco, and they were actually from all four houses? What if Zacharias Smith turned out to be his arch-enemy?
This novel explores just that territory and does it extremely well, improving upon Rowling's often laughably ridiculous scenarios, or at least attempting to justify them. Brava!
A good fanfiction for people who like Snape, do not hate or love Dumbledore and want to read a normal fanfiction about friendship. If you like Harry to almost have a decent time, this fanfiction is for you.
A sort of Severitis in which Snape takes Harry his letter and finds out how he's being treated. Snape enlists Minerva's help and they make Harry comfortable there and get Harry all the things he needs.
I always wondered why Dumbledore or someone else didn't compel better behavior when he found out what wankers the Dursleys were.
I like how cranky Snape is, how capable Minerva is, and in character yet happy Harry is as a Hufflepuff. This is gen, but has a Severus Snape/Charity Burbage romance later in the year.
So the author goes into this knowing the idea has been done before, which helps. It's well handled here and, although we are about the combined length of the first two canon books before we even see the Mirror of Erised, it really works and I found myself enjoying it a great deal. Harry's genuinely a child, and you don't see that very often.
Very satisfying story. Really enjoyed the author's notes where they explain some of why they believe Dumbles is the way he is and why he might do some of the things he does. Like how they have the other teachers doing even more to trap and take care of Quirrelmort too. They also managed to write a Hermione I don't entirely hate...
Infinite fluff. It's just … mountains of fluff. Not even a good take on competent adults or anything, just "what if everything just worked out forever".
3.5 stars. It would be 4 without the chapters about Harry's possessions, the play and the club, which, honestly, were a slog. The rest of it was very interesting.
