The Goddess in all her glory! A celebration of important and powerful goddess mythologies from around the world.
This stunning collection brings together goddess mythologies from across the familiar, unknown, forgotten -- spectacular! Written by pioneering storyteller Sally Pomme Clayton, whose 30-year career has focused on researching female protagonists, these tales are conjured in vivid and poetic language.
The book includes information about the pattern of myths and how they are represented globally and revels in the female, exploring desire, death, and the female body. Journey from Alaska to Mesopotamia and visit ancient Persian and Aztec cultures, meeting Sedna whose fingertips become sea creatures and Persephone whose sojourn in the Underworld brings Spring.
This is the most significant contemporary collection of goddess myths and encourages readers to value the female, preserve culture and re-ignite storytelling traditions.
I purchased this book from a brilliant bookshop at bishops castle in shropshire. I was drawn to the cover which has the beautiful paper cut illustration in it by Sophie Herxheimer. Goddess’s and myth have always been of great interest to me and I have read a fair few over my years. In the book Clayton has put together a collection of stories involving the goddess, she splits them into 5 sections that we will recognise: the creator, the virgin, the warrior, the lover and the crone. We have stories stretching over the world and time, from Mesopotamia to Japan, Alaska to Wales, it is a real journey. I was introduced to goddess’ I haven’t heard of and some I have, and I really appreciated Clayton’s comments at then end of the story’s which would tell you extra information, like how these goddess’ were celebrated and one I really was happy to see was her explanation of the Irish goddess Brigid/St Brigid.
I found this a great book to dip in and out of throughout the day. It really is fascinating how many myths and stories have similar patterns and are echo’s of each other. It really does show how connected we are as a world.
i’m strictly agnostic until it comes to the various beautiful myths and legends surrounding the women of history, then suddenly i’m all for worship and prayer lol. fabulous collection.
