It doesn’t help that there are no enough role models around you or even in the world to show you that it’s possible.

Rating as a movie: PG

My rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💵👩🏿‍⚕️

My thoughts: This book has some low ratings because it's not focused on nursing and has basic financial information, but I think it's actually a pretty good book. Nursing is this author's career field and the culture she made her money mistakes on so clearly that is why she includes it in the title and within the content of this book. Honestly, I think the only thing missing nursing-wise was how to save on college through scholarships and Nurse Corps, employers with loan repayment programs, military service - a great way to make 6 figures and PRN or contract nurse jobs to supplement your income while paying off debt. I think the book is great for young people who haven't started college or are in the early stages of independence. I will be recommending it to all of the people under 25 I know. It may not be for a seasoned financially educated adult but it's great information for those who are still learning.

Recommend to others: Yes. It's a quick read you have nothing to lose.

Rich Nurse Poor Nurses is a practical, experience-driven financial empowerment guide written specifically for nurses who feel trapped in the cycle of paycheck to paycheck living. Patrice M. Foster addresses a widespread but often unspoken reality in the profession: financial stress persists even in stable, respected careers when money management education is absent.

Rather than focusing on income alone, the book reframes wealth as a function of financial behavior, decision-making, and mindset. Foster effectively challenges the belief that nurses are excluded from wealth-building due to salary limitations, presenting instead a roadmap centered on budgeting, saving, investing, and long term financial planning.

A key strength of the book is its relatability. Drawing from her own financial missteps and recovery, Foster creates an honest, non-judgmental tone that resonates with readers who may feel discouraged or overwhelmed by money matters. The guidance is framed through real-life nursing constraints long hours, emotional labor, and limited time making the advice practical rather than aspirational.

The book succeeds as an introductory financial literacy resource, particularly for nurses who were never taught how money works beyond earning it. By addressing common financial mistakes that have become normalized within the profession, Foster encourages readers to take ownership of their financial futures without abandoning their careers.

At its core, Rich Nurse Poor Nurses is about reclaiming agency. It positions financial education as a form of professional self care and long-term security. The book will be especially valuable for early-career nurses, mid career professionals experiencing burnout related to finances, and healthcare workers seeking clarity and control over their economic lives.

Review for Rich Nurse Poor Nurses: The Critical Stuff Nursing School Forgot To Teach You by Patrice M. Foster
Rich Nurse Poor Nurses delivers a practical and eye-opening look at financial literacy tailored specifically for healthcare professionals. Patrice M. Foster bridges the gap between clinical training and real-world money management, addressing a critical area that nursing education often overlooks. The book speaks directly to working nurses, acknowledging the financial pressures they face while offering realistic, step-by-step guidance toward stability and wealth-building.

What makes this book especially effective is its relatable voice and experience-based instruction. Rather than offering abstract financial theory, the author grounds each lesson in everyday decisions, common mistakes, and achievable investment habits. It’s a motivating and accessible guide that empowers nurses to shift from paycheck-to-paycheck survival toward intentional financial growth and long-term security.

This was an audiobook that came up at my library. Pretty basic financial advice, stuff you could read in any personal finance book. Some advice I quibbled with but that's just me. I kind of hoped she would have written sometime specific to nurses, leveraging nursing as a career to better finances. That was only covered in the last 10 minutes of the book though.

Disappointing, no new information and in no way specific to nursing.
