Spppppppp! That's a giant raspberry. That's what I felt like doing after I read this play. Complete waste of time. It takes a pretty interesting premise (what a medieval monastery will do to pay the bills) and turns it into slap-sticky community theatre fodder. I was hoping for something more hard-hitting, something Howard Barker-ish. Certainly wasn't this.
Well, I am about to direct it, so go figure. But it really is a fun show in the talk fast and don't let 'em think too much vein. A nice contrast with Opus, one of Hollinger's more serious works. I've seen both performed and found both engaging and well written.
This comedy set in the Middle Ages plays with monk-hood and the ideas of doing evil to do good. Mostly it's a farce with an interesting dark comedy bent. What makes it worth producing is the ending, when in the midst of their stumbling silly and grasping selves there is a moment of true belief.
