Finally, over! About a decade ago I became at peace with DN-effing a read, and have very very rarely taken that path, but having read less than 15 manga, I found myself ready to DNF this series, having never DN-effed any American graphic novel series, I decided to return to this and finish it off, and what a waste of time that was. If I can't determine/'read' the artwork I can't understand the story. The last volume not surprisingly is an all-out battle between Ganta and his surprising-to-many final adversary. The final chapter at least gives the reader a nice epilogue of what-happened-next. Anyhow, lesson learned, as this final volume only merited a Single Star, 2 out of 12. Conversely I have to admit I do feel a slight sense of achievement finishing a series I had al but given up on!

Man this is a pretty good story all around.
Amazing characters with unique never seen before abilities.
The whole idea is gold!
Even though i feel among all three manga series i finished this goes to the third position!
Its not as fast paced as we are used too from Japanese manga.
Its not as strong literally as Gantz or Berserk.
But really this is worth reading! i enjoyed reading it even though i took breaks here and there, because it felt that i can actually take a break not like gantz reading three volumes the first night ever!
The whole story when we get to know all the secrets and details and the hows turns out to be heartbreaking, the villain we thought all along is actually the biggest victim in the manga...
We still had an amazing villain in Hagire, he was genuinely so good, if you want someone to hate for everything that happened to shiro!

After I read the first 3 volumes, and reading the fourth, I got impatient, skimming reading some parts (new characters appear, but at the end they would have less significant impact for main plot) and jump through the last volume. The clue/info dump of the arch enemy is already clear on volume 3.

The characters and plots are standard for shounen manga, Can't say much about it. I have concern with the storytelling. The manga was written in mystery style, with revealing the facts/background gradually. But the mysterious arch enemy is revealed too soon, and additional minor characters for sub-plots are seems generated later to prolong the manga.

The outcome was seen from miles away. The second to the final chapter was so awfully done, it used every worst component imaginable. The plot was like from any other mediocre shounen, just filled with more blood, gore, and weird, edgy themes. Nothing impactful or meaningful. The setting itself was hard to accept as "possible".

It was my first dystopian manga!
The ending was perfect! Bittersweet, questionable (did Shiro wake up really?)/ The best ending choice for this manga. The plot, mystery and its reveal, characters and development, the neat and detailed ART... Definitely one of my favorite ones!
There were two-three plot twists, which added complexity and excitement to the story. Shiro and Ganta's story was heartbreaking, their friendship was somehow damaged but also beautiful. The ending was best for them. They are finally free...
I also liked side characters, especially great teacher and funny Senji, crazy and mischievous Minatsuki ( she is also pretty), his brother Yoh, Makina the Warden (that kick-ass woman!)/ It was good to see many female characters here in a shounen manga.
The artwork was done by Kazuma Kondou, which was really good and easy to follow. The characters also were drawn detailed and pretty.
Main character Ganta was angry and crybaby first, then developed into more strong character with help of Senji and also tragic experiences he had through. I liked his character, he was friendly, never-giving-up 14 year old boy who also putting himself under so many burdens for his age. Shiro is my favorite character, complex, cheerful and also bitter main girl character.
The villains of this manga was scientists. Yes, I admit that some scientific experiments are morally wrong, but hey, I like that kind of stories too!
So, Jinsei Kataoka is now one of my favorite mangaka. I recommend this manga for those who like action, mystery and horror, also dystopian fans.

TW: everything you can think of. Child abuse, torture, murder, suicide, transphobia, attempted rape, human experimentation

I made the mistake of accidentally deleting my review of this, but I loved how everything wrapped up and how the importance of navigating through trauma and growing impacted this heavy, heavy story.

Okay, I know this will be a controversial topic, but personally, I don't think Shiro woke up at the end. I believe that her little smile was more of a reflection of what she felt inside. Content. Happiness. After my initial confusion at the seemingly random and out of place nature shots in the last chapter, I went back to look at the pictures more closely, and when I saw the birds and the feather that turned from brown to white, I thin that it showed that Shiro and Ganta are finally free. And I don't mean the external "Yes, they are free from Deadman Wonderland," more so that they have reached a place of peace in their minds. That the horror of the prison has finally left them. That they are assimilated into their world and can be the "normal" people they always craved ever since discovering their "branches of sin." And this feeling extends to all of the characters. I think the overturn of the feather was the showing of the end of an era, a fresh start. New people. However, on another level, that feather which combined brown and white was a reflection, personally for Shiro, that her two personalities, in turmoil ever since the experiments, is at peace. So the ending isn't really all about Shiro waking up, it's about all of the characters finding their inner peace and happiness with their situation. And in this case, it doesn't matter whether or not Shiro wakes up and reunites in consciousness with Ganta. Because they are both happy, truly happy, and I think that's beautiful.

So yeah, a little bit of a rant. I would make it more detailed but I'm actually writing this analysis a month after I finished the chapter so I don't remember my initial thoughts all too much. I may update this little paragraph if I ever get around to rereading the final chapter. Till then, I suppose.

***10/10 would recommend. Beware of blood. Seriously, there's a lot of blood. So don't read if you cannot stand that kind of thing.

Can't believe after nearly a decade of owning the first 12 volumes I've finally bought the last one. Nice to have the full collection I guess.

It's good to see that there's a happy ending in it for some folk, especially after how grueling the majority of this series has been - it even gives Game of Thrones a run for its money in the 'central character deaths' category. Some things that were disappointing (for instance, clearly trans-coded character Chopin Sukegawa being thrust back into cis-dom in a 'trauma solved therefore queerness disappears' gesture - though I grant this is still better than the anime just not including her at all), and some things were just plain contrived, but altogether it is a satisfying conclusion to the series. Very glad to have finished my journey with it.

Would recommend, obviously assuming one reads the other books in the series first.

This series is my all time favorite anime, and now my all time favorite manga. I feel robbed that I'll never get to see the ending of this in anime form, but reading it was such a nostalgic experience. the anime got me into anime, and finishing the story makes me feel so good. Daddy Senji is my favorite character, and I'm glad he isn't a cop anymore💖
I guessed why Shiro implanted the shard in Ganta some volumes ago where there was some speculation on it, and finding out it was true broke my heart. but I do think the ending would've been much more effective if Ganta had just killed them both right there; I think the tragedy route would've hit much harder, but I am satisfied with the ending. although I'm unsure if it means Shiro died? idk I'll need confirmation ab that

the pacing is perfect, I love that we catch the backstory of all the deadmen and even the enemies too, it's just a solid fuckin story and no one can tell me differently. not to mention the amazing art style oh my god. these black and white spines look so good on any shelf.

I will never shut up about Deadman Wonderland and the Kingdom Hearts-esque magic this series makes me feel 🖤I can't even explain it, it's the wonderment mixed with violence, the magical aspect of being a blood mage essentially, I'm just in love with it all.

PLEASE GIVE ME DEADMAN WONDERLAND MERCH IM BEGGING YOU

With volume 13, we get an ending focusing on Shiro and Ganta - explaining their history. There have been many hints along the way that the two have a devastating past; with this book, so many questions are finally answered.

Story: The terrible history of Ganta's mother's machinations are laid bare as Ganta learns the terrible truths. There is a reckoning for Shiro and finally an answer to the riddle of the 'red man' who dragged Ganta into the whole Deadman Wonderland situation in the first place. Why the stone on his chest, why his powers are so unique, and Shiro's wretched egg connections are explained.

The author did a great job on the denouement: the ending is neither sugary sweet nor devastatingly horrible. As well, time is taken to bring the story to a close - with endings for all the major characters as well as Ganta and Shiro.

It's a bittersweet ending but works very well for the series. Everything ties up neatly but in a satisfying manner. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

My main problem with long series is that I often don't like the ending. This one managed to tie off all loose threads without making it seem rushed or shoe-horned. It just gave you enough information to imagine how the characters' futures will progress. It's not too detailed, but it doesn't leave you with a big Huh, what happened? I also liked that Shiro got more characterization in this volume. Before she always seemed two-dimensional to me (the stereotypical childlike/naive kawaii girl with a weird speech pattern, childhood friend turned into first love etc), though she is one of the main characters.

I didn't get the ending... Did Shiro wake up or not? I think she did? There was so much feels in this volume though. I loved it! I can't wait to watch the anime, I wonder how much better, worse or the same it is. I really admire Senji and Ganta so much. Senji is a really good teacher to Ganta and Ganta will never give up no matter what, and he always saves his friends even if it meant sacrificing his own life.

Deadman Wonderland was one of the first anime series that I ever watched, I loved the concept to it. The ending of the anime was a bit underwhelming which is understandable because it wasn't the ending, it never got another season to finish. That's way I wanted to read this and I enjoyed it. Likeable characters, a good concept, a really good manga series.

I don't know if I like how this series ended or not... I mean yeah, it KIND OF ended happy, except for what happened to Shiro/wretched egg, which btw was left way to open. Either way, all of Ganta's friends and I think his mom are all dead, and nothing will bring them back... :/

A very satisfying end to a fantastic series. It was not the ending I was expecting but it was the one I had hoped for. Everything was explained, no stone left unturned and it all made sense. What more could you wish for?

God, I love this story. I originally read it several years ago back in high school but totally forgot most of what happened so it was as if this was a first read again! The characters are all really compelling and I loved how the story slowly escalated its stakes with each new arc. I didn’t really like the romance — it was a romance of sorts, right? — that started to develop in the latter half of the series; it seemed a bit forced and unnecessary to me, even as bare boned as it was, but then again I don’t typically like romantic subplots in general, so... I also wasn’t particularly a fan of the main villain’s motivations in the end. Some of them came off as really irrational (spoilerish: my boy Ganta did literally nothing wrong, fight me) but then again there appeared to be a general theme of irrationally so maybe that was the whole point.

All in all, fantastic and fun read. I really wish someone would finish making an anime adaptation of it but it doesn’t seem like my wish will ever be fulfilled. How disappointing.

And for the record, Senji is hands down THE best character. What a badass.
