Sometimes having no heart is better than having a broken heart.
Especially for fairy godmothers—who, by definition and longstanding tradition, are heartless. Literally.
Plagued by a heart she doesn’t want, and didn’t ask for, Nerissa loses faith in Happily Ever Afters and all that Love Conquers All nonsense. She trades in her wand to become a wicked faerie, and agrees do all in her power to divert as many happy endings as possible.
Nerissa has a flair for curses—especially when princes are involved—and aims to ruin not one, but two, Happily Ever Afters. But the DIDs (Damsels in Distress) she’s working against are a little more resourceful than she bargained for, and whether she likes it or not, she’s the only wicked faerie with a heart.
A liability that could cost her everything she’s been working for.
In this book we see several of our beloved characters from the last two books. There of coarse is Nerissa, the now not so good, no longer fairy godmother. She has gone bad! Frax and Mirror are also back and try to act as her conscience. Even Mara is present.... in seed form. She has lost her hope and fallen into a downward spiral of hurt and despair. She has traded in her silver godmother wand for a twisted one that belongs to the WICKEDS. Myles the incredible is back again, as well as Pickle-Prick, who has called on him to do his bidding. Myles is now an apprentice to the mage council. He is preparing for his sisters wedding and working on his magic when Pickle-Prick arrives and sends him on a unwelcome mission to find a Rumor. Hmmmm, what could that possibly be?
The new characters in this book are Prince Havorshall, a greedy prince who Nerissa has turned into a dwarf. He is a grumpy little guy and obsessed with treasures. Then there is Farridan, Prince of Autumn, whom Nerissa has turned into a bear. There are also the DIDS in this book, Rose Red, who is the protector of her family. She knows some magic and is good with a bow. She also widdles wood to bring out the soul that is waiting to be released from inside it. Her sister, Snow White, is basically like the Snow White we all know, with a few twists. She cant cook, clean, or do pretty much anything productive. She talks to animals and sings beautifully though. Their mother Etheldreda was once a DID of Nerissa's as well, though Nerissa doesn't realize if for some time.
In this book, Nerissa, as I said before has turned bad. She had joined the WICKEDS and as such her job is now to cause chaos and keep DIDS from finding their HEA. Rose and Snow's HEA lies with Prince Havorshall and Farridan, so she turns them into a troll and a bear. They couldn't possibly come to love each other in those forms can they? Is seems that all the things that Nerissa does to try to keep the DIDs from their HEA, backfires on her. And in the end, they all find their way to each other and unite against her. Even Myles has found his way into their home by chance.
As Nerissa begins to try to remove Snow completely from the equation, Rose decides that she must protect her no matter the cost and sets out to find the wicked fairy and stop her. She, followed by bear makes her way to the fairy's tower and gains entrance by a bridge that shows up just before dawn. Though the fairy isn't there, she tries to find something that she can use to bargain with her, a seed in a pot on the table. But before she can leave, she pricks her finger on a spindle leaving only time to toss the seed down to bear before she falls to the floor. Little does she know that the wicked fairy has cooked up a special apple for Snow and is on her way to give it to her at that very moment. With Rose locked in the fairies tower and Snow lost to the sleeping death, can they ever find their way to their HEA? Well, I guess you will just have to read and find out!
This is my favorite in the series. I love the fairytale of Snow White and Rose Red, and this was a great retelling. The editing was much better in this book, and there were only a few errors that pulled me out of the story. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of this series. 3.5 stars
