Billionaire Bachelors #1

Wins the Game: Lucas

Rate this book
Celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the first book Melody Anne wrote with some new scenes and the beginning to the legendary Joseph Anderson, patriarch of the Anderson empire, and legendary matchmaker. There will be tears, laughter, shock, and joy as you read the best-selling first book in the Anderson Series.

Lucas Anderson isn't used to anyone telling him what to do. He's the eldest child of the infamous Joseph Anderson and was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. When Dad decides it's time for him to get married, he'll do anything to not make it happen . . . that is until he meets Amy Harper and nearly burns down the building with the sparks that fly.

Joseph Anderson is a man who gets what he wants, and right now, he wants grandchildren. Retired and restless, he’s decided it’s time for his sons to settle down, whether they like it or not. His first target? Lucas Anderson—his workaholic eldest son who has no interest in love, marriage, or the family matchmaking scheme Joseph has brewing.

Amy Harper has worked hard for every opportunity that’s come her way. Fresh out of college and eager to prove herself, she’s thrilled when she lands the position of executive secretary at Anderson Corporation. It’s the break she’s been waiting for—until she meets her new boss. Lucas Anderson is powerful, intimidating, and frustratingly attractive. He’s also less than thrilled about her presence in his office, having been blindsided by his father’s decision to hire her.

From the moment they meet, the tension between them is undeniable. Lucas is cold, demanding, and determined to keep his distance, but Amy’s fiery spirit and unwavering determination quickly get under his skin. As they clash in the boardroom and sparks fly behind closed doors, neither of them can ignore the growing attraction between them.

But Amy isn’t just battling Lucas’s resistance to love—she’s also up against Joseph Anderson’s not-so-subtle matchmaking tactics. Joseph has chosen Amy as the perfect woman for his son, and he isn’t above meddling in their lives to prove it.
As the walls around Lucas’s heart begin to crack and Amy finds herself drawn deeper into the Anderson family’s world, they’ll have to decide if they’re willing to take a chance on love—or risk losing the game Joseph Anderson is so determined for them to win.

A heartwarming and sizzling billionaire romance, Wins the Game is the first book in The Andersons series. Full of passion, humor, and the power of family, it’s a story about unexpected love, second chances, and the joy of finding a home in the most unexpected place.

This was a fast and cute little read that I liked a lot. There were a couple things that...irked me (shocking, I know)...but all in all I really liked it. I am a sucker for the , so that was fun.

Full review to come...maybe.

This book is so bad, it's hilarious! The extra star is purely for the amusement value. I knew it was a gem when the heroine shows up for her first day of work to "assent" the elevator. I could see her high-fiving the buttons with a "Yeah, let's go UP!" except Amy is too mousy to even speak up to a machine. She is just out of college at 24 (why she is two years older than the average college graduate is never explained) and she is the new executive assistant to the head of the company.

How did she get such a prestigious position? The recently retired head (these guys do not HAVE normal titles:) has decided he wants grandchildren and so this billionaire went alone to a job fair at this unnamed college, met our heroine and was greatly impressed with her "resume". The phrase is constantly repeated as if to explain why she is qualified for the position. I would be more impressed if she or the author knew how to spell or pronounce resume`. Anyway, she majored in "business" (another word used constantly without any concern for meaning) because she is desperately in need of security after a horrible childhood with her crackhead mother (who presumably somehow managed to stay clean for 9 months to have this brilliant, hard working daughter )

Anyway she and her new employer, Lucas, son of Joseph who went to the job fair, meet and experience that instant state of inamoration that only occurs in this kind of book. But of course they MUST not speak of it to each other or, Heaven Forfend, act on the urges. Amy eventually winds up getting invited to the parents' home where she is amazed at the luxury around her until she is stunned into stillness by the beauty of the great work of art she sees on the wall. And it's by her favorite artist! This kid would not know a Degas or a Renoir is she fell over one, so it's a good thing the masterpiece she spots is by none other than that revered "painter of light (TM)" Thomas Kinkade! (Misspelled of course, but the description of the cottage by the stream with the soft lighting is unmistakable.:) I swear I am not making this up. I couldn't! The family is greatly impressed with her sensitivity.

After Amy is gathered into the bosom of the family, presented with new car, luxurious apartment and all the other "normal" perks of executive living, she spends the night in a guest cottage on the premises. Lucas innocently goes to return something to her, finds the door unlocked and walks in only to find Amy just out of her bath barely covered in a towel - well, we know what happens, don't we?

BTW, in all this nonsense, nowhere is it ever mentioned what this multi-billion multinational corporation actually DOES! It's just "business". Lucas makes phone calls and dictates memos. Half the time Amy shows up in his office with a notebook (presumably a steno pad). Once in a while she remembers to bring her computer.

A reviewer on Amazon noted that the author knew nothing about business. In truth, there are whole vast areas about which she knows nothing. Those luxurious apartments? There are hundreds of them in the company owned building, all two or fewer to a floor. Mathematics and architecture are apparently also closed books. We've already discussed art.

Enough. To call the writing sophomoric is too kind, but we don't use freshman as an adjective. And I mean high school, not college.

Would I recommend the book? Only to those who enjoy a good laugh at, not with it. One of my favorite guilty pleasures is watching truly bad disaster movies. This experience is similar.

TWO AND A HALF STARS!

So, I have this dating sim app called my forged wedding (#confessionsofanawkwardspinster) that I occasionally like to play because really, who doesn't like having a choice of good looking guys wanting you to pick one of them to make forever happy? The game starts off with you travelling to Tokyo and looking for your "Uncle" who convenes an informal meeting with guys who apparently want to interview you for a job. Only that interview really isn't an interview for a job but for wifely duties. The game play is often disjointed and has beautiful gems such as:

At this point, you're probably wondering, what the hell does this have to do with this book? Well, for me, this book turned out to be pretty much a written version of this game.

Amy Harper is fresh out of college and looking for a job. Joseph Anderson, retired CEO of the Anderson's family multi-billion dollar company, hires her as the executive secretary for his son, Lucas Anderson. His main criteria for the job is whether or not she would be suitable as Lucas' wife and pop out grand babies for Joseph since he's getting on in age.

The writing was often disjointed (to the point where I really couldn't deal with it), and the transitions between character's POV kinda confusing. Within a single chapter, there would be at least five transitions between the two main characters which became frustrating. I found that just as I was attempting to connect with the character featured, the book would all of a sudden transition to another character which left me reeling and disallowed me to connect with the characters.

Additionally, this book would have been so much better had the author allowed for the story to unfold naturally. I don't want characters telling me that they have a heart of gold or that they struggled in poverty. I want to see it first hand, I want to experience their heartaches, their sorrow, their pain, I want to connect with the characters. I don't want an information dump and be expected to take it as it is. Which is a pity seeing as this had the type of storyline that really appealed to me and I went into it fully expecting to at least four star it.

Why did I finish this? I knew after half an hour I wasn't enjoying it and I kept going thinking it must get better. It didn't. Lacking in plot, characterisation and editing. I liked the idea of the plot, but it was too jumpy, the characters didn't seem to like each other (even at the end) and everything was too convenient. Lots of typos and spelling mistakes and wrong words throughout.

No Condom? Crap, I'm Pregnant!

Or stop reading books that have the word Billionaire in it, RAR.

Is the author stuck in the Stone Age? Has she not heard of the Morning After Pill or is that something that doesn't exist in the book's universe?

Is our female lead so stupid that she doesn't or can't leave the property to drive to a CVS or whatever pharmacy they have in Seattle?

What kind of billionaire father goes to recruit students for his son's secretary at a career fair (which I assume is held at the college)?

So many questions. So little time. No, I actually have a lot of time. I like to highlight passages as I read on my Kindle app - but this time I actually highlighted and wrote notes for the passages. I feel like after this read my IQ dropped more than a handful of points. I only highlighted 12 passages but I think by the half way mark, my mouth is going :O!!!!!! to the point that I stopped caring so much about highlighting and more about finishing the book (while holding my phone at a distance as I watch this train wreck continue).

The book begins with Amy's first day at Anderson Corporation. By the time I flip to the next page, she is already humblebragging about her long golden hair, green eyes, and a well-endowed body that had curves in all the right places. *rolls eyes* Right.

Then Amy and her boss, Lucas, meet with a handshake. Their touch is so electrifying that it goes straight to his groin! (That is not going to be the first time Lucas's groin area straining against his pants.) Immediately our Amy is the super special snowflake that is going to change our workaholic womanizing billionaire boss! Whoopee. They can't even be in the same room with each other and be a little professional.

Seeing how she is described in the book, I'm not surprised if she's actually not that smart. And douses herself in this vanilla sent that makes him go crazy (in a positive sense) but it's hours later and it's still there. I feel bad for all the people who have to visit that section of the building who just drown in vanilla-ness.

(Can I complain about inconsistency? How the heck does Lucas know about Tom before they are introduced and at the same time he's confused at who this person who's hugging Amy. The writing in the book makes me want to toss the book into the deep ocean but c'mon editors - you're paid to catch these things.)

(Can I also mention how much I don't like clichés? I mean, every book should be treated as a separate entity, but if you're using the same cliches in your book over and over again, each chapter is not a separate entity. If seconds are hours, and it keeps happening again and again, then I think both Amy and Lucas need to go to a doctor and get themselves checked out.)

I have a lot of feelings. There's still a chunk of the review hosted at readadultromance.com.

I LOVED THIS SHORT STORY EVEN WITH ALL IT'S DYSFUNCTIONAL CHARACTERS & ALL.
Ok, people this is fiction. Hello, make believe. I don't know what others are expecting but if you are looking for a classic or the great American novel you are in the wrong section. This is romance with a capital "R".
Amy & Lucas are thrown together in a working environment by Lucas' father Joseph. The former owner of the company that Lucas now heads. The instant attraction makes the two uncomfortable but they hold themselves in check. Till one night Lucas just can't. They spend a wild night together but upon waking Lucas is gone & she is unsure what to think.
After panicking Lucas decides to act like it didn't happen even though he wants to be so much mor with her more then any other woman ever. When he sees her he addresses her by Ms. & acts indifferent. She decides to play act the same game to his disliking. Meanwhile, Joseph is pleased as punch. To see the sexual friction between these two & the love within. It only gets better from here.
No, it is not going to change your world. Yes, there are problems with spelling & grammar. Yet, the family drama is endearing, the characters are funny & light hearted. I hope you will enjoy this for what it is. A father who loves his children & meddles in their love lives. In this there is the fun of a love story.

Short and syrupy sweet, The Billionaire Wins the Game, is too much sugar and not enough substance.

It's the story of Amy, a fresh out college girl whose had a rough home life, has no money and just secured a executive level job at a successful Corporation. The position just happens to be working for Lucas, oldest son of the Anderson patriarch, Joseph, who just happens to be the matchmaker between the two.

This story was a little over the top for me. It was totally predictable. As short as it was, it could have been even shorter. The author kept repeating the character's thoughts to the point that I just wanted the character's to move on.

Amy was way too innocent for the life she supposedly came from and Lucas was too arrogant and unlikable.

This is one book I could have skipped.

I have a feeling that a lot of the billionaire, trillionaire, millionaire, ANYTHING WITH AN AIRE - will have someone in their family meddling with their kids and wanting them to get married within a ridiculous time frame. That is this book and it was good. I ate it up guys.

In The Billionaire Wins the Game you meet Joseph Anderson, who wants to see his three sons grow up and get married. He wants grandbabies like any normal parent craves. So, in this book you meet his eldest son, Lucas who now runs his dad's company. He of course needs a new assistant so Joseph takes it upon himself to hire a sweet girl who he thinks will be a perfect match for his son and her name is Amy Harper.

Now I totally get that I spoiled a little bit about this book - but trust me it was good. I don't know why I've recently developed an obsession on these kind of romance novels, but they haven't disappointed me yet. I also find it kind of strange that I just read romance novels for my first day of this reading challenge/new year - but I will go with it because it was a really good recommendation from my Kindle.

I loved everything about Amy Harper because she grew up with a crappy life. She doesn't take handouts and works off her butt for anything and everything. So, when she meets Joseph and Lucas - let's just say they threw her for a loop because she's never had a good family and now she works with the best family company ever.

I loved everything about Amy and Lucas - even when they had to deal with one certain problem/lovely situation because they ended up really happy together. I can't wait to read the next book in this series because it's about Lucas's younger brother, Alex (who is the middle child). I loved meeting him in this book because he just seemed a lot more fun and relaxed than Lucas. I can't wait to see who is "perfect match" is. I hope it's just as good/better than this book.

I am very glad that this book was offered for free and there is no doubt that this will be the first and last from this author I ever try.
I only managed to get through it until the end, because I really wanted to see how many more clichéd scenes the author would manage to add to that poor plot and I was not disappointed, new ones come in right until the end. It first starts with a father buying a poor, innocent and hard-working girl for his son, she believes she will be his executive assistant but indeed she's only prepped for being his wife, .
In addition to that clichéd ridden plot, so many things are just off. The story takes place today, the boss is a youngish 30 yo man, and the only work he gives his assistant is to type some memo he dictates to her. And the funniest of all, it seems the author got confused between Executive Assistant and Executives in the company, like members of the Executive committee. All business-related events in this book was laughingly and ridiculously off.
Either the author understands nothing about it, but then she'd better not write about it or she takes her readers for stupid dummies and then, ...

I tried y'all, I really did to make it through this one. I moved past the clear over the top mommy and daddy issues the heroine had that were sure to result in many eye rolls. I got over big daddy essentially pimping this girl out so he could get a grandchild. I attempted to ignore the awful dialogue (though I'm hard pressed to put in to words why it so rubbed me the wrong way). I even suspended judgment over the hero's man whoring ways. But although I like alpha males as much as the next girl I draw the line at "How dare she tell him no when he was offering her a ride." *gags* How dare she? right how dare she make decision for her own life even when you just want to use her body to "get it out of his system" and get rid of her if she becomes an inconvenience. This is one of those fatal character flaws from which a hero just can't redeem himself for me. Overbearing, overprotective-these are things I can deal with in fiction to some extent if not in real life. But this went above and beyond what I can handle and still come to have any level of affection for the hero which is kind of necessary for enjoyment of the book. DNF

Really enjoyed this read ! It was quick and cute perfect for an afternoon at the beach read. Unfortunately I wasn't at the beach but I would not be against reading it again this summer! Looking forward to the next few books! Cute but very predictable. However, I only read for HEA's so aren't they all predictable in a way?

Lucas was a hot character he just didn't win me completely over he found his heart to late in the game for my liking. I can see others enjoying him though.

A man who is willing to take on responsibility, how could I not like it???

Update: I read the second book in this series and I fell in love with Lucas in that one... I guess he needed to prove himself to me a lil more! LOL

ITS REALLY REALLY GOOD!! LISTEN TO AUDIBLE EDITIONS VERY GOOD!!

I thought for a freebie book that I won the Jack Pot!! The Billionaire Wins the Game was very good. It is fast paced, good and interesting characters. The H and H Lucas and Amy are very opposites but well matched. Good hot sexy scenes between the two. I just love the machinations of Joseph Anderson the billionaire father of Lucas to get himself and his wife Katherine a grandchild before Christmas. This old but handsome and quite fit geezer is so funny with his matchmaking schemes . I just fell in love with him and the way he loved his wife Katherine and his 3 sons. Despite all Lucas an Amy did to stay apart they lost the battle to Joseph. He was one wise old man. I really like the story and I will read the next book in the Billionaire Bachelor series. I would have paid for a story like this one. I Highly Recommend you read its. Its a fun light romance and very sensually hot.

honestly if I could give less than a one star I would....this is the kind of book that gives romance novels a bad name! Not a clean read at all....I got it as a free read on my ereader and sadly couldn't delete it fast enough. I had only read a portion of it before I realized it was smut! Sorry but true.

Amy Harper just got the dream job she wanted right out of college. She got a job working for Lucas Anderson as an executive secretary. With this job she is one step closer to her future plan. But what she wasn't expecting after meeting her boss was being really attracted to him...
Lucas Anderson just received the reins as the head of his father, Joseph, company after his retirement. After his current executive secretary, Esther, who was his dads as well, told him she was retiring he told her he still needed her and thought she was going to continue for a while longer. But after Amy appears and sees Esther training her, he learns that she is still going to retire and the his dad hired him a new executive secretary. But what he wasn't expecting to be attracted to his new executive secretary...
But what they don't know that its Joseph's plan to start getting his sons married. Because what Joseph really wants his to have his house filled with grandchildren and Lucas is the first one he gets started with...

It was really a fun book to read. Amy didn't really have the ideal mom when she was younger and when her mom passed away when she was a young girl, she went into foster care. She hates to rely on anyone and likes to take care of herself. But as you read along you see how Amy learns to rely on others especially the Anderson Family and Tom, one of the Anderson employees.
Lucas is wary of women. The women he has dated has turned out to be with him for his money, power, or status. So he believes all woman are the same. But you see him learn to realize that all woman are not the same after he gets to know Amy.
What really made it fun was Lucas' dad Joseph. I thought it was funny how he is so fed up with all his sons and how long they were taking to get married and have children of their own that he decides to play match maker starting with Lucas. Though the other two of his sons were briefly mentioned, I am looking forward in reading their stories and see how Joseph plans to get them set up.

Written in 3rd Person POV, and damn! I love the writing style! It ain't boring and I was able to connect with the characters.

The plot ain't that unique and I've read novels with the same plot but still, it made me want to read and know what comes next.

Freebies, freebies, freebies. Why do you always disappoint me? *sigh* At least this book was better than the other nonsense freebies I've read this week.

I would have enjoyed The Billionaire Wins the Game a lot if the characters didn't try to rip each other's clothes off after only hvaing known each other for a few days. Or if the characters are neither a drama queen or an arrogant bastard.

The story was quite cute in it's own way. I hated the premise and how weak the characters were. Amy was way too self-conscious and Lucas was way too arrogant and absurd. I hated seeing how they both loved each other before and after the marriage but were too stupid to admit it to each other. Could've saved at least 50 pages.

I really started to like the heroine in the beginning of the novel, but once she was found out as pregnant with the rich guy's baby, I felt like she gave up her career a bit quickly since she just got out of school. I didn't like that she never mentions any friends, or the cute gay friend from work once she is with her rich sugar daddy. This was a sad mix of mistaken intentions and lack of communication. Sometimes, I wish these people would twitter or blog what is going on in their lives and there would be a lot less suffering and extreme life gestures.

I had to keep looking back to see when this book was written. It seems like an old Harlequin Romance written in the '70's.

First and foremost the so-called hero is totally unlikable. He's a snob and tries to come off like he isn't. The heroine is silly and comes across like she has no common sense.

I get the impression that this book doesn't think much of women because clearly unless they have a rich man in their lives they will live in some drug infested slums that he couldn't be caught dead in. I was going to read the rest of the series but after this one? I think not.

I've read this book already a handful of times. I've been reading mostly erotic romance these last few years, but it is nice to go and read some tame contemporary romance once in a while. I especially love this book, it always makes me tear up a little while reading because the story is slightly angsty. It is a great start to a good series, though I didn't really care for the 2nd book in the series or really anything after the 5th book (ok, so I only really liked Lucas, Mark, Trenton and Max's stories). Melody Anne also has another great series called Baby for the Billionaire, though I haven't read the last book yet of that series.

I think I really like this book because it reminds me a little of the Harlequin Temptation books I loved to read growing up where the . This is why I like to read romance...even though the story is the same it never gets old and it's all about the journey to the HEA :-)

ive never given a bad review but I can not understand the good ratings.
the h and H in this story didnt have a single positive interaction. he was constantly horid to her. blackmailed her into marrying him by threatening to take her baby from her. pratically demanded his conjugal rights. bossed her around. accused her of trapping him (which made no sense) and she actually loved him! no! you dont fall in love witj someone who you know nothing about, had no interaction with apart from when hes being a total dbag. so unrealistic and pathetic.

First book in a matchmaking dad series. It was re-published in 2012, and 100-ish pages were added, which IMO wasn’t needed. I found this painfully boring as the story crept on at a snail’s pace. Dad Joseph wants grandbabies so he decides to fix up his sons. First up is Lucas, his workaholic oldest. Joe hires Amy Harper as Lucas’s PA, because she’s the perfect love match. The majority of the plot can be explained with this quote.

I almost didn’t get my happy ending because of stubborn pride and foolish assumptions.

The pacing is SLOW… 20% for a kiss, 35% for sex followed by both backing away, and 62% to get the first real forward movement. Thanks to an Lucas’s is ok, a bit flat, and relationship weary because of his aversion to being used for his money. Amy was harder for me to get behind; she's confrontational at times, stubborn as hell, and tries to lie about her “situation”, and flip flops to eagerly accepting assistance to “I don’t want handouts.” 🙄

Bottom Line- I would recommend this for readers in the mood for a sweet-ish little/no drama romance that is totally safe. H’s not broody or cruel; his family loves and supports h; no real obstacles in their way (other than 1 scene w/ wannabe OW) other than stubbornness.
