One of the most beautifully illustrated books ever. My mom read this to us as kids and it's one of the few pure memories I have of my childhood. A really excellent gift for any wee ones, especially if they like animals!
This 1964 picture book is not a board book, but one printed on thick cardstock, the story is not terribly exiting but it is sweet. It's a great introduction to nature, woodland critters, and denizens of the pond. It presents friendly baby critters and beautifully drawn, colorful realistic scenes from the natural world. Like other good children's books, it leads by example rather than preaching. The main character (mouse) demonstrates social skills by taking an interest and saying hello to its friends, and teaches small children the virtues of intellectual curiosity and observing the world around them--something strangely absent in more naval gaze-y modern picture books that only exist to showcase the author's ego or bully the reader into adopting the author/publisher's preferred political dogma.
Sigh...I'm so sad that the cover of this book isn't available. I remember Dee-Dee and his adventures so clearly: "My name is Dee-Dee. I am quite small. I am a mouse."
An opening line right up there with "Call me Ishmael."
This is the first book I remember 'reading' all by myself. I don't know how old I was...
Ich habe nicht dieser Buch in Englisch lesen. Das ist mein erste Buch in Deutsch! Ich spreche Englisch aber Ich studiere Deutsch. Dieser Buch ist sehr gut.
I believe my German is sound. It is interesting to note that the German title is "I am the small mouse".
