Lewis is a former teacher working in a homeless shelter in Portland Oregon. He is surprised to see how similar his own life circumstances are to those he meets living there. By listening to the the stories of the people he meets, Lewis works to overcome the trauma of unfairly losing his son in a custody battle. He also sees the grave injustices further suffered on the homeless in his home town.
