Great introductory book for understanding how stocks work along with what the risk and benefits of investing in them are. Appreciated the understandable non-stock examples used to make the mysteries of the stock market clearer. Don't expect the book to tell you which stocks to buy, do expect that you will walk away with some basic knowledge on how to evaluate what you can afford to invest should you choose to do so, how to evaluate stocks and the demystification of common terms and acronyms (e.g., short sale, bear and bull markets, p/e ratios, efts, etc.)
What I was expecting to be a mild refresher on what I already knew ended up being a pretty novel spin on things I'd assumed I had a good grip on. Yes, chart-reading and technical analysis and swing trading is all fun and games, but this book made me actually sit up and consider fundamental analysis again after brushing it aside years ago.
This struck a balance between being a pragmatic and conservative approach to investing (there are repeated mentions along the lines of, "if you don't have a plan, you're not investing, you're gambling!"), and a fairly daring and experimental primer with explanations of more speculative derivatives like covered call strategies and one of the best explanations for shorting I've come across in a while. Definitely got more value out of this than I was anticipating going into it.
If you have been wanting to get into the stock market but are overwhelmed with the terminology, numbers, acronyms you don't understand, this is a good book to start with.
It highlights a lot of important investor principles but also educates you on things the more experiences investors can talk about without having to think about it.
The market can be scary to get into because it's essentially a gamble. Most don't have the funds to get started. However, utilizing some of the tips and tricks to get your money to work for you, you will be off to a good start.
I fully support mladjenovics instruction to speak with a financial advisor before you put your hard earned dollars into the stock market. However, this is a great book to read over before you even meet with them.
Overall, the set up of this book was easy to understand and not too overwhelming with the amount of information. It does repeat itself sometimes. At others, I wish there was a more in depth look at topics or ideas. But the examples provided are easy to understand and implement.
The last 2 chapters of the book are a generalized summary.
