An engaging dive into some of North America's wildest places. After a broad introduction, this coffee-table book devotes much of its length to exploring remote state parks and designated wilderness areas.

The photos of each locale are gorgeous, and there's also a nice written section breaking down the natural history, underlying geology, journey toward being protected, etc.

While the atlas is impressive, the descriptions do lack some of the human scale that's necessary to differentiate each wilderness area. We do get some brief quotes from outdoor explorers, but the settings can feel the same after a while. I also found the maps hard to process visually.
