Tina Modotti has emerged in recent years as one of the important photographers of this century. During her lifetime she struggled to find a balance between her political and social life and her art. A central figure in the Modernist photography movement, she documented the people and tumultuous politics of Mexico. Many of her most powerful images are modern in aesthetic but political in content. Her portraits range from hired studio shots of socialites to documentation of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo at a political rally. She traveled throughout Mexico recording murals, cultural and religious icons, women in Tehuantepec, and workers at their daily tasks. Modotti was a revolutionary in her political activism, her modern and high-profile personal life, and her elegant and forthright photography. The finest of Modotti's images are presented in this volume accompanied by an essay by Margaret Hooks, author of the award-winning biography Tina Photographer and Revolutionary (Pandora, 1983).

Tina Modotti (1896-1942), a multifaceted artist and activist, left an indelible mark on the worlds of photography, film, and social justice in the early 20th century. Born in Italy in 1896, Modotti’s journey took her from a budding actress in Hollywood to a pivotal figure in Mexico’s cultural and political scene. Her photographic works, characterized by stark realism and profound social commentary, captured the essence of Mexican life and the struggles of the working class.

Beyond her artistic achievements, Modotti’s commitment to political causes, including her involvement with the Mexican Communist Party, further cemented her legacy as a pioneering artist and advocate for change.

Om te blijven bijleren kan het nooit geen kwaad om ook al wat oudere fotografen eens te gaan bekijken. Welke invloeden zij gehad hebben in de fotografiewereld. Niet dat ik denk om zelf nog veel te betekenen in dit wereldje maar bijleren, daar zijn we wel fan van.
De fotografe die ik in mijn laatste boek beter leerde kennen was Tina Modotti.

De auteur

Margaret Hooks (1945-2021) was een Ierse auteur en journaliste. Ze is gekend met het schrijven van boeken over vrouwen, kunst en fotografie. Ze is de oudste van zes kinderen, was betrokken bij een anti-oorlog organisatie in Latijns-Amerika. Journaliste in Mexico in 1979, waar ze artikels schreef over de vrouwen in Mexico en Guatemala. Werkte voor enkele kranten. Haar meeste werk was echt wel gespitst op de vrouwen.

Dit is de fotografe uit het boek dat ik gelezen heb van Hooks. Modotti is een Italiaans-Amerikaanse fotografe, model en actrice. Op 17j verhuisd van Italië naar Amerika om dan negen jaar later naar Mexico te verhuizen waar ze actief lid was van de Communistische Mexicaanse partij.

Het eerste deel verteld het toch wel redelijk turbulente leven van Modotti. Zo nam ze het niet al te nauw met monogamie in haar relaties. Dit eerste deel verteld ons dus wie Modotti was als mens, als persoon. Door haar manier van leven kreeg ze soms veel tegenstand van de mannen in haar omgeving.

Het tweede deel neemt ons dan terug mee in haar fotografie. Studiowerk maar ook reportage-werk. Zo nam ze honderden foto’s van murals in Mexico-city. Door de tijd waarin Modotti leefde zijn de foto’s allemaal in zwart-wit en daarmee leert ze mij ook wel meer over hoe zwart-wit toch tot leven kan komen zonder de afleiding van kleur.

De foto’s werden in het boek geprint op een mooie grote, met een tijdslijn aan de linkerkant met uitleg wanneer en waar ze de foto genomen had. De uitleg helpt als duiding van omstandigheden en het waarom van de foto.

Een interessant fotoboek.

Soms moet een recensie niet ellenlang zijn. Vooral bij fotoboeken omdat het dan snel een zeer technische bespreking wordt en ik hou het liever op gevoelsmatig mijn mening geven. Iedereen nog veel leesgenot gewenst.

This was a very good biography of Tina Modotti. This was a great selection of photographs that showcase her talent.

An interesting look into the life of a photographer and political activist. Her work, while influential, was unknown to me before this.
