This is the second edition of Two Penny Blue. Two women, two different centuries, what happens when they meet?Florence Howe and Dr Penny Black are both having a hell of a day on the 15th June in a house in Cambridge but one is in the year 1840 and the other in 2010. One woman wakes up in the same house but in a different century to meet the other. They have to find out why she is there and what they can do to help each other. Two Penny Blue is a 15,000 word short story about two women from two different centuries and what happens when they meet. You may also like the chilling ghost story novella 'The Listening Post' by the same author and the full length novel 'The Ghost Hunters Club.' Also new out, a crime novel entitled 'The Policeman Who Was Afraid of the Dark'.
I first started writing fiction during the summer holidays in 2009 whilst working in education. During the evening I am a martial artist where I am currently a 2nd Dan black belt in taekwondo. Prior to 2009 I spent several years writing for martial arts websites and magazines interviewing some of the country's most prominent martial artists but made the switch over to fiction after several hundred articles and having several ideas for fiction I wanted to explore.
I love a classic ghost story as you will read in 'The Listening Post' but I like to keep my tongue in my cheek as well in 'Two Penny Blue'.
New novel just out, 'The Policeman Who Was Afraid of the Dark'
Also, a full length novel where three women hunt for spooks, men and a few other spirits besides in 'The Ghost Hunters Club'.
‘Two Penny Blue’ is a wonderfully compelling story with a highly entertaining plot! This book, with its short length and captivating quality, will have you rushing through the pages and will not take too long to read. I wholeheartedly loved this story - it was beautifully written, surprising, and I was able to connect with it in ways I could not have imagined. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a short, enjoyable, entertaining read- I assure it will not disappoint!
This shortish story deserves every one of the five stars I've awarded. First the format & grammar are impeccable which isn't always easy to get right when you're editing your own work. The story entertained and informed, and the characters engaged immediately - something that's vital in a short story! The story deals with two very different women from different centuries who meet by chance in the same house. Both women have serious potentially life changing problems to deal with. I particually enjoyed the Victorian's point of view as she grappled with the wonders of 21st century life. The author manages to add a touch of humour in a couple of places without deviating from the main issues. I can't give too much away obviously, but I throughly enjoyed this story and it left me with a feeling of satisfication and a slight prickling behind the eyes. I look forward to reading more from this author and recommend this little miniature gem whole heartedly.(less)
A lovely little book, quite short but intriguing! 2 women in different centuries meet in the living room of the house they both live in. Of course there is a reason but I won’t tell you what it is, you will have to read it yourselves!!
Well-written and well-paced, tight and sound. I got into this really quickly and, although I suspected how the situation would be resolved, I didn't get it exactly right- which was actually a pleasant surprise! The characters are fleshed out nicely with enough detail to make them believable without an "info-dump" to bog the story down. I was aware, as I was reading, that I was emotionally invested in Penny and Florence's happy ending, and whizzed through the ending chapters to make sure they got there safely. 'Phew!'
A lovely quick read (I finished in a couple of hours) to enjoy and be engrossed in while your cup of tea goes cold.
A fairly entertaining short story, with a (sadly) predictable ending. When Florence Howe goes to sleep in 1840, she wakes up to find herself 2010. Years apart from her friends and family, it's up to Florence and Dr Penny Black to discover why she's been transported to the future, and how to get back home.
This was heading for '3 Stars' until the final third, where I felt it picked up a lot, as I had seen one side of the twist coming (the pills) but not the other side (the stamps) so I did get a surprise at the end that I wasn't expecting.
