P. C. Kuttikrishnan, popularly known by his penname Uroob (Malayalam: ഉറൂബ്; 1915 – 1979) was a famous Malayalam writer from Kerala state, South India. He along with writers like Basheer, Thakazhi, Kesavadev, and Pottekkatt formed the progressive writers in Malayalam during the twentieth century. Uroob is a recipient of Kendra Sahithya Academy Award (Malayalam) for his novel Sundarikalum Sundaranmarum

Ummaachu (Beloved) is a novel written by famous Malayalam writer Uroob (P.C. Kuttikrishnan). Uroob (1915 – 1979) was considered as one of the most important among the progressive writers in Kerala, along with Vaikom Mohammed Basheer, Thakazhi Shivashankara Pillai, Karoor Neelakanta Pillai, S.K. Pottekkatt, and Keshava Dev. As most writers of the period, his writings portrayed the life of the people of Kerala during the time of Independent Struggle, including the social, political and cultural dimensions. We can see the Kerala during the early period of 1950s, especially in a novel like Ummaachu.
Ummaachu is predominently a love story, or stories covering generations. In the first generation, the protagonist Ummaachu is in love with Mayan, who has no social status, income, and he is an orphan. Due to family pressure, she is forced to marry Beeran, another childhood friend of Ummaachu. Beeran is the only son of a wealthy man, so Ummaachu’s family cannot think otherwise, except but to marry off her with the wealthy scion. However, her mind already accepted Beeran, but as she is a woman who has no voice in the family, she marries Beeran. Beeran leaves the village soon after the marriage and became a wealthy man in Wayanad, Malabar. He comes back after a few years and meets Ummaachu. He finds that he still has a place in her heart, which makes him in an ecstatic mindset, and as a result, he kills Beeran at night. Later, he gets married with Ummaachu, and accepts Abdu, son of Beeran in Ummaachu, as his own son. He with the help of his close associate Chaappunni Nair, manages to build a happy home there, and he has two boys in Ummaachu, Marakkar and Hydrose. In his later life, in old age, he feels guilty over the murder of Beeran and commits suicide.
Another love story that can be seen in the novel is between Abdu, elder son of Ummaachu and Chinnammu, daughter of Chaappunni Nair. This narration shows the bold stand of the author as having an affair between a Muslim man and a Hindu woman even in literature can create a hostile reaction from the readers in a sensitive place such as Kerala, where even now the issue of “love jihad” spurs controversy. However, as the predominant concern of the novelist is the importance of strong relationships among human beings irrespective of caste, creed and religion, this twist is unavoidable. This in a way shows the nationalist concerns of the author, that of an India where human relationship is built based on human feelings and concerns rather than religion. This idea is further developed as Abdu became an active participant of Congress party and in the assertion of Chinnammu that “we are not against people”.

The novel further explores the life of people in Kerala during the 1950s. The inequalities and superstitions in the life of both Hindus and Muslims are shown in the work. It is a Kerala where inequalities in the name of caste can be seen, where women were being out casted, where polygamy was prevalent.

Apart from the nationalist concerns of the author, powerful critique of social injustice, the novelist also narrated the intricate mental struggle each character has gone through. Ummaachu at first is forced to marry a man whom she doesn’t love, and later she gets married with the man who killed her husband. This situation puts her in a difficult situation as a struggle goes on between Abdu, her son in the first marriage and her husband, Mayan. She cannot leave Abdu or Mayan. The condition of Abdu is also filled with emotional turmoil. He has to live with the man who killed his father, a Hamlet like situation. The same ‘to be or not to be’ question can be seen here. Due to the emotional trauma, Mayan commits suicide. Again, Ummaachu has to see the ‘cold war’ between her sons, Abdu on the one hand and Marakkar and Abdu on the other.

The language used to narrate the novel is also of greater importance. Any writer who wants to narrate the story of Muslim community in Kerala will face this challenge, the challenge of selecting the language, as the dialect used by the Muslim community in Kerala is in contrast with other regions, or communities. I am of the opinion that the linguistic difference is based on the geographical difference rather than religious. Any native Hindu in the Malabar area can understand the language of Muslims. However, we cannot neglect the fact that a variant of Malayalam known as “Mappila Malayalam” was prevalent in Malabar. Vaikkom Muhammad Basheer was one of the rare creed of writers who got immortality by being able to record the features of this language variant. Though Uroob used this style in the novel, the determining style is that of Standard Malayalam.

Overall, we can say that Ummachu is a saga (a narrative telling the adventures of a hero or a family) of a woman who determined to change her destiny by questioning the dogmas of the society.

Ummachu, written by Uroob, which is the penname of Malayalam author Parutholli Chalappurathu Kuttikrishnan, deals with the life of three children in pre-Independent rural Kerala. Growing up as childhood friends, the children, Maayan, Beeran and the titular Ummachu, go through love, hate, loss, crime, regret, acceptance, joy, remorse, and a final resigned recognition of the life they wrought.

All the while time and age stops for no one, and their children grow into adults, coming into their own conflicts; all in the backdrop of the independence movement.

Ummachu & Mayan are in love; but circumstances prevent them from being together. Circumstances cause Ummachu to be stuck in a loveless marriage with Beeran who comes from a wealthy family. Feeling betrayed, Mayan leaves the land, to look for peace and to forget Ummachu. This is the main crux of the story, one which drives much of the events which occur afterwards.

I felt in this book, elements of Dostoevsky's 'Crime & Punishment'. Maayan who commits a horrible crime of murdering Beeran for love, and Ummachu who chooses to remain silent of her husband's murderer for this same love, come to suffer the consequences of their sin, and are for their whole life tormented from it. Despite earning affluence due to their efforts, being able to finally be together, or having two children, neither of them are able to properly enjoy their time together. For the monument of their crime is ever present in between them, in form of Abdu, Ummachu's firstborn from Beeran, who also became the unfortunate witness to his father's murder.

Through him, the couple are made to suffer and relive the sin that they had perpetuated. And Abdu himself is in a fragile state of mind as he grows up; being forced to live under the same roof as his father's murderer, who is also now his mother's husband, and is disgusted at the prospect of having to call him 'Dad'.

Uroob uses the native Malayalam dialect prevalent in the Malabar, to compose his prose. Many of the terms would be difficult to decipher, even to native speakers. But it has the characteristic flow, and simplicity which was common for the writers of the time.

As expected of the time, the plot is pretty straight forward, without any gimmicks. But the narrative itself is a vehicle to carry the passage of time, and how certain actions and their repercussions echo across one's life. Beeran dies, not knowing the motive of his murderer, likely spending his final moments wondering why his best friend would do this to him. Maayan dies, decades later, alone in the woods, having come to realize that, despite everything he's done, he will never have the life that he envisioned, and he would never be unburdered by his crime, to even hope for a happy ending. Ummachu lives on, as a shadow of her former self, devoid of happiness, and in old age, somehow finding some closure in caring for the youngest generation of her family.

All the while time and age marches on, uncaring of the human condition.

സാധാരണക്കാരുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ സത്യസന്ധമായ ആവിഷ്കാരമാണ് ഉമ്മാച്ചു എന്ന ഈ നോവൽ. മലബാറിന്റെ ഗ്രാമീണ സൗന്ദര്യം ഈ നോവലിൽ തെളിഞ്ഞു നിൽക്കുന്നു. ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റേയും ബീരാന്റേയും മായന്റേയും ബാല്യത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് കഥ ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. അവരുടെ വളർച്ചകളിലൂടെയും തളർച്ചകളിലൂടെയും കടന്നു പോകുന്നതിനൊപ്പം സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ മാറ്റങ്ങളും അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. മായനെ സ്നേഹിക്കുകയും ബീരാനെ വിവാഹം കഴിക്കേണ്ടി വരികയും ചെയ്ത ഉമ്മാച്ചു ജീവിതസാഹചര്യങ്ങളെ കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യുന്ന രീതി വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ്. ചാപ്പുണ്ണി നായരും ഉമ്മാച്ചുവും തമ്മിലുള്ള സൗഹൃദമാണ് ഏറ്റവും കൂടുതൽ ആകർഷിക്കുക.

Why! Why!!! Why don’t I hear the name Uroob as much as I hear MT, Basheer, Mukundan, and the likes?!

Reading Ummachu didn’t feel like reading a book. it felt like like walking through the very world Uroob had created word by word, one character at a time..

One of the strongest aspects of the novel for me was the way the characters were written. Especially Ummachu, Mayan, and Chinnammu. Their arcs were layered, human, and heartbreakingly real. I loved how Uroob didn’t rush their development; instead, he let their growth unfold naturally against the backdrop of their environment, their choices, and the society they lived in.

Another thing that struck me was the writing style, especially the use of heavy Malappuram slang. It added an authentic texture to the dialogues and the characters' personalities. The language made the emotions hit harder, and the setting feel even more alive. Even as someone who isn’t from Malappuram, I could sense the rhythm and flavor of the region in every line.

Overall, Ummachu is more than just a story about a village and its people. a handful of families and its members and how their lives get intermingled to become one. It’s about love, loss, resilience, and the putting up with the quiet tragedies of life.

I am glad that the 'Malayali Readers CLub' picked this as one of the book of the month. Otherwise I might have postponed reading this for a while.

ബഷീറിൻ്റെ പ്രേമലേഖനം എന്ന പോലെ ഉറൂബിൻ്റെ ഉമ്മാച്ചു എന്ന് കേൾക്കാത്തവർ വിരളമായിരിക്കും. അത്രമേൽ പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഒരു നോവലാണ് ഉമ്മാച്ചു. ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിൻ്റേതു പോലെ ബീരാൻ്റെയും മായൻ്റെയും ചാപ്പുണ്ണി നായരുടെയും ചിന്നമ്മുവിൻ്റെയും അബ്ദുവിൻ്റെയും ഹസ്സൻ്റെയും എല്ലാം കഥ കൂടിയാണ് ഉമ്മാച്ചും. വടക്കൻ മലബാറിൻ്റെ പഴയകാല ഗ്രാമീണജീവിതം വളരെ ഭംഗിയായി തന്നെ ഉറൂബ് എന്ന പി.സി.കുട്ടിക്കൃഷ്ണമേനോൻ ഉമ്മാച്ചു എന്ന ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിലൂടെ നമുക്ക് മുന്നിൽ വരച്ചുവെച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. അവിടങ്ങളിലെ ഗ്രാമീണഭാഷയുടെ ഒരു സൗന്ദര്യവും നോവലിനെ കൂടുതൽ ആകർഷകമാക്കുന്നു.

കഥ തുടർന്നും മുന്നോട്ട് പോകുമ്പോൾ, ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിൻ്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലൂ��െയും ഒപ്പം ആ നാടിൻ്റെയും നാട്ടുകാരുടെയും ഉള്ളറിഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടുള്ള ഒരു പ്രദക്ഷിണം തന്നെ നമുക്ക് മുന്നിൽ ഉറൂബ് അവതരിപ്പിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെന്ന കാണാൻ സാധിക്കും. ഏറെ വായിക്കപ്പെട്ട, ഇനിയുമേറെ വായിക്കപ്പെടേണ്ട ഒരു നോവൽ തന്നെയാണ് ഉമ്മാച്ചു.

ഉമ്മാച്ചു. പ്രിയകഥാകാരൻ ഉറൂബ് മലയാളത്തിന് സമ്മാനിച്ച സുന്ദരികളിൽ ഒരാൾ. മദ്ധ്യമലബാറിലെ മുസ്ലിം സാമൂഹികചുറ്റുപാടുകളിൽ നിന്നുകൊണ്ടാണ് ഉറൂബ് ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ കഥ പറയുന്നത്. ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ മാത്രമല്ല, പഴയ ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെ സാമൂഹികവും മതപരവും ദേശീയപരവും ചരിത്രപരവുമായ പല കാര്യങ്ങളും ഈ കഥയിൽ ഇഴചേർന്നു പോകുന്നുണ്ട്. ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിനോടൊപ്പം തന്നെ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട കുറേ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ട് ഇതിൽ. ബീരാൻ, മായൻ, ചാപ്പുണ്ണി നായർ, ലക്ഷ്മി അമ്മ, അഹമ്മദുണ്ണി, ഹസ്സൻ, ആമിന, അബ്ദു, ചിന്നമ്മു, ഹൈദ്രോസ്, മരയ്ക്കാർ എന്നിവർ.

ഇത്തിരിപ്പോന്ന പ്രായത്തിൽ ‘വെള്ളിക്കോൽ’ ബീരാനും മായനും ഉമ്മാച്ചുവും വലിയ കൂട്ടുകാരാണ്. അവർ ഒന്നിച്ചാണ് ഓത്തുപള്ളിയിൽ പോയിവന്നിരുന്നത്. ആ പോക്കുവരവിൽ ചില കുസൃതികൾ, അടിപിടികൾ, പരാതികൾ, പരിഭവങ്ങൾ. ചേക്കുട്ടി മുതലാളിയുടെ മോനാണ് ബീരാൻ. വായിൽ വെള്ളിക്കോലുമായി ജനിച്ചവൻ. പണക്കാരൻ. അത്തറ്കാരൻ ആലി, അഥവാ അത്തറാലിയുടെ മകളാണ് ഉമ്മാച്ചു. സാമ്പത്തികമായി ബീരാനോളം ഇല്ല. ഇവർ രണ്ടുപേരിലും സാമ്പത്തികമായി പിന്നിലാണ് മായന്റെ സ്ഥാനം. പ്രായത്തോടൊപ്പം ബീരാനും മായനും ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിനോടുള്ള ഇഷ്ടവും കൂടി. ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ തങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതസഖിയാക്കാനുള്ള ഇഷ്ടം. ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ കയറിപ്പറ്റാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞത് മായനും. എങ്കിലും അന്നാട്ടിലെ ലോക്കൽ ചരിത്രകാരനെന്ന് ഖ്യാതി നേടിയ കിഴവൻ അഹമ്മതുണ്ണിയുടെ കൂട്ടുപിടിച്ച് ബീരാൻ തന്റെ ബാപ്പ ചേക്കുട്ടിമുതലാളിയെക്കൊണ്ട് ഉമ്മാച്ചുവുമായുള്ള കല്യാണം തീരുമാനമാക്കുന്നു. മനസ്സിൽ മായനെ പ്രതിഷ്ഠിച്ച് ബീരാന്റെ വീടരാവാനായിരുന്നു ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ യോഗം. തന്റെ സ്വപ്നക്കൊട്ടാരത്തിനുമേൽ കന്മഴ പെയ്യിച്ച കിഴവൻ അഹമ്മതുണ്ണിയെ മായൻ കൈയ്യേറ്റം ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഒരു കൈയ്യബദ്ധത്താൽ അഹമ്മതുണ്ണിയുടെ ബോധം പോവുകയും, അയാൾ മരിച്ചെന്ന് പേടിച്ചു മായൻ നാട് വിടുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. മായനോടൊത്തുള്ള ജീവിതസ്വപ്നം തകർന്നെങ്കിലും ബീരാനോട് പരിഭവങ്ങളൊന്നുമില്ലാതെ ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ ജീവിതം മുന്നോട്ടുനീങ്ങുന്നു. എങ്കിലും സന്തുഷ്ടയാണെന്ന് പറയാനാവില്ല. ബീരാന്റെ വീടും വീട്ടുകാരും പണിക്കാരുമടക്കം ബീരാനും ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ വരുതിയിൽ വന്നു. ഉമ്മാച്ചു പറയുന്നതിനപ്പുറമൊരു കാര്യവും ബീരാന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഇല്ലെന്നായി. ഇരുവരുടെയും സമകാലീനനായ തലവെട്ടത്തുമൂപ്പിൽ നായർ ചാപ്പുണ്ണി നായർ ബീരാന്റെ കാര്യസ്ഥനും വിശ്വസ്തനുമാണ്. അയാളുടെ ഭാര്യ ലക്ഷ്മിയമ്മയുമായി തന്റെ ജീവിതം താരതമ്യം ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട് ഉമ്മാച്ചു. പണവും പ്രതാപവും ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിനാണ് കൂടുതൽ. എന്നാൽ കുടുംബജീവിതത്തിൽ സംതൃപ്തി ലക്ഷ്മിയമ്മക്കാണ്. മായന്റെ അഭാവം ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിൽ എന്നും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെന്ന് വേണം കരുതാൻ.

നാടുവിട്ടു വയനാടൻ കുന്നുകളിൽ അഭയം പ്രാപിച്ച മായൻ അവിടുത്തെ ഗുഹകളിൽ സ്വർണ്ണം ഖനനം ചെയ്ത് തന്റേതായൊരു ജീവിതമാർഗ്ഗം കണ്ടെത്തിയിരുന്നു. ഒരുനാൾ ജോലിക്കിടെ തികച്ചും അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായി മായന്റെ ജീവിതത്തിലേയ്ക്ക് അവന്റെ ജീവിതം മുഴുവൻ അപകടപ്പെടുത്തിയവനാണെന്നു കരുതിയ അഹമ്മതുണ്ണിയുടെ മകൻ ഹസ്സൻ കടന്നുവരുന്നു. ഹസ്സനിൽ നിന്നും അഹമ്മതുണ്ണി തന്റെ ആക്രമണത്തിൽ കൊല്ലപ്പെട്ടില്ലെന്നും അതിനും രണ്ടു കൊല്ലത്തിനു ശേഷം ഒരു പനി വന്നാണ് മരിച്ചതെന്നും മായൻ അറിയാനിടവരുന്നു. കൂട്ടത്തിൽ ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിനും ബീരാനും ഒരു മോൻ ജനിച്ചെന്നും. സ്വർണ്ണഖനിയിൽ വെച്ച് ഹസ്സനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടിയില്ലെങ്കിൽ മായന്റെ ജീവിതം എവിടെച്ചെന്നെത്തുമെന്നു പറയാൻ വയ്യ. ഏറ്റവും അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായ ഒരു സ്ഥലത്തുവെച്ചാണ് വിധി ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ താക്കോൽ മായന്റെ കൈയിലെത്തിച്ചത്. ഹസ്സന്റെ വരവ് നാട്ടിലേക്ക് തിരികെ പോവാനുള്ള മായന്റെ ആഗ്രഹത്തെ ഒന്നുകൂടി ഉണർത്തി. നാട്ടിലെത്തിയ മായൻ ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിനെ കാണാനുള്ള അവസരങ്ങളൊന്നും പാഴാക്കുന്നില്ല. അത്തരമൊരവസരത്തിൽ ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ നിന്നും താനിപ്പോഴും മാഞ്ഞുപോയിട്ടില്ലെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ മായന്റെയുള്ളിൽ വീണ്ടും അഭിലാഷങ്ങൾ പൊട്ടിമുളയ്ക്കുന്നു. പ്രേമം അവന്റെയുള്ളിലെ കിരാതത്വം പുറത്തെടുക്കുകയും വളരെ മോശപ്പെട്ടൊരു പ്രവൃത്തിയിലേയ്ക്ക് അവനെ നയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഒരിക്കലും രക്ഷപ്പെടാനാവാത്തൊരു ഇരുട്ടറയിലേയ്ക്ക് സ്വയം തള്ളിവിടുന്നൊരു അപരാധം. ഇരുട്ടിന്റെ മറവിൽ മായൻ ബീരാനെ കൊല്ലുന്നു.

കൊന്നത് മായനാണെന്നറിഞ്ഞിട്ടും ഉമ്മാച്ചു ആ സത്യം മറച്ചുവെക്കുന്നു. വിധി ഒരിക്കൽ പിരിച്ചുവെച്ച ആ കമിതാക്കൾ വിവാഹിതരാവുന്നു. ഇവിടെ വെച്ച് കഥയും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളും വായനക്കാരായ നമ്മളും വല്ലാത്തൊരു പ്രതിസന്ധിയിൽ എത്തുന്നു. ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ പ്രവൃത്തിയെ ഒരിക്കലും ന്യായീകരിക്കാനാവുന്നില്ല. മായൻ നല്ലവനായിരിക്കാം. എങ്കിലും അവൻ ചെയ്ത ദുഷ്പ്രവൃത്തി നമ്മുടെയുള്ളിലെ നല്ലവനായ മായനെ ഇല്ലാതാക്കുന്നു. ബീരാനെ കുത്തിയ മായന്റെ കത്തി ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെയും മായന്റെയും ബീരാന്റെ മകൻ അബ്ദുവിന്റെയും ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഒരു കറുത്ത നിഴലായി എന്നെന്നേയ്ക്കുമായി നിലനിൽക്കുന്നു. ബീരാൻ ഒരിക്കലും ഒരു ദുഷ്ടനോ തെമ്മാടിയോ ആയിരുന്നില്ല. അവന്റെയുള്ളിൽ ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിനോട് ഒരു തരി പോലും സംശയമോ ദേഷ്യമോ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നില്ല. ഏറെനാൾ ആശിച്ച ഒരു അമൂല്യനിധി കൈയ്യിൽ വന്നതുപോലായിരുന്നു ബീരാന് ഉമ്മാച്ചുവുമായുള്ള കല്യാണം. എന്നാൽ ഉമ്മാച്ചുവോ? തിരിച്ചു കൊടുത്ത് സ്നേഹമായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും മായനോട് തോന്നിയ സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ വളരെ ചെറിയൊരംശം മാത്രമല്ലേ ബീരാന് കൊടുത്തത് എന്നതൊരു സത്യമല്ലേ? ഈ ചിന്തകളൊക്കെയും ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെയും മായന്റെയും ജീവിതത്തെ എല്ലായ്പോഴും പിന്തുടരുന്നുണ്ട്. ബീരാന്റെ കൊലപാതകം തകർത്തത് ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെയും മായന്റെയും അബ്ദുവിന്റെയും ജീവിതങ്ങൾ മാത്രമല്ല, ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിനും മായനും ജനിച്ച രണ്ടു മക്കൾ ഹൈദ്രോസിന്റെയും മരയ്ക്കാറിന്റേയും കൂടിയാണ്. കഥ ഇനിയും തുടരുകയാണ്, അബ്ദുവും ഹൈദ്രോസും മരയ്ക്കാറും ചാപ്പുണ്ണിനായരുടെ മകൾ ചിന്നമ്മുവും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന പുതിയ തലമുറ കഥയെ മുന്നോട്ടു നയിക്കുന്നു. പ്രായമായ ഉമ്മാച്ചുവും മായനും ചാപ��പുണ്ണിനായരും തങ്ങളുടെ വിധികളെ സ്വീകരിക്കാനുള്ള കാത്തിരിപ്പിലും. ദുരന്തങ്ങൾ ഒഴിയുന്നില്ല. എന്താണ് പുതിയ തലമുറയെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്?

മലയാളത്തിലെ മികച്ചൊരു നോവലാണ് ഉറൂബിന്റെ ഉമ്മാച്ചു എന്നതിൽ സംശയമില്ല. വായന വളരെ നന്നായി മുന്നോട്ടു പോയിരുന്നു. മലബാറിലെ മുസ്ലിം ഭാഷ വളരെ നന്നായി ഉറൂബ് ഇവിടെ ഉപയോഗിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. കഥയിൽ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പുകൾ നമുക്ക് ചിലപ്പോൾ സമ്മതിക്കാൻ വിഷം തോന്നിയേക്കാം, പ്രത്യേകിച്ചും പ്രധാന കഥാപാത്രമായ ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ കാര്യം തന്നെ. എങ്കിലും ഈ വിധമല്ലെങ്കിൽ കഥയുടെ ഗതി എന്തായേ���െ എന്നും ചോദ്യം വരാം. അങ്ങനെയെങ്കിൽ ഒരു പക്ഷെ ഒരു സാധാരണ കഥ ആയിപ്പോയേനെ. ഉറൂബിന്റെ കഥകളിൽ എല്ലായ്‌പ്പോഴും ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന് ഒരു പ്രധാനസ്ഥാനം തന്നെയായിരിക്കും.

കഴിഞ്ഞ നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ആദ്യ പകുതി ആയിരിക്കണം ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിന്റെ കഥ set ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്ന timeline. അത് വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഉറൂബിന്റെ കൂടി പ്രയത്‌നത്തിൽ വളർന്നു വന്ന മലയാള സിനിമയിലെ 60കളിലും 70കളിലുമായി ഇറങ്ങിയ സിനിമകളെ ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കുന്ന തരത്തിൽ ഉള്ള ഏഴുത്തായാണ് തോന്നിയത്. 50കളിൽ എഴുതപെട്ടത്കൊണ്ട് ഇന്ന് കഥപരമായി പുതുമ തോന്നില്ലെങ്കിൽകൂടിയും കുറെയധികം സൂക്ഷ്മമായ കാര്യങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടാവുന്ന മാറ്റങ്ങൾ അടയാളപ്പെടുത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. എന്ത്കൊണ്ട് ചില കാര്യങ്ങൾ സമൂഹത്തിനു സ്വീകരയമാവുന്നു മറ്റു ചിലത് ആവുന്നില്ല എന്നത് ഒറ്റ നോട്ടത്തിൽ മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞെന്ന് വരില്ല എങ്കിലും അത് എത്രത്തോളം സത്യമാണ് എന്നത് കൂടി വരികൾക്കിടയിലൂടെ വായനക്കാരോട് അറിയിക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നു എന്നത് തന്നെയാണ് എഴുത്ത്കാരന്റെ വിജയം. ഉമ്മാച്ചു മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിലെ ഒരു നാഴികക്കല്ല് തന്നെയാണ്.

വളരെ കുറഞ്ഞ വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ പത്തറുപത് വര്ഷം കാലം ജീവിച്ച ഒരുകൂട്ടം ആളുകളുടെ ജീവിതം വരച്ചിടുന്നുണ്ട് ഉമ്മാച്ചുവിൽ.

ചിന്നമ്മുവും ഉമ്മാച്ചുമ്മയും ആധുനികതയുടെ പ്രതീകമാണ് നോവലിൽ.

നോവലിനെ അതിൽത്തന്നെ ഉള്ള വാക്കുകളിലൂടെ സംഗ്രഹിക്കുകയാണെങ്കിൽ ഇങ്ങനെ.

Ummachu is one of those quiet, powerful novels that stays with you long after you close the final page. ഉറൂബിന്റെ ഉമ്മച്ചുവിനെ, ഉമ്മാച്ചു എന്ന നോവലിനെപ്പറ്റി കേൾക്കാത്ത മലയാളികൾ ചുരുക്കമായിരിക്കും. വായിക്കാത്തവർ പോലും ഉറൂബ് എന്നു കേട്ടാൽ ഉമ്മാച്ചു എന്നാവും മനസ്സിൽ തെളിയുന്ന മറ്റൊരു വാക്ക്. അത്രത്തോളം പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ഒരു നോവലാണ് ഉമ്മാച്ചു.

One of the malayalam classics. Lot of beautiful passages. I was surprised to know that the author is not a muslim. Muslim characters felt very real.
