When Fidel Castro allows thousands of Cubans to depart for America in the Mariel Boatlift, he exports the worst criminals and undesirables of his country along with them. To monitor the situation, the CIA sends infiltrators to Cuba-where they vanish without a trace. In desperation, the Agency turns to ex-Navy SEAL Dusky MacMorgan to go in and find out what happened.
Amid the chaos and deception in Mariel's savage underworld, MacMorgan must keep on his toes and off the radar if he's going to discover the truth without disappearing himself.
A series of books by Randy Wayne White, presaging the Doc Ford series. Doc Ford is much better, but I appreciate these books as White's early work. Neither particularly impressed nor disappointed. Quick, fun beach-type read.
I love all of the books the Captain White writes. They are all filled with history and adventure! They just seem to get better and better. You can see that he does a lot of research and anyone who loves Florida should read them all.

You're always off on a new adventure in a Randy Striker (Randy Wayne White) book, and this one takes you to Cuba during the historic Mariel boat lift. The bad guys are totally trope-y, the women are always beautiful, but the haunting thing is you're also inside the narrator's head and he always has fascinating observations about life and what he's seeing on (or in this case, near) the beautiful Florida coast. Another wild adventure.
I read this one out @ the beach - and it’s a perfect beach book for guys. The story is set during the Mariel boat lift in April 1980. Dusky MacMorgan is asked to take an agent into Cuba. The book is well written and pretty short. My lone gripe is that the ending was quite as good as the rest of the text. Still, I really enjoyed it.
I Thank you for your wonderful descriptions of SW Florida and what it feels like to be out in the water at night. Caring for my parents have kept me from getting back out in the mangrove bays, but reading your work brings it all back home.
Good suspense novel. Dusky MacMorgan takes Agent Santaram to Cuba's Mariel Harbor to retrieve a double agent during the Mariel boatlift in the late 1970s. Big twist at the end. Characters are larger than life: MacMorgan, Santaram, Westy O'Davis.
Randy Wayne White writes some fairly good books, but this is not one of them. The main character is a mix of Mike Hammer and Travis Mcgee. About the middle of the book it became slow reading and monotonous. Just glad to get to the end.
4.5 stars. My first look at Randy Wayne White’s earlier work - after having read all of Doc Ford’s adventures. Now I’m hooked and have to catch up on all the other “oldies.”
Another great book. Really enjoying these books. It's always interesting to see where Dusky is going next and whom he will meet along the way. On to the next adventure....
This is one of my favorite series, but this is my last favorite book in the series. There isn't enough action, the love interest is weak and the ending is sudden and contrived.
#3 in the Dusky MacMorgan series. MacMorgan is the hero of a quickie series of 7 thrillers written in 1981-2 by Randy Wayne White as Randy Striker.
Dusky MacMorgan, former Navy SEAL and part-time special agent, is asked by his handler, 'Stormin' Norm Fizer, to deliver, and protect, a CIA agent to Cuba during the Mariel Boatlift. The agent is beautiful and arrogant Lt Androsa Santarun. In Cuba he meets Westy O'Davis who helps him defeat the Castro forces and accomplish his mission.
Randy Wayne White writing under the penname of Randy Striker. MacMorgan, a fishing guide, takes a spy to Cuba during the Mariel Boatlift days when Cubans were being ferried to Florida by families rescuing members to Florida. The CIA spy is attempting to remove a double agent from Cuba in desperate times. Interesting views of the Mariel Boatlift.
Excellent shoreline, another fun read for a ex-pat Floridian.
There's great enjoyment found with Dusky's twists and turns while plots continue to thicken as new favorite characters are introduced for future stories. Good stuff!
These are the early novels are Randy White who character Doc Ford is one of my favourite. It's fun to see how he honed his skills over time. I would probably not have read another one of Randy Striker if these were my first introductions.
It was pretty good to read; style and vocabulary is not too difficult to understand. However, the author could have done better with more details to the plot.
