What did I think? I'll tell you what I thought: I laughed my a$$ off! I should be much lighter weight wise! I received an Advanced Readers Copy from The delightful, charming, witty, beautiful (enough butt kissing?) ever talented DAKOTA CASSIDY! I adore the ACCIDENTAL series with the OOPS girls, and of course big, foul mouthed Nina! When a caterer accidentally opens a bottle of gin at a social event, the last thing she is thinking about is a funny dressed, smelly guy to appear before her muttering gibberish and poof, she now inhabits his beer can, piles of dirty socks, cigarette smelly bottle. But there she is, and her only hope of getting out is the Temp working the phone lines at OOPS: a womanising crank of a werewolf stud muffin! At first he doesn't believe her, but he's mythical creature too, so why not follow through...but what he let's out of that bottle is pure chaos. Every attempt at wish granting goes wonky that Jeannie the Genie (yep, you heard correct: the Genies name is Jeannie)that the OOPS girls must help fix. And being tethered to a man who normally has one night stands with tall, stacked, blond bombshells with names like Lollipop or Candy Bar is making it hard for a door-mouse caterer and a tall, mouthwatering Adonis to do what each does normally...time and closeness can open the closed hearts of two lonely people...and then Nina blows in and blows up! Naughty, foul mouthed, bossy Vampire who calls 'em as she sees 'em. This book had me laughing out loud and left me with a huge smile on my face. Oh, there are so many things I want to SHARE with you, but cannot and have you enjoy this book as much as I did! It will be out next month...go get your copy PLEASE!!! You can't go wrong on this!
The Accidental Genie, Accidentally Friends #7, by Dakota Cassidy Grade: B
“I can’t believe you went and got morals. Did you shop online for them?”
Jeannie Carlye was catering another gig for a client when she decided to open a bottle of gin that would change her life forever. Trapped in the bottle Jeannie does what any girl will do google for help and comes across the OOPS webpage for helping new paranormals adjust to their new lives. Jeannie calls for help never expecting to be stuck to the sexy werewolf who got her out of the bottle and whom she now calls ‘master’ and grants wishes for. If becoming a genie wasn’t bad enough someone from Jeannie’s past is back and will stop at nothing until she is his again.
Sloan Flaherty never thought getting roped into helping his sister-in-law and her friends by manning the OOPS phones for an afternoon could flip his whole world upside down. Solan is now stuck to Jeannie, who is very cute but not for the rest of his life. As they try to stop her random wish granting Sloan realizes Jeannie might be what he changed his bad boy ways for. The road ahead of them is a bumpy one filled with magic carpets, MC Hammer pants and a whole heap of danger that they will all be lucky to survive.
The Accidental Genie is my second time diving into the crazy and hilarious world that Dakota Cassidy has created. These books make me laugh out lough and I love the witty dialogue so much that I can’t stop reading until I’ve finished every last page. The Accidental Genie is much darker than the last book and deals with some very heavy issues while still managing to make the reader laugh and stay entertained. This is not an easy thing to do but is done brilliantly in this book.
It took me awhile to warm up to Jeannie mostly because she uses humor to cover up how hurt and scared she is. Once she opened up I loved her and was cheering her on the rest of the book. Jeannie has not had an easy life but meeting Sloan shows her that some men can be trusted and let into your life again. I really loved that Jeannie and Sloan take their time getting to know one another and that they didn’t even like each other very much in the beginning. Sloan is everything I love in a male lead he’s sexy, funny and a reformed man whore. Sloan was perfect for Jeannie and they are a couple that makes sense even though they are so different.
Like always the women from OOPS Nina, Marty and Wanda are around to provide lots of laughs and to keep things from getting too dark. Along with Mat and Darnell the secondary characters once again steal the show and are what makes this series a must read. I find myself trying to figure out who Nina will insult next and what clever way she’ll do it and fingers are crossed that Darnell gets more time in future books. He maybe one of my all time favorite characters.
The Accidental Genie is a magical ride of harem pants, too tight push up bras and one crazy talking magic carpet (who I loved). This book is full of surprises and shows that even the paranormal have tough lives and difficult pasts. I love reading these books and I can’t wait to see what crazy adventure falls in the ladies from OOPs laps next!
I have to say it is the least favorite of the series and it was plain bad for like the first 1/3 of the book. It picked up finally around 50% and ended well but my overall impression was forgettable. The first 3 were the best books with no doubt. I have read this series since book #1 came out and have enjoyed them all but the first 3 books were so much better and the next 2 were decent and enjoyable but this one was almost unbearable for about the first 1/3 of the book and the plot device that was so poor (a problem with a very obvious solution) that I could not even believe she expected readers to buy into it, it was more like the 3 Stooges . The romance took so long to get moving that by the time it got going I was already bored. I finished the book and that was saying something since it had long left me behind. All this book managed to do was possibly create another character for inclusion in future books but you could probably skip this book in the series and miss VERY little that could not be replaced with about 2 pages of info.
Bottom Line: This installment was phoned it until about the 50% mark and then it became close to an actual installment in the series. Die hard fans of this series (which I thought I was) are the only ones that are going to actually enjoy this whole book, the rest of us had to be dragged through it. Not horrible but average at best.
It was super cute and fun, as always. Some romance series fall into ruts, churning out books according to formula. I'm always nervous that each new book in this growing series will fall into that trap, but Cassidy knows exactly what she's doing. She keeps each new romance fresh by adding interesting elements and emotional depth to the characters that the reader really cares about, like Phoebe's sister Penny in the last book, or Jeannie's really intense back story in this one. There's a lot more than fluffy romance going on here, for all that it's a light and easy to read story. All of Cassidy's guys are irresistible and the woman are gals that I'd really like to know. And she mixes up the use of the OOPS friends so it doesn't get too overwhelming to have all of our familiar pals crowding out the new romantic leads in each book. In this one Nina took a bigger role and was her usual irritatingly charming self. Seeing Jeannie stand up to her and banter right back with her was one of the best parts of the book, as was watching their friendship develop; it was very true to the nature of the series, which is as much about deep and true female friendships as it is about romance, maybe more. I'm glad that once more my doubts were put at rest and I really enjoyed the book. As usual, Cassidy knows exactly what she's doing and I'm going to keep going along for the ride as long as she keeps giving me the opportunity.
1.5 stars. I love the wit and humor of Molly Harper, Gena Showalter, and Katie Macalister, so I thought I'd give Dakota Cassidy a try... I'm a part of the minority that didn't give this a high rating. This is my first, Dakota Cassidy and will probably be my last. Maybe I would have liked her books better if I started with the first one, but seriously, I doubt I have the fortitude to do it. The "banter" was stupid and confusing, the humor felt forced, and the editing (or writing) jumped around and was confusing. Dang, I obviously missed something...this is not the opinion of most of the other reviewers.
I could not get into this book to save my life. This book just tried too damn hard and it failed. It tried too hard with the pop culture references, with the attempt at banter, the crazy drug lord back story, and the whole ending surprise. It was just too much and it didn't work together.
I'm not going to add a star rating since I only made it through 81 of 338 pages. It was just too campy and tried too hard to be funny for me. I like the set up of a woman getting tricked into a genie bottle but it just didn't work for me for the above reasons. Not my cuppa.
This is my first Dakota Cassidy book - but it certainly won't be my last! The Accidental Genie was a barrel of laughs and just plain fun. It was fun to read and get to know everyone (I so want to read some of the other characters stories). It was funnier in the beginning with the more in your face humor and banter, it was lighter and more silly than later in the book. The plot didn't really pick up until quite a way into the book but I enjoyed the journey, I'll admit I didn't even realize that about the plot because I was so engrossed in the characters and the interactions between them.
Jeannie - I adored her. With all her quirks and charm, Jeannie was wonderful - well for the most part. Behind all her humor and smiles her story is a great deal darker than I would've expected just from looking at the book's blurb. Though it does help to explain things about her - the emotion that was portrayed was haunting and real and I wasn't expecting it to be quite as bad as it was. I didn't particularly like all the times she teased (granted it was playful and well received) about his blondes - it's just that this was so much that it got tiring. Her memory isn't all that great (but that may not actually be her fault given her past history) so that led to some…situations. I also did not like her plan for dealing with Victor - I just knew it was going to come back and bite her on the - well you know. Beyond those minor things I enjoyed her. I also liked Sloan a great deal. They made for a great couple - despite the fact he kept getting knocked out.
I have to say though I really bonded with Nina - the foulest-mouthed vampire you've ever met with a penchant for threatening to eat people and/or their parts. Despite that kind of raised-eyebrows, knee-jerk reaction when you first meet her she is really a great, loyal and interesting character. I may never get quite used to her foul-mouth but hers is the story I want to read. Wanda and Marty are equally wonderful but we didn't get to spend as much time with them as we did with Nina. I also really liked Mat and wished he'd had a bigger role (though he did get his chance to shine). Nekaar, Darnell, Betzi were also well liked and I wouldn't mind seeing them again.
This story had strong characters, humor, interesting and unexpected twists and good writing (if a bit much). I really enjoyed it. What knocked this down a star for me was that there was too much going on. I don't mind a complicated plot but this book is pretty much Murphy's Law on crack or something. It's just a bit much to fit into one story. It's not that I didn't like watching it all unfold, mostly I did it was just towards the end I was thinking come on give her a break already!
Overall though an enjoyable read, I really liked it. If you want something with humor, angst, romance and some quirky characters in equally unique situations - you want to read this. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Cassidy's books in the future. 4 stars!
The Accidental Genies is the seventh book in Dakota Cassidy’s Accidental series and it was a lot of fun. I have really enjoyed all the of the Accidentals but I think this one is probably my second favorite one besides the first one.
What I thought of this book
The Accidental Genie brings all the fun characters from the previous ones and then adds a new person Jeannie Carlyle. Jeannie is a caterer and can handle most problems that come her way. At a party she had a client ask her to open a bottle of Gin and when she did she got a bit more than she bargained for when a man popped out of the bottle. All of a sudden she gets sucked into the bottle and has no idea what to do, so she uses her phone to search out the term paranormal and finds a number for OOPS (Out in the Open Paranormal Support).
OOPS is a support group that Marty, Nina and Wanda started after they were all accidental turned paranormal. Sloan is Keegan’s brother and quite the playboy werewolf and he is not real keen on talking to a distraught woman. He is the only person around to answer the OOPS phone and now has to go and find Jeannie’s bottle.
When Sloan rubs the bottle Jeannie comes out she starts calling Sloan ‘master’ and it was then that I knew this was going to get real interesting. That and the fact that some how Jeannie has became a really powerful Jeannie and can grant anybodies wish even if they just think it. So you can imagine the chaos that ensues.
Jeannie has some secrets of her own though and it’s bad enough to get them all in trouble. It’s almost more trouble that the OOPS ladies can handle.
The Accidental Genie, like all the others had me laughing. I love humorous paranormal romances as they are just so much fun as long as they are done right and I haven’t yet read one of these that I haven’t liked. I love all the characters and Jeannie fits right in with all the other accidentals. Though some how I accidentally jumped from book 4 to book 7 and now must go back and get the other two I missed…lol.
Narrator: Meredith Mitchell
Meredith is the voice of the Accidentals and I can’t imagine anyone else narrating this series. She is great with the pacing and voices and I really enjoy her narrations. When I started out with book one I wasn’t sure about her but now I am so use to her that she really makes the series fun.
The OOPS girls are at it again in another hilarious adventure, and Jeannie's accidental wish-granting makes things even funnier. That's right, Dakota Cassidy named her Genie, Jeannie. I know some people might think it's tacky, or silly, but I thought it was perfect.
Dakota Cassidy has a way of making her characters believable whilst still maintaing the suspension of reality through magic and supernatural elements. Jeannie's backstory is a great example of this, which I won't reveal here because it's a major spoiler, but suffice to say the poor girl has some serious issues. Luckily she gets some closure in the final showdown.
Nina shows (again) that's she's mostly all bark and no bite, but will defend anyone she feels is the underdog or just needs defending. Probably the only thing that annoys me about this series is Nina's very colourful vocabulary - it's a bit too constant, and seems to have gotten more so as the series has progressed. Other than that, she can be very sweet when it's needed and her rather brutal honesty certainly clears things up quickly when necessary, although can cause more problems.
This series has been a fun one to read and I hope there are more to come.
Caterer extraordinaire Jeannie Carlyle is asked to open a rare bottle of Gin at a client's party, but is shocked when a guy in MC Hammer pants pops out, and she gets sucked in to the most filthy bachelor pad of a bottle. She has just enough battery power left on her cell to search the term "paranormal", and the number for OOPS pops up. Werewolf Sloan Flaherty was roped into helping answer phones at OOPS, though he's not too keen on helping distraught women. Sloan ends up being the only one available to deal with Jeannie's frantic call and to find her bottle. What ensues from there is a wonderful read with magical bonds, wishes out of control, and some awesome storytelling dealing with some secrets of Jeannie's that could cause danger to the OOPs team!
There's some great humor, especially with how Jeannie deals with her new situation, but I also loved when she found the strength to finally deal with everything that gets thrown her way in this story! Sloan is pretty awesome himself, and I loved how one of his wishes changes him in more ways than he imagined, lol. I also loved Nina , aka Meanest Woman Alive, in this story, and how she and Jeannie interacted in this story, as well. The conclusion of this story left me wanting more!
Genie-ius quirky romantic comedy with a paranormal twist!
A Genie named Jeannie? You might think her name is silly, but I thought it was perfect. I've never had so much fun with a paranormal romance. This light-hearted fantastical romp will have you laughing out loud.
During a catering assignment, Jeannie finds herself sucked into a bottle of gin. She uses her phone to search for and call OOPS (Out in the Open Paranormal Support) for help. A werewolf shows up to rub the bottle in an attempt to get her out. But she starts calling him Master and begins random accidentally granting wishes at random. Will her life ever return to normal?
The humor in this book wasn't what you might expect from such a frilly-looking cover. It's dark and very often dirty. It's like the PNR version of Bridesmaids. I can't believe how well Dakota was able to blend the humorous and the magical elements. This was such a finely crafted tale of comedy and fantasy.
ACCIDENTAL GENIE is a hilariously modern throwback to the TV show I Dream of Jeannie. Dakota Cassidy really knows how to write witty yet strong female characters, and I look forward to each of her books.
NUMBER OF HEARTS: 5 REVIEW: Dear Ms. Dakota, Thank you so very much for making me cry, laugh, cringe and have a major case of anxiety. You wrote yet another great Accidental story. But let me just tell you how much I hate when a certain person kept getting the upper hand. Oh did I die just a little. Ugggg!!!!! But I still love you and can not wait for the next adventure into the Accidentals. Oh and what you did to Nina!!! Priceless!!! Pure genius!!!! Or should I say GENIEUS!!!! Is that a word? Oh who cares!! Loved it!!! Loved Jeanie. Loved Sloan!!!! Loved it all!!!! Thanks for a great story, Me.
And as always Ms. Mitchell does an amazing job of bring this rag tag crew to life for me. Keep up the awesome work Meredith.
On to the next adventure!!!!!!
Disclaimer: I purchased this audiobook from Audible.com and this review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
It was nothing but fun...a veritable pop culture-palooza. It was fast paced and a bit hard to keep up with the pop references (are they all even real?) but some parts were laugh out loud funny. I feel younger, hipper and invigorated after reading this book.
Sure...you could rip it apart with pacing, characters, profanity, lame drug-dealer story line, but whatevah! It is a fun book...sometimes you just have to step back and say WTF and read something, well, stupid.
Really! It has a genie named Jeannie and a magic carpet named Mat. Come on...that's funny. There's even a Rick Astley Together Forever reference. Hey. If you are under 30 you just will not get that.
Note: This is the first book in the series that I have read and I will def search out another before summer begins and another before it ends. (Oh, and it's totally a chick book though.)
This author created a cast of interesting, loveable, endearing characters that carry over from book to book. The problem is she made a mistake in creating one character too powerful. All any of them have to do is mentally "call" their demon friend Darnell and he will instantly appear to help them. But this would be too easy and eliminate the dramatic build up to the climax where the hero not the demon helps save the day. So the heroine of each of the last three books has had to become suddenly too stupid to remember this way to call for help. This way they can be kidnapped, beat, tortured or even killed waiting for the dramatic rescue when all they need to do is think of Darnell for immediate help.
This book also ended with another ridiculous new paranormal. A vampirini.
I have to be honest, out of all the accidentals I think this is the one I've laughed the least. It was funny the story line was enjoyable but not laugh out loud funny. Maybe it's because Sloan never interested me before. I feel like his backstory as minimal because the reader is expected to already know him based off of previous books. This is fine but there was nothing about him in the previous books that made him desirable to me. Now Jeannie I loved. Loved her humour and strength. Of course Nina is my favorite person eva. So I seriously enjoyed her dynamic with Jeannie. Can't wait for the next book. Hope this series never ends.
I love Genies, unfortunately it's not a topic that i have seen very often in literature. so needless, i was excited to read this book. going into reading it, i knew that it was part of a series, and the 5th or 6th one in said series, but i also knew that it was about new characters. I figured i would get spoiled as to the end game of the previous novels - but this IS chick-lit, i know that the first guy the main gal's eyes meet they will be canoodling by the end of the book... (guess what i was right). I would like to read the two previous books about Nina and Marty, i liked both of them - especially Nina, but her potty mouth was a bit much at times.
was cute and fun! a little rushed and confusing at the end, like her being head genie was kinda outta nowhere. and sometimes I was like 'why don't they just make a wish to fix the problem?!? she's a genie with endless wishes for crying out loud!!' but then I guess that woulda made the story boring. and I thought it strange how when she showed her chest during sex she claimed the scars were the reason why she couldn't wear a shirt past her collar bone without exposing them, yet she spent the first few chapters in a genie push up bra and no one noticed any scars lol. but despite all that, it was still a fun book to read :)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
A lot better than the last couple by leaps and bounds. I was really getting tired of Nina's mouth, and everyone having the same 'voice'. There were times where I couldn't tell one character from another because they all talked and sounded the same.
I seriously almost didn't read this because I was getting tired of the above. But I'm glad I decided to read it, some parts threw me back to the last couple books, but for the most part it was refreshing.
The ending was pretty stellar as well and I'm looking forward to more in this series.
I am not amused by this series as much as I once was. A little of Nina goes a long way, and she was front and center with all her swearing and obnoxious behavior. I found the genie aspect of the story, especially at the start to be funny, but Jeannie's past not so much. I did love the good deed that Jeannie did at the end, although I am a little worried about Nina's new role.
this series has been fun to read, but I'm gonna take a break from the Dakota Cassidy's for a while now. Nina's really getting on my last nerve and while she's better in this book I don't think she is all she's cracked up to be if you hear the other characters speaking about her.
really nice series if you're up for something light to read but not re-reading material, once was enough
It was fantastic! I got a little confused towards the end, people popping up out of no where... Or maybe I keep glossing over their entrances.. (I reread it twice, still did not see it)
This series started off bumpy in the first book but it didn't take long for the series to find its balance. Accidental Genie is the 7th book in the series and is one of the better ones.
It's really hard to know how to rate this one. It's over the top cheesy at the beginning but actually ends up a bit dark with a lot of disturbing things happening or being discovered within the story. I liked that with it being about the djinn it was a nice switch up from the normal paranormal romance novels, and I like how their OOPS operation is playing along. However, the characters I feel are getting to be a little too over the top, and generic in a way. Nina surprisingly was at her most likeable in her actions, and yet her way of talking is becoming exaggerated and not at all how it was in the beginning which has made her a bit irritating as well. I liked Sloan, but Jeannie was a character that it was hard to decide on, because her defense mechanism of joking (while understandable) was a bit off putting and like she wasn't really listening to what others had been trying to tell her. I will say this, the very end of this book threw out a big surprise which does make me wonder what will happen later on.
My last one, I only read this far to get to this book for a reading challenge. This started out strong then went to shit pretty quickly. Seriously, these catty b*&^%$ think they are entitled to snoop into her life and endanger her because they're scared. Well then if you're so scared pack up OOPS and go back into hiding. She didn't owe ya shit and so tired of the overbearing, know it all attitude of these three ladies. They never seem to help anyways, only make things worse, the newest paranormal always seems to figure it out while Nina pretends to be hot shit on a stick, in the way and generally annoys the hell out of everyone. I hate everything about these women... Ugh
I made the mistake of reading two books in a row. One book and I can be charitable, two and I'm ready to start burning books.
I enjoyed this book, but I like Cassidy's cozies better. I prefer a nice, light, fun read, and this one had some themes that were darker than I enjoy. (There was also cursing (which I don't mind) and sex scenes (which I thought were well written, better than most I have read), which are not found in her cozies. Both of these are things that are okay with me, so they had no influence on my rating. I just wanted to mention it, in case someone else was coming from her cozies.) In all, I liked the two main characters, though I'm not sure about the other women in the book (I may like them better after I read their stories.), and I enjoyed their romance. I will probably read more in this series, but surround them with warm, fuzzy reads in case they deal with such heavy subjects as well.
The Accidental Genie is a fun quick read that seamlessly blends with the rest of the Accidental series. I did notice that with Jeannie and Sloan's story that I wasn't as engrossed as I was with the others, but I can't quite put my finger on why. The story was very true to Dakota Cassidy's writing style and to the series. The book dedicated enough time to the plot of her "accidental" story while still giving enough background on the two main characters of Sloan and Jeannie. I did really enjoy the brotherly moment between Keegan and Sloan, and I wish that we saw more of those moments from the OOPs group.
