[Review of Advanced Reader Copy] Last month I visited my high school best friend and her husband in Michigan for the weekend. While we were in Ann Arbor, they took us to one of their favorite places: Zingerman's. What a glorious ambiance in the store and the sandwich we ate was incredibly yummy. My friend and I are much older now and, after years of cooking and baking, we know what we like and have raised and fed our families on much good food. This Zingerman's Bakehouse Celebrate Every Day cookbook will be one of a very few that is worthy of being added to our established cooking repertoire. I plan on trying every recipe in the book -- they ALL look delicious! For an experienced, older cook to be this excited about a new cookbook says a lot! The store, the food, the people -- all wonderful. The recipes included are actual recipes a family would love to make every single day a special occasion. The book layout, pictures and graphics are gorgeous. All around well done cookbook!
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC of Zingerman's Bakehouse Celebrate Every Day.
This is a beautiful cookbook with an organized layout and beautiful photos!
I love how the recipes are organized by season and an information sidebar about the origins of a particular celebration and holiday was provided, which added helpful context for the recipe being featured on the same page.
I wasn't familiar with Zingerman's Bakehouse but I appreciate the opportunity to learn more about this incredible business and the gorgeous breads and desserts they provide for their loved ones and community.
Look to add a new cookbook to your collection. Well, look no further Zingerman's Celebrate Every Day cookbook has something for everyone from sweet tooth to something savory and warm for winter.
You get a book with easy-to-follow recipes, pictures, helpful ingredient substitutions, and more.
I loved the cheddar herb scones so much that I plan on buying the book to keep in my collection.
Thank you, Netgalley for the loan to review this awsome cookbook.
In 1992, a group of bakers opened Zingerman’s Bakehouse in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Then almost 20 years later, a virus nearly shut it down. During the pandemic, the bakers of Zingerman had to temporarily shut their doors and then try to figure out how to keep baking for their customers, even when they could only allow 6 in the bakery at a time. But it was also a time when we all craved community. We needed reasons to connect and celebrate, and delicious food can always help with that.
To keep serving their customers, the leaders of the Bakehouse came together and created recipe booklets, to help home chefs create some of their favorite dishes. And because that went over so well, they turned those booklets into an entire new cookbook filled with ways to celebrate throughout the year. It’s about the times we come together to eat and enjoy each other, from holidays and birthdays to tailgating and snow days and going to the farmer’s market for the freshest of produce. Each season has its own reasons to celebrate, and these bakers want to make the most of each day.
For Spring, you can celebrate the first day of spring with Key Lime Pie or Rhubarb Cheesecake Bars. For Earth Day there is Oh So A-Peel-ing Banana Bread, and there is a Run for the Roses Pie (with bourbon) for the Kentucky Derby Day. For Easter, there are Hot Cross Buns and Raspberry Marshmallow Bunny Tails, and for graduations you can bring out the Goat Cheese and Tomato Galettes and Buttermilk Celebration Cake.
Summer brings a Blueberry Buckle for Memorial Day, Cosmic Cakes for the last day of school, and a Fresh Fruit Tart to celebrate all the bright and delicious fruits of summer. There is a Summer Fling Coconut and Lime Coffee Cake, Cheery Cherry Pie, and Carrot Cake Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting for weddings, anniversaries, or any other celebration you want. The have include a Maize and Blue Cobbler in the local University of Michigan colors for those first football games and Raspberry Patti Pockets for the first day of school (they’re a homemade version of a popular breakfast toaster pastry).
When the weather turns colder, Fall brings Rosy Red Apple Pie, Sugar Crisp Muffins, and Michigan Double Chocolate Cookies. For Rosh Hashanah, you can make the Halvah Swirl Cheesecake or Not-Just-Chocolate Babka. For Yom Kippur, there is a Bumble Rye Cake and Bialys. And when it’s time to break out the beer for Oktoberfest, there are Bavarian Soft Pretzels and the 5 O’Clock Cheddar Ale Soup. For Halloween, there are Pumpkin Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting, and ideas for both Thanksgiving and friendsgiving, like a Pumpkin Cheesecake or a Chocolate Chess Pie.
And then winter brings a bounty of delicious ideas, like Chocolate Coins and Durum Olive Oil Cake for Hanukkah, Gingerbread Coffee Cake and a Breakfast Italian Sausage and Pepper Strata. for Christmas. For New Year’s there are Chocolate-Dipped Espresso Stars, Creamy Cremini Turnovers, and Cheddar Herb Scones. There is a French King Cake for Epiphany and a New Orleans King Cake for Mardi Gras. You can make the OMG Chocolate Cupcakes for your Valentine, and make Chicago-Style Deep-Dish Pizza and Hot Cocoa Crispy Rise Treats for a snowy day. For the middle of March’s Pi Day (3.14), there is a Banana Cream Pie, and St. Patrick’s Day offerings include Beef and Guinness Stew and an Irish Brown Soda Bread.
These recipes are infused with a spirit of playfulness and whimsy, and the photographs of these dishes make them look so inviting. I think Zingerman’s Bakehouse Celebrate Every Day is exactly what the name says—reasons and ways to celebrate the big and small miracles of life, and it’s a sweet reminder to come together with friends old and new to create new memories and new traditions. There is something in this cookbook for everyone, for every celebration, and for every day.
Egalleys for Zingerman’s Bakehouse Celebrate Every Day were provided by Chronicle Books through Edelweiss, with many thanks.
I have never been to Ann Arbor, Michigan, but I am a long time reader of the Zingerman’s catalog. I’ve even ordered bread from the Bakehouse, back before I was a more confident baker. I have very warm feelings for Zingerman’s Bakehouse. Zingerman’s Bakehouse: Celebrate Every Day lives up to those warm feelings. It’s so friendly. In the introduction, Bakehouse Managing Partner Amy Emberling talked about how the cookbook came to be, both the inspiration and the process. I love that it is a pandemic baby born from a need to bolster and nourish community and it’s creation is an act of collaboration.
Under normal circumstances I would have tried a whole bunch of these recipes before writing a review. But this summer was deadly hot and there was constant fear that the Texas electrical grid would fail. So soup and baking weren’t terribly appealing. On top of that my oven wasn’t working and we decided to put off repair until late September. As soon as I had a working oven I immediately started making the Bakehouse White Bread. Naturally I screwed up the first batch by adding too much milk, but the bread was still delicious. The second attempt, with a more careful follow of directions, yield a lovely loaf of bread that would be perfect for grilled cheese sandwiches. It was so perfect for sandwiches in general that it didn’t last long enough for a grilled cheese experiment.
The book is divided by season and celebration. My Summer started in May and is still going (it’s 94 degrees Fahrenheit non the 4th of October), so seasons are a state of mind. My birthday happened recently, and I love gingerbread more than anything, so I made the Gingerbread Coffee Cake suggested for the first day of winter. I loved it. I confess that I added more ginger powder, I am a ginger fiend. I loved the dimensions of flavor that the orange juice and coffee added. I didn’t have a chance to get a hold of long pepper, so I added fresh ground black pepper instead.
Celebrate Every Day is a perfect cookbook for gift giving. Do be aware that it doesn’t have many gluten free or vegan recipes if that is a dietary concern.
I received this as an advance reader copy from Chronicle Books and NetGalley. My opinions are my own, freely and honestly given.

Zingerman’s Bakehouse was started in 1992 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and has been a popular place for artisan bakery specialties. Anyone who wants to duplicate some of these mouthwatering items will want to pick up Zingerman's Bakehouse Celebrate Every Day: A Year's Worth of Favorite Recipes for Festive Occasions, Big and Small, an excellent cookbook by Amy Emberlingis the managing partner and master baker at Zingerman’s Bakehouse, with help from co-authors Lindsay-Jean Hard, Lee Vedder, and Corynn Cosica. This excellent cookbook includes recipes to serve for celebrations throughout the year.
The information on the history of Zingerman’s Bakehouse is interesting, and the recipes are amazing and very appealing. They are presented in the standard manner, with the ingredients listed in order first, followed by step-by-step instructions, making it possible for everyone – beginning to advanced cooking abilities – to prepare the recipes with picture-perfect results. There are also notes and comments at the beginning of each recipe that are fun and helpful.
One of the best things about this cookbook is that there are beautiful, professional photographs of almost every recipe, making it difficult to decide just what to make next.
All told, this excellent cookbook is one that is fun to read cover to cover, and is one that will inspire bakers to bake for holidays and regular days throughout the year. Those who aren’t lucky enough to live near a Zingerman’s Bakehouse will want to make these yummy treats at home.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
This cookbook has a bit of everything – cookies, brownies, cakes, pastries, pizzas, sweet and savory pies, soups, and stews. There will definitely be some recipes I will go back to again and again like the Black and White Magic Brownies, the Michigan Double Chocolate Cookies or the Cheddar Herb Scones.
The book is filled with 100 gorgeous photographs which are always what I look at first – they draw you in so you want to make the recipes. I loved this cookbook with the exception of the way the recipes were laid out - by various life events, seasons and holidays. This is just my preference and they have an alphabetical index in the back that easily shows where to find each recipe. Whether you're a seasoned baker or a novice this is a wonderful cookbook to add to your collection. They have bonus of sidebars with extra information and all ingredients are easy to find.
I want to thank NetGalley, Amy Emberling, Lindsay-Jean Hard, Lee Vedder, and Corynn Coscia and Chronicle Books for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
This book will be wonderful addition to the kitchen of anyone who loves making good and great things to eat for family and friends! Plus the beauty of the book itself is a welcome addition to the cookbook library in any home....I know it will soon be part of mine! I love a cookbook that has great introductions to the makers of the recipes, the reasons the cookbook was developed, and what to look forward to in the chapters ahead! Those things give a baker/cook incentive to be a part of the yummy results shared in the book. Love the pictures and information about the recipe included with the instructions on how to make it. Also a great idea to divide by seasons!! So many yummy things within the pages of this cookbook that its hard to pick out favorites. So just start with the season you are in and move forward with testing them all out -- you won't regret it! Thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the opportunity to read and review this advance reader copy. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. #NetGalley #ZingermansBakehouseCelebrateEveryDay
This book organizes recipes by holidays in the calendar year, attempting to correlate them with cultural traditions. Contrary to the title, all sorts of recipes are included, such as stews, main dishes, breads and desserts. The photos seem a bit on the brown-ish hues, a bit less colorful than I'd like to see. But a full page photo of each recipe is included, which is a big plus in my mind.
The recipes are accompanied with background information about the cultural connections. Many of them seem quite lengthy, which is less appealing to me. But, I did find a recipe for Nanaimo Bars, my absolute favorite dessert of all time, so I may have to try that one! Others that were appealing included a Hungarian bean soup, cheddar herb scones, and a recipe for burger buns that look exactly like the ones my mom makes. I'd say this book would be a nice complement to a well-stocked kitchen library as it has some unique recipes that wouldn't be found elsewhere.
I received this advance review copy from the publisher and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
What a delight. Now, it is true that I have been going to Zingerman's in Ann Arbor since I was in High School in Grand Rapids. It always has good, often too expensive food. When my daughter was little we met my parents in Ann Arbor and I bought what was then the most expensive challah I have ever purchased. This past Labor Day we ate at the Bakehouse, which we only found this trip, hidden in a industrial warehouse complex together with their coffee roasters, the candy shop and the creamery. It was even more magical than the usual Kerrytown location. Celebrate Every Day is something my mother always said, was something I sang in choir and is how I try to live my life. The cookbook with its gorgeous photography and emphasis on the little holidays: snow day, Super Bowl, Tailgating (it is Ann Arbor) First Days of Seasons, etc, will make this easier. Some too complicated for me. Some not kosher. All looking beautiful, all well written, (I love the stories behind the recipes they've chosen and the tips) and no doubt taste divine.
I like to think of myself as a proficient baker, but the truth is I am an amateur with a wicker sweet tooth and a knack for following recipes. Whether a professional or a beginner, this book has something for you.
This visually appealing cookbook contains an explosion of color and inventive ideas with recipes that are simple to follow.
There is nothing worse than making a recipe and feeling like the author intentionally left out an ingredient. Here that is NOT the case. And while I can’t say that my creations looked as beautiful as Zingerman’s, I have to believe they tasted nearly as good because WOW, I can’t imagine anything tasting better!
Some of my favorite recipes included: - Key Lime Pie (I thought my aunt Kate’s recipe was the best but nope I was wrong) - Rustic Italian Baguettes - Cheddar Herb Scones - Summer Fling Coconut and Lime Coffee Cake

Having run a cookbook club for a few years, there are a handful of traits that make a perfect cookbook and this one has them all!

Sorted by season, and somewhat sub-sorted by relevant holiday, this mix of recipes is a great way to celebrate the wheel of the year. Using seasonal foods and inspiration across many food cultures there will be something for everyone in this cookbook. The dishes mix skills so this cookbook will be a great reference for cooks and bakers of all levels.
I am for sure going to buy this in hard copy and already have several recipes on next week's meal plan to try.
I have a friend who has sung the praises of Zingerman’s but I have never made it to Ann Arbor to have the first hand experience. This is certainly as close as it gets with Zingerman’s collection of celebratory recipes.
This is a fabulous cookbook. The recipes are organized by season, beginning with spring and are organized by holidays. For example, summer has two recipes for the first day of school; these are raspberry Patti pockets and local spoonful creamy baked oatmeal. Both look delicious. Find recipes for everything from Passover to Father’s day, and from Halloween to Christmas, and so much more.
The recipes vary in difficulty. An easy one is “The Works Grilled Cheese Sandwich” while some of the bakes are I think beyond my level.
The book is filled with photos and they are sure to make cooks and bakers hungry. This will definitely inspire them to get into the kitchen!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for this title. All opinions are my own.
This is a beautiful cook book. The recipes are divided up in Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. There are 234 pages of recipes with thorough instructions. Even if you are a beginner, you will be able to get through the recipe and with instruction create your own masterpiece. I have been baking for over 50 years and still find recipes in this book that I have never heard of or tried before. I am looking forward to making the bread recipes especially the one using Rye flour. My husband was the bread baker in our family, but last year he passed away and now I want to learn how. After reading the instructions, I know it won't be as hard as I thought it was going to be. There are four pages of techniques and diagrams in alphabetical order which give the reader and novice baker explaining the processes involved for a successful outcome. I consider this book to be a "keeper," and a wonderful addition to my years of collecting great cookbooks.
almost a five for me ...but i a using a kindle version, i will say that of the KINDLE version cookbooks this is so high up there. but the details, the wording all that is just so much better in a real hand held book. i enjoy how it is layout, in that you might wanna celebrate a holiday, you open the contents and hello there are so many holidays to celebrate, of even ones you are not familiar with and you wanna check those recipes out. what fun!! i have a huge list i wanna try. can't wait. fun times. check this out. the pics are great ... it was a Goodreads giveaway kindle book win for me. i do wonder how or why they pick the recipes they do? as well as how many they decide to add to the cookbook? curious. check it out. fun recipes and i look forward to try them asap!! will you??
It’s a well rounded collection of recipes, because it includes sweet and savory; Zingerman’s Bakehouse Celebrate Every Day has recipes for cookies, bread, cakes, potpies, stews… there are some I am looking forward to try, others I’ll have to tweak a bit because I am allergic to some ingredients, but I don’t think it will be a great change in the final product. It has a section for resources, techniques, equipment and ingredients, it has background for the recipes and offers insight in traditions from around the world. It’s a good, good book and I really enjoyed it. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me a copy to review.
I was wondering why the title of this cookbook was so familiar and it turns out that I had visited Zingerman's in Ann Arbor back in 2020! I got the impression that it was a cute, local sandwich place but the cookbook shows it offers much more than that.
The book is sectioned into seasons and within those seasons, holidays and events. I guess this ties into their "celebrate every day" title but I found it kind of a pain. The recipes themselves are relatively diverse and offer both metric and volume measurements. I made the Cheddar Herb Scones and they turned out lovely. I'm excited to try out more recipes.
Having grown up in Ann Arbor, Zingerman's is still a stop on my itinerary whenever I visit family. I own other Zingerman cookbooks because the recipes are clear and easy to follow (and I am not an expert cook or baker). During Covid, I took virtual cooking and baking classes from them and I was happy to see some of the recipes (like the scones) were in this book. I also liked the opening sections written by the authors and appreciated all of the great pictures. I also appreciated the variety of recipes and can't wait to try more! I recommend this cookbook.
Thank you to Netgalley and Chronicle Books for an ARC and I left this review voluntarily.
I really enjoyed reading this cookbook. It's set out so creatively, with recipes grouped by occasion. I was surprised at how many I marked to try! I tried one recipe, the Sugar Crisp Muffins, and they were excellent. I can't wait to try more when the weather cools off. Ones I marked to try include the white bread recipe, whole-wheat funky chunky cookies, michigan double chocolate cookies, the gingerbread coffee cake, the chicago deep-dish pizza and the hot chocolate rice krispie treats. I think this would be a wonderful cookbook to gift at the holidays. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my complimentary digital copy. All opinions are my own.
I have never been to the Zingerman Bakehouse but after checking out this cookbook it will be on my list of places to stop the next time I am in the area. In this book the recipes are arranged by season with all those special days included. So if you want to celebrate the Kentucky Derby then you could check out their Run for the Roses pie. There are special recipes for the First Day of School. Maybe you would like to celebrate Pi Day with a Zingerman's deli chicken pot pie. The lovely photos of the end results will make your mouth water and want to get in the kitchen to start baking. This is a must cookbook for a person that loves to bake.
I absolutely adored Zingerman's Bakehouse Celebrate Every Day! From the moment I flipped through its pages, I was hooked. The photos were simply stunning, making every recipe feel like a work of art. And the recipes themselves? Pure magic! The fun and charming vibe of the book made it a joy to explore, and the added bonus of sidebars extra info was just the icing on the cake. If you're looking for a cookbook that's both delightful and practical, this is the one for you! This is a culinary adventure you won't want to miss.
The iconic Zingerman's. So Lucky to be able to review and have them share the recipes that are beloved by so many. The in-depth recipes accompanied by the amazingly beautiful photos as well as diagram's for techniques. This is the ultimate recipe book that is divided by season and will be something you refer to every season. Definitely pick this one up and try the Beef and Guinness stew with Irish Soda Bread, or the Zinglish Muffins for a early morning treat. You will not regret adding this one to your cooking library.
Thank you to Zingerman's, the publisher and Netgalley.
Sweet and savory for every season and special day of note...With a fun, can do attitude, this book is broken down into 4 seasons, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Colorful photos, step by step directions in a conversational style with measurements in cups and grams (thank you) there's a recipe to celebrate every special day. I liked both the sweet and savory options and that so many celebrations had a recipe with some zing. The chicken pot pie and babka were recipes I am definitely making. Recommend.
This is a really awesome cookbook with a variety of recipes. The recipes are sorted by season, events and holidays making it really easy to find a recipe for a specific event or holiday. My favorite recipes are Caramel Apple Cake, Pumpkin Cupcakes With Cream Cheese Frosting and the Banana Cream Pie. I would recommend this! Special Thank You to Amy Emberling, Lindsay-Jean Hard, Lee Vedder, and Corynn Coscia, Chronicle Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
When my son attended the University of Michigan for graduate school in Ann Arbor, we enjoyed visiting Zingerman’s for sandwiches and treats. I cannot tell you how excited I was to get my hands on this cookbook!! I love all the pictures and the details recipes. It is a beautiful book and I am excited to try my hand at the banana bread and Key Lime Pie recipes. I will return to this book again and again.
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a beautiful recipe book! The pictures of the recipes look good and show what each recipe should turn out like. There's a variety of recipes in this book sorted by season highlighting different celebrations and holidays throughout the year. There's fun recipes for pies, brownies, and other standard American baking fair.
Thank you Goodreads for this giveaway book. I am planning on making many, many of the recipes in this book. I love how they are divided into seasons and occasions. The pies, cakes, cookies and soups have my mouth watering. Thank you very much,I'm off to the grocery store to purchase what I need to get started. This cookbook is well done and I highly recommend it.
I received a copy via a giveaway and was super excited as a Michigan grad. Zingermans continues to be one of my first stops every time I visit Ann Arbor, and I love having the opportunity to try out some of their recipes. This cookbook is not only full of recipes, but also a bit of a memoir of a point in time for the bakery during the pandemic. It would make a great gift for lovers of Zingermans and Michigan grads.
