Book #1 in the Liaisons series.
First off let me start by saying that this book came out of left field for me. I went into it thinking that this was going to be a paranormal romance and I knew that it would be fabulous because everything "Poppet" writes is praise worthy. Holy mother of god! (or should I say Erra?) What I got was soooooo much more than a pathetic label. The story kicks you in your teeth from the get go, starting with our heroine being stalked by a former co-worker's son and a hulking mystery man steps in to save the day. From that point on, the plot wheels are spinning at full speed and Mistress Poppet burns her addictive branding over our hearts. I was absolutely floored at the richness of her research, proof that she takes her craft serious. I've taken many theology classes and it was thrilling to see some of the same context used in the story.
Point blank---I'm reading story number two today. Loved this story!!
So I'm still not really sure how I feel about this book. First, it was free, otherwise I really don't know how I would've stumbled onto it. The first few chapters made me think "Wait, it did say paranormal romance, right? Not just romance?" Then all of the sudden it turns into a little too much of a forced smuttiness (or as I've called it before, rapey). I mean, yeah, I eventually get over it and continue with the book, but it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. Similar to the way I felt when I read the Immortals After Dark book. I mean, it really had some good smut -- it would've been better off just leaving it a single paranormal love story, rather than making it some paranormal love triangle with some kinda forced smut scenes. That being said, I added 3 of her other books to my "to-read" shelf :-)
A totally absurd story, with no plot that I could understand (or is it stand?). Moreover at the end it plunges further downhill talking about god, religion, demons and humanity being a failed project that has to be destroyed/saved. The author fear blasphemy and use the bible as a final word to prove she might be right. But honestly I wouldn't be worried of such an accusation.
The book has major problems, and to me blasphemy is not one. I believe in strong women, but her version of women doesn't appeal to me. The lack of a story, of characters to sympathize with, of a smoothly written text are, to me, the real downfalls.
The first person POV makes everything harder, as she seems completely stoned all the time.
I really wanted to love this book. It had some amazingly intriguing idea and lore. I had some trouble getting into the story because of editing issues and I just did not feel comfortable with the ending. I think because I did not believe her emotions.. I probably should have given this book a two, but the ideas were so amazing. The author is obviously well versed in the lores she used and is clearly well researched. I may read the second book. The sneaky looks like it will focus on different characters, which should be interesting.
At no time was I ever lost with this book. This book is an emotional roller coaster. The writing truly touched me. I was completely immersed. The only reason it took me 2 days to read it was that I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. This book has such great depth. It starts out seemingly like a normal romance and takes a complete turn and down the roller coaster you go. The theology and ancient Indian lore take this story so much further and opens up a different view of the world. Poppet has an immense imagination and has touched my heart.
Didn't get it! The reviews I read gave a totally different impression of the book. Erra is abusive to Sarah to the point of breaking bones, he injects her with some mad scientist serum that "infects" her, then in a fit of rage Dustin rapes her??? Then this religious connection just didn't mix, not my idea of romance!
Such a wonderful message. Truth or not, this is how I'd like to look at the world. Humans are sick, sad, lonely and full of hatred. If we could only embrace the philosophy and integrate into our daily lives, live would have more meaning. This is the 2nd time I've read this. It has more meaning RIGHT NOW than any other book I've read...and that's a whole lot! I hope this is the truth. I could live easier and love with MORE believing this. Thank you author!
My Review / Thoughts / Feelings / Strapline: I'm not sure where to start -- I've never read anything quite like this. I finished reading it a while ago, and had to take some time out to digest it.
First off, it's not JUST a romance, it's sort of theology as well. It's fiction, but also not completely fiction. Well, it is fiction, but it's so much more than fiction if you've ever studied or practised Paganism, for example, to an extent where it means something to you ... and I have. So this book meant a lot to me.
Everyone will get something different out of this. I'm not sure any two people can read such a philosophical tale (or maybe it's fictionalised philosophy - I'm sure that's not a term, but let's pretend it is) and get the exact same thing out of it.
Let's talk about something easier to grasp: Poppet's writing style. Loved it. It's fantastic. It's beautifully poetic. She's written this in the first person and she certainly has a unique style. For this reason alone, I'd recommend reading it. I found her writing very entertaining all the way through.
The romance: there is romance in it, and some very hot, well written scenes, but after I finished the book, I didn't feel I could call it a romance ... at least not just a romance.
If you're the kind of person that used to sit out with their friends 'til 5 a.m. smokin' roll-ups, eating jelly vodka and philosophising about life, the universe and everything, then do give this book a go.
If you're very knowledgeable about theories that are Pagan / pre-Christian / Rosicrucian / Gnostic Christian / Knights Templar (yes, they all merge at some point or another, and contain similarities to each other), you may not find the specific idea laid out in this book unique, per se, but the way that it has been put across is definitely unique.
This review probably makes no sense. But that book did leave me feeling a little abstract, so this is most likely me reflecting.
I'll definitely pick up the second book to see where Poppet takes this next.
What can I say my dear friend Poppet? This book had me at wow from the very first page! Most of the books I read have very erotic scenes in them, but Erra, I felt I needed a dozen cool showers for several chapters! It took me away from where I sat and put me into the story and I was with the characters and and I could feel it within myself. It was a wonderful escape to experience and it lasted through the entire book. I have never had this experience with any other book I have read. Don't get me wrong, I love the books I have read along with the wonderful authors who wrote them, but each one has their own special signature on their work, each giving a part of themselves. Poppet reached way down and gave her all in this book. She gave her heart, her imagination, creativity, compassion, love and understanding, along with her wonderful talent to bring it all together in what you see in front of you, Erra.
This is a wonderful love story that is like none I have ever read before and I do not say this lightly. The setting for this story, the characters have a background that makes the reader actually stop and think, could this have really happened? Could it have actually occurred this way? It makes you look at life through totally different eyes, and yes it puts questions in your mind, if even for a second, that maybe, just maybe this is how we really came into existence and how things really are. And to know that a woman is truly the center and all to it All. The love story tore at my soul several times, not really knowing who I wanted Sarah to be with, Dusty or Erra. Both were different yet the same. I am still torn, and I am glad there is another book right behind this one so I can continue with this wonderful and brilliant piece of art my good friend and author Poppet has been so gracious to write and share with all of us.
I highly recommend this book, and without hesitation give it five stars *****
How did this book get 24 5-star ratings? First of all, it reads as if it was written by a schizophrenic. Seriously, I hereby dub Poppet the Queen of Fragmented, Incoherent Sentences. Maybe it's just this one book, but damn, she has worked hard for that title! Erra is the first book I've ever bought that I have not been able to finish and here are three examples as to why.
1.) Excerpt: "Is someone bothering you?" Yes actually, the son of my dead boss seems to want to find me, so please let go so I can get out of here before he sees me. But instead my throat has ceased.
Her throat has ceased? Seriously? How does a throat cease? Do you mean seized as in seized up, or ceased as in ceased to function? Nope, neither one. It's just ceased. Right out of the middle of her neck. Gone.
How about this little beauty, 2.) And off we go, trotting like two horses about to start fillying about.
Fillying about? Is this slang for frolicking? He's walking her to her car to avoid a stalker and she wants to start frolicking with some stranger she only just met?! How many ladies do you know who would react like this when they're being followed by someone creepy?!
3.) On page one, she refers to her hero as The Hulk. On page two, he's Mr Capable. On page three, he's Mr Lickable. This girl needs some serious medication or the author needs a baby name book so she can actually name some of the characters in this story.
I made it as far as the third chapter and then had to give up. This is one giant cliche after fragmented sentence after confusing I-don't-know-it-might-be-slang after cliche again. The whole thing reads like a pulp-knock-off Dick Tracy comic, it is that bad.
Fantasy story with amnesia, shape-shifting winged angel-like creatures and sexy buff men who fight over a sexy librarian. Sarah is not your usual glasses wearing book carrying librarian, she is smart and really physically fit but still no match for the crazy stalker Erik/Erra who is bothering her. So she jumps into bed with the sexy Dustin when he shows up to help her out with the Erik situation. There are lot of moments in this story where I was confused to what was going on because some one was shape-shifting or drugged up or being experimented on or something equally confusing with as we only get Sarah's point of view which is in flawed first person narrative at times which works great in the Harry Potter books, but here I felt like I just woke up out of a groggy nightmare. Ok, after getting about 70% into the story, I have to revise my strongly negative review for a more mild one because once Sarah gets this big clumsy exposition explication of her origins as well as the cosmology of this story's world, the story starts to make sense. So this author spent some serious time making up a mix-up of traditional religions with some fantasy aspects. I still like that sort of thing in Dune with the savior theme, but this doesn't have the clarity or flow to make it a great story. I checked out some of the other reviews and I'm not sure that we're reading the same book because I really can't give this more then 2 stars for a decent story with a complex and consistent cosmos. There is a missing HEA although it does end hopefully but it is a series... 306 pages but it felt more like 200 2 stars
This book was a strange experience...I dont know how else to describe it. The book got so many intriguing and positive reviews I thought I would give it a try. I'm not unhappy that I spent the time to read it but I wont read another of Poppet's books. Let me explain: The concept was good, interesting and fresh and the author did a lot of research and tied mythology and theology and just plain old fantasy together really well. If I were rating the book on concept, I would give it a 4. Unfortunately, the problem (and the 1 star) was from the actual flow in the book. The writing was really hard to follow and did not flow well at all. Also, the descriptors and even some of the dialogue (internal and external) was really poetic but was way too abstract. That happened often (paragraph after paragraph of metaphor and poetic descriptors). Let me give an example..."The sound coming off his skin is sending chirping crickets through my veins and every time I inhale, it's sweet and wild. Melting syrup basting desert sky, sweet.". I suspect that Poppet is a poet because her word choice is very deliberate and evokes interesting visuals. In fact, I even bet she is a good poet and I was impressed with some of the phrases she used (would have been great in a poem). But it was hard to read in a book (imagine reading a 200+ page poem). I found myself finishing the book because the concept was so interesting but wincing as I did it. I am not sorry I read this book. I will not read another book by this author.
Erra, by Poppet, is a book that I read expecting it to fulfill my craving for supernatural beings with a penchant for action. I knew there’d be romance, and sure enough, there’s an interesting love triangle in the mix. And since I’ve read other books by this truly gifted author, I expected her prose to flow on the page. Well, not only did she mesmerize me with fantastic lines, she did an amazing job weaving the storyline so that readers could take more than just a story with them. From her stunning female lead, Sarah, to the men who surrounded her, Dusty and Erra, this book shines while shedding a light on several mysteries of life.
If you’re looking for a read where characters seem to literally jump off the page, then Poppet’s Erra is a must read! From the sensual allure of Sarah and her incredible chemistry with Dusty, to the conflicts with Erra, sensuality and tension were the norm in this excellent book.
I just loved how the author revealed Sarah’s emotions, and peeled back with slow clarity, like a blanket revealing a stunningly beautiful goddess, her vulnerabilities. Erra and Dusty are far more than window dressing. They provided a substance that rocked Sarah to the core, and along the way, opened the reader’s eyes to what Poppet hopes is a new understanding of this thing we call life.
Don’t delay! Get the book and prepare to be amazed!
Knight Chills gives Erra 5 out of 5 magical stars!
Erik’s mother dies, Sarah feels sorry for him, he clings to her and ends up stalking her. Dustin comes to her rescue. After a night of passion with Dustin, Sarah arrives home to find Erik inside the house waiting for her. He makes her feel guilty for forgetting today is his mother’s memorial. Sarah soon finds out Erik is no ordinary man… he toys with her senses and emotions like no other man has before. Erik’s determined to make her love him, to take her under his ‘wing’, but at what cost? This is a wonderfully writing book with beautiful phrasing throughout such as ‘Half of me is trying to climb out my bones backwards. The other half is hypnotized by his glowing skin, and the way his muscles dance when he takes his jeans off.’ Sarah’s emotions are thrown into turmoil when Erik informs her they’ve met before, long ago… I can’t praise this book highly enough, the writer evokes a wide range of emotions in the reader. An absolute must read.
I absolutely loved this book! Poppet has blown me away yet again.
Erra is a fascinating story about love, loss, betrayal and redemption. About being human and the power of love and hate in all it's guises. I loved every single moment of Erra! The characters were full of life, very engaging and the intimate scenes were hot enough to melt ice! Poppet's take on creation was brilliant! With that being said, Erra is not for everyone.
If you're looking for a break from your world, slip into Erra's world, you will not be disappointed. I could go on and on about this story, but I don't want to give anything away. You'll have to find out for yourself! :)
Poppet is why reading is fun. She brings the page to life with her words, and opens up fascinating new worlds with characters you would love to have over for dinner.
So intense! This is a deep word, but Poppet has this intensity to her writing that catches you right around the center of your being and refuses to let go! Erra gave nothing less than this intense hold. Sarah falls for such a sexy guy that comes to her rescue when she was threatened by a stalker. Dustin and Sarah have an instant connection, but Eric shows up and throws their lives into a completely different direction. Once you learn that Eric is really Erra, things fall into place. Complex characters provide a continuous flow throughout the story. They never become "just" the character and they are completely different by the end. Not all relationships are as they appear. Love works in wonderful ways, but it's not always easy. This book shows different views, but it is a great romance/love triangle. Absolutely recommend!
The premise of this book had me intrigued so I downloaded it but then I found myself just as confused as the heroine, Sara...
The things that happened in this book hurt to read. First and foremost, God beat the ever loving crap out of a girl, broke her bones, made her break physically and mentally - all because he loved her too much?
And Sara, also known as Lilit, was created by God for himself, because he wanted a mate that would complete him, decided to forgive him for it - even after he said he would kill Dustin, the guy Sara loves.
I didn't like this book. I'm not even sure why I read the entire book. Maybe I thought the end would bring a sense of completion, but it didn't.
What can I say! Once again Poppet, you have outdone yourself. This book gives us a glimpse at what true love of the divine was meant to be. It explores all the the human emotions that we unknowingly have inherited from the creator. It may have been set in Texas but it is truly Universal. Join Sarah on a journey to self awareness and you just might find yourself there too. You will enjoy this book from the first page and find yourself not able to put it down. And don't be surprised when you reach the end you will be wanting more!!! A totally enjoyable read, from Poppet we can never expect less!
A paranormal romance, mostly overly dramatically written sex scenes, reads like something little old lady spinsters would pick up at the drugstore and hide behind Good Housekeeping. Native American, Christian, and world mythologies are tied together as the main characters are possibly gods or aliens sent to earth and end up being the creators with religions developed around them. Rather confusing, although at the end the author explains how these beings and beliefs compare to biblical writings. I will not be looking for more work by this author.

There's more than meets the eye to this deep dark lusty adventure. Aside from the scorching hotness of the pages, There's soulful passion and a heroine who I'd truly love to know more about. Parts of it are shocking and there are some scenes which might necessitate an icy shower, but it's Poppets wonderful evocative writing that had me flipping the pages. Tension, emotion and killer wit, along with a fascinating insight into 2000 years of religion. Can't wait to read book 2 in the series.
I really don't get all the rave reviews of this book. I didn't enjoy it all that much. This modern feminist retelling of the Lilith story seemed like just another paranormal romance with some theology and politically-correct feminist dogma thrown in toward the end to create some boring spots that really dragged. It appeals to a lot of readers, and you may be one of them, but whatever this book's appeal, I personally just didn't find it.
I am not giving any stars, not because this was not a good story, but because of the religious aspect. I am a Christian and I am thinking I can't go along with throwing God's perfect love in a fiction storyline such a this. I really don't care that the author explained herself quoting scripture, hebrew texts, and other documents that were burned forever ago. MY belief is that if God left it out ofthe bible, it was for a reason. This could have been a good story.
I didn't mind the peculiar biblical paths this book followed, because I categorized it as a fiction. As for the romance I' ll borrow teens' favorite relationship description in Facebook: "it's complicated". Starts as a contemporary romance, ends with the primordial cosmic creation and a love triangle and choices to be made.
This book made me a fan of Poppet. I loved the idea of where we came from.Who we came from. the love triangle was amazing. Great way to heat up the kettle very steamy scenes. It was a movie for my pleasure in my head. great read.
This book was amazing!! I absolutely loved it!! Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. After reading this book I am a total fan of Poppet.I will be reading everything written by Poppet. It's rare to find an Author with such skill and imagination. This Author truly has a gift.
