Oh, please, give me mercy no more, that's a kindness you can't afford / I warn you, babe, each night, as sure as you're born, you'll hear me howling outside your door (It Will Come Back – Hozier).

Like the insatiable hunger the dead come back to life feels towards human flesh, every couple of months or so I get the itch to consume every zombie property in the vicinity. Nothing is safe; books, movies, shows, you name it and I’m there, I’m seated. Well I say that, but the honest truth is that I can’t handle zombie video games because it turns out that watching idiots run from reanimated corpses is a lot different than being the idiot running from reanimated corpses! I was playing this game called Dead Island 2 which by all accounts is a funny and breezy game that’s more parody than an in-depth think piece about the true nature of humanity or whatever, and yet I could barely get through it on easy mode because I can't stand being chased by things. Eek, don't touch me! In fact, it really helped put the actions of dumb protagonists in horror movies that are always fumbling around and tripping on shit in context, because damn… I would act the exact same way! So yeah, I’ve been getting back into this stuff recently, and the fever has gotten so bad that I even caved and started watching those Walking Dead spin off shows like the one where Daryl is stuck in France (the title Daryl in Paris is right there, come on!) or the one with Maggie and Negan going to New York, and you want to know what’s really crazy? I really enjoyed them! Which is wild considering all the trash talk I’ve had over this property over the years, but something about the change in scenery, the world-building resembling Fallout more than anything, and the tighter focus on a select few characters really clicked with me. Also, these shows find new and fun zombie scenarios to put the characters in, and let's be real, that's all we're really here for anyway. It’s funny because if you’ve been around me for at least two minutes, then you’d know that I think Dave Filoni is a fake director and a hack writer that will bring Star Wars to a new low, but I would hardly call him the worst writer working in the business today. Nope, that honor goes to the the show runner and big shot who oversees the Walking Dead property, Scott Gimple. He's the worst of the worst! So for me to sit here and tell you that these Walking Dead off-shoots are actually good, you need to know that it comes from my heart and soul! Besides, when you consume enough zombie media, you kind of have to come to terms with the general quality that you’re going to get, and the sad fact is that the confines of the genre doesn't allow much leeway for nuanced story telling.

Sure, we could talk about how The Last of Us is elevated to the point where it's offensive to denigrate it to a simple zombie story considering it “focuses on the human drama” or whatever, but guess what? Literally every zombie story does that now, so it’s hardly rising above everybody else when they're all reading from the same cue cards! [Insert Toy Story 2 meme of all those Buzz Lightyears here]. That’s why even though I find zombie stories that dabble in suspicion and the fall of civilized society fine and dandy, the ones that just have fun with the concept like Dead Island or Left 4 Dead are really what the peak of what the genre can be. I’m just saying, it's hardly a super deep think piece about the base nature of humanity being inherently evil when you need to add layers upon layers of asterisks in order for the narrative to get to the place where you can even make such a point. Sure, obviously people would be looking out for themselves if society suddenly collapsed and the living dead are out here chasing and trying to eat people, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that works as a thesis statement about “what people would really do in a time of societal collapse.” I think people would help each other! Er, for the first few months at least. Don’t get me wrong, I always welcome whenever a story tries to reach for a deeper meaning, I really do, but after the millionth one of these “humans are the real monsters” zombie narratives, it’s hard not to roll my eyes whenever these get real pretentious with it. It’s like when those people on Bluesky spend all live-long day posting about politics as if there’s any other reason to go on that site outside of looking at gay pornography. We are here for the gay porn! Um, not that that’s a reflection of me or anything ha ha. Sorry writers, but zombie stories are actually first and foremost about the zombies! Anyway, Quarantine Terror is the third installment of this Infected City series, but you probably wouldn’t notice going into it because each book blends together in the sense that they each cover so little ground story wise that reading them is like eating one popcorn and calling it quits. I mean, that’s not to say I didn’t enjoy this, because I did (three stars is a good rating from me). In fact, I found that Quarantine Terror was this series finally hitting its stride, as we finally start to see the cast of characters interact, and I thought it was fun how not all of those interactions were friendly like the tight knit group portrayed in the likes of The Walking Dead. Seriously, everybody in that show was so noble and self-sacrificing that it was a welcome respite when they introduced a cowardly snitch priest!

On that point, rather than The Walking Dead, I'd say that Infected City is more in line with the Netflix show called Black Summer where it follows the point-of-view of several different survivors who are all kind of awful and all trying to escape the terrible situation they’ve found themselves in the middle of. And even though it frequently shows how awful people are in this highly stressful situations, the main threat is always going to be the flesh-eating hordes of monsters come back to life. I mean, the shows not that good, but as someone who enjoys the first two Resident Evil movies, I'm hardly one to look for Martin Scorsese levels of quality in my zombie stories. I guess when you’re in this deep with a certain genre, there’s a certain comfort that comes with the knowledge that a new story is adhering to the basics without needing to try reinventing the wheel, you know? I’ve definitely already talked about this, but classic zombie tropes are so hilarious to me that I would actively act out the "cowardly spinless guy" whenever me and my friend used to play the Nazi Zombies game mode in Call of Duty. Like, were were out here closing doors on fellow survivors and hoarding med packs instead of sharing with those who needed them, all playing up the whole “every man for himself” kind of thing until it was just us two trying to find a way different ways to betray each other. Mind you, this is not advisable if you actually wanted to win the game and we were basically just throwing, but nonetheless, I'm just following what I've seen in the movies! And let me tell you, I thought it was really funny to come across this exact “Paul Reiser trying to save his own skin in Aliens” scene while reading this. That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for! I guess my point is that I enjoyed this book a lot because even though you can't say it's doing anything new with the genre and is instead a rather run-of-the-mill zombie story, it still stands out to me because of the fact that its focus is entirely on having an excitingly gory good time. Sure, the characters are lacking and the plot is Olympus Has Fallen levels of generic, but Quarantine Terror more than makes up for its shortcomings in sheer atmosphere and the “back-to-the-basics” approach that ironically makes it unique against the backdrop all these other deep thinking zombie stories with an obvious disdain for the very thing that makes them interesting. Which is, you know, the living dead! There are… uh… zombies in this zombie story, right? To that, I'm happy to report that Quarantine Terror's answer is an unapologetic yes!

"Time and thinking were a deadly combination in stressful situations. The longer a person dwelled on their thoughts, the more likely they were to do something reckless out of desperation and impatience."

3.5 rounded up. This one isn't as strong as the first 2 installments in the series.
I might be slightly unfair because there's one zombpoc trope that I'm really super tired of in this one. Considering where things seem to be heading, I trust that Bacic has something up his sleeve that's going to redeem that in the next installment/s.

What's up with the s💩💩t?!? Literally ... just why?!? What kinda twisted f**k writes something like that into their story?!? So vile and ... for what purpose?!? A FULL star off for that! Prob'ly should be two stars off, but I really liked everything else about this one.

Book 3 and I'm fully invested in this series. Each character arc is unique but also understandable. I'm sure these are exactly all the ways human beings would behave during a zombie apocalypse. Especially Ben, who gave me nightmares.

3.5

This series continues to be a ride! I appreciated the pacing of this one and enjoyed the action as each character encounters more of the infected and they navigate away from their home base. With the exception of Daniel at the lab and Krista at home tending to her son. That being said, these two have some obstacles in their location to overcome. We also start to see some of our main characters meeting up outside as they move to the military checkpoint.

Speaking of that, how did people who are not infected not notice these huge walls around the city? I mean, I get that running and defending yourself from flesh eating zombies covered in sh*t does come first. But really? I feel like that would be one thing I'd notice! I mean that right there has me saying "hmm." Something shady going on there.

The timeline of our characters meeting seems a bit off to me too. Unless I'm getting their locations and individual timelines wrong...

I'm hoping in book 4 we get a bit more to the "why" of this situation. At the half-way point, I feel like it needs to start coming together.

Finally, Ben's a d*ck.

Not as good as book 1 or 2 and of course the one thing I find super irritating in all “zombie” books. Ben.

Fantastic

This was so freakin' awesome. As the story goes on, your anxiety climbs with the characters. This is a sure sign of a great author

“You don’t need to be scared,” he whispered into her ear.

Survivors working their way closer to the checkpoints are about to begin colliding as their stories begin to entwine. As the days bleed into nights since the outbreak started, Krista has waited for her husband Eric to return. With no signs he'll ever be coming home, she's tasked with keeping their son Nelson alive as he begins transitioning into the monster with bloodshot eyes. As he lurks and stares from random places in the house, she thought she was safe to take a nap until she wakes to him growling and snarling over her. Chasing her through the house, she manages to overpower her young son and stuff him into a locked closet. Unsure what to do, she breaks down into sobs as she grieves both her husband and now her son. Daniel and Melissa are creating a tighter bond as they make further discoveries through a brain biopsy of Richard, where they discover hundreds of parasites all moving in the tissue. With anxiety and fears running higher they slept together to help blow off some of the pent up emotions. Trapped in an infested hospital, they know HQ isn't coming to save them, instead they fully understand their time is quickly slipping away.

“I want in. Safe. I want in,” his raspy, muffled voice came from the other side of the door.

Taking shelter in the cathedral pushes Angela, James and Ricky almost apart as they disagree with their next moves. Eager to move and make it to the checkpoints, Angela is resentful at the thought of spending even a single night sleeping there. Ricky, young and exhausted, wants nothing more than to fuel up on the pew for a few days. Caught in the middle, James pushes towards Angela believing she can help keep him safe. This is when Ben makes it into the cathedral and his true colors begin shining even more. Resentful at anyone who disagrees with his survival methods, he feels no remorse for leaving his wife Melissa amongst the dead. When anxiety rose when one of the people shifted, somebody opened the door and allowed the monsters to pour inside, slaying everyone but a few. With the Priest, James, Ricky and Angela almost safely behind the tunnel doors, they allowed Ben inside who quickly denied access to the remaining people running for their lives. Watching the. Be torn to shreds, everyone understands the red eyes may not be the most deadly. Unbeknownst to them, Ben had already had an encounter with Heather where his devious mind has ideas for her. Luckily, she managed to run and put a safe distance between the two of them as she tries to keep her sister safe. Team Alpha is slowly dissolving as they grieve the death of Murphy from the schoolhouse. Seeing Captain Reynolds become more violent and trigger happy the remaining members; Shepherd, Lincoln and Pierce know their unity is soon to be gone. When they finally breach the hospital, Pierce mistook doctor Kidnar for an infected and shot him in the stomach. Confronted by Reynolds, things are about to become far more interested as the captain and the doctor seemingly knows one another.

I now know for sure what we’re dealing with. We fucked up. You need to leave the city right away.

I've been giving a commentary. But not an actual review.
This zombie series has various pov's:
Krista - A mom whose 5 year old son has changed. Krista was left alone by her husband who went to get help for their son.
Pierce - A soldier returning to the town that holds bad memories for a deceiving mission.
Ben - A smug, smarmy pos who would sacrifice his own mom to get over. Once there are no laws in place a lot of Bens would emerge.
Dan - A scientist who might hold the key.
Heather - A young woman who has ventured out into the zombie infested streets with her autistic young sister Abby.
James - A young man who joins up with other survivors and like everyone else is trying to stay alive.
I have a feeling all the survivors will meet up at some point. Two already have.
There are zombie chase scenes and a little character development. A few of the characters are slightly fleshed out.
All in all a solid zombie series.

Blood lust and mayhem

Heather has to contend with her difficult sister, the infected and Ben whose intentions are malign. Somehow she is coping. Daniel is attracted to his colleague Melissa but has to protect them from the infected within the premises. Pierce and his team's quest to find the doctor and his research, is fraught with danger as the infected are getting more maniacal and difficult to control. Krista has to protect her sick son but has he also become one of the infected? The whole town is in danger of being quarantined.  The author highlights the anguish and predatory characteristics of the characters as well as the darkness surrounding the town. Scary.

Not as good as books 1 and 2. The scientists figured out what’s causing the outbreak, but we don’t get to know. Ben is the worst. I’m also wondering if the older sister (I forget her name, unfortunately) would just be honest with her autistic little sister about what’s going on, wouldn’t that make things so much easier for her, rather than coddling her and creating lies that only end up causing frustration for everyone?

I’m listening to the audiobooks, and since the next one isn’t available yet, I’ll pick this back up when it comes out. But after this one, I’m in no rush.

There is a real sense of being trapped in this book with action closing in around you. There was one character that I really came to dislike in this book. My surprise at the military unit increased including as to the way they behave, their kit and their tactics - it seemed so very unusual (and not in a good way) as compared to other depictions I've experienced in the past. Still enjoyable and ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.

Terror

Pierce and his team are in the infected zone trying to rescue a doctor . The other survivors are making discoveries about the outbreak. What caused it? Can they trust the people they are with? Will they be rescued, or will the town be destroyed? Fast paced tale with great characters.

The only reason I can’t give it 5 stars is because I’m super confused about the timing. Some characters fell asleep for days, some only one day, then they run into each other and I’m like what timeline is everybody on? But the story is great! Could be more clearer descriptive writing but i really like the story!!!

action is good but moving slow

I just think the story is moving slowly but it is still interesting. Getting the full version of the story is also cool. I’m still interested to see where this goes even if I feel the book is short. Good thing the rest of the books are out or I’d be disappointed .

So many stupid character decisions in this one, the virus- oh wait sorry “bAcTeRiA” has been completely unexplained and I’m so confused about how people become “infected” when apparently everyone has this bacteria in them??? Is this a biological attack?? This series better start explaining wtf this is because I’m TIRED

Nice Follow-Up

Book 3 is a very good follow up for the other books. The cliffhanger ending is absolutely what makes me head over to get the next book. Mr Bacic, you most certainly are able to write zombie novels!

As the series continues all is not what it seems. Many of the characters that are struggling with the infected "loonies" are now having to also deal with surviving people and agencies whose only concerns are their own agendas.

Great book

Boris is the best horror writer that I have read. This is a great story with a great cast of characters. Not your normal zombie story. I recommend reading this to all that love fiction and gore. Can't wait to start the next book.

Unlikeable Characters

I can't believe I'm still reading this series. The unlikeable characters just keep getting worse. At this point I don't think it can get any worse.
