Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.

Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.

Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.

COMMENTS Very cute series. In this one it is Valentine's Day and the Clue Crew is at Farmer Fran Barnyard Buddies (think Build-a-Bear). They have each chosen their stuffed animals a sheep for Nancy, a horse for Bess and a cow for George. Collette (Cowlette) wants the last cow that was chosen by George and there is a bit of a scuffle. Bess receives a less than loving valentine and believes it is from her cousin George. She leaves the Clue Crew. Nancy and George are on the case to prove to Bess that the valentine was not sent by George. Fun read!

Cute books for girls who love a mystery. I was never a big Nancy Drew fan until my daughter started reading them. I guess its safe to say I'll be reading more of the Nancy Drew Series. Happy Reading especially when you read it with your daughter.

This book was great. It also was funny, interesting, and cool! And I wonder who
would put chewed up bubble gum on the bottom of their desk? That is just gross!!!!

This is a cute installment in the series where one of the girls gets a nasty valentine! Bess and George fight over it and Bess leaves the clue crew, leaving George and Nancy to figure out the mystery solo. This one was the most "guilty party" as opposed to "misunderstanding" but it was still so great to be back with the girls!

This was a fun story, even though there was friendship troubles.

Things to be aware of in “Valentine’s Day Secret”

Language:
- 1 “holy cow”
- 1 “stupid”
- 2 “dumb”

Additional Notes:
- A girl takes another girl’s stuffed animal and runs away with it.

I feel bad for George because someone gave a mean valentine to Bess, and she thinks it is George. Thankfully they find out it wasn't George.

The 12th book in this series. The story revolves around the three girls going to a place like Build-A-Bear (which is really, really neat and a lot of fun to go to) and making stuffed animals. The story starts off, though, with Bess getting a nasty valentine and being sure that it is from George.

Then there's a problem at the store when someone tries to steal one of the group's stuffed animals, and more trouble with a young punk-in-training causes problems of his own. The outcome is Bess and George no longer being friends.

This leads Nancy and George to work together to find out who wrote the nasty valentine and there is no lack of suspects. The other problem, of course, is trying to determine if the Clue Crew has finally come to an end, or if a way can be found to keep it going. A decent story.

We have really enjoyed the books in the Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew series overall, but we didn't really like this one very much.

The girls in the Clue Crew get into an argument that is very contrived and implausible. The spite with which Bess treats her cousin is not nice and the friendship is turned on and off and back on again like a lightswitch. Interesting, but predictable mystery.

I read this book.
I like that Bess and George became friends again.
I don't like that Bess thought George put a note in the pocket of the cow.
It was a good book.
