Amelia works as a lady’s companion to the Dowager Duchess of Ashingdale. At two and twenty she’s a spinster and has no hope of marrying especially after her fall from high society. But all that changes when she encounters the dowager’s handsome grandson! Miss Amelia Mason is the daughter of a late baron. Her late father was nothing but a wastrel and squandered the family’s fortune on drinking and gambling. Three years ago, Amelia had just made her come out when her father passed away from alcohol poisoning. Amelia and her twin siblings were left destitute due to their father having racked up substantial debts. With their family’s reputation ruined, Amelia and her siblings were left with no other choice but to go live with their Aunt Hazel in the countryside. Robert Ashcroft—The Marquess of Levendale—has been tasked with taking over several of his father’s ducal responsibilities. Robert and his father are in the process of sealing a business deal with the Earl of Stafford when they receive a letter from his grandmother inviting them to Ashingdale Estate for the summer. Robert hasn’t seen his beloved grandmother in the last year and is granted permission by his father to go visit her. The last thing Robert expects is to fall for his grandmother’s beautiful lady’s companion. It’s love at first sight for Robert and Amelia. Will they get their happily ever after or will outside forces tear them apart? Get it Now Free!
A clean story. A ladies father dies leaving large debts and so she removes with her twin siblings to an Aunts and becomes a companion to a dowager duchess, and tbe grand son comes to visit. It is a short story and it is likeable, but it is often lightweight and confusing. Firstly I am not sure a companion to a dowager duchess would be living in a cottage. Surely she would live in? There’s mention of her frocks being worn - but she is a with a duchess all day, so I think she would have to have much better frocks. Timings seemed confused - there’s a garden party she apparently hosts ( really as a companion?), she makes sure all is tidied up, while walking home envies the ladies who attended as they would probably be in bed, and then promptly washed a load of plates and makes dinner! If she is making dinner then it can’t be that late and I am sure the ladies from the garden party would not be in bed. It also seemed the garden party invites went out about the night before! We also had baskets of pomegranates at the village fair - they are not really grown here, and the Victorians thought them inedible, so no doubt the regency period did, they would be unusual at a village fair. However, despite all this I found the story likeable. I think this maybe the author’s first book. I will certainly try her next and hope she can iron out these issues.
A fallen lady through no fault of her own and a young Lord chafing under the rigid pressure of his father wanting him to take over his responsibilities and business dealings. For his father everything was about business and getting the best deal with influential partners and he expected the same from Robert. Amelia’s father had gambled away everything and had lost his baronency through his foolishness, leaving Amelia and two younger siblings bereft and penniless. When they met it was almost like a fairytale but one Amelia was sure wasn’t for her. Clean. The book kept jumping between different points of view, and the prose is a bit overdone, but overall it’s an enjoyable read.
I really enjoyed and loved this amazing book. Wonderful characters and very interesting and inspiring story. It was absolutely amazing how after all the sadness of loss of their father and their livelihood Amelia could be so strong. I loved the extended epilogue with its beautiful happy ever ending. Definitely a must read and highly recommended. Congratulations on your amazing writing talent.
The Marquess and the gentle lady and plans are a foot. This book is why I enjoy watching historical romance. Friendship and romance, warmth and humor. Bravo!
I received a free copy of this book via BookFunnel and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Robert and Amelia A new author for me but I really enjoyed reading her story. I liked her main characters they were both very strong, family minded and it was lovely getting to know them. There is a bit drama but overall it is a sweet love story. I look forward to reading more of her work.
Amelia and her twin siblings, Lucas and Lily, live with her aunt Hazel. Amelia's family had fallen from society when all that they owned was confiscated to pay her father's gambling debts! Amelia was hired as a lady's companion to the Dowager Duchess of Ashingdale, a position her aunt Hazel recommended Amelia for after she retired.
Amelia has a good relationship with the Dowager Duchess. As a lady's companion Amelia did everything with Dorothy. Dorothy treated Amelia as if she were her own daughter! The relationship they share is touching.
The Dutchess sees Amelia as a perfect match for her grandson, Lord Robert Levendale! Amelia doesn't feel that she will ever marry well after her fall from Society. If you believe in love at first sight this is a perfect story for you!
