The Nine Keys of Magic

Rate this book
Michael’s life was forever changed by the brutal murder of his wife. As the reality of her death registers, Michael feels a strange force at work inside of him. Seeing nine ominous doors in his mind, six of them burst open, he hears unfamiliar words whispered. Repeating those words, Michael finds himself, unwittingly avenging his wife by incinerating the killer.
Little did Michael know that the opening of those doors would also be the opening to a new world for him, one of magic and legend. Michael must journey to this other world to help defend the magic that is his birthright.
The magi of Kantwell, along with the human and dwarven races, a handful of elven guard, and the elite Avari warriors, now stand against the combined might of the trolls, ogres, and weres, under the ruthless leadership of the powerful wizard Mortow and the magi who follow him.
Will Michael’s unique magic be enough to save Kantwell and keep the races from falling into slavery or will Mortow be able to manipulate him to assure victory over all of Thelona?

The idea behind this book sounded interesting, and it was free, so I gave it a chance. I am so glad I did.

The story is captivating. It opens with a mysterious event, and slowly over the course of the book, the event is explained. But each answer raises more and more questions, keeping me reading, wondering what would happen next.

The setting for the book is well fleshed out. The races, and the relationship between them, were developed well enough. I am sure more will be revealed in later books, but this book is a good start.

And then there is the ending. With two huge cliffhangers. ARGH!!!! Why, why do authors like to torture their readers? :)

There is one negative, though. Although there are chapter breaks, there are no breaks when the scene changes within a chapter. This can cause confusion when suddenly different characters are speaking, or the first words said make no sense in the context of the old conversation. There are also many places where a characters comments will be continued on a new line, as if someone else had started speaking. Again, annoying, but not enough to be a detriment.

This is a simple but intriguing novel. I wish it was longer so that I could enjoy it more. It used a unique concept about magic although it wasn't very complicated. I have read this novel many times and is a favourite of mine among new emerging authors. What I absolutely hate is how long it's taking Timothy to get out the second novel. I remember reading this novel when it came out. At the time nearly a dozen other really good authors cam out in the fantasy genre. Among those most have published at least 3 to 4 novels by now some have published as much as 6 or 7 novels but Timothy is still stuck on finishing his second novel. Truth be told I wish I had the fortitude to not read his book when it does eventually come out but I am a reading addict so I don't think I would be able to keep that promise. Another thing I hate is that it's only on Amazon. The books you buy from amazon is not really being bought but are in fact rented. Amazon also has problems about black listing and blocking people that it suspects are linked to another black listed person. No idea how it does it but they randomly block people and confiscate the kindle books that we RENTED NOT BOUGHT from them. Amazon has this weird sole right thing going on where authors can't publish their books on other sites. I think it's all bogus. Iwas also one of those unfortunate victims that somehow fell in the blacklist and then I found that some books can't be bought except amazon. This story has potential but it also has alot of problems.
