After earning the B.L. degree he started his career as an Advocate.Later he started his work as a sub-editor in The Free Press Journal in Mumbai. He was a contributing cartoonist to Shankar's Weekly. He is also credited with the first Malayalam translation of Bram Stoker's Dracula apart from translating Sherlock Holmes novels into Malayalam.
In 1957, he entered the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).The memoirs of his long career as a bureaucrat are narrated in his work Service Story – Ente IAS Dinangal.

Those who have dealt with bureaucracy atleast once in India will know all the nuances of the word Frustration. Aravind Adiga I am told has written about it & numerous movies highlight the degree of corruption in India. Yet we go on, unaffected and non chalant we walk into these spider webs again and again.
Malayattoor Ramakrishnan was a senior administrator with the Government of India for over and above a decade. All his skills of observation are clear as the morning sunlight in your eyes when he describes how the great juggernaut of government machinery works. He adopts the time tested method of story telling where in he tells the story of ordinary individuals caught in a struggle against the machinery of the state. The protagonists keep shifting from a wet-behind-the-ears rookie to a world weary bureaucrat. Greed,lust,insanity, grief and desperation all act their roles with elan in one of the most interesting works about the machinations of the Kerala Government.

I had read Malayattoor's 'Yanthram' and Thakazhi's 'Enippadikal' back to back last month considering the similarity of their themes, to compare how two of Malayalam's popular writers approach the subject. Out of the two, Malayattoor has the added advantage of being an insider in the civil services, an advantage he uses in the parts of the narrative which deals with the inner workings of the governance system, which he refers to as the machine (yanthram).
The one characteristic of this system is its ability to chip away the rough edges and the signs of independence from the eager new entrants and slowly make them an inherent nut, bolt or gear wheel of this machinery, which cannot move about on its own. In 'Yanthram', the protagonist Balachandran is someone who shapes himself to fit in rather quickly, while James is a study in contrast, suffering personal losses for standing up for what he believes is right.
In both these books, we see the protagonists slowly compromising on whatever remains of their values on the way up the ladder. Infact, both of them begin their careers after making well-thought out, and somewhat selfish choices in their personal lives, choices which they are sure would aid them in growth in their professional life. Kesavapillai is the more selfish and unrepentant out of the two. We see him turning into some kind of monster with each of his successes through devious means further emboldening him for more.
Both books dwell at length on the personal lives of these civil servants, while the professional part takes a backseat, which I saw as a drawback of both works. Lengthy internal monologues of these characters, of them ruminating on the various choices they have made, punctuate both books. But, thankfully, both authors do not attempt to rationalise or whitewash the decisions of their protagonists, rather project them as the majorly flawed men that both are. Both novels are recommended reading for those who blindly valourise civil servants, and look down upon politicians based on the understanding that they have gained from mainstream Malayalam films like 'The King'.
While much of 'Enippadikal' is set in the pre-independence era and parts of it after the formation of the first Communist Government in Kerala, with Kesavapillai joining in the lower levels as a clerk and moving up all the way to the Chief Secretary post, 'Yanthram' is set in the initial decades after independence. Both books have female characters, who are initially seen as faceless pushovers, but who gain in strength as the narrative progresses, and raises uncomfortable questions to the scheming bureaucrats who have become their partners.
In comparison to the classic 'Kayar', Thakazhi's 'Enippadikal' would stand a notch below, but in comparison to 'Yanthram', it might be a step or two above, even considering the fact that Malayattoor wrote the work as an insider.

നോവലിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്ക് വളരെ വലിയ ആഴത്തിലുള്ള വിശകലനം നൽകിയാണ് കഥാകൃത്ത് കഥ മുന്നോട്ട് കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്നത്.

A page turner, where service story painted using true colours in Malayatoor's own canvas. Adjustments, Negotiations, betrayals,complex and ego among bureaucrats is given life using good characters. All emotions is been mixed well to prepare a perfect salad. Starting with Balachandran's inferiority complex, his journey through his IAS training days protraits what all a young officer have to face early in his service.... What happens when bureaucrats bends their spine to please the govt machinery..... what happens if they dont. James is one man of steel, who have to struggle because of his ideologies, Ani James is the perfect wife you would love to know. Shekara pillai,Sujatha, Anitha, Devapalan etc are the other main characters who dive this fiction.... All characters got their own reasons & justifications for their own acts....... A definite treat from Mr Malayatoor an Ex IAS.

നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തിയ നോവൽ. ഭരണയന്ത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളെ വായനക്കാർക്ക് അനുഭവവേദ്യമാക്കും എന്ന് കരുതിയ എനിക്ക് തെറ്റി. ഉദ്യോഗസംബന്ധമായ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ഒരു വഴിക്ക് പരാമർശിക്കപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട് എങ്കിലും നോവലിന്റെ കാതൽ അതല്ല.
നോവലിന്റ ഏറിയ പങ്കും (പ്രധാനമായി) രണ്ടു ഐ. ഏ. എസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുടെ കുടുംബ ജീവിതത്തിലെ സംഭവങ്ങളാണ്. അതും ഏറെക്കുറെ പൈങ്കിളി സ്വഭാവത്തിലുള്ളവ.
ലളിതമായ ആഖ്യാനശൈലി ആയതു കൊണ്ട് മുഷിയാതെ വായിച്ചു പോകാം, അത്ര തന്നെ. വെറുതെ കൊല്ലാൻ സമയം ധാരാളം ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ വായിക്കാൻ ആലോചിക്കാവുന്ന നോവൽ.

മലയാറ്റൂർ രാമകൃഷ്ണൻ എന്ന പേര് തന്നെ മതി ഈ ഒരു പുസ്തകം വായിക്കാൻ .അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഒരുപാട് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട നോവലുകളാണ് ആറാം വിരലും , പൊന്നിയും , വേരുകളും എല്ലാം .അതിൽ നിന്നെല്ലാം ഒരുപാട് വ്യത്യസ്തമാണ് യന്ത്രം .യന്ത്രം എന്ന പുസ്തകം എനിക്ക് നിർദേശിച്ചത് എന്റെ കൂട്ടുകാരിയിലൂടെ അവളുടെ അമ്മൂമ്മയാണ് .ഒരുപാട് പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വായിച്ചിട്ടുള്ള ആ അമ്മൂമ്മയുടെ ഒരുപാടിഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട നോവലാണ് യന്ത്രമെന്നറിഞ്ഞപ്പോഴാണ് ഇതു വായിക്കാനുള്ള ആഗ്രഹമേറിയത് .വളരെ താല്പര്യത്തോടെ വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയ ഒരു നോവൽ ,ഇടയ്ക്കു വെച്ചു ഒഴുക്കൻ മട്ടിലേക്ക് വായനയെ കൊണ്ടുപോയി ..ഒരുപക്ഷെ കഥയുടെ സങ്കീർണത കൊണ്ടാവാം .എന്നാൽ നിമിഷങ്ങൾക്കകം വീണ്ടും വായന രസമുള്ളതായി മാറി .ഒരുപാട് കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾ മാറി മാറി വരുന്നു .കഥാസന്ദർഭങ്ങൾ മാറുന്നു . മലയാറ്റൂരിന്റെ എഴുത്തിന്റെ ശൈലി ഒരുപാട് ഇഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടു .ഭരണയന്ത്രത്തിന്റെ ചുക്കാൻ പിടിക്കുന്ന ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥന്മാരുടെ ജീവിത കഥകൾ അതിന്റെതായ രീതിയിൽ തന്നെ അവതരിപ്പിക്കാനുള്ള കഴിവ് ഒരുപക്ഷെ ആ രംഗത്ത് പ്രവർത്തിച്ചതിനാലാവാം .യന്ത്രത്തെ എനിക്ക് പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തിയ കൂട്ടുകാരിയെ നന്ദി യോടെ ഓർക്കുന്നു .അനിതയും ,സുജാതയും ,ജയിംസും ,ബാലചന്ദ്രനും ,ശേഖരപിള്ളയും ,ആനിയും എല്ലാം മനസിൽ മായാതെ തന്നെയുണ്ട് .

ലേബർ റൂമിലെ ഒഴിവുനേരങ്ങളിൽ പുസ്തകം വായിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടോ എന്നു ഞാൻ ചോദിച്ചാൽ ലേബർ റൂമിലതിന് ഒഴിവുനേരങ്ങൾ കിട്ടാറുണ്ടോ എന്ന് ആരെങ്കിലും മറുത്തു ചോദിക്കുമെന്നെനിക്കറിയാം. എന്നാലും, ഒരു പ്രൈവറ്റ് മെഡിക്കൽ കോളേജിന്റെ തിരക്കുകൾക്കിടയിൽ ശ്വാസം വിടാൻ ഇത്തിരി സമയമൊക്കെ ഞങ്ങൾക്കു കിട്ടുന്നുണ്ടെന്നു കൂട്ടിക്കോ. ഒരു പ്രസവത്തിനും വേറൊരു പ്രസവത്തിനുമിടയിൽ, ഒരു contraction നോക്കലിനും വേറൊരു contraction നോക്കലിനുമിടയിൽ, വീണുകിട്ടുന്ന ഇത്തിരി നേരത്ത് പ്രസവത്തിന്റെ ഒന്നാം ഘട്ടത്തിനും രണ്ടാം ഘട്ടത്തിനുമിടക്കുവച്ച് ഒരു പുസ്തകം വെറുതേ മറിക്കണം... വായനയുടെ കൊടുമുടികേറുന്ന നേരത്ത് അവിടെയൊരു പെണ്ണ് വേദനയുടെ കൊടുമുടി കേറുന്നതറിഞ്ഞ് ഓടിച്ചെല്ലണം... ഗർഭപാത്രത്തിന്റെ സങ്കോചങ്ങളും യോനീമുഖത്തിന്റെ വികാസങ്ങളും കണക്കാക്കുന്നതിനിടയിൽ ഒരു ഭരണയന്ത്രത്തിന്റെ പൽച്ചക്രങ്ങൾ തിരിയുന്നതെങ്ങനെയെന്നു മനക്കണക്കുകൂട്ടണം. പേറ്റുനോവിൽ പുളയുന്ന വയറിൽ കൈവച്ചു നിൽക്കുമ്പോൾ ഇവൾ സുജാതയാണെന്നും ഇവളുടെ ഉള്ളിലിളകുന്നതു ശശിയാണെന്നും സങ്കൽപിച്ചുനോക്കണം. പേറ്റുമുറിക്കു പുറത്തു കാത്തുനിൽക്കുന്നവരിൽ അനിതയെയോ ശേഖരപിള്ളയെയോ ബാലചന്ദ്രനെയോ തിരയണം. അമ്മക്കരച്ചിലിൽ നിന്ന് ഉണ്ണിക്കരച്ചിലിലേക്കുള്ള ദൂരം ഓടിത്തീർക്കുന്ന തത്രപ്പാടിനിടയിൽ ഡോക്ടറിൽ നിന്നു ബ്യൂറോക്രാറ്റിലേക്കുള്ള ദൂരമോർത്തു ചിരിക്കണം. ചില ഭ്രാന്തൻ ചിന്തകളിൽ ദേവപാലനോടു സമരസപ്പെട്ട് ഈ പേറ്റുമുറിയൊരു വലിയ ഗർഭപാത്രമാണെന്നു കവിത തോന്നണം. പെട്ടെന്നൊരു ജോലിപറയുന്ന സീനിയറിന്റെ മുഖത്ത് ഡോക്ടർ ഗ്രിഫിത്ത്സിനെ കാണുകയും എല്ലാ ഡോക്ടർമാരും ഡോക്ടർ ഗ്രിഫിത്ത്സാണെന്നും അവർ ദേവപാലന്മാരുടെ കവിതകളെ ഗർഭപാത്രത്തിനകത്തുവച്ചുതന്നെ അരുംകൊല ചെയ്യുകയാണെന്നും ചിന്തിക്കണം. അങ്ങനെയങ്ങനെയിരിക്കുമ്പോ ലേബർ റൂമിലെ എല്ലാ ബഹളങ്ങൾക്കും നടുവിൽ വച്ച് എന്റെ തലയൊരു പൂച്ചട്ടിയാണെന്നും അതു നിറച്ചും പല നിറത്തിലുള്ള പത്തുമണിപ്പൂക്കൾ പൂത്തു നിൽക്കുവാണെന്നും, അതിനു ചുറ്റും കുറേ പൂമ്പാറ്റകൾ പറക്കുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും, ഏതോ ഒരു വണ്ട് നിർത്താതെ മൂളുന്നുണ്ടെന്നും എനിക്കു ചുമ്മാതങ്ങു തോന്നും. 'ഹൗസ് സർജാ' എന്ന പരുക്കൻ വിളികൾക്കു പിന്നാലെയോടുമ്പോഴും ഈ തോന്നലുകൾക്കൊടുവിൽ ഞാൻ പതിവുപോലെ തലചുറ്റി താഴെവീഴുമോ എന്ന് ഉള്ളിന്റെയുള്ളിലെ സ്ഥിരബുദ്ധിയുള്ള ഞാൻ വേവലാതിപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ടാവും...

ബാലചന്ദ്രനെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയാണ് കഥ തുടങ്ങുന്നതെങ്കിലും ജെയിംസ് എന്ന കഥാപാത്രമാണ് ഇതിൽ മുഴച്ചു നിൽക്കുന്നത്. കാർ ഡ്രൈവറുടെ മകനായ ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ IAS നേടിയെങ്കിലും സ്വന്തം അച്ഛന്റെ ജോലി അയാളിൽ എപ്പോഴും അപകർഷതാബോധം ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. തുടക്കത്തിൽ നല്ല രീതിയിൽ പ്രവർത്തിച്ചുവെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് ഒരു താളപ്പിഴ കാണാൻ കഴിയും. Assistant collector trainee ആയി ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന സമയത്ത് കളക്ടർ ആയ ശേഖരപിള്ളയുടെ മക്കൾ സുജാതയും അനിതയും ബാലചന്ദ്രനെ സ്വന്തമാക്കാൻ മത്സരിച്ചെങ്കിലും നറുക്ക് വീഴുന്നത് മൂത്തവളായ സുജാതയ്ക്ക് ആയിരുന്നു. അതോടെ അനിതയുടെ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ താളം തെറ്റുന്നു. അത്ര നാളും നല്ല വ്യക്തിത്വത്തിന് ഉടമയായ ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ അത് നഷ്ടപ്പെടുത്തുന്നതാണ് തുടർന്ന് കാണുന്നത്. സ്ത്രീലമ്പടനായ ജയശങ്കറും പ്ലാന്ററുടെ മകനായ കുര്യനും ഉന്നതങ്ങൾ കയറിപ്പിടിക്കുന്നത് ബാലചന്ദ്രനിൽ അസൂയ ഉളവാക്കി. നിഷ്പക്ഷതയോടെ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന ജെയിംസാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകത്തിൽ ഏറ്റവും നല്ലവനായി എനിക്ക് തോന്നിയത്. ഐഎഎസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുടെ ജോലിഭാരവും മാറിവരുന്ന ഭരണകൂടത്തിന് അനുസരിച്ച് മാറുന്ന അവരുടെ ജീവിതവും ഒക്കെ ഇതിൽ തെളിഞ്ഞു കാണാം. എന്നാലും ജെയിംസിന്റെ വ്യക്തിജീവിതവും മകനായ ആൻറണിയും വായനക്കാരിൽ ദുഃഖം ഉളവാക്കുന്നു. ആവശ്യത്തിലേറെ വലിച്ചുനീട്ടി എന്നൊരു തോന്നൽ ഉണ്ടാക്കാം.

ഞാൻ ഒരു സർക്കാർ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനാണ്. ഒരേ പാതയിൽ നീങ്ങിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന സഹപ്രവർത്തകൻ കൂടിയായ ഒരു സുഹൃത്ത് ഈയിടെ സ്ഥലം മാറ്റം ലഭിച്ച് മറ്റൊരു ജില്ലയിലേക്ക് പറിച്ചു നടപ്പെട്ടതിന്റെ ദുഃഖഭാരവും പേറിയിരിക്കുന്ന വ്യക്തിയാണ്. സമാന്തരമായ രണ്ട് പാതകളിലേക്ക് നീങ്ങിയ ഞങ്ങളുടെ സർവീസ് ഭാവി ഇനിയെന്താകുമെന്നറിയാനുള്ള ജിജ്ഞാസയിലിരിക്കെ ആണ് ഭാര്യാപിതാവിന്റെ ബുക്ക് ഷെൽഫിൽ നിന്ന് മലയാറ്റൂർ രാമകൃഷ്ണന്റെ 'യന്ത്രം' വായിക്കാനെടുക്കുന്നത്. മലയാറ്റൂർ ഒരു ഐ എ എസ് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായിരുന്നു; അദ്ദേഹത്തിനറിയാവുന്ന പോലെ ഒരു പക്ഷേ ബ്യൂറോക്രസിയുടെ ഉന്നത തലത്തിലെ ഉള്ളുകളികൾ മറ്റൊരു എഴുത്തുകാരനറിയാമായിരിക്കില്ല. അതിനാൽ തന്നെ, വളരെ ആകാംക്ഷയോടെയും താത്പര്യത്തോടെയും തന്നെയാണ് 'യന്ത്ര'ത്തിന്റെ പേജുകൾ മറിച്ചത്.
എന്നാൽ, ഒരു പോയിന്റ് കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ വളരെ വിരസമായ വായനയായി പ്രസ്തുത പുസ്തകം മാറി. ആരാണിതിലെ കേന്ദ്രകഥാപാത്രം?

The book sleeves deeper into the machinery of the IAS and the government and administration. The tale of this machinery is told through perspectives of different civil servant and political characters in this novel but however primarily focuses on Balachandran and James.
It started off as the story of Balachandran, a person coming from a lower strata of society cracking the IAS , of him staggering at times with the complex of his background and his confusions and complexes regarding his role in the administrative machinery. But eventually this plot diminishes and eventually focus more on James towards the end, of his personal and professional life and how it culminates into one towards the end. I felt that it became too stretched and the read became a bit monotonous towards the end. And for some reason, I really wanted Balachandran’s arc to have had a better story line and closure.

Vayalar award winning novel Yantram written by Malayattoor Ramakrishnan narrate bureaucratic life of the people. There are more than one important characters in this novel. Equally important characters such as Shekarappilla, James, Balachandran, Sujatha, Anita, etc appears throughout the lengths and breadth of the story.
The sum and substances of the novel is about bureaucratic corruption, governmental failures coupled with the decaying familial and societal life. At the one hand this heavy novel bring us to understanding of never ending feeling of sadness that never ceases from inner corners of family, and on the other, exposes the reality that career advancement stems from selfish interest of once can never be coexist with endless daily happiness familial life

ഒരു സാഹിത്യ സൃഷ്ടി അതത് കാലത്തിന്റെ പ്രതിഫലനമാണെന്നു വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നവനാണ് ഞാൻ. അങ്ങനെ ചിന്തിച്ചാൽ തലമുറകൾക്ക് മുൻപുള്ള കേരള സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഭരണതലത്തിലുള്ള മനുഷ്യപ്രാണികളുടെ നിലനിൽപ്പിനായുള്ള ഓട്ടപ്രദിക്ഷണങ്ങളുടെ നേർ ചിത്രമായി യന്ത്രത്തിനെ കണക്കാക്കാം. യന്ത്രം ഒരു സർവ്വീസ് നോവലാണ്, പറയുന്നത് ഭരണചക്രത്തെ ഉരുട്ടിയ അനേകം പൽചക്രങ്ങളുടെ ചരിത്രവും. ഒരു ടൈം ട്രാവൽ സാധിച്ചെടുക്കാനായി എന്നത് മറ്റൊരു ചാരിതാർത്ഥ്യവും. അൻപതോളം വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് മുൻപുള്ള ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ ഭരണസിരാകേന്ദ്രങ്ങളിലൂടെ ചുളുവിലൊരു സഞ്ചാരം, അക്കാലത്തെ സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ നേർചിത്രം, ആണിന്റെയും പെണ്ണിന്റെയും ചിന്തകൾ... കഥാസ്വാദനത്തിലുപരിയായി ഇതൊക്കെ കൂടുതലായി കിട്ടിയ മുത്തുകളായിരുന്നു.

My Second Novel after Yakshi that i dont have any complaints.
The book starts with Balachandran and ends with James....
Its not Balachandran but James the Hero of the Book i believe....
One cons though is, Some characters have same style of saying english, like well well...or behaving or mannerism Or offering drinks...
Or similar mannersism with women as well...Two chracters one Devan and other Antony end up raping girl...similar like story for both chatcters...
Ending was shocking....
Must be the daily experience with todays Govt officials as well 😔

ഭരണയന്ത്രത്തിന്റെ പൽചക്രങ്ങളിൽ ഒന്നു മാത്രമായി ആയി മാറിയ ബാലചന്ദ്രൻ ഐ.എ.എസ്. ഒരു ഡ്രൈവറിന്റെ മകനായി ജനിച്ച് ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിൽ നിന്ന് രാജ്യത്തെ ഉന്നത പരീക്ഷ വിജയിച്ചെങ്കിലും താൻ ഡ്രൈവറിന്റെ മകനാണെന്നുള്ള ചിന്ത ആദ്യാന്തം ബാലചന്ദ്രനെ വേട്ടയാടുന്നു. സുഹൃദ് ചർച്ചകളിലും കരിയർ ചിന്തകളിലും എന്തിനേറെ ദാമ്പത്യ ജീവിതത്തിൽ പോലും താൻ ഡ്രൈവറുടെ മകനാണെന്ന അപകർഷതാബോധം അവനെ പിന്തുടരുന്നു. അത്തരമൊരു ചിന്താധാരയുടെ നടുവിലേയ്ക്കാണ് തന്റെ കളക്ടറുടെ മക്കളായ അനിതയും സുജാതയും കടന്ന് വരുന്നത്. ബാലൻ്റെ ബാച്ച്മേറ്റ്സ് പ്രവചിച്ചത് പോലെ അവർ ഇരുവരും ബാലനായി മത്സരിക്കുന്നത് ബാലനെ ഒരു ഘട്ടത്തിൽ ധർമ്മസങ്കടത്തിലാക്കുന്നു. ഒരുവളിൽ ഒതുങ്ങാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുമ്പോഴും ഇരുവരെയും സ്വന്തമാക്കാൻ ബാലചന്ദ്രന്റെ മനസ്സും ശരീരവും വെമ്പൽ കൊള്ളുന്നു. അതിൽ അവൻ വിജയിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു... അതോ പരാജയപ്പെടുകയാണോ...
തുടക്കത്തിൽ പ്രസക്തനെങ്കിലും പിന്നീട് നോവലിൽ നിറഞ്ഞ് നിൽക്കുന്ന കഥാപാത്രം ജെയിംസാണ്. പലരാലും വേട്ടയാടപ്പെടാൻ വിധിക്കപ്പെട്ട യന്ത്രത്തിലെ മറ്റൊരു പൽചക്ക്രം. മകൻ ആൻ്റണിയാലും വകുപ്പ് മന്ത്രിയാലും എന്തിനധികം താൻ അടുപ്പം വച്ച് പുലർത്തിയ ബാലചന്ദ്രനാലും ജെയിംസ് വേട്ടയാടപ്പെടുന്നു. ജെയിംസിന്റെ കഥാപാത്രം പറയുന്ന "നിർബന്ധിക്കരുത് സാർ" എന്ന സംഭാഷണത്തോടെയാണ് നോവൽ അവസാനിക്കുന്നത്. ആരുടേയും നിർബന്ധത്തിന് വഴങ്ങാൻ അയാൾക്ക് ആകുമായിരുന്നില്ല. ഒരുപക്ഷെ അത് തന്നെയായിരിക്കാം അയാളുടെ വിധിയെ വഴി തിരിച്ച് വിട്ടിരുന്നിരുന്നതും...

Yanthram (Machines ) is a big novel by Malayatoor, he talks about the story of civil servants in Kerala cadre . This one is detailed fiction with a reflection on drama in the civil service circle .
The story starts on Balachandranans POV ends with James POV , This transition was not very promising in the novel ,still it's an interesting read and detail oriented writing of Mr Malayatoor gives the clear picture of naunces of Kerala adminstrative circle in 1970s

അനേകമടരുകളുള്ള, അങ്ങേയറ്റം സങ്കീർണ്ണമായ ഭരണ സംവിധാനത്തെ കുറിച്ചാണീ നോവലെന്ന് കരുതി വായിക്കാതിരിക്കുക! നോവൽ പ്രധാനമായും ഫോക്കസ് ചെയ്യുന്നത് ഏതാനും ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുടെ ജീവിതത്തേയാണ്. ഐഡിയൽ ഓഫീസറിൽ നിന്നും തുടങ്ങി സിസ്റ്റത്തിനു വഴങ്ങി സ്വയം നഷ്ട്ടപ്പെടുന്നവരെ കുറിച്ചും മത്സരയോട്ടത്തിൽ കോമാളികളാക്കപ്പെടുന്നവരെ കുറിച്ചുമെല്ലാമാണീ നോവൽ. പലപ്പോഴും main thread അതിനാടകീയമാകുകയും ഭരണമണ്ഡലം നാമമാത്രമായ ഒരു പശ്ചാത്തലമായി ചുരുങ്ങിപ്പോകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. ലളിതമായ ശൈലി നോവലിനെ ഒരു പേജ് ട്ടേണറാക്കുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ അർഹിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പരിസമാപ്തി നൽകാൻ കഴിയുന്നില്ലെന്നുള്ളത് നിരാശപ്പെടുത്തി.

Definitely the best book that I've read this year - and well-deserving of the 5-star rating. An unsettling but gripping novel, based on Civil Services in 1970s Kerala. The novel revolves around multiple protagonists who while working as cogs in the Civil Services machinery deal with their personal and professional issues.
