My childhood was spent with this book, it's my most prized possession by far. Though, initially i only could enjoy the pictures, later i realised that I could understand some part and son when I understood what this book was all about, my mind was blown.
Amazingly entertaining and surprisingly informative for a book that old, I learned to love chemistry because of the book. With lots of scientific facts, scattered anecdotes, and a simple yet concise and elegant language, I'm really surprised how good of an English book the Russian book was. I'll forever cherish the memory of the old termite eaten book that provided me a surprisingly long and entertaining read for most of my childhood.
Read a few chapters of this book back when I was a kid. Now found it online and read the whole thing. Great book if you are interested in chemistry or you just want to have fun learning about metals. I highly recommend it for kids and adults alike.
Take a little fiction, take a little science; add a pinch of imagination and voila! You get this book. Aimed at kids, this book describes various metals, their different properties, how they are extracted and so on - but in a fun way, like a series of stories, not like your average chemistry text book.
This book was worth every paisa my parents spent on it - it made me breeze through all my inorganic chemistry classes, and heck, this made inorganic chemistry FUN! If I was the only one in class who complained that our text books missed most of the fun stuff about metals, this book was the reason. I'm currently looking for my old copy. A definite must buy for parents with kids about to start studying chemistry! Heck, I'd read the whole book before we even started studying science (~8yrs), so the recommendation would be more appropriate for all parents with young children.
This is one of those books which i grew up reading :) The tales were enticing for the 'kiddo me' as much as the 'current me' loves reading it today. I definitely recommend this to anyone who would love to go on a fantasy filled scientific journey whose protagonists are metals :) In the end, you are bound to befriend the metals :)
