I've got ninety-nine problems and my brother's snarky, smart-mouthed best friend Sam is tangled up in every last one of them.
When it comes to firefighter Sam O'Shea, absence—and a regime of tactical avoidance—has been working for me juuust fine. But when the audition of a lifetime falls in my pathetically broke lap, and he's the only one who can help me land the job, I'm willing to make a deal with the devil if it means I can kickstart my career as a narrator for audio books.
The problem? We'd have to actually do the job. Together. And then we're told it's for an erotic romance. Narrating steamy lines in a tiny studio with a man who lights a fire under your skin? An occupational hazard. Accidentally inciting a town scandal when your erotic audiobook clips wind up on the radio? A crisis. And falling for the one man I promised my brother-and my heart—I wouldn't touch?
4.5 ⭐ rounded up for this witty and fun debut! I didn't know I needed a new book boyfriend until I met the hot firefighter, mayor candidate, erotica audiobook narrator Sam O'Shea.
Piper and Sam dated in high school, but broke up before he left for college. Flash forward 7 years and Piper is back in town to help her 44 year old pregnant mom with some of the 9! younger kids she already has. Piper is the only daughter, so her and her mom are best friends. One small thing that bothered me ~ When an opportunity comes up for Piper to have her dream job she wasn't expecting Sam to step in and offer to help her.
Sam is already super busy being a firefighter, while running for Mayor, when he decides to help Piper out by auditioning to narrate an audiobook with her. When he finds out the book is an erotica romance he's uncomfortable, but eases into the character with a voice that'll make you weak in the knees. I kind of wish I got to listen to the audio of this one.
I love, love, love that it's told in both of their perspectives. I do wish they communicated to each other better. I liked all the side characters, especially Nonna. Overall, this was a lovely rom-com, second chance, friends to lovers to enemies to lovers, best friends sister/brothers best friend, slow burn read.
I am excited to see what this author writes next!

Narration notes: I did not listen to this one, but am just giving the info above for reference.
A second chance romance, where the characters have to narrate the steamiest audiobook while pretending to hate one another, with both the brother's best friend and the one bed only trope? As soon as I saw that book, I KNEW I had to request it.
Sam O'Shea is a year older than Piper Bellini, he's her brother's best friend and they've known each other forever. They dated all through high school until a misunderstanding occurred, a misunderstanding that lead them to a pretty harsh breakup. Years later, Piper comes back to her hometown to help her mother with her pregnancy. She's now a voice actress who's really struggling to find a job and achieve her dream career. Coming back home is not without its difficulty though, namely, her hot firefighter ex running for mayor. Although Piper tries her best to avoid him, she quickly understands that it isn't in her best interest to do so. She was given the opportunity of a lifetime and really needs Sam to help her with a gig, the gig being the recording of an erotic audiobook. As Sam and Piper work on the narration of that book, they're faced with their unresolved baggage and their inability to resist each other.
This was such a fun book to read. It was a little bit cliché sure, but it was incredibly entertaining. I couldn't bring myself to put the book down (which is great, because I had covid and really needed a distraction). It's Livy Hart's debut novel yet it was truly fantastic. It was everything I expected it to be and more. This book perfectly illustrates all of the reasons why I love romance so much: it's angsty and funny, the characters are delightful and their chemistry was through the roof. The banter was so swoony, it made me giggle like a 5th grader. And the heroine's gigantic family was amazing. I love big chaotic families in books and Piper's family was ridiculously funny (and at times really touching).
I SIMPLY LOVED IT, it's a new comfort read that’s for sure and I strongly recommend it. (4.25/5)
Thank you to NetGalley, Entangled Publishing LLC and Livy Hart for providing an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Fuck it I had to DNF. When the book is about characters narrating erotic audiobooks but the actual narrators SUCK I actually can’t do it. This man is supposed to be a Popeye level buff FIREFIGHTER but he sounds so scrimpy and nerdy. The female narrator was better I guess but not my favorite and her guy voice is just as brutal. I also wasn’t a fan of how his POV was written. Especially with supreme lord of the nerds narrating. I guess I should’ve known bc when book summaries are written in first person…danger’s afoot. I have the eBook but truthfully nothing about this was compelling (besides the hot firefighter which still didn’t do it for me) so I doubt I’ll pick it up.
Piper is a voice actress who has returned to her small town to help her mother with baby number 11 where her ex boyfriend Sam is now her brother’s best friend.
Sam is a firefighter who wants to run for mayor and although he’s friends with Piper’s brother Caleb, he’s well aware that she and the rest of her family are still angry with him about their high school breakup. Neither one of them accepts responsibility for their misunderstanding.
I’m not sure why Sam wants to get back into Piper’s good graces given how hostile she is in the beginning and I also had trouble believing a novice could pass as a believable voice actor and that Piper never considered “m/f narration” might mean the genre was a romance. They don’t start recording until the book is half over and I didn’t feel like there was any chemistry built up between them.
I didn’t realize this was a second chance romance since “brother’s best friend who I hate” was hinted at in the description. Second chance isn’t my favorite trope and I might not have picked this book if I had known the couple broke up in high school seven years before.
There’s a lot of sharpness and wisecracking and it reads more like a romp. It’s fitting to Piper’s behavior and the chaos in both her and Sam’s lives. As a twenty-something she seemed to still be obsessed by a high school breakup and it made her seem immature. Both characters are too wrapped up in their families and their families expectations.
This is fast paced, but I never connected with the characters with all the chaos surrounding them.
"My best friend’s sister is not just off-limits, but off-limits to the second power because we’ve crossed the line once before."
This book guys.... I seriously loved every second of it! The storyline was something new and refreshing and with the second chance and brother's bestfriend tropes added, it became a whole lot more enjoyable. There was never a dull moment when the Bellini family was on page, I loved the interactions between every single family member because they were just so chaotically amazing! I was captivated by the dynamics between Sam & Piper from the first page they conversed. The slow and gradual change in their behaviour towards each other felt so natural. When all the pent up emotions and feelings from the past resurfaced, I definitely felt all the angst that I was expecting. Piper was unreasonable at times but Sam was equally responsible for all the things that went down between them. Some situations were oh so hilarious and some very very serious, it helped to maintain the balance and because of that, though the book was cliche at times, it didn't feel cheesey. But it was one big entertainer and I look forward to read more of the author's work now!
Thank you Netgalley & Entangled Publishing for providing me the ARC
While I wouldn’t call this a “bad” contemporary romance, for me this one missed the mark in a lot of ways. The overall premise was cute. The “forced proximity” trope combined with “former flame” could have been a very fun plot. However, those don’t really become the focus in any meaningful way all the while too many subplots try and play out. The chemistry between the characters didn’t feel very compelling, I honestly can’t imagine that these two would actually wind up back together. Anyone who holds a grudge over a high school romance for that long is a walking red flag (never mind that the entire dysfunctional and horrible family gets in on the action!). The banter hit my personal pet peeve of just being immature sniping, the idea that this family has 11 kids by relying on the unpaid labor of a singular older daughter gave me hives and frankly, no one in this town seems even a little likable. However, this seems to be a minority opinion based on other reviewsI will apply the disclaimer that my literary part peeves might not be yours.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Here's the thing about broken trust: it doesn't matter what happens the next month, or even seven years later. Every little breach from the moment of the first break feels bigger than the last. It's a virus that lays dormant, waiting to flare up again."
Piper has returned home to help with her mom's pregnancy and care for her younger siblings. She's hoping some time away will help her refocus on her career as an audiobook narrator. When the audiobook deal of the century lands in her lap, she decides to face the ex she hoped to avoid by working together. Soon the chemistry is not just in the story lines they narrate. Forcing them to face their past.
Talk Flirty To Me was a really fun read. I had no idea this was a debut and thought it was quite well written! I was pulled in from the start. There's a edge of anticipation, leaving you on the edge of your seat, guessing what happened in their past. Piper and Sam start this story with a banter that will keep you turning the pages, and then lead you to some serious chemistry. It slow burns into some great heat that I was here for! But also dives into some feelings and emotion too.
There were little things I didn't love, more personal hang-ups than anything. And while there is some good narrating scenes, I secretly hoped for more heated ones. All ME problems. Overall this story has all the feels, with some great humor, large family side characters, and even some angst and emotion. Would recommend checking out on release day if this sounds like your jam!
*I received an ARC from Entangled Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own and given freely.
I loved this SO MUCH. I've been hearing nothing but good things about this book for months, but - as a second chance romance hater - I just couldn't bring myself to dive in. Finally, I decided to give it a try... and I couldn't stop once I started reading. The crackling tension, playful banter, and electric chemistry had me absolutely hooked, and I was so completely invested in watching this couple find their way back together. Their resentment builds until it reaches its boiling point, and that had my eyes glued to every page. Yes, it's a second chance romance. But it's also a love story about two people who were always meant to be together, and they both messed up the first time around. As the story unraveled and we learned more details about the situation, I couldn't help but hurt for them both. Pair that with sizzling chemistry and tons of proximity in present day, and this was just such a compelling read. I devoured it at an alarming rate, and I'm definitely looking forward to more from this debut author.
The story follows Piper, a woman who runs into the last person she ever wanted to see again - her high school ex, Sam. For years, Sam was her brother's best friend, and for a short time he was also her everything. But insecurities lead Piper to push Sam away, and the events that followed destroyed them both. Coming face-to-face for the first time in years, Piper realizes that Sam is still the same ambitious, infuriatingly handsome guy, while she is back to living with her parents and struggling to get her voice acting career off the ground. So when the audition of a lifetime turns up, Piper is shocked when Sam offers to be her partner. Narrating a spicy audiobook with the ex she'd love to forget might be the last thing she wants, but it's exactly what Piper's career needs. It's only through spending time together in the present that Sam realizes how monumentally he messed up in the past... and how he'd give anything for a second chance.
I'm a reader who hates nine out of ten second chance romances, but once in awhile there's one that goes VERY right. This is that one for me. The history between Piper and Sam adds so much to the story, giving it great depth and a TON of tension - both sexual and otherwise. It's a surprisingly spicy book with a rich and swoonworthy love story at the heart of it. I loved that Piper and Sam were in nearly every scene together - the constant proximity forced them to confront their past and work through it, while building something entirely new in the present. I also loved that I could empathize with both characters about the break(up) in the past. It's kinda/sorta a Ross/Rachel situation, but it was also easy to see where they both messed up. And it was easy to love both characters in present day, while understanding how their relationship has fundamentally changed who they are today. It's the kind of story that deftly navigates tender moments as well as tense ones, with a vibe that's emotionally charged yet also (mostly) lighthearted. And when this couple finally gets things right? It's magic.

MISS LIVY HART SLAYED WITH THIS. However you win some and you lose some (and we definitely won much more than we lost) so I'll get into that now.
LETS TALK ABOUT WHAT I LOVE IN THIS BOOK. This is a two POV book (which is automatically superior to one POV). I did not realize how much I loved second chance romance until this book. THE TENSION??? IMMACULATE. The way they have history and really know each other?? A MASTERPIECE. The freakin BANTER AND DIRTY TALK AND SMUT?? LITERALLY HAS ME GRINNING AND GIGGLING.
"I swerve and over correct the car, completely distracted by the curve of her neck. She levels me with a look, equal parts sexy and smug hell. 'Eyes on the road, O'Shea.'"
SOME TSWIFT LEVEL SHIT.
"Hands off your mouth, Piper. I want to hear you."
PERFECTION🧎🧎🧎
"Tell me what you want, and its yours."
SO FUCKING UNDERRATED.
WHEN THEY'RE FILMING THE AUDIO BOOK?? UNBELIEVABLE.
SAM O'SHEA??? A PERFECT MAN. I LOVE HIM SO FUCKING MUCH. THERE'S NOT AN OUNCE OF TOXIC IN THIS MAN. THE WAY HE OWNS UP TO SHIT AND WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR PIPER??? AHHHHHWKJDB AND HES SO FUCKING HOT ITS INSANE (yes he's a fictional character I've never seen before BUT I KNOW). The way he's so in love with Piper makes me wanna cry BECAUSE WHY ISNT ANYONE IN LOVE WITH ME THAT WAY??? AND THE WAY HE NEVER BLAMES HER FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS?? THAT'S HOW YOU KNOW FOR SURE HES FICTIONAL.
“Replaceable?” His eyes widen. “The fact that you said that tells me you still don’t understand—to this day—how I felt about you. Or how much it hurt me when I thought you ended it. People do stupid shit when they’re hurt. I can’t take back what I did, and there are no words to say how sorry I am about Sidney. If I could turn back time…”
THIS MAN>>>>
Now lets talk about Piper... Do I get where she's coming from? Sure. IS SHE SOMETIMES COMPLETELY FUCKING RIDICULOUS?? YEAH.
"I can still hate Sam O'Shea and recognize, by all objective measures, he's an overachiever. And not as awful as I once thought."
THIS MAN LITERALLY DID NOTHING TO HER??? SHE broke up with him. Because SHE was scared of him going to college and leaving her. AFTER they broke up he went and kissed another girl. SO HE DID NOTHING WRONG SHE HAS NO RIGHT TO HATE HIM OR THINK HES AWFUL.
"You said, 'I cant do this Sam.' Those were your words. That's the definition of a breakup, Piper"
EXACTLYYYY
AND THE WAY HER PARENTS SUPPORT HER IN THIS EVEN THOUGH SHE'S WRONG??? If my parents supported me through my stupidity the way Piper's parents do I would definitely be much less mentally ill.
In the end though Piper's stupidity did not overshadow how amazing this book was.
This was a super fun and steamy second chance, dual POV, brother's best friend/firefighter romance between high school sweet hearts who had an epic break up that nearly ruined the two men's friendship.
The plot of this book was so fun! Sam needs Piper's mom's endorsement for his campaign to be the town's newest mayor and Piper needs a partner to land a big audiobook deal. Sparks fly as these two fight the chemistry that never died and they figure out if maybe there could be something between them again.
I was sooooo happy this book finally came out on audio so I could listen to the characters as they team up to narrate a steamy romance audiobook. The narration by Zura Johnson & Edward Black was excellent and worth the wait!
Steamy and full of small town charm, big family drama and a lot of laughs, this was a great debut book and I can't wait for her next one coming out in May!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
After spending 6 years in the city, Piper returns to her childhood small town and clashes with Sam, her ex-boyfriend turned local firefighter. Circumstances lead Piper to strike a deal with Sam: leave their past behind and work together as a team to record an audiobook. An explicit romance audiobook 🤭
Talk Flirty to Me is a debut and it was such a pleasant surprise! It's hard to know what you're getting yourself into when reading debut novels and I'm so glad that this one worked for me.
I like that Piper and Sam talk about their breakup before they officially start working together on the project. Both Sam and Piper take responsibility for their mistakes. That being said, Piper is the type of person who has a hard time lowering her walls and openly communicating her feelings with others. Some readers may get frustrated with Piper, but to be honest, I understand why it's so hard for her to lower her walls. I'm the same way myself 🤣
I really enjoyed this brother's best friend and second chance romance. Not only do Sam and Piper hash things out early in the story, but the chemistry between them is also electrifying. Sam and Piper share a lot of memorable moments taut with tension and chemistry. Their slow burn romance is well worth the wait 🔥
I also LOVE Piper's chaotic family. They are such a nice addition to the story. I especially love seeing Sam interact with Piper's family members. They are fun, chaotic, and well-rounded supporting characters. They provide Sam and Piper with much needed advice, while also shaking things up for Sam and Piper at the most unexpected times 🤣 There's a particular scene that made me scream with secondhand embarrassment #neverforget 💀
Overall, Talk Flirty to Me is a solid debut and there's so much to like about this story and its characters. I can't wait for this author to publish more books!
The premise of this book was very cute and I do like a second chance romance + a brother's best friend trope but there were a few things about this book that did not work as well for me. Piper Bellini is unemployed and mired down with college loans. She's a struggling voice artist and when she gets a chance to audition for an amazing opportunity, she's super excited...except that there's one catch. She needs a partner to audition with her. Enter Sam, her brother's best friend, her high school ex-boyfriend, firefighter, mayoral candidate.
Sam and Piper broke up in high school when Piper told Sam she needed a break (cue the Friends reference) and Sam, just days later, was caught in a very compromising position with a friend of Piper's. (I can hear Ross Gellar yelling "WE WERE ON A BREAK!") .
Aaaanyway, so these two basically broke up because they were bad at communicating which, they were high schoolers so I can cut them some slack. But cut to 7 years later and Piper is still holding a grudge against Sam, who due to all of these events, has basically been forced to avoid her entire family and his best friendship with Piper's brother ended because of Piper. I didn't really love this part of the storyline at all because quite frankly, I get that Piper was upset over Sam making out with one of her friends mere days after they broke up but she also dumps Sam with no rhyme or reason, doesn't explain ANYTHING about how she's feeling or why she's ending things. She just says it's over and that's it. Basically, these two were understandably immature high schoolers but in 7 years, I expected some wisdom and growth and maturity that comes with distance and age and it felt like Piper had very little emotional growth.
This is even more weird because Piper moves in with her parents to help take care of her many siblings (she's the only sister out of 11? kids) and her mom is pregnant again. Oof, that was a lot to handle. I am glad that the end of the book has Piper realizing she has a habit of hiding her true feelings and making decisions in Sam's best interests without actually ever consulting him about it. I don't love when 1 MC makes decisions in the best interest of the other MC without talking to them - it feels very high handed and patronizing.
I don't say this often but in this book, I actually ended up liking Sam, the MMC, more. Was he perfect? No. But he was willing to fight for the relationship and meet Piper halfway and it took a long time before Piper seemed to get on board with that and accept her share of what went wrong in their past. And I think her actions causing Sam to be completely ostracized by her whole family and basically end his best friendship with her brother was heartbreaking and I wish Piper had taken some more onus of all of that.
All in all, I love this particular trope but the execution missed a bit for me. However, I liked the author's voice a lot and would definitely read her again.
Content notes: Piper's mom is in her 40s and pregnant again, has medical pregnancy related complications towards the end but everything turns out ok.
This is a contemporary romance I loved in a season of my reading life where I find myself bored to death with contemporary romance. Livy Hart’s writing, characters, the FREAKING TENSION, takes some classic tropes and makes for an original book experience that I absolutely loved.
This is a classic, brother’s best friend, second chance, slow burn romance. Honestly, if you recommend a book to me with those three tropes, I’m headed for the hills. All three of those tropes are recipes for disaster. When a brother tropes goes wrong, it goes horribly wrong. Second chance?! Why’d y’all break up? Shouldn’t you stay broken up? And slow burn????? Plz don’t make me wait forever, you tease hole book!
BUT THIS BOOK IS NOT THAT BOOK!
Piper and Sam broke up in High School for some pretty solid reasons. And yeah, there’s a little miscommunication in there, but it’s not world shattering and when these two collide again 7(?) years later (I’ve already forgotten the exact years 🥴) they’ve matured and moved on and yay for them! I’m not trying to read a YA where kids in high school find love and stay together forever. I’m trying to read about the break up, the fall out, and the HOLY MOTHER OF BUILD UP TENSION to the adult romance steam scenes.
Here’s the thing I love about this book. There’s a lot of stuff going on. You got Sam running for mayor and trying to get Piper’s mom’s endorsement. You got Piper living at home with her huge ass family and dealing with caring for younger siblings. Throw in a job recording an audiobook, older brother Caleb, his wife, Godfather stuff, pregnant moms, Dad drama etc. etc., and you got a really jumbled mess of a book. BUT Livy Hart never loses sight of the primary goal of the book in telling how Piper and Sam fall in love. There’s so much driving this story, but we aren’t bogged down with the details!! Almost every scene features Sam and Piper together. Not scenes with Sam on a call as a firefighter or Piper spending time with her niece. No! This book isn’t about that crap. It’s about ROMANCE. This is the first contemporary in what feels like ages where these two characters are the primary driving factor in the story. It was so freaking refreshing and it made the mounting tension between the two of them so freaking exquisite and the pacing of the book quick and unputdownable. Yes, there’s alot going on, but it never feels like that. It just feels like a story about Piper and Sam falling in love and GAH DID I LOVE IT. Seriously, why do contemporary romance books these days have to teach us about the heroine’s career or insert some political issue that we should be aware of or whatever? I don’t care about any of that. That’s all unnecessary fluff. I’m here for characters reading steamy love scenes to each other for an audiobook and then eye banging each other the entire time and wondering how the hell they’re going to make it home without dying from sexual frustration!!!!
Beginning to end, I commend Livy Hart for her humor and voice she brings to these characters as well as the genuine development from the start of their relationship. Piper felt like a reaaaal character to me and I’m genuinely curious as to whether or not Livy Hart studies the enneagram. As a child in a large family, Piper could be a nine and her development and the struggles she has in telling how she feels line up with that PERFECTLY! As a wannabe enneagram coach, I was FEELING these characters!
The drama and conclusion of the book all felt natural. There was always gonna be a risk of the audiobook getting out and being negative for Sam and I think that the way they handled it and resolved all of it just made them stronger. So many times the ending drama is so ridiculous and forced I want to scream. But this book? Chef’s kiss.
Random things I enjoyed include the Zofran reference as I do love me some Zofran for the horrid pregnancy nausea!! I’m only alive (for real) because of Zofran and I need it more in my romance books. Two great loves of my life: My husband and Zofran. But also check with your dr cause it might have bad side effects 🤣
And the Armani cologne reference!! I swear I could smell the Acqua Di Gio cologne coming up from the pages when it was mentioned. Seriously, one of my favorite colognes from my youth. I felt like Livy Hart and I because best friends through her writing these two things into her book 🤣🤣🤣
This book was gifted to me by the publisher, raving review is my own.
“I can’t do life without you, Piper Bellini. I’m tired of trying to.”
You guys! I had a blast while reading this!
This story and the hilarious plot actually had me howling and laughing out loud multiple times, which is a plus in my book. I wish I listened to this as an audiobook, because that would have been very fitting! I loved both Sam and Piper, the chemistry between them was scorching! I adore Piper's big (literally Cheaper by the Dozen) family as well as her best friend Jane.
My one complaint is that there wasn't nearly enough of the voice acting going on in my humble opinion, and the fact that this was a second chance romance (which is completely fine by me tbh) but it wasn't mentioned in the blurb at all.
Livy Hart is a MASTER of her craft! I devoured this book in less than 24 hours because I simply couldn't get enough of the banter, angst, and heart. She's witty and sharp and her well-developed characters speak volumes of her talent. 10/10 READ THIS NOW!!
2nd Chance meets Romance Audio narration with a freaking firefighter? HOT DAAAAMMMNN.
The first half of 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝗙𝗟𝗜𝗥𝗧𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗠𝗘 was good, but really slow for me. I loved these main characters! Piper is funny and likable and caring! I loved her ambition. And Sam is SO FREAKING SWOONY. He is so busy serving others and trying to be a good man!
Besides the slow first half, I had a really hard time with the dynamic between Piper and her mother. Piper's mom has NINE children and Piper drops everything to move home and care for all the kids, something it is mentioned often that she also did the entire time she was growing up. I am in no way opposed to people having lots of kids. I am very much opposed to those people forcing their older kids to raise the younger ones. This aspect of the story really bothered me.
However, 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝗙𝗟𝗜𝗥𝗧𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗠𝗘 had all of the best parts of Second Chance Romance I love. Glimpses at the couple's past relationship, that old spark bursting into sexual chemistry, the feeling that these two were MEANT to be together. This book excelled at all of that.
𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝗙𝗟𝗜𝗥𝗧𝗬 𝗧𝗢 𝗠𝗘 also had lovable side characters, serious steam, and...drum roll....there was only one bed. Seriously so good!
𝗥𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚: ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗔𝗠 𝗟𝗘𝗩𝗘𝗟: Rated R / 1-4 descriptive sex scenes, may have harsh language. 𝗧𝗥𝗜𝗚𝗚𝗘𝗥𝗦: pregnancy complication (side character) 𝗙𝗘𝗘𝗟𝗦: 2/5 - A bit of drama, but still a pretty light read.
I received an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Piper and Sam were gold together! I loved that the story delved into the world of audiobook narration - what a fun situation! I always like when an author gets creative in the setting so this was totally new to me and so fun to learn about. I also loved that this is a brother's best friend trope and a second chance romance so we get to see what happened in the years since the couple broke up and how that break up affected the brother and the family.
Piper and Sam have been circling near each other but never quite overlapping for years (since the break up) so this story finally puts them in each others path and gives them some forced proximity goodness, some mega steamy dialogue, some real feelings, some professional ambitions that may contradict each other, and some small town goodness. The story was upbeat and fast, there were some heavy moments but the author helped make them easy to read and enjoyable. The steam was off the charts awesome. These two had chemistry, great banter, the story was smart, fun and something I recommend.
I hope this is a series because I'd love to see what happens with more of this fun family!
2.5 stars…. The characters made some truly inexplicable decisions that I couldn’t wrap my mind around. The ending didn’t make sense to me at all. I loved the premise but I wish the story had taken a different direction.
Based on the description and cover, I was all in on this book. However, once I started it I wasn't sure about the writing style or MC's way of speaking. When she said "rowdy" twice in the same page, I was ready to throw in the towel. I'm not usually a quitter on review books though, so I persevered, and I'm SO glad I did!
Second chance romances aren't usually my thing, so you can trust me when I say this book is GOOD. Livy Hart creates a funny, steamy, engaging story that I couldn't stop reading. Sam O"Shea is a veryyyy good book boyfriend for any romance lover to have.
In case you didn't know, the story centers around Piper--a down on her luck voice actress who has been forced to move home. As soon as she moves back, she runs into her ex--now a firefighter who is trying to mend fences. The crux of this book comes when Piper lands an audiobook audition of a lifetime. The only problem is--it's a pairs audition and Sam is the only guy she knows who can help her out.
Quite honestly, there are cringey parts to this book, but it does romcom well. I really liked Piper as an MC, and Sam is a great male lead because he isn't perfect but there is GROWTH. We love to see it. Piper's family is also a big part of this book and I liked them a lot. They added great color to the book.
I won't leave you hanging though! The spice is GREAT! The anticipation is everythinggggg. ;)
I received an electronic ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.
It was a solid story. Sweet, fun, with some very intense chemistry, but I failed to connect to the characters, which put a damper on everything for me.
Sam and Piper dated in high school, some drama ensued, and seven years later they're still harboring a little resentment and a lot of anger, Piper particularly. Second chance romance isn't my favorite trope, but I don't hate it either. I think what gave me pause in this particular instance was how it was never actually directly addressed how long Piper and Sam had dated in their teens. The amount of negative emotions they were still holding onto that many years later seemed slightly preposterous for a HS romance scenario.
I get that first loves are special, and first relationships can be intense, but Piper's dislike of Sam was so fierce, I would have thought he'd ruined her life or something. I just didn't think the level of animosity portrayed here was reasonable or justified, and that made it difficult for me to get invested in the rekindling of their relationship.
Also, while Piper's utterly chaotic family life provided some comic relief, was it really necessary for her to have that many brothers (10? 11?)? I feel like that detail was just thrown into the mix more for shock value than anything else, and ended up doing more harm than good since the whirlwind of names was impossible to keep track of and made every instance when her brothers were around confusing.
The only one of the brothers I could recognize was Caleb, Piper's only older brother and Sam's BFF. All the younger ones were a blur of faceless names. Having a dozen biological kids in the 21st century is exceedingly rare, and unless that fact is gonna be indispensable for the plot and properly explored, I don't think it's a worthwhile element to add.
Sam and Piper working together to narrate an audio book was an interesting and novel way of forcing the lead characters into spending time together in close quarters.
The writing was engaging and dynamic, if slightly exaggerated at times, and even if I couldn't connect to the main couple, at least there were heaps of sexual tension between them, which was ultimately the reason I bumped my rating up half a star. There's nothing some loaded comments and lusty looks can't make better!
All in all, it wasn't my favorite romance of all time, but it was still an ok read if you're looking for something short and lively within the second-chance-romance trope.
**I received a digital copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own**
An exhausting read, to be honest. The pace is so frenetic, with characters and plot lines and unrelenting disasters stacking on top of each other that there's no time for the reader to relax and take a breather and absorb the story. There's also not time to dig deep into the character's backstories to really understand their motivations or their history. The banter is cute, but it's also somewhat immature, especially on Piper's end, and it avoids actual communication which she and Sam (and frankly all of Piper's family) need. I didn't feel like their major issues were really addressed by the end of the story or that they'd be able to learn from their past mistakes. Livy Hart has a good voice, but less is more in terms of plot elements for this story.
Lastly, would Sam really be able to just become a voice actor with no training at all? Would Piper not know anyone in the audiobook community that she could partner with? Would she not anticipate the possibility of reading romance at all? This all stretched believability for me.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thanks to Entangled and NetGalley for the ARC.
I LOVE audiobooks. Like, I live on them. I can hardly do anything without a good audiobook in my ear. So, when I saw this book published that's about two narrators who go from enemies to lovers (another of my favorite things), I was super excited... except it wasn't published as an audiobook. Which, frankly, is so puzzling and sad.
But wait! After months of waiting, the audiobook came out AND it was at my public library.
And wah, wah... I liked the female narrator's version of the male voices BETTER THAN THE MALE NARRATOR! What!?
We get to 10% and hear this guy's voice described as a congested Mark Wahlberg, which to me means an even deeper voice than Mark's. But no. They had the gall to choose a male narrator who sounds like Steve Carrell (Michael Scott from The Office). I like Steve. He's a fun comedic actor. But I don't want a dude who sounds like that to narrate a guy who should have a voice like butter!
Plus, the storyline isn't intriguing enough for me to put up with this.
Calling death on this book. What a missed opportunity. This should have been duet narration and had a much lower/smoother male voice.
The first third was terrible, and the set-up is embarrassing. The FMC is still devastated because of her high school breakup (!) 7 years earlier (!!!) and has turned her whole family against her Ex (who is also her brother's best friend.) Additionally she is returning home to suburban Boston to help her mother who is pregnant with her 11TH CHILD (!!!!!!) and who is also a member of the city counsel. I just cannot with this. Also, and this is an issue with the audio, it is a central part of the storyline that the MMC has this amazing baritone, and as a result the FMC who is a voice actress asks him to audition with her for her big break. The narrator who is actually reading the MMC part has this sort of slightly nebbishy middle school guidance counselor's voice -- nothing wrong with it, I have known some very appealing guidance counselors and its a perfectly professional tenor, but it is no panty dropper. In fact, the woman who reads the FMC parts does a sexier man voice than the male narrator.
The last third of the book was sweet and sexy (other than the male narrator's voice) and the middle was just fine. I am going to say it is half a 2 and half a 4 so 3 stars it is.
