"Not a nice girl. A woman. The kind who's a little bit of everything. When you really get to know her. Damn, that does sound perfect."

I really struggled with this one. The idea of friends to lovers and set in the 80's was right up my street. I couldn't get into the story. I liked Sam, but not so keen on Eleanor. But this could be just more me. I felt the ending was quite rushed and I'm not sure the epilogue was needed. It was true to life as it does happen. But I felt it takes away from the HEA of Sam and Eleanor.
2.5*

*I received a copy of this book from Netgalley for an honest review.

**Edit**
I got send a free PDF of a new epilogue by Skye that will now be going into the book. I enjoyed the new epilogue that will be going into the book a lot more. It showed Eleanor going through a complicated birth but didn't go to dark or triggering that can affect some readers. But it felt like Eleanor and Sam got a more HEA.

UPDATE: The author has changed the epilogue and it is much more in line with the rest of the story.

3.5 stars

I love that this book was set in the 1980s and I was really looking forward to reading it. I liked Sam, the male main character. He is 23 years old and has just gotten out of a relationship with his long time on again/off again girlfriend. He's not too broken up over it, though.

Eleanor (AKA Len or Elle, which was weird for me) is in town for the summer to visit her friend. She has no plans to stay around as she is in a contest to win an internship in NYC and learn from some of the top pastry chefs.

Sam and Eleanor meet in a record shop and there is a bit of insta lust for them. Hey, it's the 80s. I did enjoy their romance and learning more about Eleanor's background. She comes off very tough, but she is very dedicated to those she loves, like her brother. I didn't really understand why they felt the need to keep their relationship a secret from their friends.

I enjoyed the story up until the epilogue where it took a much darker tone. It didn't fit the vibe of the story at all. It was supposed to be a happily ever after ending, and it was, but it was touch and go there for a while. Too dark.

Thank you to NetGalley and the author for my advanced readers copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

➳ arc rating: 4.5 ★

First of all, I want to thank the author, Small Town Girl Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. The Not So Nice Girl by Skye McDonald will be coming out on May 30th, 2023.

Skye McDonald is a contemporary romance author who wrote the Anti-Belle Series, her debut novels, in 2019. She also co-writes romance novels with author Sarah Smith publishing them as Sarah Skye.

What is the book about?
In the summer of 1986, Eleanor Field (FMC) is determined to have a drama-free summer in Nashville, focusing on avoiding dating. However, everything changes when she walks into a local record shop and encounters Sam Greene (MMC) behind the counter.

Sam, recently graduated and newly single, is enjoying his freedom and wants a carefree summer without any relationship complications. But when Eleanor enters the record shop, their connection sparks and things quickly become complicated.

What starts as a playful encounter in a listening booth soon becomes a challenging situation. Despite the undeniable chemistry between them, neither Eleanor nor Sam wants to risk starting something they can't finish. However, as their friendship deepens, they begin to question whether they are willing to take a leap into love.

Amidst the backdrop of 1980s nostalgia, this friends-to-lovers romance explores the complexities of friendship, love, and the pursuit of happiness.

Tropes and themes:
• Friends to lovers
• Insta-love
• Spicy

My review:
The Not So Nice Girl by Skye McDonald is a cute, funny and sweet romance novel with steamy parts and it will make you love all its characters.

I really enjoyed reading Elle’s character development from not wanting any boy drama to madly falling in love with Sam!

Things apart, I loved Brian’s character so much, he was hilarious all the time!

The last chapter gives the book a perfect ending, I think the epilogue wasn’t really needed —I didn’t see Elle wanting kids in a short period of time. It threw off a completely different vibe from the book.

But, overall, I liked this rom-com a lot and I really recommend it.

Edit: [Thanks to the author for sending me a free PDF with the new epilogue that will be making the cut for the final version of the book, I appreciate it.] The new ending was a lot better, it still describes Elle having a complicated birth but without making it triggering for some readers and it doesn’t send the novel to a darker theme.

My favourite quotes:
”All I can promise is that when I say I love you, I mean that you completely hold my heart in your hands.“

Who I recommend this book to?
• Everyone!

Good story with the friends to lovers trope set in the 80s. I forgot how hard it was to get certain things without the internet and having to ask for special orders for items not readily available. The chemistry between Elle and Sam is quick and you could feel their attraction. Any interaction with them made me fall in love with them as a couple more and more. The epilogue was strange and didn’t quite fir the story but other than that, this was an entertaining read.

I received an ARC for this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

I loved that this book was set during the 1980s in Nashville! It definitely had the 80s vibe going with all the descriptions of their clothing, hairstyles, and of course the music. The book starts with Eleanor arriving in Nashville after spending some time in the peace corps. She's staying with her best friend Monica and her roommate Jennifer. I loved their friendship! I would love to read more about Monica since we got to see Jennifers story unfold in this book. (Without any spoilers on that, Jennifer gets her HEA.) Sam and his twin brother are both friends with Monicas boyfriend. One drunken night (after being dump by his long term gf) Sam stumbles upon Eleanor sleeping on Monicas couch and he's instantly intrigued. He doesn't know who she is or where she came from and he never asks. Its not until they run into each other at a record store (absolutely loved Mac such an awesome side character! he reminded me of Leo from thats 70 show lol) that they come face to face and thats where it starts to get HOT IN HERE! That booth scene set the pace for how Sam and Eleanors relationship begins to unfold. Sam is a saint, literally I loved his inner monologues about how crazy she made him! I was rooting for him from the start because you can automatically tell that Eleanor is a flight risk, literally she refuses to call any place HOME. But sweet Sam doesn't give up on her! Can we talk about those "radio scenes" they were the absolute best! I found myself youtubing the songs so I can listen to them as I read the book, it definitely set the mood. Those scenes made me actually like Eleanor because she finally starting letting her guard down. We see them fall in love and try to navigate keeping their relationship a secret while also wondering what will happen once she leaves for an internship in NY. As per any good rom com we do get a curveball toward the end of the book that really tests Sams and Eleanors love. I do like that Sam waited for Eleanor to realize all on her own what she truly wanted and was to afraid to admit to herself.

Towards the end of the book we do find out why Eleanor is so defensive and flighty and she has a valid reason. I loved Eleanors dad and was repulsed by her mom to be honest. Absolutely loved Sams nana and she should be protected at all costs.

One thing that bugged me - why couldn't they just tell everyone about their relationship? it honestly didn't make sense to me. They have the best group of friends anyone could ask for but she didn't want to ruin the dynamic? OK

This book has the spice, the drama, the love, the friendship, the 80s vibe, and it such a face paced easy read that I would definitely recommend it if you love a good rom-com.

The epilogue seemed to be a hit or miss with some fellow readers from the reviews I've read but I loved it. Honestly life is so unexpected that something like that can definitely happen. I myself had an extremely similar experience with my last pregnancy and it hit close to home for me so I loved reading Eleanor coming out of it with a smile on her face and a happily ever after.

Eleanor “Len/Elle” Field and Sam Greene have a meet-steamy in a record store in 1986 Nashville. Len has just returned from two years with the Peace Corps and wants a drama and boy free summer. Sam just broke up with the girl he thought he’d marry, and at 23 is ready to be single for once. When Len and Sam realize they’re in the same friend group, they decide to set their chemistry aside and be friends too. Of course, that’s easier said than done.

The 80s vibes in this are just perfection and so much fun. All of the music references really took this 80s baby back in time. I loved all of the different band and movie references, though admittedly I’m partial to the The Breakfast Club reference because I am Team Judd/Bender all the way. The romance was very “can’t keep our hands off each other” right from the start, and it was pretty obvious that attempts to be just friends would fail. I was definitely rooting for Sam to get the girl of his dreams, and I thought the ending was a really sweet way of honoring who both Elle and Sam were when they met.

Sam and Eleanor are the best 80s couple around and let me tell you - you'll enjoy reading every scene of The Not So Nice Girl. I also really loved how true and authentic Eleanor's character was and the raw emotion brought into her character. Ugh, I wanted to hug her so many times.

Read this if you love:
Music references (bonus points because it's the 80s).
Friends to Lovers
Attempting to ignore their desires for one another
Insta loveeee
Open door romances with some steamy scenes

I've read a few by Skye McDonald and this one is definitely in the running for my favorite by her.

As a whole this was pretty cute and I thought the chemistry between our main characters was great. I loved the radio scenes. However, I felt the ending was super rushed and I also wished the epilogue was just completely left off as it threw me out of the HEA and was honestly a little unnecessarily triggering. Other than that - a very easy read.

This book was kindly sent to me as an arc and this review is completely honest

The not so nice girl is about Len and San. They meet in a vinyl store and instantly click ( ;) ) but Len is determined to have a boy free summer. Especially because she doesn't plan on staying long in her hometown

I really enjoyed that this book was sent in the 80s and that we got a lot of that environment. Also, the friend group was chef's kiss!
For me, it had a little bit more spice than I usually enjoy, hence the 3 star rating, but I know that if you enjoy books with spice you will love this book!

It's the summer of 1986 in Nashville, TN. Eleanor "Len" Field has just arrived in town after two years in Peru with the Peace Corps. She wants nothing more from the summer than to regroup, spend some time with her best friend Monica and brother Alex, and work on getting into a prestigious culinary internship program in NYC that will start in the Fall. Sam Greene isn't sure what's next for him, after graduating and breaking up with his long-time girlfriend. He'll start graduate school in the fall, and will otherwise enjoy a summer filled with great music, boating, and fun times with friends. But neither of them expected the other to disrupt their plans.

What I liked:
- great friend group and other supporting characters, in particular Monica and Jennifer, Alex, and Sam's Nana.
- the tension between Eleanor and her mom/family/life back home felt so real and authentic. When the underlying reason was revealed, it all made sense.
- lots of great music woven throughout
- The pacing. The story is supposed to be about a summer romance and that's absolutely what we got - it was spicy enough, intense enough, all within the confines of a summer romance that takes on new dimensions.
- Loved seeing the group's activities throughout the summer - boating, watching cartoons, dinner parties, etc. So fun and cute.
- Sam showed a great deal of maturity the weekend that Eleanor's dad got sick, He was really rock-solid and whether Eleanor liked it or not that's what she needed in the moment.

What I didn't:
- I couldn't really root that hard for either Eleanor or Sam. They're both upper middle class white kids in the 80s with plenty of choices and support. If the stakes had been higher for one or both of them that probably would have made them a bit more empathetic. My take was that, they're in their early 20s, if this doesn't work out that's part of each of their life's journeys.
- the hints of Jennifer's body dysmorphia/eating disorder were enough to be noticeable and a bit distracting but not enough to be resolved in the story.
- I wasn't totally clear on why they felt they needed to keep their relationship a secret from their friend group.
- The epilogue - it jumped way too far in the future, some parts didn't make sense, and the difficult birth scene was too much for the sweet story. Like ending a light meal with a milkshake - just didn't work. Did Sam just give up his career to be with her? It was unclear what happened to his educational and career plans.

Anyone out there love to read books that make you super nostalgic for another time? If that time you are looking to relive is the 80's then this is absolutely the book for you!

I found out about this book through the author as I am a big fan of another series she is a co-author on and once I read the synopsis of this story I knew I wanted to read this as soon as I could.

Synopsis:
Eleanor Field wants nothing more than to spend a drama-free summer in Nashville, listening to rock n' roll and baking pastries. But her plans are derailed when she walks into a local record shop and meets Sam Greene, a newly graduated, newly single guy who's looking for a stress-free summer of his own. Despite their instant attraction, neither of them is looking for anything serious. But as they continue to spend time together, their friendship lays the groundwork for something deeper.

What I Loved:
- Mac, he is the owner of the local record shop and he is the biggest Sam/Elle shipper, always looking out for the two of them as individuals and together
- Sam, the longer I read this book the higher on my book boyfriend list he got. He is a good friend, radio DJ, has an amazing car and wants to make sure everyone is happy and cared for...including his nana
- Friends Group, this group of people are my group of people who I would LOVE to be able to hang out with, they all want what is best for each other and want to spend time together whenever possible
- Family, this book is centered around family, both blood and chosen, and it is such an important aspect of Elle and Sam's relationship that if you lost a piece of that puzzle I think the story would have lost some of its heart and humor
- 80's nostalgia, I love books with throw back nostalgia like Ready Player One but I think this hit so much more cause they were actually in the 80s and all of the goodies Skye was able to include in the story never felt forced and just helped strengthen the book overall.

Anyone out there who loves a secret romance with fun little rendezvous, a found family, great musical references and a few moments you want to throw your book across the room then this is the book for you!

Skye McDonald has the talent for creating smart, sexy romances with characters that I wish were my friends. 'The Not So Nice Girl' is no exception.

When Sam walks into his local record shop, he never expects to walk out with a happy ending, after meeting Eleanor (Elle). Elle is flighty with a carapace on her heart, having escaped her starched Southern upper class upbringing to join the Peacecorps.

Set in the glorious 80s, this book tackles abortion (with zero guilt, judgement and slut shaming, which is so refreshing in romance), the narrow and rigid roles of womanhood, and finding your tribe.

This book is actually a prequel to McDonald's Anti-Belle series, featuring Sam and Elle's daughter Celeste (Not Suitable for Work), and Alex and Jennifer's son Nick (Off the Record). After I finished this book I re-read Celeste's story and there were so many callbacks beautifully done in Sam and Elle's story (Elle tells Celeste 'Someday soon ... I'll tell you everything')

I love reading female characters who aren't all sunshine. As we learn more about Elle's past you could see why she be standoffish with Sam, the ultimate cinnamon roll. Yet she's got so much heart, fiercely loyal to her friends and brother, and a determination to change herself. It's with her growing bond with Sam that you see her finally able to kick her final 'blocks' which stop her from being

By the end my heart was in my mouth with tears about to form. While I knew it would end perfectly fine (after all this is a romance AND a prequel) I was still put through the wringer. Its a bold choice for McDonald, but she pulls it off with aplomb, and the book is all the more better for it. Life, after all, is full of ups and downs.

Read this book, then go read the Anti-Belle series to see these characters as adults. If you like your romances full of well-rounded characters that feel like real people, explosive chemistry, and progressive in tackling issues, Skye McDonald should be added to your auto-buy list.

I read an ARC copy of this book from Netgalley.

I was really excited for this book because of the 80s theme and the cover! There's just something about the 80s that is so fun to read and put yourself in, and this story delivered plenty of 80s vibes! I loved the way it weaved in some of my favorite 80s songs and movies and even celebrity references. Outside of the references, though, you don't have to enjoy or have been in the 80s to feel the 80s vibes mixed with still relevant topics. Sam is a great MMC and one I was rooting for. Eleanor (Len or Elle) had a lot going on and I wanted her to have the love she didn't feel she deserved, but also I feel she, like many romance MCs, made things more complicated than they needed to be. But without some drama or complications, there wouldn't be a story lol My heart broke for her knowing she felt like she wasn't "good enough" and when we find out the "big event" that really set her off. I definitely was happy when these two realized they should be together. The only thing that made me waver between giving this story 4 stars or lowering to 3 was the current epilogue as it shifts to a totally different vibe and pulled me out of the "HEA/HFN". It was triggering and felt out of place, and jolted me from the ride I had just been on to "BAM" more serious drama. If I had known the epilogue was going to switch so fast, I think I would have skipped it (because as it sits, it tore away from my happy feelings that the end of the book gave). Still a solid story with plenty of spice.

Friends-to-lovers romance set in the 1980s
Len decides to stay with her childhood best friend in Nashville over the summer and has absolutely sworn off drama and boys. Sam is fresh out of a breakup with the woman he thought he was going to marry. The two meet in a record store and have a magical but brief hookup that ends up with both of them promising to simply be friends. It doesn't take them long to realise that the electric connection they share can't simply be disguised as friendship.
I really loved this book! I'm an early 00s baby, but Skye's writing and complete commitment to the 80s setting managed to give me nostalgia for a time I've never known. Skye did an amazing job of creating such realistic genuine characters who developed and worked on themselves throughout the story. The romance between Sam and Len was a beautiful blend of playfully light-hearted and intimately emotional, and it definitely felt like a partnership which I feel isn't always the case in romance.
In my opinion, this book is character-driven with strong character development and loveable characters, light spice, and it's relatively fast-paced.
The word 'sp*zz' in different forms was used a handful of times throughout the book in character dialogue which is definitely accurate to the time, but just something to note if that's something a potential reader is sensitive about.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in return for an honest review of the book. Thank you to NetGalley, the publishers, and the author.

what initially caught my attention about this book was the 80's setting. that and one of my favorite tropes: friends to lovers. I love reading romance books, I love being able to have a fluffy more light hearted read even though I rarely relate. I've never been in an actual relationship so I have no first hand understanding of those ins and outs and I'm queer, which has nothing to do with reading books with non-queer characters just queer love can look different than straight love. oh but this book! most of my life I was the "nice girl" the way len's mom wanted her to be. (minus the relationship part. I just never did that 😂) people thought I listened to classic music and that I was an easy target to just get me to do something for them and then leave without a thank you even. they just wanted to use me for something because they knew I would do it and then move on pretending they had never acted as a fake friend towards me. as I became more and more aware of it, I hated it. but I couldn't bother fighting it. I struggled like how eleanor does with how society thinks women should be so they are "palatable". it was just this extreme connection to this book and seeing her thoughts that were just like my own! that i just couldn't put this book down. I'm so glad the 80's setting hooked me in because this book ended up being so much more. I've done a lot of healing already (shout out therapy) but it's still always nice to see something that lets you know you're not alone.

This book was an awesome romance set in the 80s that both starts and ends with a bang! The book follows Len and Sam as they battle a love they are scared may cause a rift in their friend group. It is full of music references, steamy scenes, and characters you just can’t help but want to befriend.

The author flawlessly weaves back and forth between light-hearted and devastating situations that deepen both the plot and your connection to the protagonists. There are topics in the book that people may think taboo, but Skye addressed them with finesse. It is obvious that the author is devoted to protecting her characters’ well-being and adds only what is necessary in the story for us readers to understand the characters’ growth.

You all know I love a book that tears at my soul! Remember how I mention light-hearted and jarring situations? I was lucky enough to receive and ARC copy of this book, and I was blown away by the epilogue! I was on the edge of my seat, wiping drops of sweat from my forehead while waiting to read the end. The epilogue truly made me appreciate the outcome and the characters so much more!

I absolutely recommend this book! Specially, if you have enjoyed How to Kill a Rockstar by Tiffanie DeBartolo, The Bodyguard by Katherine Center, and Finding Home by Sutton Bishop.

I was initially drawn to this book because of its 80s theme and eye-catching cover. The author did an excellent job of creating an authentic atmosphere that effectively evokes the nostalgia of that era. I particularly enjoyed the incorporation of songs that added to the overall ambiance.

The main characters, Sam and Eleanor (Len or Elle), were well-developed and interesting. Sam was a particularly strong male lead who was easy to root for, while Eleanor's inner turmoil and self-doubt made her relatable. I was invested in the romance from the start and rooting for these two characters to get together. The author successfully built up the tension and angst, which made their eventual reunion all the more satisfying.

However, the epilogue felt out of place and was tonally inconsistent with the rest of the book. It dealt with serious and triggering issues that detracted from the joyful and romantic feelings that the end of the book had built up. If I had known that the epilogue would take such a sudden turn, I found myself skipping through it a bit as it was a difficult read

Overall, this is a solid story with plenty of nostalgia and romance. However, the jarring shift in tone in the epilogue left me feeling conflicted about the book as a whole.

Thank you netgallery for this arc

i saw that this was friends to lovers and automatically hit request. i saw that it was set in the 80s and got even more excited.

i read this book in maybe 2 hours (?) and didn’t hate it, but it didn’t really stick out to me.

what i loved:
-the sibling relationships
-sam
-THE SETTING
-the fact that elle is a baker

what i didn’t love:
-the way we kinda just… jumped into the romance right at the beginning
-eleanor… to elaborate, she just annoyed me for whatever reason
-there wasn’t enough going on in the story imo, so it felt drawn out
-(SPOILER): the pregnancy trope at the end… i hate the pregnancy trope and will never shut up abt it lmao
-(SPOILERS) this book felt a wattpad story at times (due to the pregnancy trope, completely random proposal, and some of the dialogue)

tropes:

I have mixed feelings about The Not So Nice Girl.

I really liked Sam and Eleanor and thought their chemistry was good! Loved the spicy scenes :) I liked the idea of it taking place in the 80s and I liked the friend group. I can totally relate to Eleanor looking for a forever home!

However, it seemed like some drama was thrown in just to be thrown in and I feel we could've gotten to the root of what happened in Eleanor's past in a different way. I almost would've rather the book just be strictly about them hooking up all summer in secret because that was fun! I didn't like that they were hiding their relationship - literally their friends wouldn't have cared but at the same time I get why Eleanor felt they needed to.

I'm not a fan of epilogues so I didn't think this one was necessary and it really threw me off when it came off as more dramatic then it needed to be.

I was born in 1988 so I don't know too much about the 80s but felt like the author could've found more references to add in because except for the music, this book could've taken place in any decade.

Thank you to Small Town Girl Publishing and Netgalley for making this available to read and give feedback on!

Less than 5-word critique: fun, romantic, compelling, adorable, and surprising

I'm so glad I found this cute story. And it is such a bonus that it's set in the 80s.

The novel takes place in the summer of 1986 and follows Sam and Eleanor, two people in their 20's who are immediately attracted to each other when they meet in a record store but decide to be friends. As the story progresses, their relationship is explored as they deal with their own fears and insecurities, mutual circle of friends, their love for music, their pasts, and what they want out of life...as well as giving love a chance.

McDonald's writing is done beautifully and filled with good rom-com essence.

The characters are well-developed and fun.

In the summer of 1986, Eleanor Field plans for a drama-free Nashville vacation focused on friendship, not romance. Sam Greene, newly single and carefree, shares the same goal. However, fate brings them together at a local record shop. What starts as a playful encounter in a listening booth soon becomes complicated. Despite their undeniable chemistry, both are hesitant to start something serious. As their friendship deepens, they must confront their fears and rules about love. Will they break free from their self-imposed limitations and find a way to turn their friendship into something more?

What I enjoyed:
- The drops of 80’s music. I have never been one to listen to 80’s music, much less rock. It was fantastic to see new music.
- The friend group. You get to see them as a whole and in their individual friendships. It reminded me a lot of sitcoms, which I love!
- Sam and Elle. Swoon. They are so sweet together. They remind me of me and my boyfriend.
- Quick storyline. ‘The Not So Nice Girl’ is an easy read to get through quickly, which I always enjoy in romances. I’m not a slow-burn girly.
What I did not enjoy:
-

I recommend this book if:
- You enjoy friends to lovers
- You like a little spice
- You like strong women
- You like to follow friend groups

Overall, this was a cute read. I loved all the 80s references (it does take place in 1986). I enjoyed the initial confusion over the MMC, and that the friends seemed to support each other. I didn’t connect with the MCs, though. That is probably more me and I suspect other won’t have the same difficulties.

I felt for Len when she referenced not having a place to call home. I adored that she had a goal of being a pastry chef. Most of all, I liked Sam. He was a great love interest and enjoyed his POV’s. He was kind, supportive, and put up with a lot.

I wasn’t a huge fan of part of the epilogue (TW: difficult birth) but maybe there is a planned sequel that will go further into those struggles.

Thanks to NetGalley, Small Town Girl Publishing, and Independent Book Publishers Association for an arc of this book.

this was a fun, dramatic, quick read! I felt like this book was a spicy romcom roller coaster right till the very end. Sam was a sweetheart and someone I was rooting for right from the start, and Eleanor was a sassy and fun character who kinda stood in her own way sometimes (don’t we all, really)— but she learns to accept the love and happiness she doesn’t think she deserves with Sam they both want.
I had mixed feeling with the epilogue— usually I prefer straight fluffy, no drama epilogues to finish my HEA romcoms, but the realistic way this story finishes—even happily ever afters have deep, serious moments that are full of happiness, sadness and many emotions in between— shows that regardless of the hardships of life, the loves we choose will still be there for us
Thank you for the ARC!!!

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book for an honest review!

Pros: Loved Sam and Elle's relationship. They were sweet AND steamy together. Sam's Nana is an absolute delight. Liked the book overall, and it was a quick read.
Spoilers below!

Cons: I was honestly a little distracted by all of the Friends and 90210 character names. The third act conflict was, well, unnecessary. As a character, Elle could use that time to find herself. I don't think the reason for that time should have been a misunderstanding about Sam's awful ex.

Someone mentioned that there are 2 different epilogues out there, and now I'm confused about which version I got. It was sweet that they were married and having a baby. It was less sweet that it resulted in a loss of future fertility for Elle that isn't really acknowledged other than by the doctor saying some women take it hard.

"Set in the summer of 1986, The Not So Nice Girl is a heartwarming romance about two people who find love when they least expect it. Eleanor and Sam share a mutual love of music, a deep connection, and a group of friends who bring them even closer. But can they overcome their baggage and fears to take their relationship to the next level? Can Eleanor, a free spirit who's always on the move, admit that she's found a home in Sam? And can Sam, a sweet guy who's too nice for his own good, be bold enough to say what he really wants?"

This book took a really long time to get anywhere. I wasn't sure the story would make it to a finishing place.

I would recommend this book to someone who likes romances set in the 1980s.

When Eleanor Field meets Sam Greene, any plans that she has to have a drama-free summer disappears. Despite their instant attraction, Sam has just graduated and is newly single and doesn’t want anything serious, and neither does Eleanor. Yet, as they spend time together, their connection deepens to more than just a shared love of music.
Set in 1986, this book did transport me back to a time of some great music and refreshed my memories of mixtapes! There was plenty of chemistry between the characters, whose attraction was fairly instantaneous. It was a bit rushed at the end with an epilogue that didn’t quite gel with the story and its mood. Otherwise, a good read.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Thank you to NetGalley and Small Town Girl Publishing for the ARC of this novel, While I would consider this historical fiction since it is meant to be set in 1986, I am not a fan of the "nice girl" persona that is being forced upon Len. Yes, the title is meant to combat that but I just could not connect with her as a character. Her backstory makes me feel for her but the writing did not hold up to make her compelling. Sam was fine but mostly a doormat who becomes less of a doormat at the end. The epilogue was not necessary to me for them to have a child and while they may be slightly older than a teen, they still act like teens so they are going to need a lot of help to be successful parents. This turned out to be not my cup of tea. 2 stars.

Half way in and the characters still haven't grabbed my attention. They like each other but don't want to get together. For reasons. Something to do with something that happened in her past. Flashes of sentence fragments suggests a toxic relationship.

Not enough of a carrot to make me want to continue.

I stopped reading when Sam and Len were making a comparison between Bowie and Morrissey. I realized I was never going to like these people.

Why is this story set in 1986 anyway? To name drop films and song titles, but that only works if the audience knows those films and songs. I'm taking a wild stab in the dark here, but I think half the target audience doesn't know the songs.

Rating rounded up because I liked the cover.

I received an ARC through NetGalley.
