It took me a long time to figure out what to write for my summary. Im still not entirely sure.
You never think that anyone else can go thru the same thing you did. This story hits pretty close to home. I felt like I was a part of the story. I could feel what she felt and the emotions she was going thru. You blame yourself, push others away because thats how you feel you can survive. People around you have some idea whats going on but then still dont speak up. You feel helpless. Is someone going to save me or is this the end? I was moved by this book so much. When my mother knew what was going on and did nothing, I vowed from that day forth to NEVER let my children go thru that. So thank you Lindy for writing this book. It meant more to me than you may ever know.

I really liked this book, it really pulls you in. Safe and Sound is a very well written book that will make you think. I've already read Charmed and I enjoyed it, as well. This book brings abuse to life and sometimes it's hard to seek help. Fear can do strange things to people. Kept me reading most nights late. I went away from it for a while and when I came back I had that same excitement I did when I first started. I would like to see a follow up. It was a fast read as well.

This is my very first review for Platinum Book Reviews and I am honored to do this and it is also the first time I've read any works by Lindy Zart.. I can tell you that she has gained a fan for life!!! I love the way she can draw you into the story. As she describes each character, I can easily envision them as I walk through the pages of their lives. I cant wait to read more!!!

I received a copy of this book and for some reason, I'm not entirely sure why, I put off reading it for a while. After having it sitting on my bookshelf for a couple weeks, silently taunting and begging me to read it, I finally gave in and started it late last night.
I am now figuratively kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I could not put this book down!!!! In fact, I stayed up past 3 a.m. reading it. From page one all I could think was "Wow!". This is an INTENSE read. It will definitely make you feel something. Throughout the book I laughed, I shed a tear or two and I seriously wanted to punch someone...or maybe a few someones in the face.
I loved Lola and Jack and the way they could just let go of their problems with each other. The way they interacted with each other and with others felt very real. I could almost imagine myself and people I know being in these same situations, having the same conversations. And the secondary characters....well, let me just say I think I'm a little in love with Sebastian.
The only real issue I had with the book is that I felt the pace of it was too quick. I would have enjoyed more details, more scenes that showed certain relationships developing. But aside from that, I really enjoyed this book. and I'm hoping that Lindy Zart decides to tell more of the characters' story. I would definitely read a sequel.

This Book pulled more emotion out of me than any other book EVER has. I cried almost all the way through the book. (That NEVER happens) I’m usually able to hold the tears at bay or take a break and come back to it and be fine. But NO not with Safe and Sound, no matter what I did I was still turned into an emotional wreck.(You know the crying that has your eyes bloodshot and swollen, snotty nosed and you end up with a headache after?? Yeah that was me) I’m not sure whether I should be mad at Lindy Zart for pulling such emotions out of me or be proud of her for being such an amazing writer and buy up every book she has in paperback so I’m going with both feelings.
I was pulled into the book automatically and felt like I was going through everything Lola was. I hated the people she hated, and loved the people she loved. I felt every slap, pinch, and all the emotion abuse she felt. I love Poor ol’ Jack and all his baggage. His little sister is so protective and a lil spitfire. Sebastian has a hero complex but I can’t help but love him also. I CANNOT wait to read more of Lindy’s work!

My Review:
Safe and Sound by Lindy Zart was one of the best books I have read in a while. In Safe and Sound we meet highschool student Lola who spends her school days trying to blend in with the walls. She used to have some really good friends at school, including Sebastian, but now it seems that his new girlfriend Roxanne's goal is to make her life hell. She feels totally alone in her life, but it hasn't always been this way. It seems that since her new stepfather has come into her life a year ago, all her friends have abandoned her, even her own mother seems to have forgotten about Lola. As much as Lola tries to be invisible at school she wishes she could be the same at home. This is not possible though, and Lola is forced to deal with the abuse and neglect all alone.

This was a story so well told that I felt the need to intervene on her bahalf and felt helpless that I could not give the main character a guiding hand, a boost, encouraging words, or even call the cops for her.
I normally read science fiction but had picked up the book based on the author. When it came up in my queue to read I was a quarter of the way through it before I realized there would be no intervening fantasy world, magic, or alternate reality to carry her away. Her problems were going to be handled by her. By then I was too wrapped in the story and had to see it to the end.
Thank you Lindy for the excellent read, I very much enjoyed it.

The only words that I thought of when I finished this book were WOW, powerful, sad and heartwarming!! When I first started reading the book, I was in tears that I couldn't jump in the book and save Lola and Jack. I felt like I was directly in the book and following their every move. I wanted to cry, scream and hold Lola with everything she had to go thru. I'm glad she had Jack there with her to understand what she was feeling and to comfort her in her time of need. I'm so glad I read this book and went thru every emotion in the book, as well as a half box of kleenexes. This is a must read if you are looking for a book that is powerful with a great "every happens for a reason" meaning.

It's been a year after Bob moved in with Lola and her Mother. Lola has lost weight and looks like a ghost, she keeps her head down and trudges though her daily life in fear. Her friends have abandoned her, but after meeting the dark and cynical Jack she has an escape, but things are about to get worse...
Even though this is another YA abuse story that isn't very long, the book resonates. The secondary characters are easy to picture, are well defined and are worthy. I loved Jack, he was complex and interesting.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a roller coaster of emotions as you feel the fear and anger that Lola goes through. Lindy develops this character so well that through it all, you keep rooting for her. Lindy makes you feel like you are there as Lola tiptoes around her house, and you can almost smell the booze on her step father. I really enjoy how Lindy wraps the story up at the end leaving us all hopeful that there really is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Having already read one of Lindy Zart's books, I had high expectations for this one. Plus, I had heard only good things about. I started it around lunch time, finished it around dinner. It was THAT good.
My one issue with it was with the lack of pronouns that could have replaced names. ...which isn't a big issue at all.
I loved the story. Loved the characters. Only cried THREE times! *puffs out chest*
This was an awesome book. I recommend you read it immediately.

I loved it! It's definitely a book that if you can't relate directly you know someone that you can be there for! I cried...a lot. Some sad tears, some happy tears. Definitely a book that once you pick it up you won't want to put it down. :) If you haven't read it yet, you really need to get your hands on it NOW! If you have read, well, read it again!

Not really my thing to be honest.
I don't mind a good YA novel, but being John Green's fan I have a really high expectations.
The author put too much drama in the plot, at moments it felt over the top.
I was feeling sufocated by pity I felt for the main character, for her mother and even Jack.
I've read few books by Lindy Zart and I love her writing but unfortunately not in this one.

at any given moment i was cheering, holding my breath, getting angry and on the verge of tears right with the characters. well written and had me captivated. the supporting characters were just as well written as the main ones. can't wait to read more from lindy!

Probably more of a 4.25. It was a good book but it had the potential to be an exceptional book if there had been a little more character buildup. At times it felt a little rushed. Overall, though, it was a worthwhile read.

There was a time years ago when I dropped everything to read a Lindy Zart book. This book sat on my TBR list for years before I was able to read it. Something changed along the way. When Lindy Zart stopped writing books I moved on and this book was ignored. Now I’m struggling to finish it. It saddens me that an author who once held passion for writing is no longer my number one priority. This book is a prime example of how writing habits and styles change. My reading habits no longer align with her writing style.

Lindy Zart once again proved her writing skills with this one. She has such a range in her repetoir and this one will be very high up there for me. It was a tear jerker and one dealing with intense psychology that's for sure. The beginning has you wondering just what you are reading and where she is going with this book. Overall, excellent read, well developed characters, and a wide range of emotions. Definitely a book to settle in with.

Angst
This was quite an angst ridden ya book and I loved it. Lola is a junior in high school and suffers emotional and physical abuse at home. The isolation from her friends that she has self imposed on herself is heart wrenching and left me emotionally drained.

Great book!
I really liked this book. Lola is such a well written character. You definitely feel like you know her and feel so much for her. I loved her relationship with Jack and the storyline.

Her mother marries Bob Holden and now every day is an escalating hell to be endured. She no longer has her best friends. Bob controls every aspect of her life. She believes nobody outside of her house knows what is going on. Then she meets Jack Forrester. Jack just knows. He knows and he understands, but his own home is another version of hell. When the hell of Lola's home becomes too much, Jack can't save her. Is there any intervention available?
This is a frightening story that could be pulled from the files of any social worker in any state. Jack and Lola are each embroiled in their own miseries at home, when they meet, and meet again. Together they find strength in the other to face the demons of their hearths. This is a sweet, first-love story with a very dark streak of reality.
I loved this story. The characters, primary and secondary, are all very well-developed. The plot moves at a comfortable speed. The only thing I didn't like was it felt like it should have been written in first-person and instead was in third person. Because of this, it felt like nearly every other sentence was "Lola did…" "Lola thought…" Her name was used over 1,000 times! Luckily, I do love the names Jack and Lola, so it wasn't as horrible as it could have been with another name; I am a Parrotthead and kept humming Jimmy Buffett's "Frank and Lola" while I was reading for most of the book.
This is the second book I have read from Ms. Zart and I continue to love her imagination. I am one of the many following her on Facebook (you know that is the acceptable kind of "stalking") and hoping for an early release of COMPLETE (Incomplete #2).

Lola is a changed girl, gone is the normal teenager with friends, now she is a loner, a shell of who she used to be. Her best friends don't know what to think, she just retreated from everyone. What they don't know is that her life at home is unbearable, her stepfather is abusing her. She stopped seeing her friends to protect them and her mother ignores everything and lives in her own little world. She contemplates the unthinkable, until she meets Jack. Jack, who she thought was an outcast, a troublemaker, someone she wouldn't want to know. Turns out Jack knows more than she thinks and they have a lot in common. Her old best friends are also trying to get back into her life and she is scared to death they will learn her secret. As Jack's presence slowly brings her back to life, things at home come to a head. A horrific incident will change her life forever. Her future may not be what she thought it was going to be, but will it be better or worse. I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book at first, I was so angry at Lola's stepfather that I wanted to kill him. Then my anger switched to friends, teachers, and finally to the person who deserved it, her mother. As a mother, I was appalled at the lack of concern or caring from her, I just can't comprehend that type of neglect. I did, however, love Jack, and Lola's besties. These kids who were wise beyond their years and helped her as much as Lola would allow, through a terrible situation. Kids could take a lesson from this book on positive thinking, never giving up, helping friends and not keeping secrets. It's a tale of abuse and the effect it has on a person, not just physically, but mentally, which I think is much worse and has longer lasting affects. All in all, I did like this book, which completely surprised me. Due to the content, I would not recommend this book to kids under the age of 17.

This book isn't just a book. It's hope. In our world today there are so many horrible things happening every moment that it gets overwhelming. But when it happens to someone you know or to you yourself it is unbearable. This book isn't about me or someone I physically know but from the moment I started on page one I became a bystander in Lola's life. I was someone who cared for her looking into the tragic world she was forced to endure. With everything that is happening you sit there crying waiting for something, someone to see what is really going on and stop judging her. Jack does. Jack was a breath of fresh air, in a slow building storm sort of way. With everything Lola has already been through you couldn't think it gets worse but if it didn't there would be no saving her. They always say it has to get worse before it gets better. Though we are forced to endure the hardships and betrayal along with her we start to see the light at the end of the tunnel, the hope. The salvation. This author has always had a way of storytelling that leaves you breathless and emotional. She gives you heartbreak and beauty in imperfections. With her wielding the pen you are forced to feel. Not just 'oh poor little sad girl', but this is your friend, sister, daughter, loved one and she is dying inside so you are as well. But at the end of it all she gives you something that makes you remember there is beauty is all the simple moments of our lives. Healing doesn't happen instantly, it takes time and people who truly care. With the healing you find yourself hopeful that this world has enough redeeming qualities to give us something truly wonderful.

Safe and Sound is the story of Lola, a teenager trapped in an abusive home with no one to turn to. Her mother, the one person who should be there to protect her, turns a blind eye to the abuse her daughter suffers at the hands of her husband. Feeling like she has no one left in the world, she meets Jack, someone who not only listens, but completely understands what she is going through. This story will reach in your chest, rip out your heart, and stomp it to bits before shoving it back in your chest, so be warned. The characters are well developed and easy to build a connection with, even if at times you want to grab them by the throat and shake some sense into them. Safe and Sound is definitely one of those stories that will make you angry, upset, tearful, or just plain want to throw the book across the room. Mostly it is because the author manages to make you care about the characters so darn much that you can't stand to see them go through what happens and sometimes it is because hearing the name Lola one more time just makes you want to scream. The use of pronouns is limited and for me, was a distraction to the story. In another story, the constant use of the character's names, rather than 'he' or 'she' would have drove me mad. Safe and Sound was redeemed by the solid story and likeable characters that draw you in deep.

Her mother, the one person who should be there to protect her, turns a blind eye to the abuse her daughter suffers at the hands of her husband. Feeling like she has no one left in the world, she meets Jack, someone who not only listens, but completely understands what she is going through. I won this book in one of Lindy's many giveaways. About two years ago.
Anyway, Safe and Sound is the story of Lola, a girl who's had more than her fair share of burdens in her short life than other people see in a lifetime. She finds understanding in Jack, a guy from school who lives the same life of misery.
It is through this bond that they've formed that they find themselves falling in love with each other, caring what goes on in each other's home life.
I love stories like this one because they show that not everyone's life is peaches and cream. And the fact is, there are people who lead lives like Lola's, full of fear and without hope of that fear ever coming to an end.
This was the first book I ever read from Lindy Zart. It's the book that got me hooked (that rhymed) and its because Lindy is not afraid to write about the sad or darker parts of life. Lola's story is one I would have missed subconsciously if Lindy had never written it.
I've felt like the characters who care about Lola have felt. Impotent, frustrated because you're unable to help out a person who so desperately needs help, but whom you can't help if they never seek it or admit they can't take it anymore.
The ending fit the story. In real life, you don't always get the answers to why something happens to those who least deserve it. Lola's left with many questions, but she deals with it.
Safe and Sound gets 5 out of 5 Platypires from me.

THIS BOOK WAS GIVEN TO ME IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW
I am truly at a loss for words, this book just hit home for me. I know the subject matter is a little hard to stomach; child abuse is a touchy topic for most, but the author writes in such a way that makes it hard to put the book down. Even as I was crying I kept telling myself that I had to finish this book, and I cried a lot.
Lola was just your typical American girl until a horrible chain of events threw her into a living nightmare. With her mother seemingly unable to help her due to her own issues, Lola contemplates what any person in her situation would see as a way out. Until she meets Jack, who pulls her back and helps her see that she can make it through with a little help from a friend. It was heartbreaking to read this book. I wanted to throw the book most of the time I was so pissed that the mom sat back and did nothing to help her own daughter.
The book as a whole is very well written and the characters are well defined. Even though the subject is hard to take I did love this book.

The Good:
*Lola. I thought the author did a good job of portraying the psyche of an abused girl. I felt for her character and I liked how she slowly came back to herself.
*Bob and Lana. No, I did not like the characters, but I felt they were realistically written. Not over-the-top villains, but real-life, self-absorbed jerks who hurt other people.
*Sebastian. A good, sweet, guy. I wish there had been a little more insight on the friendship. I was a little confused more than once about what kind of feelings Lola had for him.
The Not-so-good:
*I felt like there was a lack of an explanation for a lot of things, like there were pieces missing. There were parts where I was like, "Wait, did I miss something?". I think maybe the book could have been a little longer, more things explained a little more fully.
*Jack and Lola's relationship. There wasn't enough build up for me. They barely knew each other before they were "in love". Jack was confusing with his back-and-forth about Lola. Sweet to her one minute, a jerk the next.
*No closure for Lola and her mom, I wish it had been resolved at least a little bit. I think that is an important part of Lola's story.

Wow..
This book was somewhat draining for me. Lola's home life was in despair. She had pulled away from her closest friends, she was in a constant state of anxiety which caused her to be a shell of her former self. Then she met Jack, and she didn't feel so alone. He made her feel at ease during a time when she was anything but. She walked into her home one night, and knew things would never be the same. She had already lost her mother, but after that night when her mother didn't come for her, she knew there was no hope that her mother loved her. How could a mother not be with her child after what Lola had just experienced. Going through the worst, brought Lola's aunt to her. Lola finally felt as if she had a home. someone finally was looking out for her. Lola finally began healing. I probably cried every other page in the first half (or more) of this book, but it showed you the darkness in people, as well as how someone or several someones can help you find the light.

Painful writing and character development
I gave this book 2 stars because while I disliked pretty much everything about it, I did end up finishing it. The plot felt forced and the relationships unbelievable. I kept getting the feeling I had missed the portion of the book where I was given the backstory so I cared about the characters. Instead, you are plunged into this girl's life with little fanfare and development and then I was expected to care about her and her relationships. Instead of working on plot line and character development, the author used the abuse in the story as nothing more than a hook to get you to read or care. There was no fresh or thoughtful insight into what abuse can do to a person and it honestly just felt like a cheap tactic to force you to feel something. All in all, I would skip this book.
