Wolverine takes out the NYC Mob in his downtime from the X-Men. It's pretty much that. Decent enough, art is good, story is straightforward, just Wolverine pulling a Frank Castle on a good chunk of the mob after a little girl is kidnapped because her father didn't have collection money.
The last issue (186) of the collection you might as well skip; it's not Sean Chen doing the art (which I had liked) it's some other joker who has no idea how to draw Wolverine or the Punisher. Pretty much the 2 of them kick the shit out of each other because Frank doesn't like that Logan was on his turf. Stupid issue, stupid art, poor execution, and I don't think Castle would have a problem with Wolverine taking out a bunch of mob guys.

OK read, nothing essential, but better than some Wolverine books that try to get too complicated or forget that people love to see Logan stab the shit out of bad dudes.

Sometimes I had a 4 star experience during this, but there was always a 3 star demon whispering in my ear until his 1 star brother came busting out of the last few pages.
Overall this is a Garth Ennis Punisher (2000) story with Punisher removed and Wolverine inserted for no reason. There is an obsession with the Godfather films and a heavy Sopranos hand not only in the titles of the issues, but in the claw fodder characters.
It is fun though and surprisingly good compared to all of the garbage Tieri wrote for Wolverine before this.

Artist Sean Chen does a very good job of invoking Steve Dillon's Punisher art with more realistic noses.

The last issue is a strange attempt at broad comedy. A cartoonish collection of panels where Wolverine beats on Punisher basically telling him that Logan did his stories better than he could, and then it turns into a homophobic joke that did not age well.

If you read the previous Tieri book then this is a good palette cleanser. If you never read any of Garth Ennis' Punisher stuff, then just read that instead.

Continuing the X-read of 2017...

If you thought Tieri's homophobia was too subtle before, the last story in this book makes it more blatant (and is just a really bad issue regardless. Poorly scripted, bad art, nothing worthwhile at all.)

The rest of the book isn't that bad. It's a cliché story that has been done a thousand times but it isn't written poorly. It's just... Well, a punisher story - not a Wolverine story. Just my opinion, but there wasn't a lot to love about the story.

I hope that there isn't a lot more Tieri coming up in the X-history, though. Not sure I can handle too much more.

So thanks to a combo of Essentials and Marvel Unlimited, I have now read all 189 issues if Wolverine vol 2. (Vol 1 is the Miller mini.) And I can say, with absolute certainty, that the Frank Tieri issues are *by far* the worst comics in that run. (It doesnt help that Sean Chen pencils the vast majority of them, and his work is waaaaay to clean for a Wolverine comic.)

Was an entertaining read. Nothing is really different afterwards vs. before but I enjoyed it

The slur at the end of the last issue of this run sours the whole otherwise enjoyably silly experience unfortunately.

Wolverine is in a bar when he overhears some hit men talking about getting back at someone by stealing away their little girl.
Wolverine gets pretty pissed about it, but in typical Wolvie fashion outsmarts the men into confessing where she is.
Logan whips their asses and finds the child. He hids he away, and finds the mob responsible for the hit.
He proposes a truce, he will go after a rival gang if they forgive the debt the man has and leave the child alone.
Freddo agrees and Logan goes after Roman.
Roman is a sick, twisted individual who preys on others fears and uses them. Roman wants to meet with Logan and trys to trick him into his lion pit. But Logan and the lions square off and come to a understanding.. Logan rules.
Logan get the Roman and in the meantime Freddie screws up, he captures the little girl and her dad to try to bring Logan into submission. (bad idea)
Logan ends up turning the tables on him and Freddie sleeps with the fishes

"Mister, can I ask you a question?"
"Sure, darlin'."
"Are you Spider-Man?"

Fantastic. Wolverine takes on the mob, playing two families against each other like Red Harvest or A Fistful of Dollars. Wolverine's even drawn like a shorter Clint Eastwood with more facial hair. And the art is amazing.

The revelation of Wolverine's motivations at the end of the story was fantastic.

The last issue is more cartoonish, a sort of satyr play where Punisher tries to kill Wolverine in a shopping mall because of his actions in the mob war/Wolverine butting in on his turf. He actually tells Wolverine to stick to mutant stories, it's very meta. I liked it. At the end, Wolverine finds a bunch of old muscle magazines in Punisher's motorcycle and concludes he's gay ('They're suspects! Everyone's a suspect!', Punisher argues). It's just a cheap shot homophobic joke, but it actually makes sense. Who is more likely to be a closeted, repressed gay man than Frank 'The Punisher' Castle?

While this is stratospherically better than the rest of Tieri's run on Wolverine, it's really just a bunch of mob tropes with Wolverine draped around them. The first issue, where a bunch of lower level mob guys are telling stories is the peak of Tieri's run. It's fun, it's decently told, and well-framed until the last panel where, as usual, Tieri has to insert a macho punchline to assert how much of a manly man man he is.

From there, the story devolves into a Grand Theft Auto storyline with touches of Batman Year One & The Long Halloween, but in a derivative, not very interesting way.

It's not Completely Terrible, but there's also no reason to hunt it down, apart from the first chapter (issue #181 of Wolverine may be worth tracking down, as you can probably find it in a dollar bin somewhere).

If you're not familiar with Marvel's character Wolverine, take a good look at the cover - this is NOT fuzzy bunnies.

If you are a Wolverine fan, go for it - this is "the man, doing what he's best at" (and he's the best at what he does).

Even though he's not my favorite X-Man, I am a fan of this tough little Canuck. I'd heard of this Wolverine story arc before but this was the first time that I'd read it. Nice. SNIKT!

Also a fan of the Punisher, I was glad to see his appearances throughout the story (die hard Punisher fans may be disappointed by the last story in the book).

Graphic novels have always been popular at the library but I've never paid them much attention. While looking at the is book, trying to decide if it was damaged enough to discard, I ended up reading it. Perhaps it was the secret love of X-Men that did it. Anyway, it was good read in a black is black and white is white kind of way. Logan did all this expected Wolverine tricks, the bad guys got what was coming and naturally enough one of the bad guys turned out to be an honourable all-right sort of guy after all.

This is a great story about Logan taking on the mob. The action was sweet. The little visual homages were fun to see.
