I started this book because I felt I might have some psychological issues related to alcohol. I had come to realize that I was using it as a way to relax, and I wanted to free myself from that mindset and eventually reduce my consumption. I thought that if I truly understood its effects on me, I would feel more motivated to change.
Rather than focusing only on its physical effects, this book completely changed the way I see alcohol. It made me realize that what I once saw as its benefits were actually illusions, and that even those seemingly positive aspects are ultimately harmful. It gave me a completely different perspective.
As I was reading, my cravings for alcohol decreased significantly. Recognizing that these cravings are more psychological than physical, and seeing how a shift in perspective can make them easier to overcome, was something I found really powerful.
I would recommend this book to anyone, whether they consider themselves an alcoholic or not, who feels they have an unhealthy or unwanted relationship with alcohol. This could be people who think it helps them socialize, relax, or even sleep better.
Not the most well-written book on the topic, very repetitive, BUT I think the science-based approach to alcohol and addiction was very helpful for me. There are a lot of things I reflected on a lot while reading this, definitely recommend to anyone wanting to readjust their relationship with drinking.
