I read several of these from my local library when I was a kid and remembered them fondly. Not quite as thrilling to read as an adult but it was fun for nostalgic reasons and brought back a little sliver of that old time enjoyment.

I don't think I'll ever read a Three Investigators novel that will be under 3 stars. This one wasn't one of the best simply because I thought it was a little predictable. Still good, but just seemed to lack the spark of the better novels in the series. I'm not sure if it was locale, characters, or what that kept this from the top level. Not bad, just not one of the best. As I said, thought, even the lesser books in this series are good!

The solution to the mystery was clever, but it lacked the creepy factor I enjoy the most and , thus a simple 3 stars. The cover is *incredibly* misleading.

Ah, the days of no “bad people”, if you know what I mean! These kids will get in the car with anyone! But it was fun for what it was, children’s fiction. I thought the lives of the kids was very accurate, as I grew up in the 70’s also. They had a cool hideout and I really enjoyed how the author had the kids thinking about using historical references to solve the mystery.

2010 review - Well, I started my reading year with a cracker here. The boys are on a buying trip with Aunt Mathilda when they run into Java Jim, who desperately wants an old chest belonging to Angus Gunn. He had a house on Phantom Lake and it was rumoured he’d buried treasure on the property, but no-one has ever found it. Taking in a ghost town, a trip to (real locations, I discovered, in) Santa Barbara and several cases of mistaken identity, this is a cracking adventure, told with flair and originality from start to finish. There’s good interplay between the boys (including a couple of comedy moments), it’s a good mystery, there’s a great atmosphere (the use of Christmas lights, plus the weather) and there’s a nicely spooky sequence amongst the cypress trees on Cabrillo Island. Very much recommended.
2014 update - There’s not much to add to this review, though sometimes the pace of it does seem a bit too quick, the rubber mask is a bit much and there’s a sequence that reminded me of “The Mystery Of The Dancing Devil” (also by Arden) with a curio shop and a boat. But the locations are well used, the trail of the villain is littered with red herrings and all in all, it’s a good, fun read. Recommended.
2020 update - Still in agreement with the reviews above, though the ending does seem a little rushed and Rory’s explanation seems to come out of the blue. Still well worth a read though.
2024 update - Agreed with above, I always enjoy this more than I expect too.

This was a fun, Hardy Boys type mystery that dealt with hidden pirate treasure. It kept me interested and engaged. The three boys are a good team and I enjoy how they work together. I don’t quite understand why every description of the head investigator Jupiter refers to his weight. The stout boy, the portly boy, the overweight boy…. Ok we got that he’s bigger than the other boys, but he was also clever, witty, and brave yet there was no description of that…. It was written in the mid 70’s and a product of that time. It was like a Scooby Doo meets Hardy Boys episode. Engaging and enjoyable .

The Jones Salvage Yard picks up an extra cool booby trapped trunk; which immediately brings in an interesting character called Java Jim. Java Jim spikes the boys interest in the trunk, so they search it as soon as they can. They find another hidden compartment in the trunk, which leads them on a trip to Phantom Lake. And Phantom Lake is where the real investigative work begins. They discover trees that look like phantoms, an old ghost town, and people aren't everything they say they are.

A little better than average tale of the Three Investigators. I gave it three however, because of the rubber mask. I hate those, they never fool anyone and it was always obvious on film who was wearing one.

Even with that, it was a good tale and the ID of the villain could have gone either way until the very end. Excellent work!

Find it. Buy it. Read it!

The Three Investigators is a juvenile detective series published in the 60s, 70s, and 80s that spans about 43 books. They feature three teenage boys who mostly investigate paranormal type stuff that they debunk (somewhat like Scooby-Doo) or other abnormal crimes that the police do not handle. They report their cases to Alfred Hitchcock or a fake director depending on which versions you read. Their base of operations is hidden away in the depths of a junkyard and it has multiple hidden entrances. I discovered these books in the library during middle school and promptly read them all. As such, I have a lot of nostalgia for these books. Unfortunately it seems only a handful are available in Kindle format at this point.

The Secret of Phantom Lake is #19 in the series. The story involves the boys hunting for a pirate treasure at the same time that some nefarious characters seem to be after it. It was OK though rather predictable. I read an online ebook version of this since most of these books are out of print.

This is a good entry into the series, but it has highlighted some flaws in the process of using multiple authors. I think this may be the first book in the series to specify the time of year where this case takes place. As a result, there are several assumptions about the passage of time that we must make.
But despite this, we are to understand that Red Gate Rover has been reactivated after Pete blocked it off after their adventure with the Singing Serpent. But this was never indicated, likely an omission in the canon between the authors.

The other element that is starting to get predictable by these writers is that the Three Investigators must not trust any adults with the exception of their family and friends. The adults of this world simply love to pull off impersonations at every opportunity.

I really enjoyed this story! I loved the mystery and the dedication each boy had to helping others. I thought there were some weak spots in the story itself with the mystery that seemed a little weird. Especially the fact that they said over and over again that Gunn's wife would have been the only one to know the location of the treasure according to the clues. However, she didn't find it, but yet some kids who knew nothing about this man figured it out in a matter of days. Seems a little weird! But I did feel that it came together well enough, and I think any youth would enjoy this story!

" ... Tesori, fantasmi, isole senza nome e gente morta cento anni fa! Siete diventati tutti matti ... "

Ever read a book and at the end say, 'That just didn't work?'. This was one of those books. In some ways, the whole thing felt contrived for the sake of contrivance oddly somewhat like the last season of Game of Thrones. Did anyone really think this plot out? It was really a puzzle story with red herrings tossed all over.

(Setting cerita tahun 1972)

The style of writing and the characters are very much a relic of their time - not having grown up with these books I had no nostalgia to make me like this, instead it just 'was'. Still a fun and easy little read to distract from the more involved aspects of life ;)
