2022 - The first time I've read it, it was in english and I LOVED this love story between a human woman and a therianthrope/'man' dog. I'm not a mangas reader, so this was quite new to me. The consent aspect was good, especially now that I've read others mangas and realized it's not a usual thing. I was quite new to monster romance (and still is) and it was a nice way to discover an other take to those type of HEA. I liked the style of the illustrations, especially about the 'beast man' but was less a fan of the over size boobs vs over skinny aspect of the heroine. But overall I enjoyed the story and was impatient to read book two to see their relationship develop and learn more about the therianthrope society. So when I discovered there was a french paperback, and saw the gorgeous cover, I had to have it. - 4 stars
2023 - I've re-read the book, and I have to admit now some aspects of the story, especially the way the woman is portrayed - the power dynamic in the relationship is presented, make me uncomfortable. Especially as I discovered the author is actually a woman, which surprised me because of the ways full of clichés the heroine is represented (naive, considers herself stupid, keep apologizing, thinks she's 'an easy woman' because she gets wet during intercourse, over focus on the feelings). I don't know if it's the fact that I've read it in french this time, but the way the heroine keep presenting herself didn't sit well with me. Or the hero, when in rut, saying he can't control himself (because of the effect she's on him) and if she stays it's her fault and she has to accept the consequences (aka penetrative s3x). The heroine makes it clear that she's ok with this situation and want to have s3x with him, but the power dynamic being clearly not equal, it still made me uncomfortable.
Maybe I struggled more this time with my re-read because in the meantime I've read the webtoon Atnomen (also written by a woman), which present a love story between a young human woman and a gargoyle. And even if she's a virgin and inexperience (like Hana here) and Rain the gargoyle so very big/strong/experience (like Sanathi here) we never feel that the power dynamic is not equitable between the two main characters. Also the representation of the female character/body is nuanced. That's why I know it's possible to present this kind of love story without objectifying the female body and with communication/respect between the MCs, without loosing on the heat aspect during the sexy times.
About the consent aspect, it's something I honestly don't understand in 2023 that dubious consent in mangas is so common and accepted?! Of course it's always the female character or in a MM story, the male character presented as the 'sensitive' one aka the feminine one who get abused and force to have s3x. It keeps on maintaining the idea that if a man is forcing himself on his partner, it's ok. Which shouldn't be accepted. - 3 stars
