All Emery wants for Christmas is someone to share it with. It looks like he might finally be getting his wish in Ross, the sexy customer he’s been crushing on for months. But neither of them counted on the zombies or on being caught in the worst blizzard in half a century. Even with a plan for contending with the zombie hordes, surviving will take a miracle.
It’s not exactly how Emery dreamed of spending Christmas with Ross, but he can’t think of a better way to spend a zombie apocalypse.
Piper Vaughn is a romance author and lifelong fan of the genre. Since writing their first love story at age eleven, they’ve known writing in some form was exactly what they wanted to do. A reader to the core, Piper loves nothing more than getting lost in a great book.
Piper is of Puerto Rican descent and grew up in a diverse neighborhood in Chicago. They love putting faces and characters of every ethnicity in their stories, making their fictional worlds as colorful as the real one. Above all, Piper believes there’s no one way to have an HEA, and every person deserves to see themselves reflected on the page.
There’s nothing quite like a violent and gruesome zombie apocalypse to get one into the Christmas spirit!
In its limited page count, Zombie Wonderland provided some serious thrills and chills, while also delivering on the sweet and sexy moments between near strangers Ross and Emery.
This was fast paced and riveting. My only wish is that it was longer.
Complaints first: it was too short; I want more. I also wanted more character background information, but I get it might have slowed down the fast pace of the story. Maybe a little character bio at the start
What I liked: It was pretty fast paced, once Ross charged through the diner door it never really slowed down.
The visuals were good. Maybe a little too good at parts, had me saying “oh gross” more than once, but I loved it. Zombies are gross so I was expecting to have some grossness but I wasn’t expecting to get such good visuals. I can still picture the zombies in my head.
The two guys were so adorable. Even though we don’t know a lot of their background they are so cute together, their cuteness evens out the zombie grossness.
Oh and it was Christmas and the Christmas gift Ross gave Emery was so sweet. Would highly recommend this cute Zombie Christmas story
We get Piper Vaughn MM goodness with an ordinary guy, Emery who pines for a diner customer, Ross. He's alone on Christmas Eve waiting to close. Then in comes Ross, covered in blood.
Insert Zombies.
This is the kind of Santa Jizz story I can get behind. We get action, gore and romance.
Emery is working alone at a diner on Christmas Eve. He’s been hoping that the handsome guy that has been coming in to eat everyday for 3 months will show up. They haven’t spoken much except for exchanging names, but Ross has been giving him looks and smiles and Emery thinks he can finally work up the courage to ask him out. It would be nice not to spend Christmas alone.
But when Ross finally shows up, things don’t go exactly like Emery planned. There’re zombies attacking people outside and Ross is there to take Emery with him to his Grandfather’s cabin.
There’s lots of action and excitement along the way.
And when they finally make it to the cabin, well let’s just say they’re eager to feel alive. What better way to do that than to get it on.
I loved this short story. There’s excitement, sex and ZOMBIES!! Win!! ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Emery works at a diner and is there alone, working on Christmas when the guy he has a crush on, Ross, comes in. Just when Emery thinks he is about to have his Christmas wish come true, all hell breaks lose and the zombies invade. Zombie Wonderland is a good combination of bloody, gory, zombies and a sweet, sexy love story. I loved it:).
Goodness, I love a good zombie story, especially if it’s mish mashed with humor and a bit o the romance type thang. This rightchere give me all three, and more.
I didn’t understand what was happening, but I could tell that there was something seriously wrong with that guy. His skin was a sick, leaden gray, and there were several large gouges down his left side. As he moved, swiping at Ross with clawed hands, I saw the muscle and sinew shifting through those gaping cuts. The sight of it made me shudder.
Poor Emery, he’s knee deep in it, and this is just the beginning.
Vaughn’s descriptions are part of what keep the adrenaline flowing while reading this delish apoco-treat. The energy is a physical thing itself, manifested in the “rules” in this particular zombie-overrun world, as well as the running and the click-it-or-ticket driving and the pelting of the ice pellets while that’s all happening. The creating of an unrelenting sense of immediacy and a narrowing of my focus to this singular day, work together in ratcheting up the intensity as each page passes.
Something else I really like about this story are all of the small details. These things that would normally seem easily surmountable are the very same things that make it a challenge just to survive, impeding the ability to keep on moving, keep breathing. Emery and Ross are in the $&!% and it’s coming closer, and faster, and more and more and more.
I could hear footsteps crunching in the icy snow behind me, but I didn’t look back. I shoved the tip of my shoe into one of the diamond-shaped holes in the fence and started climbing. The fence was about ten feet high, and the cold metal bit into my fingers, but I made it to the top without incidents, hiked my leg over, and started down the other side. At that point I could see Ross through the chain-link, descending the incline with more grace than I had.
The adrenaline is pumping! What’s cool is that, not long after this, a tender and warm moment occurs, showing the ebb and flow of this story and how well that’s accomplished. It also tells us a bit more about these two characters, while keeping us guessing. What will the end bring? How will it end? Will it be gory and horrible? Sweet and sigh-worthy? A mixture of both? Either way, I just know it left me wanting more in the good kind of way.
There are a few spots where some words feel overused in a single paragraph or page, creating a few small hitches in the literary giddy-up. I can’t even find one again to give as an example because I honestly didn’t care due to all of the zombies and gore and hotness.
I also felt like I wanted to know at least a bit more about Ross. We're in Emery's head, which is a great place to be for this story, but it made it difficult to always connect with some of Ross' actions and understand his motivations. This is why I'd love to have another story with these two. :)
Emery and Ross have chemistry, along with various skills that might or might not be so helpful during a zombie-pocalypse, complimenting each other. Oh wait, back to the chemistry: ohhhh yeahhh, mmm hmmm. ;) The intimate scenes between them might not break any new ground but they work.
There was just enough zombie and gore and intensity to give me that itty bitty kinda adrenaline surge. Because, ya know, zombies.
And Christmas Eve.
And Ross and Emery. Ross actually made me swoony sigh a bit, and Emery is kind and a good guy. He had the kind of gut level reactions most of us would probably have if we found ourselves in the bony, bloody, shocking grip of a zombie-pocalypse.
I got constant motion, varied zombie takedowns and a sweet start to what feels like a long life together for Emery and Ross.
Definitely a unique take on the Christmas tale. :)
Confession time. I have such a soft spot for holiday tales. Throw in a dash of romance, my heart thump, thump, thumps a happy beat. But tell me a story with romance, blood, and gore all done up in pretty, pretty holiday lights? Well hell…I’m yours forever! :)
”Body parts were scattered across the snow, obscene against the pure white backdrop.”
Welcome to Piper Vaughn’s Zombie Wonderland!
What’s a guy to do when the dead rise up and start biting, gnawing, and tearing people to bits on Christmas Eve? Take off running with the hot guy he’s been crushing on all year of course! Haha…Can Emery and Ross survive the holidays and an end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it zombie attack?
From car crashes to brain bashing fun, this short zombie story has it all! Action, running, romance, suspense, and two likeable characters readers will root for from the first zombie til the last. Vaughn’s world can go from gross and gooey to heartwarming and sexy in a blink of an eye.
”Despite his obvious strength, he held me so gently, as if I were as fragile as glass. And for the first time in my life, I felt like I’d finally found where I belonged.”
Loved this tale to pieces! :) A fun, bloody ride for any zombie fan.
**One side note and bonus**
Do you have an item, event, word, or phrase you just love to see pop up in your fiction? I know I’m a geek, but I adore…well…my thing is gumball machines. Haha…No idea why—probably left over from childhood. But these old school, glass, stand alone magical orbs make me grin like a maniac whenever I see one on the screen or in print. Especially my horror! When they tip, shatter, and explode with a splash of rolling color that causes all sorts of mayhem for the heroes, it just...never fails to make me happy. Haha…LOVE it!
Anywho…just felt like sharing yet another weird quirk. :)
... amidst the whole zombie attack, this is just one sweet adorable story!!!
I love how it starts a bit slow, as we have a quick set-up of Emery, a waiter, who has been crushing over a sexy customer, Ross for months, and slightly wishes that Ross will come to the diner on Christmas Eve.
But when Ross indeed comes barging in, he has blood on his neck, and he looks frantic ... and that's when the whole action starts. It's just a quick pace after that, with Ross and Emery trying to dodge a bunch of undeads. It's bloody, and gory, and we have zombies eating people (there's vomit too, since Emery can't help himself to fight the nausea) ... and my GOD, you just want them to survive. Because it's just a beginning for them, right, because Emery has just been given the chance to talk to his crush, and you want them to make it.
The story is written from Emery's point of view. It's just wonderful to read about him ... he sort of "grows" up during the attack. From this shy and lonely waiter, to being able to fight his own fight against the zombies. He seems befuddled on why Ross is going to all the trouble of saving him ... and that's make the ending is just sweet. Love the Christmas present that Ross gives to Emery, showing Emery that well, he has indeed been noticed
I'm not going to lie. I started reading this thinking, there is no way the romance is going to be able to trump the zombie attack. Poor Emery, with asthma, lonely, stuck at the diner and unaware of that's happening, just waiting and hoping for a glimpse of Ross, his secret crush. It's Christmas Eve, so the odds of seeing Ross are low, but still. What he gets is a hero saving the day, when Ross comes to find him and save him from, yes, a zombie attack. They undergo some horrific scenes with the zombies, and I love that Emery doesn't take it in stride but has feelings about what they have to do to survive.
I was proven wrong, in that the romance does stand strong amidst the carnage, and sweetness is allowed to give hope to the situation. They are precious and bad ass at one time.
Nothing says Merry Christmas like....zombies? If you say so, Ms Vaughn!
This was a very exciting, edge of your seat story that takes at Christmas during a zombie outbreak. It has all the hallmarks of your average zombie movie- flesh eaters, dangerous car rides, a crash, blood, gore, and one thing most other zombie stories don't have- two people who find something that just might grow into love. I left this story cautiously optimistic, and really wanting to know more. I want to know if Emery and Ross make it to their warm place next Christmas. (which, considering when this story came out, would make that THIS Christmas, hint hint Ms Vaughn!)
OMG Zombies!!! I loved Emery and Ross both. We don't know much about Ross other then he's a regular at the diner. Emery has a crush on him but too fearful of rejection to say anything. Then zombies happen!!! (run) Turns out Ross likes Emery and comes to his recuse at the diner. As a fan of horror books and movies I loved the blood and guts parts of the book. I hope Piper does a sequel cause I'm curious if they zombies stick around or not and how Emery and Ross are doing.
This was a great book! I wasn't sure how Christmas and zombies would go together, but surprisingly they did better than I thought. For a short book, Zombie Wonderland combined action, horror, and romance to create a fully fleshed out story that was a very entertaining read. I would have loved to of learned the fate the humankind, but maybe that is a story for another day.
Ok, I like Zombie, well, not invite to dinner kind of like, but I like reading about them! And Piper did a great job, no cute and fuzzy Zombies here, but gross and gruesome ones! I liked Ross and Emery, but I wanted more, more about them, what's going to happen, will they make it, how will they make it, what caused the epidemic? Questions over questions...but that's a good sign ..:)
Very good short paranormal m/m holiday romance about a waiter who's rescued from encroaching zombies by the customer he's been crushing on for weeks. I'm not a fan of gruesome stories, but I am fan of Piper's writing, so I braved it.
This may be the most fascinating m/m novella I've read in a while. It's for sure the best Christmas-Eve-finding-romance-during-a-zombie-apocalypse book I've ever read.
The zombie parts were vivid and graphic and horrific and fantastically well done. The descriptions of everything were detailed, but just as it got to the point where I wanted to shut my eyes and say "eew, no more!" the story moved on and action happened or romance happened, and it was all great fun.
Ross was a fascinating character. He's one I'm pretty sure I wouldn't approve of as the love interest for any MC in any setting other than this one. He's so sweet to Emery, and so good for him, too: patient when he needs to be and pushy when their lives depend on it. Like I said, he's fascinating.
I thought this story was great fun. I might make it a Christmas tradition to re-read, kind of like some people do with A Christmas Carol. ;)
A quick romp through the snow and zombies to get to a hidden cabin, all on a Christmas Eve that Emery thought he would be spending alone. It's a good thing that Ross drives by the diner to get him, then.
The story is a bit short for my taste. I would've liked to see more of the cause and the aftermath. Without it, the story feels incomplete, though they feel they are relatively safe at the end of it. I give it 3.5 stars.
This was such a fun read. This story of a budding romance in the midst of a zombie invasion is outrageous and yet the author makes it feel so real you are on the edge of your seat wondering how Emery and Ross can survive. Loved every word right to the the happy end.
This was a fun, little piece. Just what I was in the mood for. I wished it was longer, although I have no idea where it would have gone. It was set up for them to be stationary for the long-haul. I'd still be interested in some snippets at least and/or maybe closer to when things... settle down? Lol.
But I found myself really liking both characters and their short background of them meeting. It really helped set their moods, and the situation (being the zombie apocalypse and all) made their behavior so much more real. Ross swoops in and nothing slows down then until the end when things get hot and heavy!
I really liked the way they were portrayed, though. Both in shock and just doing what they could to survive and help each other. They weren't a couple badasses with the same characteristics. They both reacted differently to the threat, and we really get a feel of who they are as people, even with this being so short.
I appreciated Emery's . The gift that Ross gives Emery at the end is so sweet. If you're squeamish do be cautious about this one! There are very graphic violent scenes, which were very appropriate. Nothing is thrown in here to just be violent or gross or anything like that. It is all necessary.
Anyway, I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would, and I will definitely be checking out another by this author.
'I wasn’t in the mood to listen to other people’s festivity, fake or otherwise.'
(Sameee)
"A sudden bang on the glass window behind me made me jump, a distinctly unmasculine yelp escaping before I could stop it. I looked over my shoulder, not sure what I was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t a shirtless, crazy-looking man with blood foaming from his mouth."
-unexpected love story during a zombie apocalypse set on Christmas
This was really short but still an enjoyable read with lots of zombies and a bit of romance. There's non-stop action from the beginning as Emery and Ross try to make it to Ross's grandfather's cabin where they'll be safe. I was pulled into the action immediately and pleasantly grossed out by the zombie gore. Sounds weird, but what else do you expect when you read a book with zombies.
Emery was adorably sweet and every time he would panic, I just wanted to hug him. But thankfully, Ross was there to help Emery and keep him calm; these two worked so well together. Since it's really short and told all from Emery's POV, there's a lot about Ross that is left a mystery. I really wanted more of an explanation for Ross's skills and how he was able to stay so calm about everything. At one point, he explains that his grandfather, who was a paranoid veteran, taught him how to take care of himself and set up the cabin, but it's just mentioned briefly.
Overall, a fun and quick read with a budding relationship and plenty of zombie action.
A lovely zombie story. It was like seeing a gay couple's side of things in the tv show The Walking Dead. If you've seen the show then you know how absolutely gruesome this stuff gets, and Piper described it gruesomely well.
However, I felt like this was just a glimpse, rather than a full story, and I would have liked to see more. There's so much more to this story and these characters than the 29 pages we get. I'd still like to know what Ross was doing, sitting in the diner and writing. Is he an author? Also why Emery has no family, why he's all alone. And what happens next? Oh the unanswered questions...yet the fact that I'm craving for more indicates how good this story is.
Argh, I don't even really like Zombie books that much and I wanted this to be longer, to explore the attraction and relationship between the MCs more, to tell us what happened & why the zombie apocalypse started.
Also, having a fully-stocked and ready doomsday bunker compound (even if they have to thank a dead, crazy, conspiracy nut uncle) was just a little too convenient, ya know? There's something about the struggle for survival that makes a story more engrossing and after those thrilling escape scenes this was just like...yeah, we're already prepared so...yeah. The End. Meh.
I read this in one go. I'll shamefully admit that I had to keep the lights on - I'm NOT a big girl when it comes to horror. I wouldn't had read this book if it hadn't been for the book bingo challenge, but I'm SO glad I did. This book was extremely exciting and had me hooked from the beginning. I loved the and Emery's whole reaction during the escape. And ...wow... The writing itself is magnificent. I'll definitely read more books by Piper Vaughn.
This book definitely left me wanting more. I wanted more of the background on the characters, especially Sam. It was too short and I really hope there will be more to the story. I loved the fast paced nature of the story. It was go from the time Sam showed up to the end. The descriptions were awesome. Not just of the zombie killings but the environment as well. Wonderful short read.
