About the author

Gianrico Carofiglio (born 1961) is a novelist and former anti-Mafia judge in the Italian city of Bari. His debut novel, Involuntary Witness, was published in 2002 and translated into English in 2005 by Patrick Creagh and published by the Bitter Lemon Press, and has been adapted as the basis for a popular television series in Italy. The subsequent novels were translated by Howard Curtis.

Carofiglio won the 2005 Premio Bancarella award for his novel "Il passato è una terra straniera". He is also Honorary President of The Edinburgh Gadda Prize which celebrates the work of Carlo Emilio Gadda.

In linea con gli altri due libri che ho letto sulle vicende dell'avvocato Guerrieri. La lettura è piacevole, ti prende. A dispetto di una trama molto scarna, decisamente prevedibile ed in alcuni casi un po' traballante i romanzi di Carofiglio catturano l'attenzione e ti trascinano alla fine in un batter d'occhio. Una lettura veramente piacevole.
Sarà perchè l'ho letto per primo, non so dire, ma "ad occhi chiusi" continua ad essere il mio preferito tra i romanzi di Carofiglio

Third in the series of Guido Guerrieri legal mysteries, this installment finds our Italian defense attorney taking on the appeal of a client who does not remember him.

Fabio Paolicelli, currently serving a sixteen-year sentence for drug smuggling, has no recollection of taking part in the beating of a small boy in a green coat; no memory at all of that youthful crime or his victim's face and, consequently, no realization that the esteemed lawyer he's trying to employ to get him out of prison has dreamed for a lifetime of the day he might finally take his vengeance. Our avvocato's mind reels with the serendipitous implications of defending - or perhaps not so very much defending - this bully of old. And it certainly doesn't hurt that Fabio's wife is so terribly attractive, and earnest, and looking for a savior. Revenge might be very sweet indeed, if he could just get past the ethical quandary. Some nights he succeeds, it is true, but how troublesome the niggling instinct that Fabio is actually innocent and may deserve an effort his counselor would prefer not to give!

Carofiglio retains both the sardonic tone and mid-life melancholy that make his stories so authentic and amusing. Less satisfying (to me) is his continued over-reliance on courtroom argument to draw his tale to a close. Still more of a lawyer than a writer - which is understandable, I suppose, given his renown in that first of fields.

Ne sjećam se tačno kako sam nabasao na "detektivske" romane Gianrica Carofiglia. Mislim da mi je na faksu neko od profesora iz Barija spomenuo ovog advokata, takođe iz Barija, koji piše jako lijepe romane koje oni zovu giallo, što će reći žuti. Nekada davno je bila jedna edicija jeftinih detektivskih romana u Italiji i bila je žuta zbog toga sve krimiće od tada oni zovu žuti. Ja sam tada pročitao knjigu "Le perfezioni provvisorie" i oduševio se. Kako čovjek jednostavno, a lijepo piše, kakav ima osjećaj za detalj, za građenje radnje, za stvaranje napetosti, za opisivanje likova. Onda sam 2012. bio u Bariju i u stanu nekom igrom slučaja našao njegovu knjigu "Una notte a Bari", koja nije krimić, već priča o trojici prijatelja koji se nakon dugo vremena sastaju, sabiraju uspomene i otkrivaju šta ih je to razdvojilo. Malo je reći da mi se i ta svidjela. Onda sam ljetos nakon četiri godine opet bio u Bariju i kupio ovu knjigu između par njegovih i pročitao je za dva dana.

Ono što me kod njega oduševljava je kako sa samo jednim detaljem uspije da ti u mozak utisne neki sasvim sporedni lik od nevelike važnosti za romanesknu strukturu. Na primjer, kad opisuje jednog taksistu koji uvijek ima kamaru knjigu na suvozačevom sjedištu, jer ima velike pauze, a voli da čita. Ili kad opisuje jednog gimnazijskog profesora koji je čitav život mrzio svoj posao, a onda je otišavši u penziju otvorio noćnu knjižaru/kafić, koja radi od 22:00 do 6:00. Naime, čovjek pati od hronične nesanice i to je period kad zaista može da radi, a knjižara mu je i u tom periodu puna. U 6:00 on podijeli kolače koji se nisu pojeli preostalim gostima, popuši jedinu cigaru i ode da odspava, jer tek tada može malo da uhvati sna. A to je samo jedan od likova.

Glavni lik ovog i još par njegovih romana je Guido Guerrieri, jedan advokat koji se nekako uvijek uhvati u zamku da za svoje klijente mora da se bavi i nečim što liči na detektivski posao. Da istražuje okolnosti iza određenih događaja koje su ih i dovele do njega. Guerrieri je jedna krajnje simpatična pojava, neoženjen, ali ne kurvar, kao što to često ispadne u ovakvim knjigama i filmovima, već više neko koga sudbina baš neće. On je neko ko vječito ide sam u kino. Valjda to dosta govori o njemu.

Da ne dužim više, knjiga mi se baš svidjela. Nažalost, kod nas nije prevođena, koliko znam, ali čim moja mala izdavačka kuća zaživi obećavam da ću lično prevesti neke od njegovih knjiga da i vi možete uživati u njima :)

L'avvocato Guerrieri è un personaggio affascinante, irresistibile. Adoro il suo modo di affrontare la vita, le lunghe chiacchierate con sé stesso e il suo spiccato e strambo senso dell'umorismo. Questo è uno dei miei libri preferiti che lo vedono come protagonista e probabilmente lo dico ogni volta che ne leggo uno con lui(traete voi le conclusioni.) Bello,scorrevole, interessante, un caso particolare e per niente noioso. Lo adoro e leggetevelo perché non saprei che altro dirvi per convincervi!!!

Carofiglio just keeps getting better, as Reasonable Doubts, book number three in this series, proves. While this book certainly has the makings of a good mystery contained within the story, Carofiglio continues his tradition of giving his character top billing rather than the crime. The focus on the internal life of Guido Guerrieri is a hallmark of all of the books in this series, but there is also enough tension rising external to Guerrieri's thoughts so that everything comes together to make an interesting and compelling story. Yet, as is the case in all three books so far, when all is said and done, it is the character of Guerrieri himself that is the draw.

The novel opens with the case of Fabio Paolicelli, convicted some time back for crossing the border with 40 kilos of cocaine hidden within the body of the car, now in prison after having signed a confession of guilt. Now he wants to appeal his conviction, and after hearing other convicts in prison discussing which defense lawyers are the worst and the best, Paolicelli decides it's got to be Guido Guerrieri. As it just so happens, Guerrieri is already familiar with Paolicelli -- when Guido was just a boy, Fabio and his group of thugs accosted him, ordering him to remove his coat, beating him up when he wouldn't. The whole episode left him humiliated, and he vowed to get back at Paolicelli some day. Now Paolicelli needs his help, and Guerrieri is ready to tell him he can't take the case, but then he meets Paolicelli's gorgeous half-Japanese wife Natsu Kawabata. To be fair to Guerrieri, there are also some facts about Paolicelli's case that bother him, especially Fabio's first attorney, Corrado Macri, whom Natsu was persuaded to hire by a total stranger. While trying to lay the scene for setting up reasonable doubts regarding Paolicelli's case, Guerrieri is also dwelling on the ones in his own life.

This time around there is a bit more of a mystery component than in the previous two, although there are some loose ends left by the end of the book. If this were just another novel of crime fiction, a reader might be a tad upset, but Carofiglio's energy is mainly (and wisely) directed toward character, followed by the legal system in Italy, and the ins and outs of the courtroom trial.

I totally recommend the entire series, starting with Involuntary Witness. If you were to come into the life of Guido Guerrieri having only read this book, you've really missed out on watching his character develop, and that would be a shame. Not only might you be a bit lost, but you would not have had the pleasure of watching Carofiglio's writing get better and better over time. And that would be a crime!

Terzo episodio dell'avvocato Guerrieri.
Anche questo, come i precedenti, ha riconfermato il piacere di leggere della vita e delle giornate del protagonista.
La sua Bari, l'amore per i libri con la frequentazione di librerie notturne, le passeggiate in solitaria, la focaccia appena sfornata, un buon piatto di pasta con il pane tostato e il giusto vino dopo una giornata di lavoro, e le sue cause in Tribunale.
Un nuovo amore proibito riuscirà a stemperare la delusione per la fine della sua relazione.
Un romanzo che si legge d'un fiato.

Leggermente sottotono rispetto ai due romanzi precedenti di Carofiglio ("Testimone inconsapevole" e "Ad occhi chiusi"), a causa della trama principale un po' fiacca, senza una minima sorpresa. Questa volta l'avvocato Guerrieri accetta di difendere un uomo accusato (ingiustamente? Non lo sapremo mai!) per traffico di droga e, dato che c'è, si lancia in una mezza storia con Natsu, la bella moglie dello stesso, quasi a vendicarsi, nell'inconscio, di un torto che l'accusato gli aveva fatto quando entrambi erano ragazzini. Come sempre, e diversamente dalla maggior parte dei romanzi gialli e thrilller, qui la verità non si saprà mai: Carofiglio mira a insinuare nella mente del lettore un ragionevole dubbio su ogni cosa, perchè ogni cosa, di fatto, può essere vista da angolature diverse e una verità sola, oggettiva, su cui basare le nostre azioni-punizioni, spesso risulta inafferrabile. Ma questo conta fino a un certo punto, perchè se leggerete i suoi romanzi sperando di trovarvi i classici legal thriller, thriller o gialli, beh, siete fuori pista. Quello che qui conta è l'atmosfera della Bari in cui si muove l 'avvocato Guerrieri, un grandioso personaggio, umano, naturale, e di cui ci viene offerto un ritratto a metà fra il cinico-ironico e il triste-nostalgico: vale la pena leggere il libro solo per seguire i suoi pensieri e scoprire le sue emozioni. Meravigliosi, a tal proposito, il capitolo in cui parla dei sogni con Natsu e quello in cui si reca alla libreria notturna L'Osteria del Caffellatte, un vero e proprio posto da sogno!

Letteratura d’intrattenimento. In linea con la doviziosa produzione di questo decennio. Si legge in due o tre serate. È scritto bene, seppure siamo in quel “limbo” tra letteratura e sceneggiatura che, alla fine, ti lascia poco sapore. Una trama scarna; un processo da dibattere; un presunto innocente da salvare; una coscienza lasca con cui fare conti; una bella; un momento di oblio della ragione; una spruzzata di stereotipi per insaporire. Buono per l’ombrellone.

I love this book. I listened to the audio book read beautifully by Sean Barrett. The book is written in a kind of world weary but gentle & sympathetic pathos. So much more human than the full on avenging angel Jack Reacher kind of an action story which I'm getting somewhat fed up with - For plot etc check out amazon. I'll be searching out more books from Gianrico Carofiglio.

Sada, već tradicionalno, novu godinu počinjem Karofiljom. I mogu reći da je to dobar način da se počne nova godina.

Kaarofiljo je nepretenciozan i jednostavan, ali nije isprazan i šupalj u svom pisanju. Gvido je kompleksan lik i zaista je pravo zadovoljstvo čitati ga!

Terzo capitolo della saga dell'avvocato Guerrieri. Come sempre l'intera narrazione e' percorsa da una piacevole vena ironica anche quando, come in questo caso, il racconto e' piuttosto teso e intricato. Il personaggio principale prosegue nella sua crescita con l'accumularsi di vita vissuta, problemi personali, di lavoro, di relazione. Il tono generale e' piu' sommesso rispetto ai precedenti lavori, in linea con la trama che ha molti risvolti nostalgici. Questa volta Guerrieri e' alle prese con la difesa di un suo nemico degli anni dell'adolescenza che non e' mai riuscito a dimenticare. Accetta l'incarico, combattuto tra la volonta' di rivalsa e il senso della sfida, sino al punto di mettersi contro un collega avvocato quantomeno pericoloso.

Terzo libro della serie con protagonista l'avvocato Guido Guerrieri.
Il libro è ben scritto e la lettura è piacevole.
La figura del protagonista la trovo malinconica, ma anche affascinante.
La trama è ben costruita e nonostante qualche passaggio un po' più lento, è credibile e coinvolgente.

Ricordo che al liceo mi diedero da leggere questo e un altro libro di Carofiglio, Testimone Inconsapevole.
E ricordo anche che mi rifiutai perché la lettura è libertà ed essere obbligato a leggere un libro è un cortocircuito che detesto.

Oggi Carofiglio è diventato il mio autore "defaticante", quello che leggo nel mezzo o poco dopo una lettura più "pesante". Si legge velocemente, la trama scorre e la tensione narrativa si tiene perfettamente sino alle ultime pagine.
D'altra parte, però, è il solito Carofiglio ed è il solito Guerrieri, l'avvocato tormentato dalla vita e dal lavoro, macchiato da una punta di vanitosa autocommiserazione, ma comunque capace di grandi imprese legali.

Ragionevoli i miei dubbi?
Carofiglio ha uno splendido e originale modo di scrivere e io sono un grande fan della scrittura in prima persona. I due precedenti romanzi mi hanno appassionato. In questo ho trovato alcune forzature che non rendono merito della piacevolezza della scrittura e delle citazioni (formidabili): perchè costruire un personaggio complesso ed una relazione orginale con Margherita per foi farla scomparire in tre pagine senza nessuna analisi, senza elaborazione? Per far posto ai dubbi etici di una relazione clandestina con Natsu? Molto forzato e quindi poso credibile. Per uno che ti spiega come dormisse su una sedia fuori dalla camera dei genitori è assolutamente fuori percorso. L'ho trovato un espediente letterario di basso livello che lascia l'amaro in bocca. Per il resto sempre una piacevolissima lettura.

Carofiglio's writing flows with this, his third book in the Guerrier series. He settles into Guido Guerrieri as a character. The writing, though, doesn't yet have the depth of insight and questioning, of some of Carofiglio's later books.

What this story did not need: Guerrieri's infatuation with his client's wife. It adds little to the story, is a cliche and contradicts the ethical and professional person Guerrieri strives to maintain. Guerrier has similar ruminations about another woman in the fourth book in this series. It once again causes one to wonder if a man and woman can ever be just friends, without becoming more intimate.

L'avvocato Guerrieri riceve la richiesta di Fabio Paolicelli, detenuto nel carcere di Bari, di andare a fargli visita per un possibile incarico. Il nome suscita qualcosa nei ricordi di Guerrieri, ma non riesce ad associare un volto. Poi, giunto in carcere, appena lo vede ricorda che Paolicelli, altri non è che Fabio Raybàn, lo chiamavano così per via degli occhiali da sole che portava sempre, anche di sera. Per tutti, quell'uomo era sempre stato Fabio Raybàn, quando negli anni Settanta, i telegiornali ne parlavano come di un picchiatore fascista, forse più che un semplice picchiatore. I fascisti in quel periodo erano organizzati in modo professionale, i loro argomenti politici erano le spranghe di ferro, le catene e i
coltelli quando non passavano alle pistole. Oltre a tutti questi trascorsi, Guerrieri ricorda che lui stesso da ragazzino, fu vittima della violenza di Raybàn e dei suoi compari, per questo crede nella possibilità di poter regolare un vecchissimo conto. Ma quando l'avvocato Guerrieri si accorge che Paolicelli potrebbe essere innocente almeno per il reato contestato in questa circostanza, i suoi pregiudizi e il senso di rivalsa, iniziano a cedere il passo alla sua professionalità. Oltre alla vicenda processuale, Guerrieri dovrà affrontare anche una situazione sentimentale a dir poco particolare. Dopo che Margherita è partita per New York, la sua bussola sentimentale è incerta, non è più sicuro di ciò che prova, pertanto si lascia catturare dalle situazioni che gli capitano. Non ci sono vere e proprie prove a discolpa dell'imputato, ma tanti particolare e situazioni anomale inducono chiunque a pensare nell'innocenza di Paolicelli. Il problema è convincere una corte di giustizia, senza avere riscontri oggettivi.
Procedendo in senso cronologico nella serie dell'avvocato Guerrieri, si impara a conoscere il personaggio, inizio ad anticipare alcuni suoi comportamenti, colgo battute intelligenti in uno stile narrativo che mi piace molto. Questo è forse il libro di Carofiglio che più si addentra nel labirinto interpretativo delle leggi e di come vengono usate nelle aule di tribunale. Il linguaggio resta sempre esaustivo e comprensibile anche a chiunque. Non mancano mai le riflessioni sulla vita al di fuori del contesto lavorativo:"Passati i quaranta gli stupidi pensieri si moltiplicano e fenomeni insignificanti diventano sintomi della vecchiaia che si avvicina".

Sometimes I find a writer who takes me into her (or his) world, and I want to stay there for a while. It is a kind of comfort I suppose.

This doesn't happen often: Louise Penny and the Three Pines series, Adrian McKinty and both his Michael Forsythe and Sean Duffy series; Keith McCarthy's John Eisenmenger series. I feel that way about the Guido Guerrieri series of Gianrico Carofiglio. I think it has to do with the creation of characters who seem real, and settings that seem appealing to me, romantic, but real. The rhythms of life seem possible and pleasant—not wooden, not bizarre, and not cartoonish or absurd.

I audio-read these books, in English, which enhances the experience of being transported to a different immersive world. I like that.

After my sojourn, I feel ready to tackle more demanding books, but there is something restorative about simple yarns well-spun. If you share this feeling, I recommend the Guido Guerrieri series by Gianrico Carofiglio.

“Ragionevoli dubbi” è il terzo giallo legale dedicato alla figura e alle vicende dell’avvocato Guerrieri. Come di consueto, anche stavolta Carofiglio ci regala una storia intensa, intima e dettagliata in cui emergono non solo aspetti prettamente giuridici ma anche riflessivi e malinconici. Guerrieri viene chiamato a difendere un certo Paolicelli, un uomo che, con ogni probabilità, da ragazzo aveva bullizzato il protagonista. Guerrieri fa di tutto per far uscire fuori la verità: la droga che è stata trovata sulla macchina di Paolicelli è davvero sua o lo hanno incastrato? Attraverso un’arringa convincente e per certi versi filosofica, Guerrieri farà scagionare Paolicelli convincendo la corte. Ma non è tutto. Questo processo servirà anche allo stesso protagonista, dal momento che far assolvere Paolicelli significa anche chiudere una parentesi sessuale e amorosa che si era venuta a creare con la moglie dell’imputato: Natsu. Con questa donna, seppur per pochissimo tempo, Guerrieri riuscirà ad avere quella famiglia che in fondo ha sempre desiderato.

Il libro ha un tono introspettivo. Possiamo osservare i pensieri e ricordi di Guerrieri, in
costante dialogo con se stesso. Mostra un carattere melanconico e un umorismo sardonico.
Sebbene l’autore disegna un personaggio principale con una istoria e preoccupazioni
esistenziali, profondo e complesso, non sono riuscita a empatizzare con lui. Il ritmo del libro
mi ha sembrato lento e noioso. Sono stata all’aspettativa di un evento interessante che non
ha mai successo.
