KATUMBA

Rate this book
This is the story of two countries. Where a battered dinghy brushes up against the beach in Deal, Kent. Where the collision of lives allows for promises and unimaginable choices to be made. The magic of this story is how it unfolds and how your own perception of hope and freedom comes at a price. For those whose lives have collided, it can only ever give life-affirming strength and resilience to keep going.

It is a story where love and fate run hand in hand, where hope can blossom when all else has been lost. The unravelling of the past and brilliance of the future where the truths are finally shared.

🐒Who could forget that harrowing picture of the little boy refugee who was washed up on a Syrian beach in 2019, it broke my heart when I saw it and it made me wonder how desperate him and his family must have been to try this and flee his home country, although, what would have happened if he had survived? How different would his story have been then? Katumba takes you on that journey.

🐒The setting of Adi Ada in Eritrea is rich in description that you feel like you are right there in the oppressive heat of Africa, as you read the circumstances that bring Abrihet and Amanuel to make that journey.

🐒I also enjoyed the dual POV timelines as you dip in and out of the action. It reminded me of Jane's familiar writing style in her previous book, the Girl in the Beach.

🐒An emotional rollercoaster of a book that had me gripped till the end pages and a story that will be with me for a long time to come.
