Key Ridge #1

Key Ridge

Rate this book
I thought my life was perfect.
I never saw it coming.
Now, here I am in Key Ridge, Colorado. A teeny-tiny ski resort town.
Me? I’m a Florida dweller who has never seen a single flake of snow in her life. Completely out of place would be an understatement.
But hey, a fresh start in a place where nobody knows me is exactly what I need.
The perfect plan, right?
Wrong.
Enter local resident Giles Stone—ex-professional snowboarder turned full-time professional jerk. He seems to have some kind of vendetta against me because ever since I arrived, he’s been nothing but rude and unwelcoming.
Avoiding him? Easier said than done. Unfortunately for me, he’s the part owner of the lodge I’m working at.
Sure, his brown eyes are hypnotic. So what if his jawline could cut rock?
It doesn’t matter. He’s made it crystal clear that he wants nothing to do with me.
But Key Ridge is a small town. I can’t seem to get away from him, and even worse…I’m not sure I want to.

it had its cute moments but the fmc was immature and the mmc was emotionally stunted so the conflict and story felt overall childish

Ever decide you're going to manage a lodge in the middle of a ski resort even though you have never seen snow in person?

'Key Ridge' by Allison Speka is a great read. Mattie upends her life in Florida and moves across the country to Colorado after what some could call a tragic breakup. Where she meets the grumpy ex-professional snowboarder Giles Stone, the half-owner of the Lodge she will be helping manage.

While their story is cute, it also touches on topics that are hard to come to terms with. I loved the way Giles was able to open up, you could tell it was really hard for him to do. Mattie is the person I used to be, and it was lovely to see her build boundaries. Honestly want the stories of Sharon as well as Dean (which is coming, I can't wait)

Trigger warning. Besides the first TW it's quite a light read.
- CHEATING
-friendship breakdowns
-drunk driving
-accidents

Thank you so much to Booksiren for letting me review this as an ARC reader!

I really enjoyed this book!! I went to school for hospitality and the accuracy of what it’s like to run a hotel is just chefs kiss. I loved the small town mountain vibes and the love story and friendships were just so cute! I do wish we had spent more time in Key Ridge vs Florida and the 3rd act breakup was rough, but overall this was such a good book! Wish it was 30 degrees outside and I was drinking hot cocoa

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book when I first started it. I just wanted something I could escape into for a bit. This book did exactly that. It immersed you right into the snowy mountains of Colorado, following Mattie as she picks up her life and moves to Key Ridge to help out a struggling ski lodge, right after she’s faced with life altering news that would make anyone ditch their home life for a fresh start. And then there’s Giles, closed off, attractive ex-professional snowboarder. His demeanor was grumpy as hell, but once you find out the root of the issue, you start to understand his character and admire his growth as he begins to open up and show his true self that he’s been hiding. And talk about protective 😮‍💨 I was rooting for Mattie and Giles, they seemed like the perfect pair for one another.

Although this book was a bit predictable and had a rather short third act break up, it never took away from the story. So, if you’re in the market for a fast, easy read with Hallmark type vibes, pick this one up.

note: i received an ARC copy of this book!

HOW CUTE WAS THIS!!!

i love a small town romance, so immediately this book was a yes for me...it was so cute, and cozy, and fun to read...I had a blast reading about mattie and giles (grumpyXsunshine for the win)!!!

as someone who loves colorado, i could just perfectly picture how beautiful key ridge would be...and i know why mattie would want to stay (for the mountains, snow, and sexy ex-professional snowboarders *winkwink*)...and speaking of giles, i really loved learning about him and his past (and why he was being so grumpy)...but also i felt like i really connected with mattie and her feelings of wanting to travel and adventure but getting sidetracked with real life jobs and work and mundane things

honestly, I wish this book had been longer, if only to get more cuteness between the two of them, and to get more cozy small town vibes!!! would recommend this book to anyone who loves a light-hearted, quick read

Review:

Key ridge by Allison Speka was such a cute small town romance. It was cozy and fun, sometimes serious showing us that life is not all rainbows and unicorns. The enemies to lovers was so well done, I felt like the main couple really had chemistry from the beginning. The book was incredibly well paced and it was so easy to read. I will admit at some moments the story was too fast but overall it was well paced. They were some moments in there that truly had me giggling and kicking my feet from how cute they were. The descriptions from the author were so good and made it easy to picture the moment in my head. I honestly loved this book and cannot wait to see what else the author writes.

I liked this book, it was simple and easy to start reading, especially as a holiday read. I read it in the spring but it obviously is more of a winter/Christmas holiday story. The MC was likeable, nothing really about her stood out to me. I noticed that the author described the MC as 'looking hungrily at his lips' which I did not like because that line is overused and cliche and the author used it multiple times which was a bit weird and made me want to stop reading the book.

Super cute and fast paced read! If you are looking for a fluffy, grumpy sunshine, small town romance definitely check this one out! I do feel like some parts of the book seemed a little rushed and I wanted more cutesy scenes of Mattie and Giles. But left me with those warm fuzzy feelings I look for in a contemporary romance.

4 star rating, thanks to Allison Speka for an advanced copy for my honest review.

My rating: 4.5 stars.

I LOVED this book from start to finish. Although, I hated Garrett & the back home “friends” with a passion and you’ll see exactly why when you pick up this book. Mattie deserved so much better from that situation, but I’m so glad she told him off later on. Giles, well… I had a love/hate relationship with that man and I’ll leave it at that. Their communication could’ve been better when it came to certain things… That’s for sure.

Allison is really good at writing angst and banter between her characters to where you’re either laughing or smiling to yourself while reading. Definitely laughed a good handful of times with this one.

Why the .5 instead of a full 5 stars?
**Trying to have constructive criticism & not totally nitpicking because I really liked the story**

I don’t know if it’s the fault of KU or done intentionally, but there were a couple of times where I thought there was supposed to be a “?” because the dialogue sounded like a question, but instead there was a “.”. There was also one moment after the incident when they were sitting with each other eating and it said “her blanket-clad food.” Was it supposed to say foot? Idk.. It just sounded weird to me in context.

BESIDES THAT— I would absolutely recommend checking out this book if you’re a low spice, high on the banter, mountain man, snowboarder loving girlie.

Giles & Mattie

⛷️ close proximity
❄️ grumpy sunshine
⛷️ workplace romance
❄️ small town
Spice level 🌶️ (brief, mild)

Mattie- had her world flipped upside down after being betrayed by her long time boyfriend of 8 years. When a work opportunity arises to leave her comfy predictable life in Florida for a month and head to a ski town in Colorado she takes it. Ever so optimistic she embraces this chance.

Giles- had his world flipped upside down a year prior when his parents died in an auto accident. He has since retired from being a professional snowboarder and is working at the family lodge Mattie is coming to save. He's not been on his best behavior and is always grumpy.

This story has a small town, hallmark love story vibe. I do wish some areas were a little longer. I didn't completely feel the chemistry, but I did enjoy the healing these characters got. They were both likeable enough. Even though Giles wasn't fully on board with Mattie's hospitality company coming in to help business, this definitely was not enemies to lovers.

*TW- The beginning was uncomfortable as Mattie discovers her bf is cheating on her with a supposed friend.
Several mentions of parental loss from auto accident.

New to me author found on Booksprout. This book sounded interesting so I decided to read it and it didn’t disappoint.
Mattie thought she had it all and was just hoping her boyfriend of 8 years would propose to her. Turns out he wasn’t as invested in the relationship as Mattie was. Mattie’s life gets turned upside down in just a few days. She’s moved back in with her parents and trying to deal with work. My first thought was going to key ridge herself but that took her and her boss a couple weeks to figure out.
Giles is dealing with his own heartbreak and taking it out on the new girl. He was definitely rude and a little offensive when he first met Mattie. She tried really hard to get under his skin though and make him like her.
I wish these two had figured things out a little sooner or we got more of them together or even going on a date. I don’t think these two went on an actual date at all.
He kinda went from being rude to being protective and not wanting Mattie out of his sight. I liked all the side characters though and how Mattie made the most of having to go to Colorado herself.

This book was exactly what I needed! It felt like a warm hug lol. Although it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. This small town, enemies to lovers, forced proximity romcom was so stinking cute. Allison’s writing is like butter, and is just so enjoyable. This is the second book by Allison I’ve read and her books are just so easy to fly through, and they’re impossible to put down. There were so many swoon worthy moments in this book that had me completely melting. It just does something to me when the grumpy MMC opens up to the FMC and lets her in, and Allison completely nailed it. I loved this book! My only criticism is that it felt a little rushed in a couple spots. Otherwise, it was absolute perfection. Highly recommend!!

I absolutely loved this book! The author did an amazing job of painting a picture of what Mattie was seeing scenery wise. Also, what she was doing throughout the book was also described in a way where you could tell exactly what she was doing. This book made me forget I was reading! If you are looking for a Grumpy sunshine male, love interest, then this book is for you! When Mattie first meets Giles, he wants nothing to do with her. As the story progresses, they keep getting drawn into each other. There are a few steamy scenes within this book! This book shows how two people who each have a heartbreak of their own can come together and mend each others hearts. This book wraps up in a way that will make your heart happy! This book is going on my Top 10 list for 2023!!

Thanks to BookSirens for the advance review copy; I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was such a fun book; I really enjoyed it!! I loved the grumpy vs sunshine characters, even though Miss Sunshine was getting over a difficult breakup. The Colorado scenery was vividly described and made me miss snow just a tiny bit. The supporting characters had enough depth to be purposeful and they added to the story as well.

Once I started this book, I just kept reading as I was invested and wanted to see what happened next. I enjoyed the author's style and look forward to reading more from her.

Cute story:
This was an entertaining and sweet enemies-to-lovers romance with a touch of spice. I thought Mattie and Giles made a cute couple and I was rooting for them all the way!
Even though it was told only from Mattie's point of view, I nevertheless still felt like I got to know Giles. I liked that the main side characters were a happily married couple and thought they made a wonderful group of friends. This was the first book that I've read by this author and I certainly hope that it won't be the last.

Key Ridge by Allison Speka

I received a digital copy of this book from BookSirens for review. My opinions are my own.

5/5 stars

If you love a good grumpy meets sunshine romance, this is one of the best I’ve read! I fell in love with it during the first chapter. Being from a skiing/snowboarding community, this book drew me in right away. I’ve never read a romance in this setting. Loved it.

The book stars Mattie, a Florida girl who gets her heartbroken and relocates to Key Ridge, CO, and Giles, a retired professional snowboarder. Mattie is working at the family lodge and Giles is extremely unpleasant to be around. As you can imagine, sunshiny Mattie works her magic and sparks fly…

Mattie’s work life is fantastic. Her personal life, not so much. It seems one by one all her friends are getting engaged. Her boyfriend of eight years continue to come up with excuses to wait each time she raises the subject. Mattie is tired of waiting. When she makes a devastating discovery, she decides it’s time for a fresh start.

Mattie throws herself into her new job managing a ski lodge in the small town of Key Ridge, Colorado. Adapting to the frigid climate is hard enough for Mattie, but she also needs to contend with the antagonism of her boss, former pro snowboarder Giles Stone.

The ski lodge has been in Giles family for generations. He’s not thrilled with the interloper suddenly in their midst. And he’s not thrilled to learn of the changes Mattie has in mind for the lodge. He’s slow to accept them, but as he comes to realize some of the changes aren’t so bad, he comes to feel Mattie isn’t so bad either.

If you’re looking for a great summer read, you found it. This warm hearted story is fast paced, filled with emotion and told with a touch of humor. Though set in the mountains of Colorado, this book is perfect to read at the beach of wherever your summer travels take you.

Definitely add this to your winter TBR!!

The story takes place in Key Ridge, a snowy small town. I loved the small town vibes of the story & all the side characters in it. This was also the first time I’ve liked a grumpy x sunshine trope since it wasn’t overdone & extreme! Usually, the “grumpy” part of the trope will throw me off because the mmc is so unreasonably rude all the time for no apparent reason, but this one had more depth to the “grumpy” if that makes sense— which made his character more believable.

I do wish that we got more out of the ending & epilogue. It just seemed a tad rushed to me. Overall, I really enjoyed this one! Would be perfect to read in winter!

This is a captivating read that beautifully intertwines mystery and emotion. The characters are well-developed, each bringing their own unique story to the table, which makes it easy to become invested in their journeys. The setting is vividly described, immersing the reader in the atmosphere of the story. Speka’s writing is both lyrical and engaging, making it hard to put the book down. The plot twists kept me on my toes, and the resolution was satisfying without feeling rushed. Overall, I highly recommend "Key Ridge" to anyone looking a quick read that was very enjoyable.
