Some people would kill for a fresh start.

Seattle attorney Daniel Raine is going through some tough life changes; he's getting divorced, and his law partner is leaving him to become a judge. If Raine can’t find a way to stay afloat, he'll be practicing law out of his car.

Then, the perfect opportunity - a rich socialite called Abigail Willoughby arrives at his door, wanting to divorce her even richer husband.

Raine is thrilled to take the case but gets more than he bargained for when he is forced into an unlikely alliance with high-powered realtor Rebecca Sommers who has her own motives for wanting to get close to his rich client.

What seems like a straightforward case quickly turns to chaos when Abigail threatens her husband Jeremy in front of dozens of witnesses. That same night, Jeremy is discovered murdered in their home.

All the evidence points to Abigail as the murderer. But she swears she is innocent and Raine believes her. Together with Sommers, he races to find out who really killed Jeremy and to save his client from serving a lifetime behind bars for a crime she didn’t commit.

Had not read a book by this author before, but am glad I found his work. Loved the banter between the main characters. The plot held my interest and had a nice twist at the end. I found it to move a little slow in places, and the scene where they dig through thousands of files on three different floors of a warehouse seemed a little unbelievable. But overall, a good read.

I have read many books by this author, and enjoyed most of them. This was a new series and the characters were interesting but not entirely likable. The lawyer did not project any strength until he got in the courtroom. The ending was surprising, with strong coincidental elements . It came a little too quickly for me.

I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was a little slow to get into at first, but once I got to about 40%, I just flew through it. I really loved Raine and Sommers banter throughout the book and think they worked really well together. I thought the plot was really gripping and kept me intrigued right till the very end. I honestly didn't know whether Abigail had done it or not, right up until the last chapter, and then I was shocked at who had murdered Jeremy. Overall, it was a really good read, I would recommend.

I do love a great courtroom drama. I haven't read or watched one in so long, so when I saw these books, I just had to read this series. Daniel Rain, what an attorney! He's down on his luck, his business partner has left to become a judge, he's getting a divorce and the real estate lady has just turned up at his door to say, pay up or get out.

Side bar, I love Rebecca, the real estate woman who moonlights as Daniel's business partner and PI. I can feel this is the start of a great duo.

Just as he was discussing this with her. A woman walks in. Abigail. Abigail Willoughby wants a divorce from her husband, Jeremy, but what we get is so much more!

What an entertaining, exciting Courtroom thriller!! Daniel is on a mission to prove that Abigail did not kill her husband.

I absolutely love everything to do with this. I love the researching and the day in court. I think, for me, that is my favourite bit with anything through courtroom books and films. You see how they get their information, how they fight for their client, and it's always good to see the good guys win.

It's fresh, it's exciting, and I really enjoyed it. Daniel Raine is a character. I'm fully here for him. He doesn't stop, he's very humble, and he just wants to do right by his client. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if he believes you or not, as he says, it doesn't matter, he is there to fight, but mainly he wants to be paid!! He makes no qualms about it. He's very honest about that.

I seriously did. I love this series. I'm so excited that I've got four more, I can read, because who doesn't love something that you can just get cracking on?

I'm really excited to see what happens next for Daniel. I do hope he has some wins in his life. I hope he enjoyed the camping, even though he doesn't like camping.

Just love this series already. I'm I'm hooked. I'm here for it and just can't wait to see what happens next.

I NEVER read what a book is about before reading it. I do this even with movies, I refuse to watch trailers because it spoils the movie for me - same with books. I read what this book was about moments before writing this review. I thoroughly enjoyed this book because I had NO idea that the lawyer was getting a divorce and that he would partner up with someone to solve a case. That is what made the book even more enjoyable from beginning to end. I don’t rate many books 5 stars, but I appreciated this book because the action came at a page turning point(which is great). I liked the characters, however I wish the story was told more from the lawyers perspective. This is a Good Read! 😉

A legal thriller always intrigues me. Burden Of Proof was one such book. Stephen Penner is a new author for me, so I just went in with an open mind and a mug of tea.

The first book in a new series, I was introduced to Daniel Raine, a lawyer just embarking on a solo career after his partner has left their practice to become a judge. He isn't in a great place, and then Abigail Willoughby turns up at his office wanting a divorce from her husband. Raine is quietly happy to have a case and an easy one too...he thinks!

As the story unfolds, he finds himself with a new 'partner', Rebecca Sommers. A real estate agent who turns private investigator. His easy case turns into a murder one, and instead of a divorce lawyer, he finds himself acting as a defence lawyer. But did Abigail actually kill her husband? Raine may be about to find out.

A book that took me a little bit of time to settle into. Once I had read a few chapters, I was immersed. I loved the intrigue that was threaded throughout the story. The characters, once I got used to them, were interesting to get to know. I did like Raine and Rebecca. She is so full of sass that I loved her!

What begins as a steadily paced story speeds up as the court case begins, and I was there, almost like I was sitting in the courtroom. It's definitely a twisty tale with me trying to guess the murderer. The final twist did have me surprised for sure. Yet another series I have to add to my list!
Thanks to ZooLoo's Book Tours and Stephen Penner for the ebook to write my review.

This is book 1 of the Rain City Legal Thriller series.
I love a good courtroom drama and this one didn't disapppoint.

I found the beginning was a little slow to get started but this soon picked up pace and had me racing to the end.

With an interesting back story for our main character who is fighting to keep his business afloat and deal with his soon to be ex-wife. And an unexpected partnership forming with Rebecca - the plot and character development proved very intriguing.

I loved the court room scenes and hope that in book 2, these might be explored more in depth as we spent more time building the Rain City world.

A great start to what could be a brilliant new series. Can't wait to see what the next book holds.

Burden of Proof is my first book by this author, but it won’t be my last! This book was a little slow to start, but it picked up about halfway and I read the rest in one sitting. I loved the characters and how they were well developed. I love the courtroom scenes, I just wish those were a little longer and more in depth. This was a great mystery. I didn’t see the twist coming.

This is the first Stephen Penner book I’ve read and I was surprised at his backlist. Where have I been??? I love legal thrillers that focus on the courtroom and that is exactly what Burden of Proof does. The characters spend a lot of time in the courtroom trying the case. Abigail hires attorney Dan Raine for her divorce from a high powered businessman but when the businessman ends up dead In Abigail’s house, Dan quickly changes to defending Abigail in a murder investigation. If you enjoyed legal thrillers with a taste of John Grisham, you will want to read this book. This is the first of Stephen Penner’s books I’ve read but it will not be the last!

Maybe this one star rating is affected by the fact that the last legal thriller series I have read was Michael Stagg’s “ Nate Shepherd” and that I am drawing comparisons.

Raine is weak, and unimpressive, and on the other hand all the other characters are exaggerated, to an almost comical extent, the anti defense judge, the extremely docile and fair and accepting prosecutor, the real estate agent turned investigator.

The story wasn’t strong, or interesting, picking the book back was a chore.

I would appreciate any recommendations for strong legal drama/thriller series.

the price of privilege

Struggling lawyer encounters wealthy desperate client & egotistical relator. Several parts of the plot seemed preposterous. The time sequence seemed compressed. I kept reading to the end to see how the lawyer discovered the criminal.

If Only

I actually would have liked to give this novel another star for it's rating, because most of this material is really a fun read. However, there is a fair amount of redundancy where I had to look past descriptive paragraphs and then full pages, like some of the description and testimony during the court proceedings. Maybe one more edit draft away from happiness? I will look forward to Mr. Penner's next (slightly pared down) installment of action from & Raine Attorney At Law.

I received a free digital copy of “ Burden of Proof” by Stephen Penner via Net Galley in return for an honest review. My thanks to Net Galley , Mr. Penner and the publisher, Inkubator Books for the chance to enjoy this novel.
I have always enjoyed a good courtroom drama- who doesn’t ?- so after finishing a rather heavy non- fiction book, I needed some fun. “Burden of Proof” provided just that. It had been on a Kindle a while but when I opened it, it stayed open until I finished it.
The hero, lawyer J. Daniel Raine, is having a bad day the court presided over by his former law partner. His client has just been found not guilty of one count and guilty a lesser one. Worse, the ungrateful client snarls that he does not intend to pay up on the remaining amount owing. Things get worse, when his wife and her lawyer show up in his office with final divorce papers. Topping things off, a glam realtor , best in Seattle Rebecca Sommers, finishes off the very bad day, by coming in the door with an inquiry of Raine if the office space will soon be vacated, since without his ex- partner to bring in fees, Raine is struggling to meet the rent.
Finally a bit of lightning strikes- a client- one with a desire to divorce her husband . Abigail Willoughby’s husband is a mega- rich tech entrepreneur. A big settlement and a big fee looms on the horizon’ , for J. Daniel Raine. Things are looking up until a oh one call awakens Raine that night. Abigale has been arrested for the brutal murder of her husband.
There is a lot to like about this book.it is not a heavy opus, not heavily serious, but with just enough tension to make a good story move right along. The hero is an average guy facing a case where all the evidence is against his client. The presiding judge is an ex- prosecutor who hates ambulance chasers like Raine. Willoughby comes across as a gold- digger. And, as a single Practitioner, the hero has neither the time nor the money to hire a private investigator.
But there is some some hope when the real estate agent decides to dabble as a private eye and help out. The verbal jousting and interaction ( not sexual) between Rebecca and J . Daniel is fun to read.
The pages flew by and I was engrossed in the story and loved the characters. The climactic finish was expertly set up in a tense court room drama that made me put down the author’s name on my to read list.
Summary: recommended to any who like a good courtroom drama, a good clean mystery with characters you can relate to.

There wasn’t any mention in the synopsis of this book being part of a series but it seems to be. I have not read this author previously. The legal drama is set in Seattle with the homeless situation deftly worked into the descriptions of the area. It was interesting and fairly easy to follow, with no lengthy legalese to muddle through.
Attorney Daniel Raine is beginning a new chapter without his wife, his former law partner and financial stability. His first client through the door is a rather frantic woman in pursuit of a divorce. She’s married to a very well known tech mogul worth mega bucks. Ah, but there’s a prenup, then an already complicated case turns into murder.
By happenstance Dan forms an unlikely alliance with a whip smart, sassy, successful real estate agent for the elite, wealthy and powerful. Rebecca Sommers sort of cons the client into believing she’s Dan’s investigator/private-eye. It was a unique partnership and I enjoyed their interaction.
The mystery of who the murderer was kept me guessing. I always learn new laws, procedures and protocol distinct to the plot location. The only minor objection was that the murder trial seemed unrealistically short, no depositions, the opening statements were almost longer than the evidence. In a legal thriller I expected more focus on the legal issues. Just my personal preference but, I read legal mysteries to learn about the legal system. I really did like the story and if there are more to come I would read them.
Thanks to NetGalley for the digital advance reader copy of “Burden of Proof” by Stephen Penner, Published by Inkubator Books. These are all my own honest personal thoughts and opinions given voluntarily without compensation.

Daniel Raine, a Seattle attorney, is getting a divorce and losing his law firm partner to the bench as a judge. When he comes back, he is nearly officeless. He walks in on Rebecca Sommers, a high-powered realtor who’s looking at buying up his premises.

Then, almost like his saviour, Abigail Willoughby walks into his office asking for a divorce attorney. Rebecca Sommers recognises the surname at once, as he owns half of downtown Seattle. Abigail hires Daniel on the proviso that Rebecca is the investigator.

Daniel and Abigail are in court to gain access to her husband's personal and business accounts rather than just the prenup but unfortunately the judge rules in her husband's favour. Abigail threatens to kill her husband with loads of witnesses.

Later that day, Daniel decides to drive to Abigail's home to see if he can catch her as he hasn’t managed to catch her all afternoon. When he gets to hers, there is no answer to the intercom but as the gate is open he decides to check further. He goes to the side entrance door which he notices is open. He knocks, the door opens further and he enters for a quick look round. In the parlour, he finds a foot in a gold buckled shoe which belongs to Abigail's husband, Jeremy. Daniel rings the police after leaving the house and then keeps an eye on it to make sure no one else enters before the police do.

Did Abigail kill her husband? Was it someone else who killed her husband?

This was an intriguing read and it was interesting as it's the first time I have read a book set in Seattle. It made a change to read an attorney led book. I like the cover of the book, the scales of justice being very appropriate in this case. I would read more books from this author.

**Not bad, but sorta lacking**

Perhaps it's because I'm so used to Penner's work with the Brunelle series, which I ended up loving after a while, or the meh-ness of THIS book's premise itself, or even the fact that this is the mere first of the series. But either way, this book sorta fell flat for me. It had a promising start and seemed to suggest it'd be full of high stakes lawyerly and courtroom antics, but it ended up just being pretty standard.

However, I DID enjoy getting to know folks. Raine himself, though not as "colorful" in personality as the David Brunelle I know and love, still had a certain charm to him that I sense will grow on me if I choose to continue. I adored Sommers, though, his unintended "partner" during the entire case. Their banter was entertaining, and I hope to see more of that in the future. Pretty much all characters and interactions were the shining points in this entry.

What I couldn't get into was the momentum of the case and plot itself. While intriguing at the start, all the moving parts to get the story moving often didn't really excite me. It was more or less a tame lawyer tale. I suppose to be fair, I prefer more thrills to my lawyer stories, something to keep me guessing or salivating for more. And while this entry did manage to keep my attention, it simply didn't shine as brightly as I'd like.

Overall, though, I had a decent enough time and appreciated the quickness of the read and the obvious introduction to Raine as a character and his life circumstances, which I feel is DEFINITELY an improvement by Penner when compared to how minimal Brunelle's life was in THAT series. I am still curious to continue this series, but I'm hoping it will pick up the pace a little bit.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Inkubator Books for and advance copy of Burden of Proof, the first novel in a new series, Rain City Legal Thrillers, set in Seattle, to feature attorney Daniel Raine.

Abigail Willoughby hires Daniel Raine in her divorce from her extremely rich husband, Jeremy. Raine is struggling, but he doesn’t baulk when divorce becomes murder. Jeremy is murdered in Abigail’s home the same day she threatened him after a court hearing didn’t go her way. In an unlikely alliance with realtor Rebecca Sommers, who has her own reasons for getting close to Abigail, they race to clear Abigail.

I liked the synopsis for Burden of Proof, even though I don’t often read legal thrillers, so I was interested in seeing how it would turn out. Sadly, I didn’t find it engrossing and struggled to keep going. I’m glad I did as the best bits of the novel come in the courtroom scenes towards the end of the novel, where Raine suffers the highs and lows of witness testimony with some wins but more losses in terms of proving Abigail innocent. There is a massive twist at the end of the trial that I certainly didn’t see coming and can only praise the author for his misdirection and sense of timing.

The best character in the novel is Rebecca Sommers. She is sassy, confident and obviously smart and brings a bit of life to a mostly colourless narrative. Daniel Raine does not present as a confident, capable lawyer, but rather as a man burdened by financial issues and a recent divorce he didn’t want. This impression changes as he builds his case in court, but it’s a long time coming.

Burden of Proof is a solid read.

This is a solid steady-paced read for about two thirds of the book and then once the trial itself is underway, it really gathers momentum.

Daniel Raine is hired initially by Abigail Willoughby to represent her in divorce proceedings against her husband who doesn't take kindly to being served. After an argument outside the courtroom where Abigail threatens her husband who is subsequently found murdered in her home, it's no surprise when she is charged with his murder. Daniel then ends up being her defense lawyer.

Abigail comes across as quite shallow and Daniel himself for a lot of the book appears to be a nondescript type of guy with no real confidence. This changes as the book goes on and especially when the trial actually begins. The best character of all is Rebecca Sommers, a real estate agent who somehow ends up partnering Daniel as his so-called private investigator. She's a total opposite to Daniel, confident and sassy. Between them, they end up making quite a good team and I enjoyed the back and forth between them.

There are a few characters throughout which seem to be possible alternative suspects for the crime but I was never sure which it was. I definitely didn't see the twist coming at the end. I probably would have preferred a bit more of the trial in the book but it was still very enjoyable and I would definitely read more in this series.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Burden of Proof

4/5⭐️

This story revolves around Daniel Raine, a dedicated lawyer representing Abigail Willoughby in her divorce proceedings. Their lives take a turn when Abigail's estranged husband is found dead, and Abigail becomes the prime suspect. Now, Daniel finds himself embroiled in a race against time, fighting to prove Abigail's innocence and unveil the true culprit behind her husband's murder.

This compelling legal thriller combines courtroom drama with an intricate murder mystery. With its well-written characters, clever plot twists, and expertly crafted suspense, you will have difficulty putting this book down. An engaging and immersive reading experience that anyone will enjoy.

The courtroom scenes are meticulously detailed and realistic, capturing legal proceedings' tension, strategies, and complexities. In addition, the author effectively explains legal concepts without overwhelming the reader, making the legal aspects of the story accessible and engaging. This is one of the best legal thrillers that I have read.

You will feel this story just as much as you will read it. The author’s history with the criminal justice system shines through this book.

I recommend it to anyone who likes legal thrillers. You will not be disappointed that you picked this book up.

Raine has just been hired for a lucrative divorce which then turns into a murder trial. Has Abigail's husband has been found murdered in her home he is a multi-billionaire for a tech company and she is a number one suspect. After Jeremy's murder we are in just two more characters whom he knew such as his son and people who work for him.
Raine is a lawyer who is now working alone after his former law partner was appointed to the bench as a judge. When he arrives, he finds Sommers at his office, attempting to sell the land. When a woman asks Raine to handle her case in order to petition for divorce from her husband, he finds himself with a job that will help pay the bills and keep him afloat, as well as a "new partner."
Unfortunately, I didn't find it interesting and struggled to keep reading. I'm happy I did because the best parts of the novel are in the courtroom scenes near the conclusion, where Raine experiences the highs and lows of witness testimony, with some victories but more losses in terms of demonstrating Abigail's innocence. At the end of the trial, there is a big twist that I did not see coming and can only admire the author for his deception and sense of timing.
The pacing seemed a little slow at times but I understood this was for the story element.

Burden of Proof📚

Burden of Proof is the first book in a new series by this author. He’s a new to me author and I’ve recently started enjoying some legal thrillers again and thought I’d give it a go.

Raine is a lawyer and is now practicing alone as his old law partner has transitioned to the bench as a judge. He discovers Sommers in his office, when he arrives, in the process of trying to sell the property. When a woman comes in asking for him to take her case to petition for divorce from her husband, Raine finds himself with a job that could help pay the bills and keep him afloat and also a “new partner”.

Unfortunately, the case he’s taken on takes a dramatic twist when he discovers the husband of his client, dead, and in her home😳 Abigail proclaims her innocence but the prosecution is gung ho on charging her.

A steady paced story that took me some time to immerse myself in, purely due to my unfamiliarity with this author but I expect any other books I read of his, will eliminate this issue. I definitely would like to see what happens next in Rain City😁

I received an advanced copy via Netgalley and voluntarily leave my honest review❣️

Burden of Proof - The best book so far written by the author. The two main characters are a perfect mix of partnership and friendship. Their dialog, their ability to work together and communicate make this a hard book to put down. Facing odds, the unlikely duo set out to prove a client's innocence while defending her in court. There's a misdirect that may or may not be the killer. Interesting story lines. Entertaining with humor and good drama. 4*

David Brunelle Legal Series:
Presumption of Innocence, #1 - While this book did not start out well, the story did get better. Chen is a terrible character, he did not improve from First Offense. The most of the other characters are interesting with good personalities. There is humor, flirtations and romance. There is too much vulgar language but the violence and sex are not graphic. Good courtroom drama, believable. 4*

First Offense - I find both lawyers a bit hard to swallow. She's peeved at the murder charge and he thinks the absence of a suicide note and the location of the bullet's location is murder. His dialog is more immature, childish than a professional. A waste of time. 2*
David Brunelle Legal Series end.

Okay I’m not gonna lie, I went into this book not expecting much and wow was I wrong!

While I felt the beginning was a bit clunky, that quickly disappeared. Stephen does a fabulous job of describing courtroom drama in such a succinct manner. He was able to write about the same conversation (attorney asking for introductory information from each new witness) without making me want to skip that part. He also does a great job of describing legal jargon without making the reader feel stupid. He knows what his readers expect to ask and answers it without being obvious about it.

This book got me so hooked that I literally gasped out loud and scared my husband when I read the twist. The writing drew me in so HARD that I could picture the final scenes in my heard like a movie that I’m left feeling like I actually watched.

Come to find out, the author actually practiced criminal law for nearly 30 years! Please to be able to read something that I can trust (no or minimal CSI Effect), makes me feel smart, and is fun to read!

First book by Stephen Penner. Starts off slow, but the tempo picks up. Initially, the Raine's character is pretty weak, and I thought it could have been stronger. The story takes a dramatic turn when Raine is approached by Abigail Willoughby, a wealthy socialite seeking a divorce from her equally affluent husband, Jeremy. However, what begins as a straightforward divorce case spirals into chaos when Jeremy is found murdered, and all evidence points to Abigail as the prime suspect. The relationship between Raine and Rebecca Sommers, a high-powered realtor who becomes an unexpected ally, is one of the book's highlights. She comes across as sauve and sharp.
The tension builds effectively as Raine navigates legal obstacles and uncovers layers of intrigue surrounding Abigail's case. The courtroom scenes are particularly well-crafted, capturing the intricacies of legal proceedings without overwhelming readers with jargon.
Some parts of the story seemed unrealistic. Still a good read, and hopes that future books from the author are as promising.

Fast-paced and entertaining. I enjoyed it . . . actually, more than I had anticipated.

I am a retired criminal trial lawyer and I'm not prone to reading a lot of criminal legal thriller books. . . . They are too close to "home" and they make me feel that I'm back at work (not where I want to be).

I do like to pick one up every once in a while. This author has a considerable body of work and I had read good reviews. I started with the first of the "Rain City" books and liked what I read. . . So much is dependent on the main character and David Raine is likeable, fallible and like many trial lawyers that I knew and worked with. . . Good plot, quirky characters . . . with the usual prosecutor and judge "types" but a nice criminal "who done it?" . . . but it wasn't my client . . . book!

Give it a shot.

Burden of Proof by Stephen Penner took me on a journey into a high-stakes world where money usually talks. This is the first book I've read by this author, and it will not be the last.

I really enjoyed the relationship and banter between Daniel Raine and Rebecca Sommers. Rebecca is a fun character to read. I like a good courtroom drama with a genuine portrayal of the justice system, and this book did not disappoint.

I hope a new book with these characters is released soon. I liked this new Rain City Legal Thriller, and I enjoyed this author's writing style. It was crisp, to the point, and flowed nicely without any extra "fluff" to pull me away from the storyline and action.

I would recommend this book and this author.

"Burden of Proof" by Stephen Penner

My Perception:

The professional duo we didn't know we needed!

I picked this up earlier today, just to have a bit of a read with my cup of tea. Fast forward several hours and I'm in exactly the same spot, jobs list completely untouched, mild sunburn and full on gutted that I wasn't smart enough to pick up the full series.
Entertaining, informative and very very addictive. This dynamic duo are exactly that. They are brilliant in their own rights but together, an absolute tornado. I like the fact there were enough players in the mix to keep you guessing but there weren't any "filler" characters, you know, purely there to up the word count.
Thoroughly engaging, well written and i loved the plot. I cannot wait for the sequel to arrive!

I love legal thrillers, and Burden of Proof reminded me exactly why! This book had me hooked from the start with its gripping courtroom drama and intense murder mystery. Daniel Raine is a great lead—smart, determined, and easy to root for as he fights to prove his client’s innocence. The twists kept me guessing, and the suspense built up perfectly until the big reveal.
The mix of legal strategy and real danger made this an exciting read. I also really enjoyed the dynamic between Raine and Rebecca Sommers—it added another layer of intrigue. The pacing was perfect, and once I finished, I immediately wanted to read the next book in the series.
If you love legal thrillers with smart storytelling and plenty of suspense, this one is a must-read. I highly recommend it!
