She’s fallen in love with an antique bed. But the ghostly Highlander it comes with is more than she bargained for…
All-business American Mara McDougall thinks there are no such things as ghosts. But a trip to Scotland and one gorgeous phantom are about to prove her dead wrong.
A self-employed tour guide, Mara is weary from leading her charges all over London. So she takes a breather in an antique shop, and spots perhaps the handsomest bed ever. Then she bumps into the handsomest man ever. He has a sexy Scottish burr, a heated gaze, and a chip on his brawny shoulder. Despite a bad start, Mara can’t deny her attraction to the irresistible Highlander. Then she discovers she’s inherited a Scottish castle, and the stipulations she must meet in order to claim her unexpected windfall will help her banish the hot Scot from her mind, or so she hopes.
As a ghost, Sir Alexander Douglas has reviled the name MacDougall for ages. Once a medieval knight betrothed to a lass he’d yet to meet, he fell victim to her beau, a MacDougall, who tricked him into a curse that he would forever haunt the bed intended for his would-be bride. Now Alexander will stop at nothing to keep the magnificent four-poster out of MacDougall – or McDougall – hands. But when Mara buys the bed for her castle, he reckons she’s nothing like his enemy. After all, no other MacDougall ever made him burn with passion and long for the one thing he never knew he love.
Sue-Ellen MacDuffie was born and raided in Florida. She is a card-carrying Scotophile whose burning wish to make frequent (free) trips to the land of her dreams led her to a twenty year career with the airlines. Bi-lingual, she flew international all those years, working her flights as foreign language speaker. Her flying career allowed her to see the world, but it was always to Scotland that she returned.
Now a full-time writer, she’s quick to admit that she much prefers wielding a pen to pushing tea and coffee. She spent fifteen years living in Europe and used that time to explore as many castle ruins, medieval abbeys, and stone circles as possible. Anything ancient, crumbling, or lichened caught her eye. She makes annual visits to Scotland, insisting they are a necessity as each trip gives her inspiration for new books.
Proud of her own Hebridean ancestry, she belongs to two clan societies: the MacFie Clan Society and the Clan MacAlpine Society. In addition to Scotland, her greatest passions are medieval history, the paranormal, and dogs. She never watches television, loves haggis, and writes at a four-hundred-and-fifty year old desk that once stood in a Bavarian castle.
Sue-Ellen is married and currently resides with her husband and Jack Russell Terrier in Florida. Readers can learn more about her and the world of her books at: www.welfonder.com.
When tour guide, Mara McDougall is enchanted with an elaborately carved bed at the antique shop, she dreams of owning it one day. Her blissful day of shopping is stopped when she receives a rather rude comment from a dashing, mysterious man. Their tempers flare as romantic sparks fly, surprising her when he disappears into thin air. Was their spirited encounter real, or a figment of her imagination?
When Mara receives a generous bequest and becomes mistress of a McDougall clan castle, her life takes a dramatic turn. She brings the enchanted bed from the antique store into her new home. Will the Highlander stranger from a rival clan make a ghostly return? The castle bequest has a clause which means she could lose everything--will her new life and dreams vanish? Or will she receive a spiritual, helping hand?
Author Welfonder pens a romantic romp that will keep you entertained. This is a fun, spirited read, perfect for a summer holiday, or just when you need a sizzling escape. Highly recommended for Highlander romance fans!
3.75 stars.... Way too much going on with this plot line though it has real potential. Mara and Alex were interesting characters but both needed more fleshing out and their relationship needed more depth.
Going to give more in the series another chance (though I'll be kinking to the original Allie MacKay series ) before I make a full decision about the whole series.

West Highlands, near Oban, the year of our lord 1312....
In this story....Sir Alexander Douglas, one of The King's most trusted and honorable knights goes to claim his wife Lady Isobel MacDougall even bringing the biggest most beautiful hand carved four poster bed as a bridal gift. This union was to end the feuding his beloved King Robert Bruce believed. Yet he and his entire clan are met and cut down with treachery by the evil MacDougall's ,where his treacherous evil wife is the mastermind. Yet the MacDougall's send a curse upon him with this magical pin to protect themselves from King Roberts's wrath to protect the MacDougall Clan and honor.
This pin is called the Bloodstone of Dalriada, a sacred pin passed down from the first King of Scotland Kenneth MacAlpin and stolen from King Robert the Bruce's cloak in a struggle at Dalrigh. It is a possession of The MacDougall's. They had it all planned out to say Honorable Alexander had stolen it and make it look as Alexander had shamed his bride. Collin explains the pin is magical containing the blood of a saint or even fey magic and can grant three wishes between a year and a day according to the fairy folk. It's obvious Collin does not believe in the power of the pin and is only attempting to infuriate Alex. Except Alexander damned himself, wishing himself and Colin MacDougall in hell first. His next wish was in anger and you will rue the hour you laid eyes on my bed! I shall haunt you and your issue until the end of all days! After that Alexander sadly was murdered.
Present day 2014 England and Scotland....
The heroine of this story is beautiful tour guide Mara MacDougall from the States of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She enters an antique shop and hears the words bluidy MacDougall bastards admiring an antique hand carved four poster bed! As she turns around she literally bumps into the most handsome man she has ever seen! One six foot-four with the most gorgeous sea green eyes with the sexiest Scottish brogue, but also extremely rude with a definite chip on his shoulder when it came to the MacDougall's. Mara was admiring this beautiful antique bed and she apologizes for bumping into him he says the bed is mine wench, begone!
Mara who was on her last day in England knew she couldn't afford this enormous bed nor her small place in Philadelphia she wouldn't even be able to fit through the door. Also why was this man talking as he was from another time thinking he is just another person who dislikes Americans. Not realizing she is talking to a seven hundred year old ghost! Especially since she is the last person who believes in the paranormal as she has been taking around a bunch of ghost hunting clients all around old English castle with some seance's too and not one single apparition found-not that she believes in it. Then she gets a call and finds out one of her eccentric clients has passed away and left her Ravenscraig Castle with some stipulations that she accepted anything to stay on UK soil.
Of course Alexander who has been guarding the bed all these years is not too thrilled he has to go to his enemies now. As this castle was to be part of his bride price long ago. So his temper is really in a tangle you might say, even worse than it had been. Now the fun begins and I will leave the rest for the reader to find out how these two can finally put their differences and prejudices aside to come together and big differences at that considering one is a mortal and the other a ghost. Yet the chemistry between them is immediate as you feel it through each written word. One who doesn't believe in ghosts and the other hates everything MacDougall!
I am a big believer in second chances but for Mara and Alex there are many obstacles in the way. Will they get that second chance of happiness or are they doomed to a lifetime or in Alexander's case an eternity of misery? You really must read this magnificent book to find out,
This is the second time for me reading this spectacular Scottish paranormal romance in Highlander in Her Bed by the multi talented Sue-Ellen Welfonder/ Allie MacKay Which is book one of The Ravenscraig Legacy Series. You can read this outstanding book alone or in series order. It was even better the second time around as I absolutely love love loved this book! It really was really such a joy to read and even the cast of her eccentric staff at Ravenscraig Castle was absolutely hilarious! The one legged gardener, ghost hunting cook, and of course there are several four legged furry dogs that will melt your heart with hilarity at some of their shenanigans. Mara's Philadelphia Scottish American father was so sweet, endearing and humorous to read about, as he is Scottish obsessed and very proud of his Scottish roots which I also loved.
Well the male hero is a hot Scot, green eyed sexy, muscle bound, six foot-four, sword wielding , kilt wearing honorable knight who can play the bagpipes quite beautifully. This man has the sexiest brogue that would melt any lassie's heart.and the backdrop of the story is bonnie Scotland. Have I got your attention yet? Guaranteed you won't be able to put this one down! I read it in a day, yes it is that fabulous! This book has all the elements that make reading books like Highlander In Her Bed such a pleasure and delight to read. I laughed, I cried, sighed and tingled. Spectacular and imaginative! Another beautifully written breathtaking, knock your socks or kilt off magical read! Loved it.
Disclaimer: I received an advance copy from Oliver-Heber publishing and Booksprout. I voluntarily agreed to do an honest, fair review and blog. All thoughts, ideas and words are my own.
The villainous deeds in the prologue sets the stage near Oban for the events that will follow 700 years later. Headed by Colin MacDougall, his clan ambushed Sir Alexander Douglas and his men as they made their way through a MacDougall ravine. Dishonoring the truce made between the two clans, Colin further dishonored Alex by claiming that Alex stole a sacred relic known as the Bloodstone of Dalriada - touched by the fae and granting the bearer 3 wishes. Alex promised to haunt the MacDougall’s and that none of their issue would sleep in his wedding bed. Exactly how many wishes did Alex make before he was murdered?
Fast forward to present day when Mara McDougall finds herself in a London antiques shop admiring an old, beautifully carved four poster bed (the same bed that Alex was bringing to his betrothed before the ambush). Not even wanting her admiration of the bed, Alex materializes and tells Mara to “Begone”, after she suggests that she may buy the bed - just to irritate this arrogant, handsome, unknown man. Before she could argue further, Alex left. This was the last day of her tour escorting ghost hunters, before she went back home to Philadelphia. Prior to her departure, Mara was contacted by a London solicitor informing her that Lady Fiona Warfield bequeathed her Ravenscraig Castle, the ancestral home of the MacDougall clan - Lady Fiona was a MacDougall. Imagine Alex’s rage after learning that a MacDougall not only inherited his land and castle, but purchases and sleeps in HIS bed. That does it! He is on a haunting mission!
Mara has her own issues - she doesn’t believe in ghosts. What will it take for her to believe that Alex is a ghost and his history and identity has been maligned by her clan? How will Alex overcome his rage and physically be with the woman he comes to love? Something tells us that it will involve more than a seance - maybe a little fae magic? This is a well written humorous romance. The author entertains us with Alex’s antics, his ghostly friends’ appearances, his mannerisms and colloquialisms that make readers wistfully reminisce about a time long ago when knights existed and honor and valor dictated their actions. Sue-Ellen Welfonder, thou hast been awarded lots and lots of stars! Dinnae fash, lassie. I have received an ARC from Booksprout and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
I actually read this book when it was released in 2014. I forgot that I had read it, but as I got into the story this time, it started to come back to me. I had no idea how it would end, my memory isn't that good, and I can't be sure that changes haven't been made. I can be sure that I rated it 5 stars back in 2014 and I am rating it exactly the same now in 2023.
I loved Alex and Mara's story, it might have been pure fantasy, but what a great fantasy it was. Imagine buying a bed and finding that a gorgeous Highlander comes with it. I laughed out loud at some of the antics Alex got up to in his bid to make Mara give up the bed. I enjoy a book that can make me laugh, but that can also make me run the whole gamut of emotions as this book did. I couldn't see how Alex and Mara could have a happy ending, and I love the way that they did!
One of the funnier characters in the book is a friend of Alex's, another ghost, who has been cursed with a particular affliction. I won't give spoilers, suffice it to say I really hope that he will have his own story written. He deserves a happy ending too!
I love Scottish tales of distant family feuds. Mara McDougall, a native of Pittsburgh, PA inherits a Scottish castle with the stipulation that she bring as much of the Clan MacDougall together. Mara is giving a tour in London when she has some free time and goes to visit an antiques shoppe and discovers a beautiful Medieval Scottish bed. The bed comes with its very own ghost, Sir Alexander Douglas who has cursed the MacDougall name for centuries. When Mara inherits the castle, she also buys the bed, and subsequently the ghost. Alex tries many tricks to get Mara to leave his bed and Scotland, but to no avail. The more he sees Mara’s strength in resistance, the more he falls in love with her. Mara has fallen in love with her Hot Scot almost from the very beginning, but how these two spend their happily ever after remains for you to find out. Wonderful storytelling with a “don’t want to put this book down” atmosphere.
Mara and Alex's story in Highlander in Her Bed unfolds within rich and heartfelt descriptions of Scotland. The author's beautifully chosen words brought me back to times when I visited there and fell in love with the country. The book is filled with elements of fantasy (he is a ghost, after all). There were a few moments when I could hear my old high school teacher saying "Suspend your disbelief!" when my logical self would ask "Wait, should that be able to happen?" From start to finish this story is a true joy and a well-needed break from the stresses of real life. My advice to readers is to buy the book, suspend your disbelief, and enjoy!.

I DNF’d at 41%, because there was so much unnecessary inner dialogue from Mara and the ghostly knight’s attraction to each other, I got bored. Mara also just didn’t seam like a modern woman. She was almost Victorian in her manner, but occasionally more modern ideas or vernacular would pop out. It really was strange how it was written, and the overall plot concept just didn’t flow or evolve enough to capture this reader’s attention. I gave it 3 stars, because this style of writing and the overall plot may intrigue other readers, but it’s not my cup of tea.
Interesting enemies to friends highlander romance, clears history. Can't imagine being in his situation but glad there was a way for him to move on with the very clan he'd resented for so many years. She definitely flourishes in Scotland. Both strong and strong-willed and their paranormal experience was an exciting and adventurous journey to choose love over history which sometimes depends on whose telling it. Another sexy, sassy Scottish read from the Queen of sexy, sassy Scottish reads. I loved this latest book - Mara is brilliant and she and her sexy Highlander are a fabulous match for each other. I particularly loved the time slip elements of this one - as Mara is from the present whereas her enemy/lover is a ghost.
The story of how they deal with each other, and how they slowly move from disbelief and dislike to passionate romance is very well conveyed and, as always, the Scottish descriptions are wonderful. A book to enjoy and a romance to savour!
Yes, Hottie Scottie, indeed. The laird was exactly that and more. Take one woman in the current time and mix in one castle in Scotland, bequeathed to her, add in a few ghosts, and the mix for this story begins. Not just any ghosts, tough. Unless you call medieval knights in armor, swords, and jewel encrusred daggers. First, you must believe in ghosts, and then the touching and fun hijinks begin. Five stars.
The characters were beautifully developed with a historically deft hand. I lived now the romance began & became closer, even with the warriors tossed in front of them! Take a deep breath, a cup of strong well breed tea, settle into your favorite comfy chair and enjoy the escape! I want to travel to Scotland just to well through the village Mara created in the book!
The first book in the Ravenscraig Legacy series. American Mara McDougall and Highlander ghost, Sir Alexander Douglas' story. The story has a great storyline that flows smoothly across the pages. I enjoyed seeing them get a happy ending. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book is for all those people looking for a story of gallant Knights, ghost, true love and second chances. I hope that there will be more like this story in the future. I just wish that this book would have been at least 30 chapters instead of the 15, because I loved the whole story so much.
This is a must read! The story grabs you and pulls you in from page 1. It'll make you want to go into an antique store and find your own Scottish Highlander attached to a beautiful bed. It definitely makes me want to visit Scotland and maybe find my own Highlander? Quirky, funny and a good read. On to the next book in the series!
I thoroughly enjoyed this one! I traveled to Oban several years ago with a bus tour of Scotland with members of Clan Irwin to which I belong. We had lots of stops along the way, also at Drum Castle. We met with David Irvine and his Lady Caroline. Your descriptions of the area brought back so many memories! Thankyou!!
First book I have read by this author, but definitely not the last. The author has a knack for giving you enough description to make the story come to life, but not so much it bogs down. Loved her characters and the premise of the story. Just what I was looking for to read, something humorous but quick.
The story has an original and promising theme, but unfortunately I didn't think it lived up to its promise. The writing style is varied, can be entertaining and comical, but also long-winded and too descriptive. I find the plot a bit disappointing. After being ambushed by the MacDougall clan, Alex has lived on as a ghost for hundreds of years until he meets Mara McDougall, American descendant of the hated clan, and new heir to the castle that should have been his. Alex and Mara fall in love, which of course causes some problems. I would have liked to know more about how the treacherous clan has fared, whether they have been bothered by Alex the ghost over the years. Alex's protective stance on his bed is funny, as well as the ghost friends who appear every now and then.

I loved this book I read it straight thru , without putting it down. I love time travel books. Thank you so much . I'm 88 year's old so reading is pretty much all I do .
Really enjoyed this book. I haven't read a book that didn't have aliens in a long time. So this was a nice change. I liked the idea of the "time" being fluid. No specific time character were in. Makes it easier to imagine me being there.
I had a very hard time putting this book down to accomplish anything else. It flows and rides like a roller coaster. You don't want to stop. These authors work well together, producing a funny and exciting story. I recommend this book and will read others.
I loved this book and couldn't put it down! The descriptions of the castle and landscapes made me feel as if I was there! Please tell me that there are more books coming! I can't wait for Brand's and Harwin's stories!
This was a good book. It had a little too much sex in it for me but I am sure others enjoyed that part. I speed read that part. We have Douglas in our family tree so I am sure they would enjoy it.
This story was from a fresh perspective, very different from any of the many books I've read on highland historic fantasy. Definitely an enjoyable read. I'll be looking for more from this author.
I haven’t read a Highlander book in a while and this hit the spot. The storytelling is beautiful with enough detail to transport you to Scotland, but not so much as to wear you out. Strong characters and great humor and spice.
Wonderful fantasy story. I totally enjoyed this book. The mystery surrounding the highlands was beautifully described. I could see the beauty in my minds eye very well from the authors description.
