Bertie's family complains when he farts at the dentist's office, the museum, in the cafe, and in the playhouse, but he knows that they can be equally as stinky even though they try to hide their farts.

David Roberts was born in Liverpool. He always loved drawing from an early age and couldn’t wait to escape high school and go to art college. There he developed a keen interest in pottery and fashion and went on to study a degree in fashion design at Manchester Metropolitan University. After university he worked as a milliner and began to get work as a fashion illustrator but always felt his true calling was in children’s book illustration.
He signed up with Christine Isteed at Artist Partners in 1995 and has never looked back since. So after working as a shelf stacker, egg fryer, hair washer, film extra and coffee-maker David finally realised his dream of becoming a children’s book illustrator when his first book ‘Frankie Stein’s Robot’ written by Roy Apps was published in 1998. This book was shortlisted for the 'Mother Goose Award' for emerging illustrators.
Since then he has illustrated works by some fantastic authors such as Philip Ardagh, Daren King, Julia Donaldson, Jacqueline Wilson, Tom Baker and Chris Priestley. David considers himself privileged and lucky to be doing a job he loves. His most recent works include ‘Iggy Peck, Architect’ by Andrea Beaty, ‘The Troll’ by Julia Donaldson and ‘The Dunderheads’ by Paul Fleischman which was shortlisted for the 2010 Kate Greenaway Award.
David is also the creator of the ‘Dirty Bertie’ character about a little boy with bad habits such as picking his nose and trumping loudly!
Our little Bertie is at it again. He is experimenting with all the ways and places that he can pass gas. He manages to offend everyone around him and stinks up the atmosphere while he is at it. If you can tolerate potty humour and a child that likes to put a bit of spiciness into life, well this is the book for you. His big revelation is that he is not the only one who does a 'downward burp." His cat, his mom, his dad, his sister, even his dog lets them go and they too smell vile. Vocabulary building will abound with such words as: poot, ponged, parp, smelly, trump, rip, and boffs. The illustrations are cartoonish, expressive and really funny! The last page of the book (which I will not spoil for you) will put a smile on your child's face for sure. The reading of this book opens the perfect conversation about everyone on the planet passing gas and what to do about the event when it happens. It will truly provide a teachable moment in your child's life. Laugh along with Bertie as he discovers the wonderful world of "tooting."
Bertie can be a bit smelly. When he trumps it makes his mum cross, embarrasses his dad, upsets his gran and offends his sister. But they all have a secret - and Bertie knows it!For instance 'when Mum lets off a poot, she coughs'. Granny blames the cat, sister Suzy waits until she thinks no one is listening and then she sounds liker a brass band. So, he concludes, 'everybody does it'. Roberts' vigorous, sketchy artwork is light-hearted, cleverly catching the humour of the situations observed by Bertie in a useful and enjoyable take on a delicate topic.
I couldn't stop giggling at all the farting, pooting, trumping, boffing, and whiffing going on in Bertie's familyit is a great humorous book that allows to break the ice in class and especially allow children to be comfortable and talk about issues that might be embarrassing.
Bertie can be a bit smelly. When he trumps, it makes his mum cross, embarrasses his dad, upsets his gran and offends his sister. But they all have a secret - and Bertie knows what it is. Such as when mum “lets off a poot” she disguises this with a cough. Granny always blames the cat and his sister Suzy waits until she thinks no one is listening and then lets out a trump that sounds like a brass band!
We all know that children can find the topic of trumping to be a source of endless amusement and this book is no different. Having read this with a reception class during SBT1, they were greatly amused with Bertie and how he catches members of his family “secretly” trumping, pooting, boffing and whiffing! It’s an amusing story that takes a light hearted approach to a topic that can sometimes be embarrassing for children to discuss.
What's not to love, for young and old alike? ... It's a book about farts!! All kinds of farts and the people & pets that do them; Did you you know, for example, that they can go 'poot', 'parp', 'boff', 'trump', 'pip', 'frrp', 'prrrrp' and 'poooff'? That they range from a pongy little poot, or an eggy smelly boff, to a sneaky silent pip or a tremendous brass-band trump? They can be let rip, let off, covered up with a cough, blamed on the cat, or wafted about by the dog's tail? The moral of the story is that EVERYBODY does it - but Bertie does it the best - 'especially in the bath!'
I got a lot of raised up eyebrows and frowns, plus grimaces from this one. I gambled when I bought it, because you wouldn't want to buy books that encourage bad behavior. But to tell you the truth, it's hilarious. I couldn't stop laughing and giggling. It's a book that you would want to read after a tensed up round with your kids, and to break the ice, before a dentist or first day of school. It just causes your kids to fall on the ground with fits of laughing. You as well.
This book is all about farting and passing gas. I have never been a big fan of potty humor, but this is kinda funny. The back of the book promises : "This book is a gas!" I guess the book delivers on the promise.
Not a book for the prudish -- but my little one can't stop giggling at all the farting, pooting, trumping, boffing, and whiffing going on in Bertie's family!
